In the Community STEPHEN HALSEY - QUEST FOR POWER - Wednesday, October 5, 2016 - 8:00pm. China’s history in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries has often been framed as a long coda of imperial decline, played out during its last dynasty, the Qing. Quest for Power presents a sweeping reappraisal of this narrative. Stephen Halsey traces the origins of China’s great-power status in the twentieth century to this era of supposed decadence and decay. Threats from European and Japanese imperialism and the growing prospect of war triggered China’s most innovative state-building efforts since the Qing dynasty’s founding in the mid-1600s. Through a combination of imitation and experimentation, a new form of political organization took root in China between 1850 and 1949 that shared features with modern European governments. Like them, China created a military-fiscal state to ensure security in a hostile international arena. The Qing Empire extended its administrative reach by expanding the bureaucracy and creating a modern police force. It poured funds into the military, commissioning ironclad warships, reorganizing the army, and promoting the development of an armaments industry. State-built telegraph and steamship networks transformed China’s communication and transportation infrastructure. Increasingly, Qing officials described their reformist policies through a new vocabulary of sovereignty―a Western concept that has been a cornerstone of Chinese statecraft ever since. As Halsey shows, the success of the Chinese military-fiscal state after 1850 enabled China to avoid wholesale colonization at the hands of Europe and Japan and laid the foundation for its emergence as a global power in the twentieth century. About the Author: Stephen R. Halsey is Associate Professor of History at the University of Miami.

KIDS: SOMAN CHAINANI - THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD AND EVIL: THE NEVER EVER HANDBOOK - Friday, October 7, 2016 - 7:00pm. Wish you could go to the School for Good and Evil? Now you can! Join the ranks of heroes and villains who have walked these hallowed halls and mastered what it takes to be placed in their own fairy tales with The Ever Never Handbook. Soman Chainani’s New York Times bestselling series (The School for Good and Evil, A World Without Princes, and The Last Ever After) comes to life in this handbook full of everything students need to learn in order to survive their own fairy tale—from dress codes and school rules to alumni portraits, kingdom maps, and much, much more. Every year, students flock to the School for Good and Evil, ready to prepare for life in a fairy tale. The highest-ranked students become the heroes and villains of the fairy tales, while the lowest end up enchanted animals or plants (if they’re lucky, that is). This handbook is a personal guide to help students to the top of their class—from surviving Uglification, to picking your own sidekick or henchman, to earning a part in the yearly school musical, and so much more. And of course, it’s in glorious full color and duotone because in the School for Good and Evil, very little is black-and-white. About the Author: Soman Chainani’s first novel, The School for Good and Evil, debuted on the New York Times bestseller list, as did each of its two sequels, A World Without Princes and The Last Ever After. The series has been translated into over twenty languages across six continents and will soon be a major motion picture from Universal Pictures. As a graduate of Harvard University and Columbia University’s MFA Film Program, Soman has made films that have played at over 150 festivals around the world, and his writing awards include the Sun Valley Writers’ Fellowship. When he’s not telling stories or teaching in New York City, Soman is a die-hard tennis player who never lost a first-round match for ten years . . . until he started writing The School for Good and Evil. Now he loses all the time. You can visit Soman at www.somanchainani.net.

