RAISING KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: AN EVENING WITH ANNE FORD - Apr 29 2015 6:30 pm. LAUGHING ALLEGRA: The Inspiring Story of a Mother's Struggle and Triumph Raising a Daughter with Learning Disabilities. Blending memoir with self-help, this is the remarkably honest and inspiring story about raising a child with learning disabilities. When Anne Ford learned that her daughter Allegra's “differences” were the result of severe learning disabilities, she faced a challenge that neither money nor position could ease. Desperate for answers, she sought out doctors, schools, and tutors for help. As she journeyed from denial to acceptance, Anne faced rejection, intolerance, disinterest, and puzzlement from friends, family, and professionals, eventually finding her way to the schools, people, and situations that enabled her to raise her family with hope and promise. Anne became an activist on behalf of children and families faced with LD, and in time, she saw her child grow into a vibrant, loving, independent adult with a passion for ice skating and a commitment to help other children with disabilities. OFFSITE: DAVID BROOKS - THE ROAD TO CHARACTER - MDC Chapman Conference Center, 300 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, Florida Apr 30 2015 6:30 pm. Please RSVP HERE. In today’s culture of achievement, the drive for external success and attention is so fierce there's little time to cultivate inner depth. We're taught to be assertive, to master skills, to broadcast our brand, to get likes, to get followers. We’ve become a self-preoccupied society; and the noise, the fast and shallow communications, makes it hard to hear the quiet voices that steer us beyond our immediate needs. In this elegant interweaving of politics, spirituality, psychology, and confessional, New York Times bestselling author David Brooks’ The Road to Character urges us to confront the meaning of true fulfillment. Brooks separates two sorts of virtues, resume virtues and eulogy virtues. Resume virtues are the skills you bring to the marketplace--wealth, fame, status and a great career. Eulogy virtues are the things people will say about you at your funeral-- these virtues are driven by a spiritual urge not only to do good but to be good--to be honest, loving, steadfast, and integrated at the core. Most of us would say that eulogy virtues are more important than the resume ones, but not the ones we think about the most. How did we become a culture of the Big Me? Brooks looks to the post-WWII years when people wanted to escape from the shackles of self-restraint and subjects like sin and depravity. They were ready to put scarcity and thrift behind them. Positive Psychology and other movements came to the fore, and, while these movements weren’t illegitimate, Brooks believes they went too far and have put us out of balance. He argues that the central fallacy of modern life is that The Big Me –the Culture of Achievement, our total focus on resume virtues as opposed to eulogy virtues – can lead to true fulfillment. But it’s only by cultivating eulogy virtues that we can get there and, unfortunately, we’ve lost the vocabulary and means to do this. Brooks does not offer a seven-point program on finding inner worth, instead, he makes the point that we do not learn through moral lecture but through emulation and inspiration. Citing an array of history’s greatest thinkers and leaders—from St. Augustine and Dorothy Day to Dwight Eisenhower and Samuel Johnson—Brooks traces how these men and women were able to face their weaknesses and transcend their flaws. Each choosing to embrace one simple but counterintuitive truth: in order to fulfill yourself, you must learn how to forget yourself. The good news of this book is that it is okay to be flawed, since everyone is. Sin and limitation are woven through our lives. Brooks writes, “we are all stumblers, and the beauty and meaning of life are in the stumbling… Joy comes as a gift when you least expect it. At those fleeting moments you know why you were put here and what truth you serve. You may not hear the orchestra’s delirious swell or see flashes of crimson and gold, but you will feel a satisfaction, a silence, a peace—a hush. Those moments are the signs and the blessings of a well-lived life.” Eye-opening and deeply personal, The Road to Character proves that it is how we want to be remembered – and not what we put on our resumes – that truly matters. This is David Brooks’ most powerful and revolutionary book yet. About the Author: David Brooks writes an op-ed column for The New York Times, teaches at Yale University, and appears regularly on PBS NewsHour, NPR’s All Things Considered, and NBC’s Meet the Press. He is the author of Bobos in Paradise: The New Upper Class and How They Got There; On Paradise Drive: How We Live Now (And Always Have) in the Future Tense; and The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement.
