A Spouse Symposium was held on Saturday, September 13th at the Conference Center of the Americas. The program was held to provide information to new spouses on command and military programs and services and to provide updated information for other spouses. Forty-four spouses attended the morning session which consisted of briefings on the U.S. Southern Command and U.S. Army Garrison-Miami missions and provided information on School Liaison Services, Military Spouse Employment, Humana Military (TRICARE) and the Employee Assistance Program. Spouses who volunteer in their local communities were able to register with the command as volunteers. After lunch, spouses were able to attend the Community Information Fair which provided information from 19 military and community agencies and programs who provide support and resources for military Families. A program for children, Summer Splash, was also held. Summer Splash was a back to school activity for our children and included indoor recreation activities for the younger school aged children and a baby sitting and CPR class for teenagers. After lunch, all youth enjoyed a variety of waterslides along with cotton candy and snow cones. A special thank you to the Miami-Dade Defense Alliance for providing bags and helping offset the cost of this event. If you have not already done so, feel free to provide feedback on both activities through the Interactive Customer Evaluation (ICE) Comment Card at https://ice.disa.mil/index.cfm?fa=card&sp=100891&s=628&dep=*DoD&sc=15. Your feedback is important as we begin the process of planning next year’s event. Check out the photos here: https://www. flickr.com/photos/usag-miami/sets/72157647235725198/.

OKTOBERFEST! Oktoberfest in September?

Yes, Oktoberfest actually starts in September and goes to the first Sunday in October. The delicious September 20 with the tapping of the first beer meal was prepared and served by Great Chefs keg. Although we did not have a keg of beer of America. To really make it authentic, MWR to tap, everyone did get to enjoy a cold beer brought in a traditional oom-pah band playing at our festivities on September 19, courtesy of Eagle Brand Sales. The opening remarks were given by the new Garrison Manager, Mr. Andy Bird, who surprised us all by doing so in German. He introduced Maj Gen Nowland, who officially opened the festivities and kicked off the CFC campaign, noting how important it is to give back even in tough times.
A special thanks to the Family and MWR team that put forth such great effort in making this and all MWR events happen. They may be a small team but they surely are a powerful one that gets the job done each and every time.
The Garrison MWR team brought a little bit of all the favorite Oktoberfest songs. The very Munich to Miami for this quarter’s workforce entertaining band members came dressed in appreciation event. They beautifully lederhosen and really set the mood. We might not have crammed in 10,000 people like some of the beer tents in Munich, but we had well over 1,000 folks attend the fun-filled event. This was our second Oktoberfest, and so far, it has been the most popular theme of all. As always, we thank our great sponsors that helped put on this wonderful event and others. Tremendous thanks goes to Eagle Brand Sales, Open Health Clinical Group, Veterans4You, and USAA. We could not do it without them. We hope everyone who attended had a great time and we look forward to the next event and seeing every one there.

CHILD YOUTH AND SCHOOL SERVICES NEWS School Age Center Program The Child Development Center (CDC) provides services to school-aged students in kindergarten to 5th grade through a before and after school program. The program offers a positive environment where children can develop their cognitive skills while having fun with different clubs and Power Hour. Club-based programs in four service areas are provided: Sports & Fitness, Fine Arts, Citizenship & Leadership, Science, and Leisure & Recreation. Academic Power Hour is provided throughout the school year. Enrollees from Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Broward County Public Schools, as well as those who attend Charter Schools receive support from subject matter experts through homework assistance. While this activity is voluntary, children take advantage of this opportunity to expand what is learned at school and parents are able to fully enjoy quality time at home because homework is done.

The groups also provide a channel for spouses to get information about what happens at the command and in the surrounding civilian communities. The Zip Code Groups are a means of social interaction and camaraderie for spouses similar to that provided by the Officers and Enlisted Spouses Groups located on traditional military bases. The Zip Code Groups are organized in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. Electronic Sponsorship Application and Training Sponsorship is key to a military Family’s successful move. It helps create unit cohesion and a smoother transition to a new installation and community. Recognizing the importance of successful sponsorship, the DoD, in conjunction with the military services, created the Electronic Sponsorship Application and Training application to bring standardized sponsorship training to all appointed unit sponsors regardless of service branch. Service members can access the eSAT website using their common access card or CAC. The application is secure and will provide an official certificate for your unit records. The Electronic Sponsorship Application and Training (www. militaryhomefront.dod.mil/) is designed to support military service members who have been assigned the responsibility of sponsorship to better serve newcomers who have received permanent change of station orders. Key features include the following: • An online training course for sponsors with links to all DoD and service branch websites that support the PCS process; • A downloadable checklist of the sponsor’s duties and a printable certificate of completion for his or her records; • A downloadable needs assessment the sponsor uses to create customized welcome packages with service-specific links, information and advanced applications for housing and child care.
SOCSOUTH - www.facebook.com/groups/socsouthredfam
The online training module and downloadable tools include a sample initial e-mail message and branch-specific welcome letters tailored to family status.
HOMESTEAD - www.facebook.com/groups/ HomesteadMilitaryWives
All service members appointed as sponsors are eligible for eSAT and may use their CAC to log in to the eSAT website.
