Join us at our Monthly Community Huddle Wednesday 25 Aug: The Community Huddle is a monthly meeting for all community members to find out the latest info on programs, events, construction updates, and other important issues. Hosted by Col. Vann Smiley, USAG Grafenwoehr commander, the Community Huddle will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Tower View Restaurant, Main Post, Bldg. 209. Garrison directors and subject matter experts will brief topics and answer questions.
Frankfurt Gateway Receptions Center Airport Bus Did you know that there is a FREE bus that leaves for the Frankfurt Airport from Rose Barracks? At 5 a.m., Mon-Fri (except federal holidays), a bus departs the Kristall Inn, Bldg. 275, Rose Barracks. (Please arrive at least 15 minutes early). The estimated arrival time to the Frankfurt International Airport is 11 a.m. The bus is open to all personnel with an ID card and passport. Family members without an ID card may also use the service, but they must be accompanied to and from the airport by an ID card holder and will travel on a space available basis. The return bus (on a space available basis) travels from the Sheraton Hotel in Frankfurt to Rose Barracks daily between 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. Incoming Soldiers have first priority. Army Lodging Grafenwoehr- Hotel Grand Opening 19 Sept: 2 p.m. The USAG Grafenwoehr Army Lodging proudly announces the Grand Opening of the new Army Lodging Hotel. Be our guest – explore the new hotel offering a total of 136 guest rooms: 72 Standard Guest rooms, 48 Family Suites and 18 Guest rooms for Extended Stay. Room sizes vary from approximately 28 square meters to 42 square meters divided up on 3 floors.
Hispanic Heritage Month celebration 24 Sept: Grafenwoehr Military Community celebration of the 2011 Hispanic Heritage Month culminates with a commemorative observance: La Fiesta! The festivities will take place at the Main Post Field House, Bldg 547, 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. There will be a variety of cultural educational aspects from static displays and performances to delicious ethnic food samples. This is a free event, open to the public. Come out and experience the culture.

Postal Advisory: Prohibited Matters and Restrictions Spent ammunitions, shells or similar war trophies are strictly prohibited from being mailed from any APO/FPO Military Post Office ZIP Code. This change is necessary to prevent false positive hits during inspections by airport, airline, and U.S Custom Service personnel. This prohibition also applies to replicas of these items even when modified to be inert. For example shell casing/bullet belt buckles, hand grenade paperweights, pistols and handguns mounted on plaques, etc. Rationale: Replica or expended items even when modified to be inert still show up as dangerous, illegal, and hazardous materials when x-rayed and still present the potential to shut down, disrupt, or jeopardize mail passing through military, civilian, and international mail systems. Please be aware that all mail requiring flight will be pass through x-ray in Frankfurt and any prohibited items will be returned to sender with possible law enforcement / Customs involvement. Please contact your local Customs or Post Office for further details.

