n 5 August, the United States Army Garrison-Miami (USAG-Miami) hosted the 2nd annual community fair, which was themed “It’s A Family Affair.” The community fair is an event designed to welcome newly-arrived service members and their Families and to inform them of all the programs and services provided by USAG-Miami and the surrounding area. This year, we had approximately 68 venders, 20 sponsors and donors, and about 1300 participants, which made the event a huge success. It truly was, “A Family Affair,” as free train rides, demonstrations and static displays from the Miami-Dade Police Special Response Team, K-9 Unit and bomb squad robot, free food samplings, door prizes, school supplies give-away, exercise demonstrations and a youth orchestra all made for a great day of fun for the entire family.

Several outside agencies that provide support to military members and their Families participated. The City of Doral provided information on the amenities available and new parks that will provide even more recreational opportunities for our customers and their Families. Door prize winners were: Two Katana Swords Josh Boone; Two tickets to Million Dollar Quartet at Actor’s Playhouse - Crystal Riberro; and a gift card to Dolphin Mall - Melissa Erte, Special thanks to all the volunteers that helped make this a truly awesome event. Our next big event is OKTOBERFEST, September 30!

It may seem like your credit score and how you manage it is nobody else’s business. You may think your credit score doesn’t matter, because you don’t use credit cards, you don’t have a huge need for accessing credit or you don’t care much about the difference a credit score makes in the interest rates you qualify for in the event you need a loan. The truth is, your credit score can have a bigger impact on your life than you may think it does. Here are some examples of people who care about your credit score…

The Credit Card Company Credit cards may be one of the most polarizing things in personal finance — many consumers love them, plenty of people avoid them, and a huge number of people go back and forth between enjoying cards’ convenience and loathing the debt they fell into as a result.

As great as credit cards are for helping consumers build credit and finance some expenses, they’re not a necessity. Much of the convenience credit cards offer can be found on debit cards, so if you never want to deal with credit cards, you don’t have to.

Gold Star Families: Honoring America’s Ultimate Sacrifice According to the United States Army, the term Gold Star Family is a modern reference that comes from the Service Flag, first flown by families during World War I. This flag included a blue star for all immediate family members with loved ones serving in the armed forces during any period of war or hostilities. In the event a loved one perished, this blue star was replaced by a gold star. This was a testimonial to the community that this family had lost a loved one to the cause of freedom with the ultimate sacrifice.

On the last Sunday in September 1936, America began observing Gold Star Mother’s Day. Before

the end of World War II, Gold Star Wives was formed. In August 1947, the Gold Star lapel button was established, a sacred symbol of the losing of a loved one who died serving America.

Today, whenever a father, mother, sister, brother, son, or daughter, or any loved one dies serving our country, they are recognized as a Gold Star Family member. This is a solemn tribute recognizing those who have given the ultimate sacrifice and their families. These sacrifices are the most profound expression of American patriotism. The sacrifice of all who lost heroes deserves America’s most heartfelt respect, dignity, and gratitude. All who have died serving our nation, as well as their grieving families, must always be honored without compromise.

These small lapel buttons, or pins, as they are commonly called, are normally presented to eligible Family members prior to the military funeral service.

Although they are less than an inch in size, they are packed with great meaning and emotion. They are not awards. They are symbols of honor. Here is how you can tell them apart.

I did not receive a pin, where do I get one?

If you are an eligible family member, but did not receive the lapel button to which you are entitled, you can request one through the National Archives. You can also apply for a replacement should yours ever be lost or damaged. If you would like help applying for a new or replacement Lapel Button, contact Survivor Outreach Services at 305.437.2178.

Military Spouse Employment Program H&R Block Scholarship Opportunity The Military Spouse Employment Program (MSEP) employer, H&R Block, is offering a Military Scholarship for military spouses and wounded warriors. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in working during tax season.

Priority Placement Program (PPP) Military Spouse Preference (MSP) for Federal Employment The Priority Placement Program (PPP) provides military spouses an opportunity to exercise a preference for Department of Defense (DOD) positions who meet certain criteria. Military Spouse Preference applies to DOD vacancies only, and there are variations and exceptions that allow local hiring authorities to tailor their policies to meet their requirements.

