USAG Grafenwoehr Assumption of Command Ceremony 17 Jan: All community members are invited to attend the Assumption of Command Ceremony for Colonel James E. Saenz at 2 p.m. at the Main Post Physical Fitness Center, Bldg. 170. Colonel Saenz will be assuming command of the United States Army Garrison Grafenwoehr.
Open Saturday at the Vilseck Veterinary Treatment Facility 21 Jan: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Rose Barracks Bldg. 222 (opposite Tumbleweeds, next to the Launderette). The VTF is providing more access to care for families and Soldiers outside of normal working hours by offering walk-in appointments to receive basic vaccinations in addition to nail trims, heartworm tests, health certificates, microchipping and over the counter sales & registration. Additionally, in the last three months, the VTF has been between supply contracts and unable to provide all the medications, special diets, and over the counter products expected. They are pleased to announce that the new contracts are in place and working well and can now supply family pets with the same level of care and products again. Lil' Mister and Miss Grafenwoehr Pageant on Rose Barracks Presented by the Vilseck and Grafenwoehr Community and Spouses’ Clubs 11 Feb: 10 a.m. at Bldg. 134. Categories are ages: 0-12 mos (Baby), 13 mos -3 yrs (Tiny), 4 yrs-6 yrs (Little), 7-9 years (Jr.). There will be two winners in every age group; a boy and a girl. AAFES Fuel Cards in Germany unaffected by Italy Stoppage Effective with January 2012, ESSO fuel cards are no longer valid in Italy. There is no effect on ESSO fuel cards in Germany; they will continue to be honored by off-base ESSO stations throughout Germany.

Educational Scholarships Available The Vilseck Community and Spouses Club (VCSC) wants to help you go to college. Scholarships are available for graduating high school seniors, spouses/dependents of active duty military and DOD civilians. The application deadline is March 16. CYSS, FCC news Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS) Family Child Care (FCC) has an amnesty program available during the month of January that allows unauthorized providers to register without command reprisal. Unauthorized child care provided in government quarters can lead to the revocation of housing privileges. Unauthorized providers are those who care for children in their homes for more than 10 hours a week without proper training and certification through CYSS. If you enjoy caring for children, and want to provide care for more than 10 hours a week, consider becoming a certified FCC provider. USAG Grafenwoehr CYSS assists Soldiers and their spouses with obtaining and maintaining quality child care. CYSS through the FCC program offers parents a choice of certified providers, ensuring their children are in a safe home
environment. However, care provided on the installation that is not approved by the garrison commander puts the command in liability. The objective of the FCC program is to provide quality care and reduce the potential for the incidence of accidents and child abuse. Help us provide positive role modeling and quality care for military Family Members. Give a child a home away from home and become a Family Child Care provider. Overseas Service Photography Project Announced The Department of Defense announced today that it seeks donations of photographs of U.S. military service life overseas from current and former service members for use in a photo recognition exhibition planned in conjunction with the State Department. The project called “Serving Abroad…Through Their Eyes” will choose images that depict six specific categories: daily life, friendship, places, faces, loss or triumph. Selected images may be used for display in a special photography exhibition planned for the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Pentagon and other prominent venues, stateside and overseas. The WIC Overseas Program provides you and your family with several important benefits: nutritious food, tips on how to prepare balanced meals, nutrition and health screenings, and access to other resources that help you and your family lead healthier lives. The program is available to eligible participants living overseas, including: civilian employees, DoD contractors, family members, and members of the uniformed services. Seeking Emergency Placement Care Providers The children in the USAGG need you. The Emergency Placement Care (EPC) Program trains individuals to become 24 hour providers for at risk children. The community is in need of more providers as the number of children in imminent danger increased due to the deployment rotation of family members. CYSS Edge! Presents: Skiing & Snowboarding CYS Services The Edge! and Outdoor Recreation will be teaming up this winter to offer youth in middle and high school an opportunity to try out skiing and snowboarding. We will run trips to the Mehlmeisel ski slope on Thursdays in Jan. th th rd (12 ) and Feb. (9 & 23 ) for youth in grades 6-8. Rental gear is available through the Rose Barracks ODR, youth must be fitted no later than three business days prior to their first trip. Basic instruction is provided. We will also run an overnight trip for youth in grades 8-12 on school out days. We’ll depart after school on Thursday, Jan. 26, for Garmisch. Upon arrival we will go night sledding before crashing at Keane’s Lodge. We will ski and snowboard the Classic Valley on Friday, Jan. 27, before returning late that night. Dental Assistant Training The Grafenwoehr Dental Clinic and the American Red Cross are offering a Dental Assistant Training Program beginning in Feb. 2012. The program is designed for those without dental assisting experience and requires 62 hours of in-class coursework and 300 hours of chair-side training. Considered by many to be the "most beautiful wedding fair in Franconia", it offers the latest dresses, outfits and accessories from over 55 vendors. Throughout the day, you can watch catwalk shows, performances, take part in raffles and purchase numerous articles on sale. Fasching: Gardetreffen 15 Jan: 2 - 9 p.m., in 92334 Berching at the Europahalle, Schlesierstraße (ca. 42 km / 26 miles west of Hohenfels). 10 different Fasching clubs will perform their award-winning dances and routines. Among them are World, Europa, German and Bavarian champions. Admission is 4.50 Euros pp.
