JASON WACHOB – WELLTH. Thursday, March 31, 8pm. “Many of us aren’t satisfied with just trying to accumulate the most money and toys. The good life is no longer just about the material—instead, it can be found in a lifestyle that is devoted to mental, physical, and emotional health. A wellthy existence is one in which happiness is attainable, health is paramount, and daily living is about abundance. It’s a life in which work is purposeful; friendships are deep and plentiful; and there’s a daily sense of richness or overflowing joy. But since there’s no one-size-fits all definition for a wellthy existence, I hope this book will serve as a guide to help you embark on your own personal journey that is both unique and meaningful.” Eat. Move. Work. Believe. Explore. Breathe. Connect. Love. Heal. Thank. Ground. Live. Laugh. These are the building blocks of Wellth…and in this blend of memoir and prescriptive advice Jason Wachob shows us all how to enjoy truly ‘wellthy’ lives—lives that are deeply rich in every conceivable way. Through his experience and personal story, as well as in exclusive material from popular expert contributors (including Dr. Frank Lipman, Dr. Lissa Rankin, Joe Cross, Charlie Knoles, Kathryn Budig, Dr. Aviva Romm, and Dr. Sue Johnson), we learn how we too can embrace this new movement and develop richer, fuller, happier, healthier, and more meaningful lives. What will make your life more wellthy? Come and explore it. About the Author: JASON WACHOB is the Founder and CEO of mindbodygreen, the leading independent media company dedicated to health and happiness with 15 million monthly unique visitors. He has been featured in The New York Times, Entrepreneur, Fast Company, and Vogue. Jason has a BA in history from Columbia University, where he played varsity basketball for four years. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, and loves German Shepherds, Chuck Taylors, and guacamole.

WEEDS AND OTHER WONDERS PLANT PORTRAITS BY SUSAN CUMINS Friday, April 1, 7pm. South Florida is home to an astounding variety of plants--from flamboyant to miniscule, from common to rare and endangered. Scrutinized under the meticulous gaze of botanical artists, even the humblest plants yield details that inspire us with their beauty and complexity. By making us see the world in a new way, art has the power to create personal connections with nature around us. In that way art may be more effective than science in helping us to think about the future we want for the earth and plan ways to achieve it. “A weed is just a plant in a place where it’s not wanted. Some of my favorite plants are weeds.” -Susan Cumins. Freelance writer and communications strategist Susan Cumins grew up in Southern California where she developed a lifelong interest in plants. With a BA and MFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and studies at the University of Padua and the Accademia di Belle Arti, Venice, she was an exhibits coordinator at the Smithsonian’s Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), then assistant curator of painting and sculpture at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Susan has lived in South Florida since 1981. Through classes at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden she discovered the discipline of botanical illustration. A member of Miami-based Tropical Botanic Artists (tropicalbotanicartists.com) and the American Society of Botanical Artists (asba-art.org), Susan has exhibited at the Coral Gables Museum, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, The Kampong, and Chicago Botanic Garden. Her work has also been shown at visitor centers in Biscayne National Park, at Florida International University’s Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum and Glenn Colbert Library, Anne Kolb Nature Center, Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club, and at Miami-Dade County libraries.

BRAD AIKEN - SMALL DOSES OF THE FUTURE - Saturday, April 2, 6pm. One of the great debates in science fiction these days is whether it is losing its relevance as the rate of technological advancement increases. The reality of new technologies often outpaces that which has been predicted in literature, and nowhere is this more apparent than in Medicine. Forty years ago CAT (Computerized Axial Tomography) scanners revolutionized the way we image the body, and in the decades since there has been a rapid-fire release of one technology after the next – MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), CTA (Computerized Tomography Angiography), MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography), PET-CT (Positron Emission Tomography – Computerized Tomography), etc. – that allows us to see inside the body at a level of detail that was considered impossible only a few short decades ago. In fact, today’s imaging rivals that depicted in early Star Trek episodes that were trying to predict the technology of the twenty-third century. Advances in robotic surgery have improved the accuracy of skilled surgeons; new medications utilizing nanotechnology are improving efficacy while diminishing side-effects; electronic health records are rapidly disseminating information to all involved providers; and an ever-increasing array of new technologies have contributed to the evolution of modern Medicine. In my field, Rehabilitation Medicine, technologies such as braincomputer interfacing (allowing someone to directly control a computer with only their thoughts), bionic prosthetic limbs, robotic therapy devices (robots that aide in physical therapy), and robotic exoskeletal braces that allow paraplegics to walk again have already crept out of the pages of science fiction and into the real world. Although most of these are not yet advanced enough for widespread clinical use, there is no doubt that they will dramatically improve the way we help people with disabilities regain their independence. The stories in this collection look at where we might be going in the near and distant future with regards, not only to the continued application of these remarkable technologies, but also to the political and ethical implications of how all this technology is going to affect us as individuals and as a society. And while it is fun to look at how the technological advances in medical care may enhance our lives, the ethical dilemmas posed by these changes are perhaps even more intriguing. I hope you’ll find these stories not only entertaining, but also thought-provoking. After all, the future is not set in stone, and it is our job, all of us, to try and nurture it to grow in the right direction. About the Author: Dr. Brad Aiken is the medical director for Rehabilitation Medicine at Baptist Hospital in Miami. After graduating from medical school, he became interested in how medicine and science fiction influence each other, and has presented at numerous medical conferences, science fiction conventions, and at the 2014 meeting of the World Future society on this topic. He began writing science fiction during his undergraduate days at Boston University, eventually becoming a member of the Science Fiction Writers of America. Several of his short stories have appeared in Analog Science Fiction and Fact, and his novels include the medical techno-thriller Mind Fields as well as the futuristic adventure series Starscape.

