4 January 2011 History lesson: Epiphany - Three Kings Have you noticed any children walking around your town, dressed up as the Three Wise Men? Here is a bit of history on it: For centuries church calendars in the East and the West have agreed that there are twelve days of Christmas and they begin on Christmas Day and end on Jan. 6.
Have a safe and …
The twelve days of Christmas end with the Feast of Epiphany, also called "The Adoration of the Magi" or "The Manifestation of God." Celebrated, it is known as the day of the Three Kings (or wise men / magi): Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. According to an old legend based on a Bible story, these three kings saw, on the night when Christ was born, a bright star, followed it to Bethlehem and found there the Christ child and presented it with gold, frankincense and myrrh. Jan. 6, the last day of Christmas, comes with its own traditions, rituals and symbols. Carolers go from house to house and in many homes the Christmas tree is taken down and in some areas is burnt in a big bonfire. For the children, this is an especially joyous occasion because associated with taking down the tree goes the "plündern" (raiding) of the tree. The sweets, chocolate ornaments wrapped in foil or cookies (which have replaced the sugarplums) are the raiders' rewards. The history of Christmas (the festival of the nativity of Jesus Christ,) is intertwined with that of the Epiphany. The commemoration of the Baptism, also called the Day of Lights, i.e. the Illumination of Jesus, was also known as the birthday of Jesus, because he was believed to have been born then of the Virgin or reborn in baptism. In some records, Christmas and Epiphany were referred to as the first and second nativity; the second being Christ's manifestation to the world. In the fourth century, Dec. 25 was finally adopted by the Western Christian church as the date of the Feast of Christ's birth. It is believed that this change in date gave rise to the tradition of the "12 Days of Christmas." While the Western Christian church celebrates Dec. 25, the Eastern Christian church to this day recognizes Jan. 6 as the celebration of the nativity. Jan. 6 was also kept as the physical birthday in Bethlehem. In the Teutonic west, Epiphany became the Festival of the Three Kings (i.e. the Magi), or simply Twelfth day. On the evening before Three Kings, traditionally there were prayers, blessed dried herbs would be burnt and their aromatic smell would fill the house. Doorways would be sprinkled with holy water and the master of the house would write with chalk C + M + B and the year above the house and barn door and say: "Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar, behütet uns auch für dieses Jahr, vor Feuer und vor Wassergefahr." ("CMB, protect us again this year from the dangers of fire and water.") C + M + B has traditionally been translated with Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, however, according to the church it stands for "Christus Mansionem Benedictat" (Christ bless this home). The custom of the Star Singers, reminiscent of the travel of the Three Kings is still very much alive in Bavaria and Austria. Beginning with New Year's Day and through Jan. 6, children dressed as the kings and holding up a large star, go from door to door, caroling and singing a Three Kings' song. For this they receive money or sweets. In the past, the collected donations went to unemployed craftsmen and veterans; today they go to charities of the church or the Third World. The Roman-Catholic Church also celebrates "Donationsfor-Africa Day" today:For over 100 years now, the Roman Catholic church collects special donations for Africa on 06 January. It was initiated by Pope Leo XIII on Jan. 6, 1891, who used the donations to support the fight against slavery in Africa. The day was chosen to honor one of the Three Wise Men, or Magi, who represents Africa in the Catholic religion. Although there is no clear explanation on whom the African King is - all three have been associated with an African ancestry. As a matter of fact, the belief of them representing the continents known at the time (Europe, Asia and Africa) only developed later on in time. It was in the 12th century when people started to believe that they were kings from those continents. If you can read German, there are far more details on the German Wikipedia page.

Become a Family Child Care Provider It's a New Year and a new beginning! Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS) Family Child Care (FCC) has an amnesty program available during the month of January that allows unauthorized providers to register without command reprisal. Unauthorized child care provided in government quarters can lead to the revocation of housing privileges. Unauthorized providers are those who care for children in their homes for more than 10 hours a week without proper training and certification through CYSS. If you enjoy caring for children, and want to provide care for more than 10 hours a week, consider becoming a certified FCC provider. USAG Grafenwoehr CYSS assists Soldiers and their spouses with obtaining and maintaining quality child care. CYSS through the FCC program offers parents a choice of certified providers, ensuring their children are in a safe home environment. However, care provided on the installation that is not approved by the garrison commander puts the command in liability. The objective of the FCC program is to provide quality care and reduce the potential for the incidence of accidents and child abuse. Help us provide positive role modeling and quality care for military Family Members. Give a child a home away from home and become a Family Child Care provider. Contact the Family Child Care office at DSN 476-2783 or CIV 09662-83-2783 for more information.

Submissions accepted as of Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2011, through Presidents Day, Feb 20, 2012. Rules, entry form and submission guidelines may be found here. For more, email Lt. Col. Robert Ditchey.

American Red Cross American Red Cross Gives Military Families Easier Access to Emergency Communication Services As part of an ongoing effort to better serve the military community, the American Red Cross has moved to a single telephone number for its emergency communication services. Now a call to 877-272-7337, while either stateside or overseas, allows Red Cross emergency communications services to put military personnel in touch with their families following the death or serious illness of an immediate family member, the birth of a service member's child or grandchild or when a family faces other emergencies. For those stationed overseas, the three options for calling will remain the same: calling 877-272-7337 direct, accessing the number through a military operator, or calling the local Red Cross station. For more, visit www.redcross.org.
