Arts & Crafts, Month of the Military Child contest The Heart and Home Craft Shop is sponsoring a craft-themed contest for children 6 to 18. The theme is “Proud to be a Military Child.” All through the month of April our sales team will be offering classes for children including canvas, beading, looming, tye-dying, stain glass and more. Any of the items made in these classes can be submitted for the contest. We will also be accepting things made at home. The rules for the contest are as follows: 1) Each item must be handmade. 2) The project must coordinate with the theme. 3) Any work is accepted, quilting, drawing, painting, knitting, etc. 4) All entries must be in by 5 p.m. on April 22. 5) Each submission must have an entry form which can be picked up at the Craft Shop. The Asymmetric Warfare Group (AWG) Recruiting Team 6 - 7 April: 10:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m., at the Education Center, Main Post Bldg. 538, Room 4. The AWG is seeking senior NCOs and Officers for our Operational Advisor Teams with unique skills and possessing the following attributes to include operational/combat experience, capable of independent and small team operations, ability to assess complex situations and develop innovative solutions, excellent communication skills and desire to effect change to the Army’s culture. Operational Advisors (ASI U9) positions are available to active duty NCOs (SFC – SGM) and officers (MAJ –LTC). Our Operational Advisors are the center piece of the AWG. Staffed by seasoned war fighters and functional experts, these advisors become the “Center of Excellence” for innovative thinking and developing new tactics and countermeasures to defeat asymmetric threats. Operational Support and Staff (ASI U8) positions are available to active duty NCOs (SGT – SFC) and officers (CPT - LTC). Although our Operational Advisors represent the center of AWG, they cannot accomplish their mission without the hand-picked experts of our Operational Support and Staff personnel. GSCS Scholarship Opportunities Deadline 15 April: Proceeds from the Grafenwoehr Thrift Shop and monies raised at events enable GCSC to give back to our community. Annual Overseas Housing Allowance Utilities Expense Survey Extended until 15 April: This is intended for all military personnel who reside off-post in privately leased or rental housing under the OHA program and in-country (Germany) for six or more months. Homeowners should not take this survey as historically their expense data is different from renters upon which this program is based. The survey is currently available here. For more Randall D. Extended hours, Rose Barracks Shoppette Beginning 15 April: The Rose Barracks Shoppette will extend hours of operations in support of the 2SCR redeployment. New hours: Mon. – Thurs., 5:30 a.m. – 11 p.m., Fri.-Sat., 5:30 a.m. – 1 a.m. and Sunday, 8 a.m. – 10 pm.

Safety Art Poster/Video contest Submissions due April 25: Submissions must be delivered to the Safety Office, Main Post Bldg 539, Room 234. Only one submission per family permitted. Winning submissions will be posted on the USAG-Grafenwoehr website. ALL Submissions must include your name, daytime telephone number and e-mail address. Winners will be selected by a panel of three outside agency volunteers. Contest is limited to those personnel authorized SOFA status or individual logistical support. Winners will be awarded in 3 categories: Best Hand Drawn Safety Picture, age: 2-9, prize $25 AAFES Gift Card; Best Hand Drawn Safety Picture, age 10 and up, prize $30 AAFES Gift Card and Best Homemade Safety Video, all ages, prize $40 AAFES Gift Card. Join us at our Monthly Community Huddle Thursday, 28 April: The Community Huddle is a monthly meeting for all community members to find out the latest info on programs, events, construction updates, and other important issues. Hosted by Col. Vann Smiley, USAG Grafenwoehr commander, the Community Huddle will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rose Barracks Bldg. 134. Garrison directors and subject matter experts will brief topics and answer questions.

