If you are not already registered on this site, click on Register at the top right. Click on the Join Now button in the middle of that page on the right. Complete the registration form and select USAG-Miami in the Military Community Affiliation drop-box under HQ IMCOM. 2. Once registered, you can log in. Click on the Volunteer Tools tab located in the upper right hand corner of the webpage. 3. Click on Volunteer Profile. Complete all requested information in the volunteer profile. Be sure to enter the last four digits only of your social security number and save the page. This will ensure you are a registered volunteer. 4. You can use the Volunteer Opportunities tab to locate volunteer opportunities on the installation. Each drill meet requires 20 to 30 volunteer judges (normally 10 competition boxes with one head judge and three field judges per box.) More than 500 cadets from around 20 Miami-Dade and Broward Counties' JROTC schools compete in these drill meets. Uniform is the ACU/BDU equivalent IAW each service regulation. CORAL GABLES GALLERY NIGHT OPENING: EDUARDO DEL VALLE "CHILDHOOD MEMORIES FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WATER“ Friday, February 5, 2016 7:00pm. These beautiful, evocative and sometimes painful photographs lead us through a different land in a different time. Or do they? Our first impression is that they take us through Eduardo del Valle’s childhood in Cuba where we know he suffered horrific trauma and betrayal. But we also see great beauty in these photographs. How can that be? You see Eduardo’s story is a very human one. All humans suffer, most have felt shame and alone, and we long for well-being, love and happiness. But for most of us who have experienced sexual abuse as children, we don’t have words to express our feelings. That’s because there are no words adequate to express the feelings a young person might have when they are being abused and humiliated. There are just unfelt emotions shrouded in shame. Most children who experience trauma remember the event, but bury the emotions. Eduardo has carried this history for fifty years. For him, these emotions are very much alive. That’s because all buried emotions are buried alive, aching to have a voice. Over time, this shame and secrecy add more suffering to the original abuse. And shame is like mold, it grows in darkness. Sunlight kills mold. And when we expose our history to sunlight, as Eduardo has done for us, this shame dissipates. Eduardo has the courage to share his tender heart with the world. I’ve no doubt that his shame has dissipated in the process. And what happens in the wake of that? We can begin to experience love for others and from others. And as Eduardo del Valle knows, sometimes that love pours forth from the scar tissue in our hearts.

ROBIN LIPPINCOTT - BLUE TERRITORY - A MEDITATION ON THE LIFE AND ART OF JOAN MITCHELL , Sunday, February 7, 2016 - 4:00pm. Blue Territory is a poetic immersion into the life and art of Joan Mitchell, the great American abstract expressionist painter. A contemporary of Jackson Pollock and Willem De Kooning, she is not as well known as her male counterparts because she was a woman and also because she spent most of her working life in France. Still, in 2013, Bloomsburg Business listed Mitchell as the bestselling female artist of all time. When asked to talk about her paintings, Joan Mitchell often responded, “If I could say it in words, I’d write a book.” Here is her book. At once unique and universal, Blue Territory is at its core an exploration of love and life, and what it means to love - and live - what you do. Meticulously researched and lyrically written, it will appeal to anyone interested in passionate engagement with the world. The book eschews images so as to allow the words to form them, thereby freeing the reader to imagine the paintings, much as Mitchell would have to do before picking up her brush. About the Author: Born and raised in the South, Robin is also the author of the novels IN THE MEANTIME, OUR ARCADIA, and MR. DALLOWAY, as well as the short story collection, THE 'I' REJECTED, now available on Kindle. IN THE MEANTIME and MR. DALLOWAY are also available as e-books. In the Community GAIL POOL - LOST ALONG THE BAINING - Monday, February 8, 2016 - 8:00pm. In the late sixties, Gail Pool and her husband set off for an adventure in New Guinea. He was a graduate student in anthropology; she was an aspiring writer. They prepared, as academics do, by reading, practicing with language tapes, consulting with the nearest thing to experts, and then, excited and optimistic, off they went. But all their research could not prepare them for the reality of life in the jungle. As they warded off gargantuan insects, slogged through seemingly endless mud, and turned on each other in fatigue and frustration, they struggled to somehow connect with their enigmatic hosts, the Baining—a people who showed no desire to be studied. Sixteen months later they returned home. Despite months of trying, they had not been able to make sense of the Baining’s culture. Worse yet, their lives no longer seemed to make sense. Pool put her journals away. Her husband abandoned the study of anthropology. Decades later, Pool returned to her journals and found in her jumbled notes the understanding that had eluded her twenty-three–year-old self. Finally, she and her husband returned to New Guinea for a shorter visit and a warm reunion with the tribe that challenged them on so many levels and, Pool now realized, made their journey and lives deeper and richer. About the Author: I was born in New York City, attended Little Red School House and Hunter College High School, and concentrated in Classics at Harvard. After marrying in college, my husband and I lived in London, New Guinea, and San Francisco before settling in the Boston area with our son. These days we live in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Sanibel, Florida. For more than thirty years, I've been involved primarily in literary journalism, with a focus on criticism, the culture of magazines, and travel. I was editor of Boston Review, books editor of the Radcliffe Quarterly, a book columnist/reviewer for many publications, and a writing instructor at the Radcliffe Seminars. My three books are: Lost Among the Baining: Adventure, Marriage, and Other Fieldwork, Faint Praise: The Plight of Book Reviewing in America, and Other People's Mail: An Anthology of Letter Stories, all published by the University of Missouri Press. In writing Lost Among the Baining, I've returned to the world of travel I wrote about in reviews for the Christian Science Monitor and in travel essays for the New York Times. In fact, the book was inspired partly by a Times essay that I wrote about a fiasco of a field trip I took to New Guinea with my husband. My memoir looks back with wry humor on our sixteen months living in the bush with a people whose very different culture seemed to undermine our own, and our redemptive return to the village nearly forty years later. For those who share my love of travel literature, I've started a blog called TraveLit, which reviews travel classics. These books--mostly little-known, and all worth knowing--cover travel is all its forms, from exploration to tourism. Along with reviews, TraveLit brings together provocative or entertaining quotations and reader recommendations.

