DR. STEVEN HEINE - ZEN KOANS - Jan 21 2015 6:30 pm. "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" "Does a dog have Buddha-nature?" These cryptic expressions are among the best-known examples of koans, the confusing, often contradictory sayings that form the centrepiece of Zen Buddhist learning and training. Viewed as an ideal method for attaining and transmitting an unimpeded experience of enlightenment, they became the main object of study in Zen meditation, where their contemplation was meant to exhaust the capacity of the rational mind and the expressiveness of speech. Koan compilations, which include elegant poetic and eloquent prose commentaries on cryptic dialogues, are part of a great literary tradition in China, Japan, and Korea that appealed to intellectuals who sought spiritual fulfilment through interpreting elaborate rhetoric related to mysterious metaphysical exchanges. In this compact volume, Steven Heine, who has written extensively on Zen Buddhism and koans, introduces and analyses the classic background of texts and rites and explores the contemporary significance of koans to illuminate the full implications of this ongoing tradition. He delves deeply into the inner structure of koan literature to uncover and interpret profound levels of metaphorical significance. At the same time, he takes the reader beyond the veil of vagueness and inscrutability to an understanding of how koan writings have been used in pre-modern East Asia and are coming to be evoked and implemented in modern American practice of Zen. By focusing on two main facets of the religious themes expressed in koan records--individual religious attainment and the role dialogues play in maintaining order in the monastic system--Zen Koans reveals the distinct yet interlocking levels of meaning reflected in different koan case records and helps make sense of the seemingly nonsensical. It is a book for anyone interested in untangling the web of words used in Zen exchanges and exploring their important place in the vast creative wellspring of East Asian religion and culture. About the Author: Steven Heine is professor of religious studies and history and director of Asian studies at Florida International University, USA.

In the Community GUIDO RUGGIERO - THE RENAISSANCE IN ITALY - Jan 21 2015 8:00 pm. This book offers a rich and exciting new way of thinking about the Italian Renaissance as both a historical period and a historical movement. Guido Ruggiero's work is based on archival research and new insights of social and cultural history and literary criticism, with a special emphasis on everyday culture, gender, violence, and sexuality. The book offers a vibrant and relevant critical study of a period too long burdened by anachronistic and outdated ways of thinking about the past. Familiar, yet alien; pre-modern, but suggestively post-modern; attractive and troubling, this book returns the Italian Renaissance to center stage in our past and in our historical analysis. About the Author: Guido Ruggiero, Professor and Cooper Fellow of History at the College of Arts and Sciences, was born in Danbury, Connecticut and grew up in Webster, New York, a small rural town along the old shore line of Lake Ontario. After earning a B.A. with a heavy focus on ancient history and philosophy at the University of Colorado, he went on to UCLA where as a University of California Regent's Intern Fellow he earned an M.A. (1967) and a Ph.D. (1972). As a Regent's Fellow he began his long love affair with Venice and the Venetian Archives in 1970 and has been returning there for his research ever since. Professor Ruggiero has published on the history of gender, sex, crime, magic, science and everyday culture, primarily in renaissance and early modern Italy. Early in his career he focused on social science history, but his interests have expanded toward yet more interdisciplinary approaches, including microhistory, narrative history, and the melding of literature, literary criticism, and archival history. Among other volumes he has published Violence in Early Renaissance Venice (1980),The Boundaries of Eros: Sex Crime and Sexuality in Renaissance Venice (1985), Binding Passions: Tales of Magic, Marriage and Power from the End of the Renaissance(1993), Machiavelli in Love: Sex, Self and Society in Renaissance Italy (2007); as well as Sex and Gender in Historical Perspectives (1990), Microhistory and the Lost Peoples of Europe (1991), and History from Crime (1993), edited with Edward Muir. In addition he has edited The Blackwell Companion to the Renaissance (2002) and Five Comedies from the Italian Renaissance (2003) edited and translated with Laura Giannetti. He also edited the series Studies in the History of Sexuality (1985-2002) for Oxford University Press and was a co-editor of the six volume Encyclopedia of European Social History for Scribner's (2002). His major rethinking of the Italian Renaissance, The Renaissance in Italy: A Social and Cultural History of the Rinascimento is due out in 2014 with Cambridge University Press. In addition to being a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton (1981-82; 1991), a Fellow at Harvard's Villa I Tatti in Florence, Italy (1990-1991) and a Visiting Professor at the American Academy in Rome (Fall, 2011) he has won a number of grants and fellowships including a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (1990). Ruggiero regularly teaches classes on the Italian Renaissance, the new social and cultural history, and the uses of literature for history.

In the Community ANTONIO SIMON JR. - THE GULLWING ODYSSEY - Jan 24 2015 7:00 pm. Marco's life as a messenger isn't great, but the work is easy and he gets retirement pay in thirty years. Little does he know his life teeters on the cusp of change. When an unusual assignment sends him overseas, he finds himself stranded in foreign lands. With no way home and no hope of making his delivery, he sees sour prospects for attaining his modest retirement dreams, much less getting out of the whole mess alive. Even that wouldn't be so bad if he weren't constantly outrunning pirates, embroiled in international intrigue, and attacked by a hummingbird with an appetite for human brains - that's just the start of his misadventures. But lurking in the wings is a much greater threat than getting sacked from his job. The fate of an entire civilization may well rest upon his scrawny shoulders. In spite of himself and quite by accident, Marco may yet become the hero he strives not to be. About the Author: Antonio Simon, Jr. is a lawyer and author of several books. He holds Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Miami (Florida) in the subjects of political science and history, as well as a Juris Doctorate from Saint Thomas University's School of Law. As you read this, he's probably in court, or working on his next project, or driving really fast in moments in between. He lives in Miami, Florida.

JAMES GRIPPANDO - CANE AND ABE - Jan 28 2015 8:00 pm. A spellbinding novel of suspense from New York Times bestselling author James Grippando, in which Miami’s top prosecutor becomes a prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance, which may have a chilling connection to the woman he can’t forget. Unbelievable was the word for her. Samantha Vine was unbelievably beautiful. It was unbelievable that she’d married me. Even more unbelievable that she was gone . . .Samantha died too soon. Abe Beckham’s new wife has helped him through the loss, but some say it was a step back to marry Angelina, a love from Abe’s past. Abe doesn’t want to hear it, and through the ups and downs, he’s even managed to remain a star prosecutor at the Miami State Attorney’s Office. Then everything goes wrong. A woman’s body is discovered dumped in the Everglades, and Abe is called upon to monitor the investigation. The FBI is tracking a killer in South Florida they call “Cutter” because his brutal methods harken back to Florida’s dark past, when machete-wielding men cut sugarcane by hand in the blazing sun. But when the feds discover that Abe had a brief encounter with the victim after Samantha’s death, and when Angelina goes missing, the respected attorney finds himself under fire. Suspicion surrounds him. His closest friends, family, professional colleagues, and the media no longer trust his motives. Was Angelina right? Was their marriage not what they’d hoped for because he loved Samantha too much? Or was there another woman . . . and a husband with a dark side who simply wanted his new wife gone? OPERATION SHOWER is coming to Miami! Operation Shower is a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating and honoring military families by hosting joyful baby showers. The event will be held in Doral, FL on March 1st, 2015. Prospective moms that meet the criteria outlined in the flyer should inquire with the POC, Rachel Homniok. Please apply early due to limited space. Rachel.r.homniok.mil@mail.mil, 305-437-0846.
