GENE BAUR - LIVING THE FARM SANCTUARY LIFE, May 13 2015 8:00 pm. FRANK MORA - NEIGHBORLY ADVERSARIES, May 13 2015 8:00 pm. The history of U.S.–Latin American relations has been characterized by a complex fusion of tensions, collaboration, misperceptions, and intervention. Offering a balanced and interdisciplinary interpretation, this comprehensive reader traces the often-troubled relationship from the beginnings of the nineteenth century to the presidency of Barack Obama. Completely revised and updated, this third edition includes original essays on critically important issues such as immigration, the environment, and the Obama administration’s policy toward the region. In addition to this added policy section, another new section explores cultural issues such as tourism, soccer, and the media. The readings are framed by the editors’ opening chapter on the history of the relationship, introductory essays for each of the seven parts, and abstracts for each selection. Students who use this book will learn that U.S.–Latin American relations have been deeply influenced by dynamic, continuously evolving scholarly interpretations in both hemispheres. Sixteen years after the first edition was published, the editors are more optimistic as the hemisphere unites around trade, culture, tourism and an evolving mutual appreciation. Methodologically interdisciplinary, yet comparative and historical in organization and structure, this text will benefit all readers interested in the rich historical, social, and political “American” relationship. About the Author: Frank Mora is director of the Latin American and Caribbean Center and professor of politics and international relations at Florida International University.

In the Community LISA LEONE IN CONVERSATION WITH ESTHER PARK - Here I Am, May 14 2015 6:30 pm. The Bronx-Paris-Los Angeles-early 1990s-Hip hop. This culture of music, dance, art and fashion is forever in its nascent and most authentic in Here I Am, the first monograph of Lisa Leone's photographs. From Nas in the first studio recordings for what would become Illmatic to Snoop on the set of his first video, from ingénue Debi Mazar hanging on the stoops of the West Village to Grandmaster Flash at a RockSteady reunion, Leone's photographs open portals to the sounds, places and, most important, the people who forged and continue to influence the energy that is hip hop. about the Photographer: Bronx born Lisa Leone began her career as a photographer shooting musicians Moby, Lauryn Hill and Maxwell, as well as personalities like Debi Mazar and Spike Lee. She worked for British Vogue and VIBE where she was a contributing photographer and columnist for two years. While shooting stills on a music video the director asked Lisa to shoot B roll. At that moment she traded in her stills camera for a film camera. So began her career as a cinematographer shooting music videos for artists TLC, Heavy D, D’Angelo and The Brand New Heavies. A few years later, Lisa began work on Stanley Kubrick’s last film "Eyes Wide Shut", starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Impressed with Leone’s talent and drive, Kubrick became her mentor. She started off doing research photos of New York during pre-production. Little did she know the project would consume the next four years of her life where she would do everything from set decorating, film & lighting tests, acting and directing second unit. Afterward, she continued her cinematography with work on independent films and shows for directors: Nancy Savoca’s "Dirt"; Showtime. Michael Kang’s "The Motel"; Sundance. Reno’s "Rebel Without a Pause". Havana Film Festival, Florence film festival, where it received the Peace Prize and “Citizen Reno” for Bravo. "Exactly" was Leone's debut film as writer, director and cinematographer. It stars Rosie Perez (Fearless) and Sarita Choudhury (Mississippi Masala). It premiered at Tribeca film festival, Sundance and the London film festival. “Good Morning Baby” was the second film Lisa directed starring Piper Perabo. Produced by Moxie Pictures it was a part of the Glamour REEL Moments shorts series. “Just For Kicks” is a full length documentary Lisa shot and co-directed. It premiered at Tribeca film festival, and was shown on SpikeTV, Canal+, among other stations around the world. It’s currently on DVD. She directed and shot a series of short films for Tommy Hilfiger and Glamour Magazine that premiered in NYC. One of her latest projects had her in Ethiopia where she shot and co-directed a short with Marisa Tomei. It was inspired by Nicholas Kristoff’s book “Half the Sky”. In 2010 she teamed up again with Nancy Savoca to shoot her feature film “Union Square” starring Mira Sorvino and Tammi Blanchard. Lisa has also shot and directed commercial and web campaigns for clients: Revlon, Kia and Cazadores Tequila. Currently her solo photography exhibit,

MERYL SHRIVER-RICE - INCLUSION IN NEW DANISH CINEMA, May 14 2015 8:00 pm. Often recognized as one of the happiest countries in the world, Denmark, like its Scandinavian neighbors, is known for its progressive culture, which is also reflected in its national cinema. It is not surprising, then, that Danish film boasts as many successful women film directors as men, uses scripts that are often co-written by the director and the screenwriter, and produces one of the largest numbers of queer films directed by and starring women. Despite all this, Danish film is not widely written about, especially in English. Inclusion in New Danish Cinema brings this vibrant culture to English-language audiences. Meryl Shriver-Rice argues that Denmark has demonstrated that film can reinforce cultural ethics and political values while also navigating the ongoing and mounting forces of digital communication and globalization. About the Author: Dr. Meryl Shriver-Rice is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Arts & Philosophy at Miami Dade College. As an interdisciplinary scholar she has taught film studies, ethics, philosophy, humanities, gender and pop culture studies, American studies, and psychology at the University of Miami, Barry University, and Metropolitan College of New York in New York City. She has published on Danish to Hollywood film adaptations, the transnational legacy of Scandinavian sex films, women directors, queer Scandinavian cinema, and war trauma in film. Her work has been featured in Film International, The Journal of Scandinavian Cinema, and in an edited interdisciplinary collection on war trauma entitled Speaking the Unspeakable (2013). Her research examines the shared ethical themes that place Denmark at the forefront of utilizing film as a medium to negotiate cultural ethics and political values. When not watching extraordinary Danish films, she is also an archaeologist and works on urban rescue sites in downtown Miami.

JO IVESTER - THE OUTSKIRTS OF HOPE, May 15 2015 8:00 pm. In 1967, when Jo Ivester was ten years old, her father transplanted his young family from a suburb of Boston to a small town in the heart of the Mississippi cotton fields, where he became the medical director of a clinic that served the poor population for miles around. But ultimately it was not Ivester’s father but her mother—a stay-at-home mother of four who became a high school English teacher when the family moved to the South—who made the most enduring mark on the town. In The Outskirts of Hope, Ivester uses journals left by her mother, as well as writings of her own, to paint a vivid, moving, and inspiring portrait of her family’s experiences living and working in an all-black town during the height of the civil rights movement. About the Author: Jo Ivester spent two years of her childhood living in a trailer in Mound Bayou, where she was the only white student at her junior high. She finished high school in Florida before attending Reed, MIT, and Stanford in preparation for a career in transportation and manufacturing. Following the birth of her fourth child, she became a teacher. She and her husband teach each January at MIT and travel extensively, splitting their time between Texas, Colorado, and Singapore.
