BRIN-JONATHAN BUTLER - THE DOMINO DIARIES – Thursday, June 11, 2015 - 8:00pm, A powerful and lively work of immersive journalism, Brin-Jonathan Butler's story of his time chasing the American dream through Cuba. Whether he's hustling his way into Mike Tyson's mansion for an interview, betting his life savings on a boxing match, becoming romantically entangled with one of Fidel Castro's granddaughters, or simply manufacturing press credentials to go where he wants-Brin-Jonathan Butler has always been the "act first, ask permission later" kind of journalist. This book is the culmination of Butler's decade spent in the trenches of Havana, trying to understand a culture perplexing to Westerners: one whose elite athletes regularly forgo multimillion-dollar opportunities to stay in Cuba and box for their country, while living in penury. Butler's fascination with this distinctly Cuban idealism sets him off on a remarkable journey, training with, befriending, and interviewing the champion boxers that Cuba seems to produce more than any other country. In the process, though, Butler gets to know the landscape of the exhilaratingly warm Cuban culture-and starts to question where he feels most at home. In the tradition of Michael Lewis and John Jeremiah Sullivan, Butler is a keen and humane storyteller, and the perfect guide for this riotous tour through the streets of Havana. About the Author: BRIN-JONATHAN BUTLER is a writer and filmmaker. His work has appeared in ESPN Magazine, Vice, Deadspin, The Wall Street Journal, Salon, and The New York Times. Butler's documentary, Split Decision, is Butler's examination of Cuban-American relations and the economic and cultural paradoxes that have shaped them since Castro's revolution, through the lens of elite Cuban boxers forced to choose between remaining in Cuba or defecting to America.

BEN BATCHELDER - TO BELÉM & BACK: BACKROADS BRAZIL WITH MY BLACK LAB - Monday, June 15, 2015 - 6:30pm. About the Book: Budding author Ben Batchelder abandons his cozy corporate life and, instead of returning to the U.S., moves deep into the interior of Brazil. Here he drives his two-wheel drive station wagon into the Amazon, on the notoriously dangerous Belém-Brasília highway, and back along Brazil’s endless Atlantic Coast, on roads few if any Brazilians brave. Hence the need for such a ferocious breed as Labrador: for protection. Along the way, humorous encounters with countless locals help him to plumb Brazilian culture and history, in so many aspects the flip-side of the American experience, and reveal how he fell in love with Brazil’s beguiling warmth in the first place – along with black Labs. About the Author: Ben Batchelder has traveled extensively on American and Brazilian backroads. Nothing in his background, from a degree in Visual & Environmental Studies at Harvard to an MBA from Wharton, adequately prepared him for the experiences. Nevertheless he has published two books on his New World journeys, that map the inner and exterior geographies of meaningful travel, with plans for more. Having grown up in Cambridge, Mass., he currently leads a bi-hemispheric life, as a mountain man in the hills of Minas Gerais, Brazil who comes down to the sea at Miami Beach, Florida. For more, visit www.benbatchelder.com.
DR. ROBERT LUSTIG - PROCESSED FOOD: AN EXPERIMENT THAT FAILED - Monday, June 15, 2015 - 8:00pm. About Fat Chance the Book: Robert Lustig’s 90-minute YouTube video “Sugar: The Bitter Truth”, has been viewed more than three million times. Now, in this much anticipated book, he documents the science and the politics that has led to the pandemic of chronic disease over the last 30 years. In the late 1970s when the government mandated we get the fat out of our food, the food industry responded by pouring more sugar in. The result has been a perfect storm, disastrously altering our biochemistry and driving our eating habits out of our control. To help us lose weight and recover our health, Lustig presents personal strategies to readjust the key hormones that regulate hunger, reward, and stress; and societal strategies to improve the health of the next generation. Compelling, controversial, and completely based in science, Fat Chance debunks the widely held notion to prove “a calorie is NOT a calorie”, and takes that science to its logical conclusion to improve health worldwide. About Fat Chance the Cookbook: The long-awaited cookbook companion to the instant New York Times bestseller Fat Chance shows you how to beat the odds—deliciously. Dr. Robert Lustig’s message that a calorie is not a calorie revolutionized our understanding of weight loss and nutrition. But in order to avoid the hidden sugars that threaten our health and waistlines, Dr. Lustig warns that we must transform the way we shop, cook, and eat. Teaming up with Cindy Gershen—a chef who’s lost more than one-hundred pounds on his plan—Dr. Lustig shows readers how to: Stock a pantry, Prepare more than 100 fast and delicious recipes, Feed a family—kids included—healthy foods they’ll love, Make entertaining easy and nutritious. The Fat Chance Cookbook shows you how to lose weight, find your way back to health, and still enjoy delectable, memorable meals.