In the Community Aiken’s most recent publication is Small Doses of the Future: Robots, Brain-Machine Interfaces, Nanites... They're coming sooner than you think. Dr. Aiken’s stories, previously published in Analog Science Fiction and Fact over the past few years, have recently been compiled in this short story collection as part of Springer’s Science and Fiction series. This new book also features previously unpublished stories as well as The Invasion of Modern Medicine by Science Fiction – an essay on the science behind the stories. Join us as Dr. Aiken discusses his latest book and shares his ideas about how the future of medicine will affect us all. Further information and reviews can be found at bradaiken.com.

DAVID CALDERIN, CHARLIE CALDERIN & JOSE PILARTE - POETRY FOR THE MIND - Sunday, April 3, 2016 - 6:30pm. Join us for the official launch of Poetry For the Mind: Volume I. Party starts at 6:30pm with music from DJ Heavy Chuck in the courtyard and continues for the launch of Surprise Sunday Funday's at Books & Books at 8:30pm with a FREE open mic night event. Enjoy original poetry from brothers Charlie and David "Drago" Calderin as well as original artwork inspired from the book by Jose Pilarte. ABOUT: Charlie Calderin "EPOK84" - Born in The Bronx, NYC 1984 .Epok84 was exposed from an early age to a variety of music, due to his father DJing Vinyl Records in the late 80's. Growing up in the gritty City at the time and visiting his Grandmother in The Bronx, he would fall in love with the Graffiti , not looking at it as vandalism, but as a unique form of Art that would spark his imagination to begin drawing. Moving to New Jersey where he started grammar school and a few years later moving to Miami, FL where he would finish his Schooling, During this time he developed an interest in drawing, sketching, soon followed by writing short poems in composition books. The influence from Hip Hop, R&B, and House Music in part of his father's vast collection of music would inspire him to write Poetry and express himself freely as he desired. Never pursuing a career in the arts , he began to work 9-5 jobs after graduating High School until he began a career in the medical field as an X-ray Tech. Through his journey, no matter where he was, he would always find time to sketch or write. In his early 20's he would tag his notebook with the word "EPOK", which is an acronym for Eclectic Prisoner Of Knowledge, later adding 84 for his birth year. In 2011, EPOK84 decided to get together with his younger brother David "Drago" and childhood friend Jose "Sarkas", put together a book titled "Poetry for the Mind Volume 1" with their collection of poetry with some artwork, self-publish, take a chance, and release it into the universe! David Calderin " Drago " - Co-Author / Younger brother of Charlie "Epok84" , Born in The Bronx, NY 1986. Growing up in the late 80's / early 90's , Drago's influence in drawing was sparked by the imagination from cartoons ranging from The Ninja Turtles to Dragon Ball. Playing video games starting with Nintendo also played an important role in his artwork, in which he would soon create characters and eventually create his own mini- adventure comics based heavily on the dynamics of " Good VS Evil". The Dragon was a mythical creature he became infatuated with, thus generating his own nickname as "Drago", in which he created his own super hero character with that name. Later on with his personal life experiences, poetry became a big part of his teenage life into adulthood. Recognizing that very concept of "Good VS Evil" , he based many of his poetry after " The Light VS Darkness" as he went through good and bad times in his life. The love for Mythical characters, Gods from Greco-Roman culture, and science fiction also played a major part in his poetry, which can viewed in "Poetry for the Mind Volume 1". Jose J. Pilarte " Sarkas"- Co-Author/ Childhood friend of Epok84 & Drago, Born in Miami, FL 1984. Youngest out of 3, with an older brother and sister, Sarkas grew up and developed a passion for music and movies. Highly in tuned with his environment in and out of school, he learned to transform his imagination into sketches and art work.
