Early Retirement Briefing 17 Nov: There will be a Voluntary Early Retirement Authority/Voluntary Separation Incentive Payment (VERA/VSIP) Briefing Thursday, 1:30pm in Main Post Bldg. 500 in the Steinbeck Conference Room. All US and Local National employees are welcome to attend.

Overseas Service Photography Project Announced The Department of Defense announced today that it seeks donations of photographs of U.S. military service life overseas from current and former service members for use in a photo recognition exhibition planned in conjunction with the State Department. The project called “Serving Abroad…Through Their Eyes” will choose images that depict six specific categories: daily life, friendship, places, faces, loss or triumph. Selected images may be used for display in a special photography exhibition planned for the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Pentagon and other prominent venues, stateside and overseas. Submissions will be accepted beginning Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2011, through Presidents Day, Feb 20, 2012. Gift Wrapping Table 25 Nov – 24 Dec: The American Red Cross is sponsoring gift wrapping tables at both the Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels Main PXs throughout this holiday shopping season. All donations directly benefit your community organizations in the Grafenwoehr, Vilseck and Hohenfels area. For more, contact your garrison Red Cross.

Soldier Show now accepting nomination The U.S. Army Entertainment Division is accepting nominations for the 2012 U.S. Army Soldier Show until Dec. 30. Nominations are being accepted for technicians, performers, lighting, audio, video, costuming and stage technicians. Selections for the U.S. Army Soldier Show will begin in January and are completed by February of each calendar year. Send nomination packets to: U.S. Army Soldier Show, Attn: 2012 Selection Committee, IMCOM G9, 2455 Reynolds Road, Bldg 2266, Fort Sam Houston, TX 78234-7588. All nomination packets must include the following: Name, rank, SSN, unit address, duty phone, e-mail address, and area(s) of specialty for performer (singer, dancer, etc.) or areas of specialty for technician (lighting, audio, carpentry, electrical work, etc.). 2011 Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas The 2011 CFC-Overseas program, the world’s largest charity campaign impacting the lives of military personnel and Family members, starts Oct. 4 and runs through Dec. 2. CFC, the only authorized solicitation of federal employees in their workplaces, raises millions of dollars annually and features more than 2,300 charities. During last year’s campaign, U.S. Army in Europe Soldiers and civilian employees contributed approximately $2.4 million, with more than $97,000 designated for the family support and youth programs. CFC-O offers contributors the opportunity to give using the traditional paper pledge card or through e-giving at www.cfcoverseas.org.

European Seminar 17 – 18 Nov: The Bavarian State Government sponsors the 30th annual European Seminar, near Bamberg, focusing on security issues of the transatlantic partnership. The Seminar is geared towards Field Grade Officers (but not limited to) and their civilian counterparts and spouses stationed in Bavaria. We only have 25 slots, space is limited and nominees will be selected on a first come first serve basis. The Bavarian Government provides room and board.

Customs pamphlet eases holiday mail rush Mailing packages stateside from Europe involves many prohibitions, restrictions and import duty rules. U.S. personnel can avoid the pitfalls by getting the "International Mail Imports" pamphlet from a military customs office. Banned products include canned meats, pâté, salami, sausage and soup mixes containing meat. It is also illegal to mail handguns, alcoholic beverages and a whole list of other items to the United States. Other articles may need special import permits. A customs declaration must be fixed to every parcel going to the States and falsifying it is a federal crime. The International Mail Imports pamphlet is available at any military customs office and online.

Community Retirement Ceremony 30 Nov: USAG Grafenwoehr will host a quarterly retirement ceremony at Grafenwoehr Field House (Main Post Bldg. 547), that will recognize the many years of service and sacrifice that our Soldiers and Civilians (U.S. and local nationals) have given to the United States Army and the Nation. Main Post Auto Skills Center on the move - Grand Reopening 9 Dec: Now it's time to celebrate! Join us for the Ribbon Cutting and Grand Reopening of the facility, Main Post Bldg. 528 at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Tour the renovated facility and see all the improvements made.