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Overseas Program The Department of Defense (DoD) offers the WIC Overseas Program to eligible participants living overseas. The WIC Overseas Program provides you and your family with several important benefits: nutritious food, tips on how to prepare balanced meals, nutrition and health screenings, and access to other resources that help you and your family lead healthier lives. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes 1 Oct: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., Rose Barracks Cavalry Chapel October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and your ACS Family Advocacy Program is hosting the first European annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event. The community is invited to cheer on 100 men in red high heels as well as walk 1 mile and participate in the activities to raise awareness about violence towards women. Men who register have the option to reserve a pair of red high heels ranging from men’s shoe size 9 to 14. Seeking Emergency Placement Care Providers The children in the USAGG need you. The Emergency Placement Care (EPC) Program trains individuals to become 24 hour providers for at risk children. The community is in need of more providers as the number of children in imminent danger increased due to the deployment rotation of family members. Childcare Co-op A child care co-op, sometime called childcare exchange, is an increasingly popular option for budget-conscious parents with a large circle of friends. In a co-op, parents take turns watching each other’s children. One parent might watch another parent’s child on, for instance, Mondays or two half-days, while another might watch the first parent’s children on a weekend evening or perhaps on Thursdays. In some groups, parents take turns watching everyone else’s children as a group, while in others they watch one family’s children at a time. UMUC has redesigned undergraduate programs to ensure they continue to be aligned with the most current industry trends. Additionally, all 3-credit undergraduate online courses will move to an 8-week format beginning with the fall semester. "Italian Summer" Now - 21 Aug: in 92339 Beilngries, city center / Hauptstraße = main road (ca. 45 km / 28 miles SW of Hohenfels). During the "Italian Summer", the whole city of Beilngries honours the Italian life style: for example with numerous concerts with classical and modern Italian music, and specialties from the Italian cuisine and wine cellars. On 20 August, the whole Altstadt = old city will celebrate the "Grande Finale‖ with music, dance and theater performances.
Line Dance Weekend 19 - 21 Aug: at the Pullman City Fun Park in 94535 Eging am See, Ruberting 30. Special guest Joachim Armbruster, who won numerous international line dance championships (even in the USA), will be performing and teaching throughout this weekend. Rose Garden Serenades 26 - 28 Aug: estimated start time, 7 p.m., in 96049 Bamberg, in the rose garden at the Neue Residenz (palace) on Domplatz. During summer, the romantic rose garden at the Residence palace presents the perfect backdrop for beautiful classical music.
Hops and Beer Fest: Hopfenzupf-Markt 27 Aug: 11 a.m. - 10 p.m., in 87657 Goerisried, Kirchplatz (ca. 85 km / 55 miles NW of Garmisch-Partenkirchen). This is a great little fest, celebrating the lives and work of the hops pickers - hops are a vital ingredient in beer. Of course there will be beer and delicious food a-plenty. Bavarian music can be heard, and booths will be set up all around the Kirchplatz. Highlight will be the eagerly awaited "hops picking contest." Read about the program here, (link only in GE). 11 a.m: Booths will open; you can have a Bavarian breakfast with Weisswurst and Brezen. Weisswurst are a special type of white sausages, made with veal and parsley, and served with sweet mustard. midday: Official grand opening of the fest with tapping of the first keg. midday - 2 p.m.: Live Bavarian music with the "Musikkapelle Goerisried." 2 p.m: Hopfenzupf-Wettbewerb = hops picking contest. 3 p.m: Bavarian dances with the "Trachtenverein Goerisried." 4 p.m: Performance by the "Line Dance Club Allgaeu." 5 p.m: Live Bavarian music with the "Schwarzenberger Musikkapelle."
Guided Tour in English: The City Hall of Schweinfurt 30 Aug: 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., in 97421 Schweinfurt, at the entrance to the "Rathaus" = city hall on Marktplatz. The ―Rathaus‖ of Schweinfurt is not only the city’s most remarkable landmark, it is also regarded as one of the most significant profane Renaissance buildings in southern Germany. Discover fascinating details of its architecture on the inside and outside, and get a breathtaking view of the city and its surrounding scenery from the roof-deck of the ―new‖ city hall. Reichsstadt-Festtage (Celebrations of Becoming a Free City) 2 – 4 Sept: in 91541 Rothenburg, Marktplatz During the "Reichsstadt-Festtage", the complete city history is re-enacted by around 1,000 participants. Of course you need to park outside the city walls (recommended car parks: P1, P3, P5) and walk the very short distance to the city center. On Friday evening, a large torchlight parade takes place at the market square. Later on, fascinating fireworks will be displayed at the historic Rathaus (city hall). Program Friday: - 8:30 p.m.: Torchlight Parade. The participants march in their historic costumes from the meeting point at the Doppelbrücke (double bridge) to the Marktplatz (market square) where they are introduced to the nightwatchman and greeted by the Lord Mayor. This is followed by the fireworks spectacle. Saturday: - from 11 a.m. on: Medieval arts and crafts market with a knights camp, knights, music, a horse show, and a children's program with a story teller and even a trial at archery. All activities in front of the Rödertor gate are free of charge. - 1 p.m.: Re-enactment (market square) of Rothenburg being given Free City rights. Trachtenmarkt (Market for Traditional Bavarian Clothing) 3 – 4 Sept: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., in 91171 Greding, Marktplatz (ca. 55 km / 34 miles west of Hohenfels). The Trachtenmarkt is held in all weather conditions. Admission: 1.50 Euros pp, Kids under 18 are free. This market will sell anything you need for a Tracht: from the complete outfit to the fabrics and patterns (for all tailors out there), accessories, books (in German), and the all-important advice. It's also become a popular tradition to play music at the market.
Medieval Market 4 Sept: 10 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., in 97342 Seinsheim, Altstadt = old city (ca. 16 km / 10 miles south of Kitzingen). A wonderful medieval market with market tenders, jugglers, jostlers, craftsmen, artisans, exhibits, dancing and music. Great day out for all families.
Family Day 4 Sept: at the Fränkische-Schweiz-Museum in Tüchersfeld, Am Museum 5 (falls under 91278 Pottenstein, in the beautiful Fränkische Schweiz). It's a day designed for the whole family to have fun.
Potato Harvest: "Erpflgrobn" (Erdaepfel graben) 4 Sept: At the Oberpfälzer Freilandmuseum (open-air museum) in Neusath 200 (part of 92507 Nabburg, ca. 31 km / 19 miles south of Weiden). Admission (only GE) is 4.50 Euros pp, a family ticket for the day is 11.- Euros. Beautiful, strong cold-blood horses pull the potatoes out of the soil with old farming equipment - and you and your kids can help pick them up! After the harvest, every helper gets to taste a freshly boiled potato, or you go to the "Wirtshaus" (inn) where they have special potato dishes that day. A guided tour (in German) with lots of information takes place at 2 p.m. Children can also play some fun old games at 1 p.m., or try out how potato prints are made. Free parking spaces are available outside the museum's gates. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a short leash. Please bring along a bag for your dog's remains, or purchase a bag for 50 cents upon entry.

International Street Music Festival 10 - 11 Sept: in 97070 Wuerzburg, Innenstadt (inner city) / Marktplatz (market place) Over 300 artists from all over the world bring their music and their culture to Würzburg. Bicycle Race "Around Nuremberg's Historic City Center" 11 Sept: Route (Tor = gate): Hauptmarkt, Tiergärtnertor, Vestnertor, Maxtor and Laufer Schlagturm (tower). Every year in September, hundreds of professional cyclists compete (only GE) in a race around the Nürnberger castle, followed by over 100,000 spectators. In the morning, everyone can have a try at this competition in the "Jedermann-Rennen". Entertainment for the spectators is provided along the Nürnberger Stadtmauer (city wall). Please be aware of possible traffic disruptions and diversions.
