Postal Advisory: Prohibited Matters and Restrictions Spent ammunitions, shells or similar war trophies are strictly prohibited from being mailed from any APO/FPO Military Post Office ZIP Code. This change is necessary to prevent false positive hits during inspections by airport, airline, and U.S Custom Service personnel. This prohibition also applies to replicas of these items even when modified to be inert. For example shell casing/bullet belt buckles, hand grenade paperweights, pistols and handguns mounted on plaques, etc. Rationale: Replica or expended items even when modified to be inert still show up as dangerous, illegal, and hazardous materials when x-rayed and still present the potential to shut down, disrupt, or jeopardize mail passing through military, civilian, and international mail systems. Please be aware that all mail requiring flight will be pass through x-ray in Frankfurt and any prohibited items will be returned to sender with possible law enforcement / Customs involvement. Please contact your local Customs or Post Office for further details.

Childcare Co-op A child care co-op, sometime called childcare exchange, is an increasingly popular option for budget-conscious parents with a large circle of friends. In a co-op, parents take turns watching each other’s children. One parent might watch another parent’s child on, for instance, Mondays or two half-days, while another might watch the first parent’s children on a weekend evening or perhaps on Thursdays. In some groups, parents take turns watching everyone else’s children as a group, while in others they watch one family’s children at a time. This keeps the cost of child care down and keeps kids in the hands of caregivers parents trust. Interested? Contact Parent Central Services today at DSN 475-6656 or DSN 4762760. Brochure available at www.grafenwoehrmwr.com/cyss/cyss.html.

The language barrier – good to know items Germans ordering you around? Have you ever had a German tell you something like: "you will come here" or "you must sign there?" It sounds horribly impolite in English, like they're ordering you around, but trust me, they are not. The whole problem stems from English and German being two completely different languages (and cultures), and the speaker's English not being their first language. The English "must" and the German "müssen" sound very much alike and even mean something similar - just not quite the same. In English, "must" indicates a mandatory requirement or order ("you must do this, or else …") In German, "Du musst" (you see how similar they are!) simply means "you have to" or "you need to." A German who speaks English well will know the difference but not all of us can be language whizzes. It's a similar story with a statement like "you will come here." Most likely, our German friends are trying to ask you politely to come with them, they just don't know how to translate it correctly. Next time you encounter such seeming impoliteness - don't take it personal, especially if you notice that the German's English isn't the best. If you know the person, you might even consider explaining to them the difference between the German "musst" and the English "must." If you still find Germans peculiar, maybe the explanations on this site can help a bit (website in English). For ―I want to know how to …‖ in Germany: See what others suggest, especially if you want to win a German's favor. (Both links in English). If you want to learn more about the language, you could follow Hyde Flippo on Twitter (in EN). Some funny traditions are explained here in English (scroll towards the bottom). If you already speak German and want to know more about those strange Bavarian customs, click here. Or you try this site for customs from all over Germany (with a translation button). If you can read German: find out what the weather predictions are according to the Hundertjähriger Kalender (calendar said to be valid for a hundred years!) For language buffs: click here for examples of Germanic dialects, many with good quality audio recordings. If you're having trouble addressing Germans correctly, try these suggestions (website in English).