Breakfast with Santa 10 Dec: The War Eagle Foundation (WEF) is hosting a pancake breakfast with Santa from 8 - 11 a.m. at the Vilseck Elementary School Cafeteria. Feast on a delicious breakfast, take your picture with Santa (don't forget your camera!) and enjoy fun holiday activities. Educational Scholarships Available The Vilseck Community and Spouses Club (VCSC) wants to help you go to college. Scholarships are available for graduating high school seniors, spouses/dependents of active duty military and DOD civilians. The application deadline is March 16. Winter’s coming, prepare your vehicle Every year in October U.S. Forces in Germany participate in the International Motor Vehicle Lighting Equipment Campaign. German garages, Exchange Car Care Centers and most U.S. Forces Vehicle Inspection Stations will be conducting courtesy (cost free) inspections to check vehicle lighting systems to include headlights, taillights, fog lights and turn signals. In addition to the lighting inspection, AAFES Car Care Centers will also inspect windshield wipers, exhaust systems and tires. The International Motor Vehicle Lighting Equipment Campaign is part of the U.S. Army Europe and Germany Fight the Risk joint traffic safety campaign. For more, www.fight-the-risk.army.mil.

Meter Readings for off-post Army Family Housing Nov: Hausmeisters must perform a yearly meter reading in each leased house. While the hausmeister needs to gain access to your utility room, this will not require residents to stay home specifically to satisfy this requirement, however someone must allow the hausmeister access, and without approved access the hausmeister will not enter your home.


The hausmeister during his normal tour of duty throughout the neighborhoods will visit residences to gain authorized access to perform the readings. Video helps Soldiers prepare for centralized selection boards The Department of the Army Secretariat released a 10-minute instructional video to assist officers, warrant officers and noncommissioned officers with preparing for centralized selection boards.The video explains the overall selection board process and shows Soldiers where on the Army Human Resources Command website to find selection boards and their specific convening dates during the fiscal year. The video explains how to navigate the My Board File and prepare military records for those being considered for promotion. It also provides information about what board members look for during the board file review process.The instructional video can be viewed at http://goo.gl/gEy4v by logging-on with an Army Knowledge Online username and password.

Post pictures you take of places you’ve visited, or people you’ve met in Bavaria and you can win! Monthly winners will win a $25 Exchange Gift Card. The grand prize winner who takes the photo of the year will win a $100 gift card toward a new digital camera. Suicide prevention hotline now available in Europe Installation Management Command Europe officials announced toll-free European access to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and Veterans Crisis Line on Oct. 5. All active-duty military, civilians, family members and contractors can reach the Lifeline by dialing DSN 118 from any Army garrison DSN phone or commercially via a toll-free European number, 00800-1273-TALK (8255). The toll-free number can be dialed from fixed-line telephones and most cell phones in Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. The toll-free number may not be


reachable from all prepaid cell phones and some cell phone callers may incur charges. A live Internet-based chat service is also available at www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org. All calls are confidential and will be answered by trained crisis counselors. If you, or someone you know, is considering suicide -- Get Help! Seeking Emergency Placement Care Providers The children in the USAGG need you. The Emergency Placement Care (EPC) Program trains individuals to become 24 hour providers for at risk children. The community is in need of more providers as the number of children in imminent danger increased due to the deployment rotation of family members. The training you receive will last you a lifetime and help you build your experience and resume. Call ACS 476‑2650 or 09662‑83‑2650.

VFW seeks Christmas support for orphan program Members of VFW Post 9334 conduct a toy and clothing drive for the Orphans in the Czech Republic each year and are assisted by the Torch Club Dragons and the Keystone Tigers from the Netzaberg Youth Center. Persons who are interested in contributing to our Annual Christmas Program can sign for cards, purchase a present, and return it to the Netzaberg Youth Center or the Vilseck Commissary starting 1 November 11. Our youth clubs will wrap the present for you if it is not gift wrapped. Once the card and gift is returned you may keep the picture as a memoir. We support the Detsky Domov Orphanage and the Most Baby Clinic. There will be two collection points. Persons residing in the Vilseck Community may make donations at the Vilseck

GCSC NEWS Welfare grants Deadline 18 Nov: Last year the GCSC distributed more than $14,500 in welfare grants to organizations within our community. The evolution of the beaded flower is not th well documented, but seems to back to the 18 Century. The techniques were passed through families, each generation teaching the next. Wrestling referees needed 19 Nov: DoDDS high school wrestling starts in December, and the schools need trained, certified referees. Travel to all parts of Germany/Benelux countries, and get paid. Waldweihnacht = Christmas in the Forest 17 Dec: 5 p.m., in Sorghof (part of 92249 Vilseck).