Where’s Jack Nicholson when you need him? About the Author: Tim Dorsey was born in Indiana, moved to Florida at the age of 1, and grew up in Riviera Beach in Palm Beach County. He graduated from Auburn University in 1983 with a B.S. in Transportation. While at Auburn, he was editor of the student newspaper, The Plainsman. From 1983 to 1987, he was a police and courts reporter for The Alabama Journal, the now-defunct evening newspaper in Montgomery. He joined The Tampa Tribune in 1987 as a general assignment reporter. He also worked as a political reporter in the Tribune's Tallahassee bureau and a copy desk editor. From 1994 to 1999, he was the Tribune's night metro editor and night news coordinator. But it is Raymond's brother, Nicolas, a wealthy professor at the local university, who is stirring up trouble. A secret manifesto penned by Nicolas is rallying opposition to Papa Doc. After a tip-off from a disgruntled student, Nicolas' home is raided and the manifesto discovered, landing him in Fort Dimanche, a notorious, disease-ridden prison many enter but few ever leave. Meanwhile, Raymond's wife leaves him, taking their children and escaping the island. With his family gone, Raymond gets himself arrested as part of a death-defying plan to break his brother out of jail. Fabienne Josaphat's electric prose brings to life a horrifying and not so distant time in Haiti's past while exploring the best and worst of humanity. The novel examines power's tendency to corrupt, the impulse of nationalistic pride, and, above all, the human desire to survive, while describing in rigorous detail the shocking realities of life in the Baron's shadow. In the Community BENJAMIN BECK - THIRTEEN GOLD MONKEYS - Monday, February 15, 2016 - 6:30pm, A story of hope, love, and unspeakable death in a disappearing Brazilian rainforest. A team of dogged conservationists tries to save a beautiful monkey species, the golden lion tamarin, from certain extinction by reinforcing their numbers with tamarins born in zoos. Will these immigrants learn to find enough to eat, find secure places to sleep, avoid predators, and survive attacks by wild tamarins? Will they find mates and make babies? The technique, known as reintroduction, is new, and the conservationists struggle to find the best method. Can they train the tamarins in zoos to meet the challenges of the wild? Once the monkeys are released in the forest, should the people give them food, shoo away predators, rescue them if they get lost, and treat them if they are injured? Or should they be hands-off, letting the monkeys fend for themselves and become wild as quickly as possible? Beck describes the reintroduction of the first 13 tamarins, capturing their fierce determination to survive, their loves and conflicts, their nurturant families, adorable babies, hidden language, sometimes hilarious attempts to solve the problems of adapting, and the agonizing deaths of those who don't make it. He describes the power and beauty of the rainforest, and the loves, loyalties, conflicts, and sometimes hilarious bumbling by their human caretakers. Challenging their betterknown bosses, two women, a zookeeper and a Brazilian field assistant, discover the right way to reintroduce the monkeys. But a well-known Rio citizen almost destroys the program in a callous act of vanity. The story is vivid and authentic; Beck was there and has studied animal thinking and monkey and ape conservation for more than 40 years. About the Author: Benjamin Beck, a scientist emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution, is an expert on reintroducing captive-born and orphaned primates to the wild, having coordinated the highly successful reintroduction of golden lion tamarin monkeys to the Atlantic Coastal Forest of Brazil and having been senior author of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Best Practice Guidelines for the Re-introduction of Great Apes. Beck has published dozens of peer-reviewed scientific articles and books, but has more recently turned to novels to bring the lessons of his scientific and conservation work to a wider audience.