Grüne Woche / Green Week 20 - 29 Jan: in 14055 Berlin, Messegelände, Messedamm 22 Open daily 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tickets (EN) cost 12.- Euros pp, special fares available (see link). The International Green Week (IGW, link in EN) is a one-of-a-kind international exhibition for the food, agricultural, and horticultural industries. Established in 1926, it will take place for the 76th time in 2011. Exhibitors often organize around national, regional, or product themes. Presentations feature fresh produce, fish, meats, and dairy products. These combine with a vast selection of international wine, beer, and spirits specialties, to satisfy every culinary palate. Right in line with consumer trends, the IGW also includes direct agricultural sales and the BIO MARKT organic products section. The IGW also features commercial and non-commercial agricultural, forestry, and landscaping exhibits (only GE). Changing annual themes typically include such topics as renewable resources or scientific livestock breeding and production. Due to the volume of traffic and limited parking spaces, it is strongly recommended you use the excellent public transport system (EN) for your travel to and in Berlin.
Dog Agility Tournament 21 - 22 Jan: at the Gut Matheshof / Ostbayernhalle in Kreuth 2, part of 92286 Rieden; ph 09624-9190 (ca. 25 km / 16 miles NW of Hohenfels). In the Agility Tournament (only GE, see "Seite 2" for a video clip), dogs need to master a fun parcours together with their owners. Watch and see who will be more exhausted, the dog or the owner.
“Pfeifer-Jahrtag” (Fasching Party) 23 Jan: in Töging, town center (part of 92345 Dietfurt, ca. 35 km / 22 miles SW of Hohenfels). This day is one of the most important days of the Fasching season in Töging - especially for the kids -, and dates back to 1722 when a new "fraternity" was founded. After a church service in the morning, people celebrate Fasching out on the streets. Here, the "Schecken" come into action: wild gestalts with wooden masks, rough clothes, and scourges roam the streets. They chase after the village kids who run away screaming, and smear their faces with soot when they catch them. Only the sound of the church bells will put a stop to this fun, but the party continues in the locales until the early morning hours.
Street Market: Lichtmess-Markt 27 Jan. - 02 Feb: 8 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., in 91054 Erlangen on Schlossplatz. A typical street market with all kinds of kitchenwares, clothes and brics-a-brac Did you know that the dates for the street markets in Protestant Erlangen were initially chosen based on Catholic holidays honoring the Virgin Mary (Candlemas / Assumption of Mary)? In the surrounding Catholic provinces, all shops (or markets) were closed and farming activities other than milking cows or similar unavoidable things were also forbidden. So the Catholic farmers had a lot of free time on their hands to go shopping, for example. Therefore the smart Erlangen citizens held their markets on those holidays they were not celebrating, thus attracting a much larger crowd and increasing business! Nowadays, the Catholic holidays and the market days don't necessarily match anymore. Reduced opening hours on Sun, 29 Jan.: only from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

You buy ONE ticket and have access to all participating pubs. In Rothenburg, you can buy your tickets either at the respective pubs (either in advance or on the day of the festival), or at the Tourist Info, ph 09861-404-800. Tickets cost 10.- Euros per person. Art Exhibition: Picasso's Works On exhibit until 19 Feb: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., in 93047 Regensburg,at the Leerer Beutel, Bertoldstraße 9. The selected lithographies and etchings from the 40 years of his work and show the topics and motifs that Picasso has repeatedly interpreted: antique mythology; the artist and his model; the bull and the women. All works on display are from the Arts Museum Pablo Picasso in Münster.
Country Music Fair 3 - 5 Feb: in 10243 Berlin, at the Postbahnhof (part of the Ostbahnhof = Train Station East), on Strasse der Pariser Kommune 8. Three days of Country Music Madness! The performers have not been announced online yet but you will find them listed here - in English! Of course you will also be able to buy all the clothes and accessories you need at the fair. Click here for some photos from previous events (in EN). They even provide a list of near-by hotels (in EN) but of course you're not obliged to use them, you can find your own. But if Berlin is too far away for you, maybe you want to wait for the one in Nürnberg. The dates haven't been released yet but it will probably take place in October.