This very special event starts at the "Dorfplatz" (yard next to the Sorghof church) in the center of Sorghof. Parking is available there. Warm your hands at the crackling fire while you listen to a brass band play. Then visitors and shepherds will walk 300 meters to the nearby forest in a torchlight procession, following the "Star of Bethlehem" which shows them the way. Here they will find a live "Weihnachtskrippe" (nativity scene), wooden booths with food and refreshments, and another big crackling bonfire. The live nativity scene is very unique because it's really "live", i.e. with real animals and a real baby in the manger. When the procession has arrived, the actors will perform a musical about the search of St. Joseph and St. Mary for shelter. It's a real pleasure to listen to these great voices. Christmas Songs in English language is also a contribution to all American guest. As the Waldweihnacht draws to a close after about one hour, Christmas sparklers will be passed out (or bring your own) to the kids and the whole scene will end in a "big sparkle"! At the wooden huts you will find various food and refreshments, such as "Glühwein" = mulled wine (comes in "strong" and "stronger"), "Kinderpunsch" (without alcohol), "Dotsch" (potato pancake), "Hirtengulasch" (Shepherd's goulash), and of course "Bratwurst". The Christmas market in Altötting's baroque main square - in its center the small Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of Grace) - is considered one of the most beautiful by many. There are daily performances at 5 and 7 p.m. on the stage, on Saturday and Sunday also at 2 p.m. The German Nikolaus visits the market every day at 5 p.m. Every church also has nativity scenes (Basilika St. Anna, the Stiftspfarrkirche, and St. Michael), and the Rathaus (city hall) contains one with figures in traditional Bavarian clothing. When you visit there, don't miss the stunningly beautiful pilgrimage church (in English, click on the Union Jack at top right to change language). At the Kapellplatz / Chapel Square alone you'll find FOUR different churches that you can visit.

Amberg 24 Nov. - 23 Dec: in 92224 Amberg on Marktplatz = market place. Highlights are daily live performances on the stage, a horse-drawn carriage and a live nativity scene, as well as a special program for the kids. Opening hours: Mon. - Sat. 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Sun. 1 - 8 p.m.

Andechs 2 - 04 Dec: 42 km / 26 miles SW of Munich. Midday - 8 p.m.: in 82346 Andechs, along Andechser Straße. Andechs is famous for its monastery (only GE) and the beer that the monks brew there. A visit to this Christmas market is a perfect opportunity to visit the monastery as well. But before you do, have a look around the lovely Christmas market and sample some of the typical Bavarian delicacies they offer there: homemade cookies and jams, red wine and Glühwein (mulled wine), "Kletzenbrot", chestnuts, honey and honey liqueur, smoked meat, "Schupfnudeln", Bratwürste and cheese raclette are among the scrumptious foods you can try.

Opening hours: Sat. 1 - 9 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. The mining museum is a wonderful surrounding for the traditional wooden huts of this arts and crafts Christmas market, where up to 70 artisans display and sell their goods. A varied program for the young and old will add to the lovely scene. This market is ends with the traditional festive parade of former miners, illuminated by torches and candles.


Parking: please follow the signs for "Maffei P+R", it'll lead you to the large car park of the Cherry factory, on Cherrystraße 1. A shuttle bus service will take all guests to the mining museum. Admission is only1 50 Euros pp which includes the fare for the shuttle.