In the Community ROBERT BUSCHEL - SILENT MAJORITY - Friday, October 7, 2016 - 8:00pm. President Dan Carlson’s record is praiseworthy. His leadership has brought economic stability and progress in its wake; he has fought off a terrorist threat to the country, he has inspired voters with his strong views on education and his personal integrity. Calm in the face of others’ chaos, the press has declared his a ‘zen platform’; the President preferred to see it as having a long view of any given problem. The story of what he did before he was President is no different—as a lawyer in the Department of Justice’s office in Florida he fought the mob, the KKK, and more. He is just days before an election that should deliver him easily into a second term. So what could go wrong? Robert Buschel’s thriller debut, BY SILENT MAJORITY (Post Hill Press/August 30, 2016/$ 25) conjures up a tumultuous political scene that rivals the current headlines. Moving from the present day and then back and forth in time, Carlson sets in motion a complex story tracing the rise of an unexpected politician from Florida. Suspenseful from the start, Buschel’s first novel trades in both the diplomatic and clandestine decisions that critically shift events around the world as well as the changing mores that dictate what leadership should look like in the Oval Office every four years. Behind the scenes in this glittering administration is Peter Sparks, Carlson’s oldest and closest friend, the man who had wanted the position Carlson has but has long accepted that his would be the power behind the scenes. He and Carlson have been close since law school. Peter was the outgoing one, the one who was destined to be the one out in front, the one who always saw politics and power as the goal. Daniel Carlson was quieter, more reflective though his ability to charm was unquestioned. When Peter is forced by party officials to step aside from that trajectory, there was no question that Daniel would take his place and that Peter would be his partner, albeit behind the scenes, in the pursuit of the ultimate prize: the White House. Together they build an impressive campaign, Daniel inspiring, Peter working in the dark on those who would see Carlson fail at best, dead at worst. Peter’s past connections—the one he’s never let Daniel know the full story behind—lead him to people and plots never suspected by his idealist best friend. But Peter is not the only one harboring secrets. The first family has theirs too: Carlson’s wife June about her first marriage, the children about their friends and youthful decisions gone wrong. Daniel Carlson though has harbored a secret for a long time though and now it is about to be exposed. Who will uncover it and for what price? Are voters ready to hear—and forgive—what they are about to find out about the man they thought they knew? Robert Buschel sets the stakes high in this exploration of character and power—both of those in power and those who wield, silently, from the voting booth. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Robert Buschel was born in Brooklyn, New York but grew up in the battleground state of Florida. He is now an attorney in Florida who handles both criminal and civil cases, some of which have been featured on 48 Hours, Dateline as well as other national news outlets and in People, USA Today, The Miami Herald and the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. He is a member of the Florida Bar, California Bar and admitted as Attorney of the United States Supreme Court. When he is not practicing law he flies compassion missions for the medically needy as a private pilot. By Silent Majority is his first novel.

STAN JAKUBOWICZ - ISRA & LITO - Saturday, October 8, 2016 - 11:30am. This is the story of Isra & Lito. Isra loves art. For him, the world is a big canvas and everyone add its own color to it. He likes painting walls and making streets a happier place. Lito loves skateboarding. He enjoys seeing the city on top of his skateboard. For Lito, looking at the city's shapes and colors while rolling on his skateboard feels like a spectacle. But both Isra & Lito hide big secrets. And you are about to find out what their secrets are. Based on true events, “Isra & Lito” is a story about dreams, love, passion, family and the role of police in today’s society. About the Author: Stan Jakubowicz is an award-winning filmmaker and journalist who has written, produced, directed films and TV shows focusing on equality, impunity, race, justice and art. This is his first children's book. It is the beginning of a series of stories that take real life events and deconstruct them so children can understand the world better.

JORGE A. BARRIERE-MENDEZ - OUT OF THE WOODS - Sunday, October 9, 2016 - 5:00pm. “OUT OF THE WOODS, An Applied Theory of Self” is a thought-provoking template for introspection and the vanquishing of fear. An inspiring and insightful guide to life. A brilliantly crafted elucidation of a path to selfdiscovery and personal growth. In describing the book, Barriere-Mendez states “I stand here with a difficult task: to propose and to discuss an Applied Theory of Self that saved my life. Let me say that again – saved my life. I wish someone else had written it thirty years ago and had placed it in my hands. It would have been a life with less heartache and headaches. A better, fuller life.” This powerful book is an incredibly stimulating read. It takes the ontological perspective of idealism to negotiate a compromise between determinism and indeterminism. BarriereMendez asserts that the true nature of reality is internal and that we must become familiar with this inner reality in order to conquer our fears. He posits that this awareness and victory over fear is what sets those who truly determine the course of their own lives apart from those who do not. This book allows the reader to find a simpler, truer reality where they can be themselves fearlessly — a spirituality that’s based on experience and not necessarily faith; a practical spirituality to be practiced in our world and reality and not on distant mountain tops. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jorge A. Barriere-Mendez was born in Cuba and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. He studied Literature and Philosophy and has published two earlier books: Vacuity in 2003 and Shadowboxing in 2015. Both of his previous publications are collections of short stories. Barriere-Mendez is also conducting seminars where he teaches his philosophy and provides the tools for a better more productive life, as found in his latest book.