Report of Birth & Tourist Passport applications 28 April: The Grafenwoehr Passport Office, in conjunction with the U.S. Consulate in Frankfurt, will be accepting Report of Birth & Tourist Passport applications, on this date from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m., at Rose Barracks, Bldg. 134, Multi-Purpose Building. Representatives from DHS, USCIS, immigrant visas, social security administration and veterans’ benefits will also be available. USAG Grafenwoehr Spring Cleanup 9 – 13 May: Main Post Grafenwoehr and Rose Barracks military community members, to include off-post housing areas, will participate in the 2011 Spring Clean Up to improve the appearance of our community facilities, clean our areas of responsibility, and prepare for the upcoming summer. Spring Cleanup is Everyone’s Responsibility: All Soldiers, Civilians and Family Members will participate. This applies whether you live in government or governmentleased quarters, as well as at the work place. Areas of concentrated emphasis are homes, work places, and designated common areas Please help make this the best place to live and serve in Germany by sorting your trash and keeping our area neat and clean. 9 – 11 May: Housing areas and Soldiers’ quarters. Maximum participation of housing occupants is necessary to successfully execute this program. Soldiers will report to their Area/Building Coordinators to receive specific instructions for clean up. Sponsoring Units will also participate in their respective areas. Focus will be on the entire building (basements, washrooms, storage rooms, etc.) and a 50 foot perimeter around the buildings and the common areas. End state is a complete cleaning of housing buildings, common areas, and grounds. 12 - 13 May: This is time for units, support agencies, and commercial establishments to clean their areas of responsibility. All agencies occupying facilities are required to participate in cleanup efforts. The Rose Barracks recycling center to be open 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. during this time. The Self Help Store will have tools and equipment available. Special materials required should be obtained from Self Help Store NLT 1-week prior to the Spring Cleanup (paint, topsoil, beauty bark, etc). Units will be able to pick up any required equipment NLT April 18. All checked out equipment must be returned to Self Help Store NLT 1 week after scheduled cleanup.


Bulk Trash Pickup for the On-Post Housing, will take place on May 10 in Grafenwoehr and May 11 on Rose Barracks. Place items curbside, at designated locations (signs will be posted). Items to be picked up are as follows: Furniture, mattresses, carpets, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, large TVs, ovens, stoves, bicycles, etc., and other items that cannot be dismantled, torn or broken down to a size that would fit. Refrigerators and freezers must be handled and placed with care so that the cooling coils will not get damaged. No material should be set out before May 6 or after 7 a.m. on Friday, May 13. Pick-ups will be performed in three steps, please stack separated: 1. All metal items /like washers, dryers, bicycles, etc. 2. All other material /like mattresses, carpets, furniture, etc. 3. All leaves, green waste should be placed in Baskets/Containers or placed in clear trash bags so that the worker know it’s leaves and not refuse. Items that would fit in a normal car’s trunk, like microwaves, vacuum cleaners, computer- and stereo components, small TVs, etc. should be brought to the Grafenwoehr Landfill individually by the owner. The Recycling Center is located on Wilbur Road on Rose Barracks. Many items will not be collected including: Normal refuse and recyclable material (cardboard, paper, cans, glass, plastics, etc.) => individual bins – excess please take to Community Recycling Center! Hazardous waste like batteries, oil, antifreeze, paint, cleaners, solvents, etc. => DPW Self Help Store (Bldg.394) Wrecked cars, car parts, motorcycles, engine parts, etc. => Take to separate container at Auto Craft Shop! Provides military units, organizations and agencies the opportunity to turn-in unwanted, excess or expired hazardous material in unopened containers in support of Garrison Spring Clean-Up activities. West Virginia to hold special election for Governor 14 May: West Virginia will hold a special primary election for Governor to fulfill the unexpired term, through January 13, 2013. The vacancy was created when former Governor Joe Manchin won election to the United States Senate. This is a statewide primary election, however only the Democratic and Republican parties have chosen a primary as their method of candidate selection. The Mountain Party has chosen to hold a convention to select a candidate. For more, email.

Army Emergency Relief program Runs through 15 May: AER provides emergency financial assistance in the form of no-interest loans or grants to Soldiers, as well as tuition assistance for family members. Funding for the program comes from voluntary donations by Soldiers and civilians, plus investments made by AER. For more, visit the AER website, call DSN: 475-8432 or email.

Pet Fair, Fashion Show at the Rose Barracks Dog Park 21 May: 11a.m. Strap on those leashes —- get your pet out of the house for an ultimate Doggie Fashion Show. Contest Entry is free with donation of pet food. Four contests for all doggie sizes and doggie shapes including *Most Unique Dog, *Most Unique Trick, *Most Creative Costume and *Best of Show. Additionally, USAG Grafenwoehr Veterinarian Clinic will be on site for FREE pet registration, flea and tick products as well as info on spaying, neutering and micro-chipping and many other services.