What are the eligibility requirements of the MSP? • Spouse of an active duty member of the U.S. Military Services to include Coast Guard or full-time National Guard.

• Must be relocating (not for separation or retirement) to accompany your military sponsor under a permanent change of station (PCS) move to an active duty assignment; eligible to apply for Military Spouse Preference (MSP) as early as thirty days prior to your reporting date at the new duty station • Need to be married to the military sponsor prior to the sponsor’s reporting date at the new assignment

How to register for MSP: • If you meet the requirement for eligibility, you must apply for Program “S,” the Priority Placement Program for military spouses.

This is the only way you can exercise your military spouse preference for an APF position (within CONUS). You can apply for the program through your local CPO. You will be asked to provide certain documentation, which includes: - a copy of your sponsor’s PCS orders - a copy of an SF-50 (if you have prior federal employment experience) or your DD214 (if you are a former service member) - a copy of your most recent performance appraisal (if you are a current or former federal employee) - other documentation, such as college transcripts or licenses, as required for the position.

Networking Tips for Spouses

Who: Military spouse of an active, retired or reserve military service member, Wounded Warriors (as defined by the DoD), Wounded Warrior’s spouse and widow/widower of military service member fallen during combat. Must have a DoD I.D. card

Where: Nationwide – Not available in states where restricted by local state law.

It is important to apply even if you’re not intending on working at your new duty station to ensure your name is register with the program!

• Position applied for must be within commuting distance of the sponsor’s permanent new duty station • A “best qualified” rank must be obtained by the spouse applying for the position.

MSP preference is given over other candidates except disabled veterans, employees registered in the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) program, and former employees returning from overseas. MSP applies to federal employment within the DOD civil service or Appropriated Fund (APF,) and Non-Appropriated Funds (NAF.) They are considered separate hiring authorities and generally have separate hiring offices on military installations.

The action began Saturday morning and ended two minutes early in the championship game on Sunday afternoon with the Warriors emerging victorious over MJ Hoops 87-71 in a shooting exhibition. Henderson Hall took third.

There were a total of nine teams participating including the Warriors, Henderson Hall Marine Base from Virginia, Miami Basketball, MJ Hoops, FAA, Coast Guard, High Energy, Under Dogs and Team QP. The Most Valuable Player for the tournament was Paul Kramer, a Fitness Center employee who played for the Warriors. All-tournament team players were Cliff Tucker (Henderson Hall,) Keion Palmer (MJ Hoops,) and Heaven Jean, Shain Nelson and Demetrius Brownlee of the Warriors. Congratulations to the Warriors! n 13 August, the Family and MWR fitness center hosted the 2nd Annual Bodybuilding Competition. For a few hours, the basketball courts were converted into a bodybuilding arena for our competitors. This year, there were two competitors from the command, USMC Capt Bradley Gilmer and Mr. Antoine Brooks. The competitors lined up on the stage to perform specific poses and later perform individual posing routines for a panel of guest judges. The judges ranked the competitors based on criteria like symmetry, muscularity and conditioning. During intermission, the crowd was wowed by 72 year old Cristoval Gutierrez, retired World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Wrestler, also known as Chief Running Deer.

Congratulations to our competitors from the command, as they both took home trophies this year.

Mr. Antoine Brooks won first place in both Overall Bodybuilding and Class B Men's Physique Capt Bradley Gilmer won third place Men's Physique Class B.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has launched a mobile App to help families prepare for a wide array of natural and manmade disasters and help affected Americans recover when a disaster occurs. The App provides: • Severe weather alerts from the National Weather Service for up to five locations across the United States. It also provides information about how to stay safe.

• A Disaster Reporter to crowdsource and share disaster-related information for events occurring within the United States. The Disaster Reporter allows users to view and contribute information on a publicly accessible map. Users can also share photos of damage and provide a short text description.

• A map to allow users to locate and receive driving directions to open shelters and disaster recovery centers.

• Easy access to DisasterAssistance.gov to apply for federal disaster assistance.

• Tools to develop a custom list of items in the user’s family emergency kit, as well as the places the family will meet in case of an emergency.

• Safety tips and preparedness reminders on how to stay safe before, during, and after over 20 types of hazards, including floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes.
