DIMITRY ELIAS LEGER (IN CONVERSATION WITH EDWIDGE DANTICAT) - GOD LOVES HAITI - Jan 14 2015 8:00 pm. A native of Haiti, Dimitry Elias Léger makes his remarkable debut with this story of romance, politics, and religion that traces the fates of three lovers in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and the challenges they face readjusting to life after an earthquake devastates their city. Reflecting the chaos of disaster and its aftermath, God Loves Haiti switches between time periods and locations, yet always moves closer to solving the driving mystery at its center: Will the artist Natasha Robert reunite with her one true love, the injured Alain Destiné, and live happily ever after? Warm and constantly surprising, told in the incandescent style of José Saramago and Roberto Bolaño, and reminiscent of Gabriel García Márquez’s hauntingly beautiful Love in The Time of Cholera, God Loves Haitiis an homage to a lost time and city, and the people who embody it. About the Author: Dimitry Elias Léger was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Educated at St. John's University and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, he is a former staff writer at the Miami Herald, Fortune magazine, and the Source magazine, and also a contributor to the New York Times, Newsweek, and The Face magazine in the UK. In 2010 he worked as an adviser to the United Nations' disaster recovery operations in Haiti after the earthquake. This is his first novel. He lives with his family in France and the United States. Edwidge Danticat was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1969. Her parents separately moved to the United States in the next several years, and then Danticat followed them there at the age of 12. Danticat grew up speaking French and Creole and she spoke no English upon moving to the United States. However, after only two years, she began writing in English and now is an accomplished writer of English short stories and novels. Her work has been translated into several languages including Korean, Italian, German, Spanish and Swedish. Her first published writing in English became the inspiration for her first novel, Breath, Eyes, Memory. She has also published a collection of short stories, Krik? Krak! , and an additional novel The Farming of the Bones. Her own life experiences have provided background and inspiration for her writing. Danticat's short stories and novels focus on recurring themes such as migration, sexuality, gender and history. Danticat's recent first person fiction novel is Behind the Mountains. The subject matter of this book also stems from Danticat's own childhood and adaptation to a new life in Brooklyn, New York. The protagonist, Celiane Esperance and her family escape a politically unstable and impoverished Haiti. After years of separation, Celiane reunites with her family in Brooklyn, where she is shocked by life in the new city. Danticat currently lives in New York and teaches Creative Writing at New York University.

JULIAN ZELIZER - THE URGENCY OF NOW - Jan 15 2015 8:00 pm. Between November 1963, when he became president, and November 1966, when his party was routed in the midterm elections, Lyndon Johnson spearheaded the most transformative agenda in American political history since the New Deal, one whose ambition and achievement have had no parallel since. In just three years, Johnson drove the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts; the War on Poverty program; Medicare and Medicaid; the National Endowments for the Arts and the Humanities; Public Broadcasting; immigration liberalization; a raft of consumer and environmental protection acts; and major federal investments in public transportation. Collectively, this group of achievements was labeled by Johnson and his team the “Great Society.” In The Fierce Urgency of Now, Julian E. Zelizer takes the full measure of the entire story in all its epic sweep. Before Johnson, Kennedy tried and failed to achieve many of these advances. Our practiced understanding is that this was an unprecedented “liberal hour” in America, a moment, after Kennedy’s death, when the seas parted and Johnson could simply stroll through to victory. As Zelizer shows, this view is off-base: In many respects America was even more conservative than it seems now, and Johnson’s legislative program faced bitter resistance. The Fierce Urgency of Now animates the full spectrum of forces at play during these turbulent years, including religious groups, the media, conservative and liberal political action groups, unions, and civil rights activists. Above all, the great character in the book whose role rivals Johnson’s is Congress—indeed, Zelizer argues that our understanding of the Great Society program is too Johnson-centric. He discusses why Congress was so receptive to passing these ideas in a remarkably short span of time and how the election of 1964 and burgeoning civil rights movement transformed conditions on Capitol Hill. Zelizer brings a deep, intimate knowledge of the institution to bear on his story: The book is a master class in American political grand strategy. Finally, Zelizer reckons with the legacy of the Great Society. Though our politics have changed, the heart of the Great Society legislation remains intact fifty years later. In fact, he argues, the Great Society shifted the American political center of gravity—and our social landscape—decisively to the left in many crucial respects. In a very real sense, we are living today in the country that Johnson and his Congress made. About the Author: Julian E. Zelizer is the Malcolm Stevenson Forbes, Class of 1941 Professor of History and Public Affairs at Princeton University and a fellow at New America. He is the author and editor of numerous books that examine U.S. political leaders, policies, and institutions since the New Deal. His most recent books are Jimmy Carter, Arsenal of Democracy, and Governing America: The Revival of Political History. He is also a weekly columnist for CNN.com.

SAM DALEY- HARRIS - RECLAIMING OUR DEMOCRACY - Jan 16 2015 6:30 pm. Author and activist Sam Daley-Harris understands why reading news headlines are enough to persuade anyone throw up their hands in despair. But as he will tell you hopelessness is not a strategy for making a difference on peace or social and environmental justice issues. Daley-Harris, a Miami native who is also in town to deliver the Distinguished Alumni Lecture at the University of Miami, will share insights and strategies from the 20th anniversary edition of Reclaiming Our Democracy: Healing the Break between People and Government on ways to make a profound difference in the public sphere. His work, described in the NY Times article “Lobbying for the Greater Good,” centers around people's hopelessness about making a difference with government and what can be done to turn that around. President Jimmy Carter has said Daley-Harris, “….provides a road map for global involvement in planning a better future.” Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus concludes his foreword to the 20th anniversary edition by saying, “The courage this book shows us how to unleash is our only hope to save creation for our grandchildren and for theirs.” About the Author: Sam Daley-Harris has been called “…one of the certified great social entrepreneurs of the last decades” by Ashoka founder Bill Drayton. Daley-Harris founded the anti-poverty lobby RESULTS in 1980, founded the Microcredit Summit Campaign in 1995 and founded the Center for Citizen Empowerment and Transformation (CCET) in 2012. CCET helps organizations train their members to create champions in Congress and the media for their cause.
