FAMILY SUPPORT NEWS Ten Tips for Job Fairs

Job fairs are excellent places to learn, network and land a job. You could easily miss your ideal job opportunity while trying to work through the crowd. But here are some planning tips to provide that edge over your competitors who fail to properly prepare. 1. If the websites of job fair producers offer the option, search for jobs in advance, to target the most promising, participating employers. Read the employers’ profiles if available, to help you answer the classic question, “Why do you want to work for us?” Even if job fair producers don’t offer these options, most at least list the participating employers and the general types of jobs they have open, so you may research them on your own. 2. Plan to take at least 20 crisp resumes to a job fair, 30 or so if it’s a huge event. The job fair might have copy facilities for free or a small fee, which is nice if you run out. But don’t count on it ahead of time. Bring a pen, pencil and notepad too, and organize it all in a nice brief case or portfolio. 3. Before a job fair, prepare to interview on the spot. A 30 second commercial is a statement to describe the skills and services that you have to offer an employer. It’s better to politely sidestep up-front salary discussions if you can. But have

a salary figure in mind, just in case your interview advances to the salary stage. Job fairs tend to be more casual than formal interviews, so you can relax and be friendlier. and display enthusiasm.

10. Remember to visit job fair employer’s sites that interest you after the event as they may have new openings they don’t forward to the producers after the job fair. If you want to know what’s going on with your resume or if you see a new position, 4. Also prepare to fill out a job application send a follow-up letter or letter of inquiry on the spot. Unless you’re otherwise instead. The employer will let you know if directed, it’s best to turn it in right away. you should submit your resume again. Taking it home first allows your betterprepared competitors to beat you to it. 5. Arrive a few minutes early at a job fair, to register, if required, and plan your “attack.” Pick up a booth map if available, and route your path to the employers you’ve targeted. Visit your targeted employers first with resume in hand, and spend some “quality time” with each. 6. When wrapping up your conversations with employers’ reps, show your interest by asking them what the next steps are. Ask if it’s okay to call them or send follow-up letters a few days after the job fair ends. 7. Track which employers you’ve submitted your resume at the job fair, so you don’t redundantly resubmit it too soon. It’s a good idea to jot down other notes too, right after you talk with each rep. 8. Collect business cards or contact info as you go, and do follow up within 2448 hours with a thank-you letter to each of the representatives with whom you spoke. It’s courteous, professional and typically expected, even after casual job fairs. Complying might make you stand out in their minds, to help you land follow-up interviews.

Magnet and Charter School Applications for School Year 2016/2017 To attend magnet schools, students must meet academic requirements. Charter school selections are determined by a lottery system. To ensure lottery placement, applying at the beginning of the application process is key. If you are interested in having your child attend a magnet or charter school for school year 2016/2017, the application process is open from 1 December 2015 to 10 February 2016 for Broward Schools and from 1 October to 15 January 2016 for Miami Dade-Schools. The lottery for most charter schools will begin in January 2016 and applications can be submitted then. If you are interested in having your child attend the new Downtown Doral Charter School Preschool 3 & 4, applications may be submitted 1 October 2015 - 1 March and includes a fee. To ensure on-time submission of applications, visit your school of choice website,

Provided students meet requirements and space is available, priority is given to active duty military members applying to attend Magnet Schools. Verification of active service requires that the sponsor provide a copy of their military orders. The method in which priority is implemented is at the discretion of the school. While charter schools do not have a written agreement to provide priority placement to service members, most schools try to accommodate. Priority placement for charter schools is a courtesy and not a policy. This year, new applicants planning to attend Miami Dade Magnet schools can submit all required documents online to

include military orders; by submitting orders you are indicating your military status. This new process allows you to submit your package before you move to the Miami area. If you are new to USSOUTHCOM or US Army Garrison-Miami, please, register your child with the School Liaison Office. To give you a head start, school supplies are available free of charge, (while supplies last.) Domestic Abuse: Military Reporting Options Deciding whether to report domestic abuse can be difficult. Victims of domestic abuse may feel confused, alone or afraid to get help. If your partner is abusive, knowing your reporting options may help you decide what’s best for you and your family. The Department of Defense is committed to addressing and ending domestic abuse. Except in select circumstances, victims have the option of making either a restricted or an unrestricted report of domestic abuse. Both options allow access to personal help and support, also known as victim advocacy services. Victim advocates can support victims of domestic abuse by providing: • Help with safety plans • Information on helping resources and referrals Information about military and civilian protective orders • Accompaniment to meetings, medical and court appointments

• Restricted reporting Knowledge is power, and confidential information and support can help you decide how to proceed. You may contact a Family Advocacy Program counselor or victim advocate, or military health care provider to request a restricted report. Making a restricted report means: • No law enforcement notification • No command involvement • Access to medical care, counseling and support • Victim advocacy services • Time to evaluate your relationship choices • Control over what and how much information to share with others. Because victim safety is a priority, if you are in immediate risk of serious harm, you cannot use the restricted reporting option. The restricted reporting option does not apply to child abuse cases. • Unrestricted reporting If, and when, you’re ready to make an

unrestricted report to law enforcement, you may contact the Family Advocacy Program, military police or chain of command. Making an unrestricted report provides you with: • Law enforcement investigation of an abuse incident, • Command notification, • Potential administrative action against the offender Support and, • Protection from the command • Victim advocacy services, • Information on legal rights • Assistance in applying for transitional compensation, if applicable. In an abusive relationship, deciding what to do is rarely easy. But, knowing your options is the first step to ending abuse and creating a safer and happier life. If you are a victim of domestic abuse, visit MilitaryINSTALLATIONS to locate the closest Family Advocacy Program or contact the National Domestic Abuse Hotline at 800.799.SAFE (7233). The Family Advocacy Program in Miami can be reached by calling 305.437.2734.

ACS DIRECTOR’S CORNER ZIP CODE GROUPS The Zip Code Groups at USSOUTHCOM are organized by place of residence and offer an opportunity to meet new friends. The groups also provide a channel for spouses to get information about what happens at the command and in the surrounding civilian communities. The Zip Code Groups are a means of social interaction and camaraderie for spouses similar to that provided by the Officers and Enlisted Spouses Groups located on traditional military bases. The Zip Code Groups are organized in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. For additional information, contact Army Community Service at 305.437.2644 or one of the Zip Code Group Coordinators listed below:
