What do I do after the storm?

Take care of immediate safety concerns first.

Contact chain of command as soon as possible after storm passage. If unable to reach chain of command, call the SOUTHCOM JOC at 305.437.3600. Text messages often will be delivered when normal cell phone calls will not go through. If you have no communications, try your neighbors.

Therefore, it is very unlikely the commander will order a mass evacuation prior to a storm. Those who live in storm surge zones, mobile homes, or other nonresilient homes need to make personal plans for evacuation.

My home has no storm protection (shutters, storm windows) or I live in a mobile home. I intend to evacuate. What should I do?

Advance planning is essential. Plan to pack your family, pets and important documents quickly.

Make prior arrangements to stay with family or friends in a safe, storm-ready house. Another option is to go to a storm-ready hotel. Finally, county storm shelters are available; it is prudent to locate closest shelters early and know the route. Once you’ve decided on your destination, notify your chain of command of your location.

Will the government reimburse me if I evacuate my home?

Not normally. Only an ordered evacuation from the installation commander obligates reimbursement. Civil authorities may order an evacuation; however, they cannot obligate government funds.

May I bring my family and pets to HQ SOUTHCOM installation to ride out the storm?

No. The installation is not a Red Cross certified

Gold Star and Next of Kin Lapel Buttons These small lapel buttons, or pins, as they are commonly called, are normally presented to eligible Family members prior to the military funeral service. Although they are less than an inch in size, they are packed with great meaning and emotion.

They are not awards. They are symbols of honor. Here is how you can tell them apart.

Gold Star Lapel Button In 1947, Congress approved the use of the Gold Star Lapel Button as a way to recognize the Families of service members who lost their lives while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States.

This symbol consists of a gold star on a purple background, bordered in gold and surrounded by gold laurel leaves. It is designated for eligible survivors of service members who lose their lives during any armed hostilities in which the United States is engaged, dating back to World War I. This includes service members who lose their

In 1977, the Army approved issue of the Lapel Button for the Next of Kin of Deceased Personnel to honor those who lose their lives while serving on active duty or while assigned in a Reserve or National Guard unit in a drill status. Issue of the button is retroactive to 29 March 1973.”

If you have lost a loved one in the service of your country, here are some thoughts for you to consider. When you think about and remember your loved one who died while serving in the military, what comes to your mind? Do you find yourself wishing you could do more to honor the memory of your loved one? Do you wish sometimes you could share those favorite memories?

Who can wear the pin?

The Family members entitled to receive and wear these symbols are the widow or widower; each child, stepchild, and child through adoption; each brother, half brother, sister, and half-sister; and each of the parents (this includes mother, father, stepmother, stepfather, mother through adoption, father through adoption, and foster parents in loco parentis).

I did not receive a pin, where do I get one?

If you are an eligible Family member, but did not receive the lapel button to which you are entitled, you can request one through the National Archives. You can also apply for a replacement should yours ever be lost or damaged. If you would like help applying for a new or replacement Lapel Button, contact Survivor Outreach Services at 305.437.2178.

Benefits of Events for Survivors The Survivor Outreach Services programs and events are ways of sharing memories.

This sharing can be very painful and difficult, but doing so can lead to healing.

Sharing memories with other military survivors also provides you an audience that may be able to understand what you’re going through. Finding ways to bring you, the military survivor, together with others who have suffered the death of a Service Member can have great rewards.

MSEP is part of the Department of Defense’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities Program. MSEP consist of more than 270 MSEP partners. MSEP is celebrating having hired 75,000 spouses and continues to expand by developing new partnerships with many Fortune 500 plus companies.

Spouses have military preference in federal employment Spouses are challenged with having to move many times leading them to find employment at their new duty station. Under the Military Family Act established in 1985 the Military Spouse Preference program (MSP) was implemented by the Department of Defense. This program provides placement preference in DOD civilian personnel positions to military spouses who meet certain criteria. MSP applies to DOD vacancies only, and there are variations and exceptions that allow local hiring authorities to tailor their policies to meet their requirements.

Eligibility Requirements the MSP program: • Spouse of an active duty member of the U.S. Military Services to include Coast Guard or full-time National Guard • Must be relocating (not for separation or

MSP preference is given over other candidates except disabled veterans, employees registered in the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) program, and former employees returning from overseas. MSP applies to federal employment within the DOD civil service or Appropriated Fund (APF), and Non-Appropriated Funds (NAF.) They are considered separate hiring authorities and generally have separate hiring offices on military installations.

To Register for MSP: If you meet the requirement for eligibility, you must apply for Program “S,” the Priority Placement Program for military spouses. This is the only way you can exercise your military spouse preference for an APF position (within CONUS). You can apply for the program through your local Civilian Personnel Advisory Center (CPAC.) You will be asked to provide certain documentation, which includes: • A copy of your sponsor’s PCS orders • A copy of an SF-50 (if you have prior federal employment experience) or your DD214 (if

you are a former service member) • A copy of your most recent performance appraisal (if you are a current or former federal employee) • Other documentation, such as college transcripts or licenses, as required for the position.

Army 10 Miler Try Outs, Friday, June 24 at 0500. The top eight males and two females will be selected to represent the command at the upcoming Army Ten-Miler in Washington, D.C. on October 9, 2016.

The thirty participants included Active Duty and retired military, DoD civilians, reservists, members of other DoD agencies, Family members, and others. The event is a personal challenge.

The Maltz Challenge was won by Mr. John Garcia with a time of 15 minutes and 21 seconds.

This year’s Maltz Challenge honored PFC Rachel K. Bosvled and Chief Petty Officer Aaron C. Vaughn. PFC Bosveld, 19, of Waupun, Wisconsin was fatally injured during a mortar attack on the Abu Ghraib Police Station in Iraq. Bosveld was assigned to the 527th Military Police Company, V Corps, Giesen, Germany. She died on October 26, 2003. Elite Navy SEAL, Aaron Carson Vaughn, was born in Tennesee and was 30 years old. He was killed August 6, 2011 when a Chinook chopper carrying 30 American troops was shot down in Afghanistan.

Mr. John Shoupe has joined our team as the new Survivor Outreach Services Support Coordinator. John comes to us from Stuttgart, Germany where he was the Quality of Life Advisor for US Africa Command.

John has more than 40 years of experience in Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation which he brings to the Miami military community. He previously was both an Army Community Service Director and an MWR Director, and was the Director of Advanced Management Training for the MWR Academy. John is a welcome addition to our ACS, SOS and MWR team where his experience will make a difference in the delivery of programs and services to our Survivor population. Welcome John!
