AFN Europe Moving to New Satellite Now – 31 July: AFN‘s satellite delivery platform is changing, requiring viewers who have an AFN decoder and satellite dish in their home to make some changes to continue to get AFN TV. Since the process of setting up a dish and re-adjusting a decoder varies according to decoder model, location and other variables, the help desk and on-line materials are especially critical. AFN Europe has posted manuals and how-to-videos in English, German and Italian at www.afneurope.net. Click on the Eurobird 9A icon for the manuals and videos. For additional assistance, the AFN Help Desk is open Tuesday-Friday from 1 - 9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. -8 p.m. (Central European Time). Viewers from Germany, Italy, Belgium, the UK and most other European countries will be able to call in via a toll-free number, 00800-2362683662 (00800-afnantenna). Direct-to-home viewers will need to reconfigure their home decoder and realign their satellite dish from the current satellite Hotbird 6/9 at 13 degrees East, to the new satellite, Eurobird 9A (EB9A) at 9 degrees East. AFN apologizes for the inconvenience, but assures the move to the EB9A satellite positions will better serve the AFN audience in the future.

Pilgrimage: St. Jodok-Ritt 24 July: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., in 92723 Taennesberg In 1796, a horrible cattle epidemic haunted the small village of Tännesberg, 200 cattle died within a very short period of time. In their despair, the villagers and farmers undertook a pilgrimage to the Jodok church. Saint Josse (St. Jodok in German) is the saint against plagues and epidemics and has often before helped farmers. The first farmer whose cattle survived donated a still-existing ―Marterl‖ (wayside cross) for the road that leads to the church. And out of sincere gratitude, the farmers vowed to repeat this pilgrimage annually. Initially, they even planned to take their whole livestock onto the trip but that didn‘t work out, of course. But in their typical Upper Palatinate style, they followed the festive parade and church service with a small fest. The farmers kept their promise and the pilgrimage was repeated every year until 1866 when it suddenly was forbidden, for unknown reasons. It is assumed, though, that the farmers continued their annual tradition in secret. It wasn‘t until 1950 that the pilgrimage was officially rejuvenated and has since become a popular fest. You can find the history in German also on their Homepage (select "Attraktionen" on the left-hand menu, and "JodokRitt"). The festive horse parade takes place on Sunday.