In the Community MARÍA CARLA CHICUÉN- ACHIEVE THE COLLEGE DREAM - Tuesday, October 11, 2016 - 8:00pm. Students with few resources rarely apply to top colleges. Even when they have the academic and extracurricular merits to be admitted to institutions like Harvard, Yale and Princeton, these students usually opt for less selective universities. Many ignore that top colleges are actively seeking outstanding candidates regardless of their economic background. What’s more, a great number of colleges offers generous financial aid to make sure every student can afford to attend. This book is the definitive resource to help high-achieving, low-income students access the best possible college. The author draws from her extensive experience in education to provide advice on important aspects of the path to college such as pursuing a strong high school curriculum, preparing for standardized exams, complementing learning at school, developing leadership, and finding expert help and role models—all through affordable strategies. In the book, the author also guides students through the college application and selection processes, as well as the steps to obtain enough financial aid. From the very first page, the author sheds light on her own journey to college through deeply personal vignettes, demonstrating by example that students with few resources can reach and succeed at the top universities in the United States. About the Author: María Carla Chicuén is an education advocate with over ten years of experience at renowned organizations such as ACT, Harvard University, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, Minerva Schools and Miami Dade College. WAYNE PACELLE - THE HUMANE ECONOMY - Friday, October 14, 2016 - 12:00pmA NEW YORK TIMES, WASHINGTON POST, and LOS ANGELES TIMES BESTSELLER. "ESSENTIAL READING." — JANE GOODALL. "A CRITICALLY IMPORTANT BOOK." — JACK WELCH. From the leader of the nation’s most powerful animal-protection organization comes a frontline account of how conscience and creativity are driving a revolution in American business that is changing forever how we treat animals and create wealth. Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society of the United States reveals how entrepreneurs, Fortune 500 CEOs, world-class scientists, philanthropists, and a new class of political leaders are driving the burgeoning, unstoppable growth of the “humane economy.” Every business grounded on animal exploitation, Pacelle argues, is ripe for disruption. Indeed each one of us is, and will be, touched by this far-reaching transformation in food and agriculture; in the pharmaceutical, chemical, and cosmetics industries; in film, television, and live entertainment; in tourism and wildlife management; in the pet trade for dogs and cats and exotic wildlife; and in fur and leather fashions. Collectively it promises to relieve or end the suffering of billions of creatures, while allowing businesses aligned with the best instincts and values of their customers to flourish. Pacelle shows, for instance, how the cruelties of industrial chicken farming are quickly becoming obsolete with a visit to Hampton Creek, the makers of a plant-based egg substitute and the world’s fastest-growing food startup ever. Pacelle also recounts the stories of how established companies are joining in this economic transformation: from Petco and PetSmart, which have turned the conventional pet store model on its head by forswearing puppy mill suppliers in favor of shelter dogs; to John Paul Mitchell Systems, the Body Shop, and Lush, which use safe ingredients instead of animal tests for their cosmetics; to major food retailers like Whole Foods, Chipotle, and even Costco and Walmart, which are embracing animal welfare standards that are one by one unwinding the horrors of the factory farm. The Humane Economy is a clarion call to business leaders and to the world’s growing animal protection movement; it is equally a warning to the static thinking of animal-use industries and their apologists: “Here, in this humane economy,” Pacelle argues, “human ingenuity meets human virtue, and we discover at last that we can have it both ways – a better world for us and for animals, too.” About the Author: Wayne Pacelle is President and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, which is one of the nation's top charities. Pacelle is a passionate defender of animals and an inspiration to millions of supporters and advocates. He's seen cruelty and compassion up close in his work, and he writes about the timeless but still ever-changing bond between humans and animals. He explores how that bond has been broken in so many ways in the industrial era. Pacelle, who has led the humane movement from the margins to the mainstream, takes readers to ice floes of Atlantic Canada and the sealers' assault on the greatest wildlife nursery in the world, gives them a glimpse of a freshly shuttered slaughter plant in California, plunges them into the chaos of animal rescue in the aftermath of Katrina, and provides them with a front-row seat as he and Michael Vick talk in a prison courtyard about dogfighting and the human-animal bond. In the end, Pacelle tells us about the new, humane economy and a way forward that is good for us and good for animals.
