LAURA LEE HUTTENBACH - THE BOY IS GONE - Wednesday, July 15, 2015 - 8pm A story with the power to change how people view the last years of colonialism in East Africa, The Boy Is Gone portrays the struggle for Kenyan independence in the words of a freedom fighter whose life spanned the twentieth century's most dramatic transformations. Born into an impoverished farm family in the Meru Highlands, Japhlet Thambu grew up wearing goatskins and lived to stand before his community dressed for business in a pressed suit, crisp tie, and freshly polished shoes. For most of the last four decades, however, he dressed for work in the primary school classroom and on his lush tea farm. The General, as he came to be called from his leadership of the Mau Mau uprising sixty years ago, narrates his life story in conversation with Laura Lee Huttenbach, a young American who met him while backpacking in Kenya in 2006. A gifted storyteller with a keen appreciation for language and a sense of responsibility as a repository of his people's history, the General talks of his childhood in the voice of a young boy, his fight against the British in the voice of a soldier, and his long life in the voice of shrewd elder. While his life experiences are his alone, his story adds immeasurably to the long history of decolonization as it played out across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. About the Author: Laura Lee P. Huttenbach, a graduate of the University of Virginia, has written dispatches from South America, the Middle East, and Africa.

PAUL LEVINE - BUM RAP - Friday, July 17, 2015 - 8:00pm. NFL linebacker-turned-lawyer Jake Lassiter has had it with shifty clients, dirty prosecutors, and a legal system out of whack. It’s enough to make a man want to leave Miami and never look back—until he gets a call from Victoria Lord, the better half of hot local legal team Solomon & Lord. Her partner in life and law has been arrested for murder. What’s worse: the only person who can clear him has fled the city. Now it’s up to Jake and Victoria to track down the witness—a stunning “Bar girl”—before she’s roped in by the feds…or eliminated by the Russian mob. Jake knows that if he doesn’t get to the witness first, his client’s case is lost. Luckily, he’s got some good advice from his college football coach: “Buckle your chin strap and hit somebody.” And sometimes, the only way to win a tough case is to do just that. About the Author: PAUL LEVINE worked as a newspaper reporter, a law professor and a trial lawyer before becoming a full-time novelist. Paul claims that writing fiction comes naturally: he told whoppers for many years in his legal briefs. His books have been translated into 23 languages, none of which he can read. He has won the John D. MacDonald fiction award and has been nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe Award, the Macavity, the International Thriller Writers Award, the Shamus Award, and the James Thurber Humor Prize. He is best known for two series of legal thrillers: "Jake Lassiter" and "Solomon vs. Lord." A Miami Dolphins linebacker turned hard-nosed lawyer, Lassiter has been described by Booklist as "one of the most entertaining series characters in contemporary crime fiction." In USA Today, Larry King wrote: "Mystery writing at its very, very best." There are eleven books in the series, beginning with "To Speak for the Dead" which is still going strong 25 years after initial hardcover publication. "Solomon vs. Lord" is a fast-paced, battle-of-the-sexes dramedy featuring two young Miami lawyers -- Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord -- who duel in and out of court. The Chicago Sun-Times praised the legal caper as: "Remarkably fresh and original with characters you can't help loving and sparkling dialogue that echoes the Hepburn-Tracy screwball comedies. A hilarious, touching and entertaining twist on the legal thriller." The book is the first of four in the series. New in 2015: "Bum Rap," which brings together Lassiter with Solomon & Lord. Jake has had it with sleazy clients, shifty prosecutors, and a legal system out of whack. He's about to hang up his shingle when Victoria Lord calls. Solomon has been arrested for murder. What's worse: the only person who can clear him has disappeared. Now it's up to Lassiter and Lord to track down the witness--a stunning Bar girl-before she's roped in by the feds...or eliminated by the Russian mob. Paul wrote 23 episodes of the TV series "JAG," which gave him an opportunity to steer a nuclear submarine and land on the deck of an aircraft carrier, all without endangering national security. He is a graduate of Penn State University where he majored in journalism and the University of Miami Law School where he majored in the swimming pool. He passed the Florida Bar exam in his first try in what he suspects was a computer glitch. He was a trial lawyer with the mammoth international law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, where he did not even pretend to know all his partners' names. He specialized in "complex litigation," cases so abstruse that even lawyers charging 800 bucks an hour didn't fully understand them. He tried hundreds of cases and handled appeals at every level, including the Supreme Court. Along the way, he filed expense accounts nearly as creative as his legal briefs. Paul says he enjoys writing more than lawyering because he no longer keeps time sheets and gets to work in his underwear. He formerly lived in the hills of Southern California, which he claims are populated by rattlesnakes and coyotes, and those are just the Hollywood agents. Paul recently moved back to Miami, a place Joan Didion once called "a rich and wicked pastel boomtown." But to Paul, it's just a place where the "mosquitoes are biting, but the fish ain't."

In the Community ILAN EHRLICH - EDUARDO CHIBÁS: THE INCORRIGIBLE MAN OF CUBAN POLITICS - Saturday, August 1, 2015 - 2:00pm. This comprehensive biography of Eduardo René Chibás (1907–1951) traces the life and times of Cuba’s most popular and charismatic politician during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Chibás, whose admirers included young Fidel Castro, emphasized honesty in Cuban public life and promised to sweep away corrupt politicians during his popular Sunday broadcasts. His ties with supporters, many of whom knew him simply as “Eddy,” were closer and more informal than any previous Cuban politician. During his 1948 presidential campaign, Chibás often hurled himself into the arms of adoring supporters after speeches. Such gestures were met with wonder and disgust by politicians more accustomed to buying votes than winning hearts. His suicide in 1951 dashed the dreams of his followers—who hoped he would deliver an honest government that provided services for the island’s poor and respected Cuba’s progressive 1940 constitution. His death, which was followed seven months hence by a military coup and eight years later by Castro’s revolution, represents one of the great what ifs of Cuban politics. This seminal work explores Chibás’s life in order to explain the nature of Cuban politics from the midtwentieth century to today. Ilan Ehrlich is assistant professor of history at Bergen Community College.