New York special election 24 May: New York will hold a special election for the 26th Congressional District to fill the seat vacated by Representative Christopher J. Lee. The 26th Congressional District includes the following counties: Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming. Contact your unit voting officer to register and vote. Seeking Emergency Placement Care Providers The children in the USAGG need you. The Emergency Placement Care (EPC) Program trains individuals to become 24 hour providers for at risk children. The community is in need of more providers as the number of children in imminent danger increased due to the deployment rotation of family members. Facility & Road Closures /Construction/ Openings The Rose Barracks Car Care Center, renovations scheduled Current - 15 May: DPW is redoing the shop floor auto bays and resurfacing the Car Care Center road and service areas. Therefore, no service or repairs will be schedule. However, the Car Care Center will be open so that customer can purchase auto supplies and order tires and parts. The sales associate will help in finding alternative source for repairs, either at Main Post or recommendations of off post facilities.

Main Post Closure of Parking Area by Bldg. 140 Current – 10 June: The parking lot by Bldg 140 will be closed due to re-construction. Alternate parking areas are by the Bank/Credit Union/Post Office Bldgs.

Rose Barracks PSC Finance Section, closure of activity 11 April: The Finance Section of the Rose Barracks Postal Service Center (PSC) (former APO where you mail packages out) will be closed in order to lay a new floor in the customer lobby. There will be no mail leaving the community due to this closure. There will be incoming mail which will be processed and distributed as normal. The Mailroom (CMR) will run normal operating hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Official Mail Customer Windows will be open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Main Post PSC will be open normal hours of 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more, DSN 476-2581.

Main Post Closure of Childers Street 18 - 21 April: Portion of Childers Street, starting at the southern edge of Bldg 150 until Shiloh Ave intersection will be closed due to work associated with the parking lot by Bldg 140. Oncoming traffic from the post office can continue onto Shiloh Ave. Traffic from Gettysburg Ave onto Childers will continue left by the bank (between Bldg. 106 & 150). Detour signs will be posted.

Main Post Traffic Circle, current road and traffic revisions Now – end of April: Total closure of the north part of Wilbur Road between the Grafenwoehr Water Tower and the new traffic circle. Traffic from Gate 1 to reach the JMTC HQ, Bank and Community Mailroom area will be detoured via Argonne Ave and Gettysburg Ave. During this phase traffic through the construction site will be limited to: east to west or east to south. All other traffic will reroute via Saratoga Avenue. The one lane available on Gettysburg Ave. of the southern portion of the traffic circle will only allow traffic flow from east to west (USAG HQ – JMTC HQ, Mailroom ...) and south towards Burger King and to access Concord Road (Tower Theater). Traffic from the JMTC HQ, Bank Community Mail Room and Service Credit Union area will have to leave via Childers/York Road or Shiloh Ave.


Since it is not possible to allow oncoming traffic between Burger King and the Traffic circle the right lane of Wilbur Road will be blocked right after the access to/from Burger King. Additional road construction work on Fisher Street will block thru-traffic. Access to and from the Grafenwoehr Tax Office (Bldg. 216) will be via Argonne Ave. Directions for alternate pedestrian and vehicle traffic will be posted.

VES staff has spent a great deal of time analyzing assessment results of the past year to determine our new focus for instruction. The analysis led us to develop 2 new goals. Our school vision of ―Vilseck Expects Success‖ will remain the same. The new goals are: Goal 1: By 2016 all students will improve competency with numbers and operations as measured by increased performance on assessments. Goal 2: By 2016 all students will demonstrate improved reading comprehension through written and oral communication as measured by increased performance on assessments. The staff will investigate research based interventions and strategies to help us achieve these goals. As always, parents are encouraged to participate in our Continuous School Improvement process by attending our staff development days or joining one of our committees. It is your responsibility to save this planet…not only for yourselves and your children…but also for many generations to come. How can you be one of the ―Billion Acts of Green‖? What can you do to make a difference? What can others do to make a difference? How can one person help the earth? Share your thoughts about the earth by words or by picture. Write a poem. Draw a picture. Write a letter. Paint a picture. Write an essay. Entries may not be larger than 8 ½‖ x 11‖. It must be an original work. It may be hand illustrated, hand written, or typed. Child Find: Netzaberg Elementary School’s Preschool Services for Child Development (PSCD) program is conducting screenings to identify strengths and concerns in a young child’s development. The free Child Find developmental screenings are provided for command sponsored children from age three to five years. Professional staff will screen motor, language, problem solving, social, and self-help skills, plus the child’s vision and hearing. In addition, parents will have an opportunity to ask questions about their child’s development.