Augsburg Augsburg is ca. 155 km / 95 miles north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. 21 Nov. -24 Dec: in 86150 Augsburg on Rathausplatz and in the whole Fußgängerzone = pedestrian zone, 155 km / 95 miles north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.This is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany, held right in front of the unique historical Rathaus (city hall) famous for its Golden Ceiling Hall. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m., you can watch the "Engelesspiel" where 24 "angels" appear and turn the Rathaus into a giant advent calendar. This market also features daily musical performances, and a special program for children (baking with kids, puppet theater) at the Children's Christmas Market on Moritzplatz and Martin-Luther-Platz. Experience the enchanting atmosphere at the Christmas Market, the so-called "Reiterlesmarkt". This Market dates back to the 15th century and is therefore one of the oldest in Germany. Its name refers to an old Teutonic legend: In pre-Christian time, the Teutons believed in a rider who would take care of a deceased person’s soul. While the Teutons were afraid of this mystic figure, people in the middle ages changed their attitude towards this rider, eagerly expecting him to appear because – according to the legend - he changed from a wild, rude man to a friendly messenger who brings gifts to all men on earth. A painting of this famous rider can be seen on the facade of the city hall. But on several occasions he ―becomes alive‖ again. For example, when the market is opened or when the children of the town go on their candlelight procession. The Reiterlesmarkt (in English) is always held from last Friday in November to the day before Christmas Eve.

The highlight here is the traditional "Lichterschiffchen-Fahren" , candle-lit- paper ships, on the Schwabach river on Sunday, 05 December. And don't miss the "Mittelfränkische Trachtenmuseum en miniature― (their local museum in small) displayed on Königsplatz.

You can expect the full Christmas program at this market: over 90 artisans will display their unique wares in quaint wooden sheds and stalls, dotted along the courtyard, behind the stables, and in the Schlosspark (only GE). A sophisticated cultural program with hunting horn concerts, Christmas music and performances complements the market. Children can listen to fairy tales and try out handicrafts. An alley illuminated by hundreds of candles, torches and lampions will create a solemn atmosphere, and you can watch an exciting fire show or illuminated hot-air balloons (only in good weather). The "Cafe Stephanie" in the former malthouse awaits you with a Scottish Whisky bar and select delicacies Since it's a bit of a distance to Tüssling, why not take this opportunity for a great day out: You could start the day with a visit to the (83209) Herrenchiemsee palace (in English), one of King Ludwig's famous castles right in the middle of idyllic Chiemsee lake. But please understand that opening hours are reduced during winter. Then if you like, you could travel to 84503 Altötting and visit the stunningly beautiful pilgrimage church (in English, click on the Union Jack at top right to change language). At the Kapellplatz / Chapel Square alone you'll find FOUR different churches that you can visit. Altötting will also offer you plenty of restaurants for a lovely lunch meal. And what better way to end this lovely trip with a visit to the Christmas market at Tüßling? Just when the sun sets and the lights come on is the perfect time for a leisurely stroll over the market, look out for some Christmas presents, and enjoy a cup of Glühwein - unless you're driving, of course!

The castle is the perfect surrounding for this lovely market. Various booths will sell Christmas decorations and the typical Christmas foods. Program: Sat., 10 Dec., 4 p.m.: Parade with lit lanterns, led by Vilseck's very own night watchman. Starts at the Marktplatz (market place). . 5 p.m.: Grand opening by Vilseck's mayor. 5:30 p.m.: Nikolaus, the German Santa Claus, will visit the market. 9 p.m.: End Sun., 11 Dec.,1 p.m.: Market opens. 5 p.m.: the "Christkind" visits the market. 7 p.m.: End.

Weiden 24 Nov. - 23 Dec: in 92637 Weiden, Altstadt (historic city center). Weiden's Christmas market has been held annually since 1576 and nowadays offers free, interesting entertainment (at ca. 5 p.m.) on the steps of the Altes Rathaus (historic city hall). The Rathaus itself is turned into a Christmas calendar where a new "door" (window, really) is opened every day. Opening hours: Mon. - Fri., 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Sat. 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Sun. 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. 26 & 27 Nov., and 3 & 4 Dec: 1 - 8 p.m.: Romantic Weihnachtsmarkt in 92637 Weiden, at the courtyard of the "Regionalbibliothek" (public library), Scheibenstraße 7, ph 0961-390-3013. A sea of candles will light the baroque courtyard, and the delicious smell of Christmas will waft through the air. In this romantic atmosphere, artisans and exhibitors will show and sell their beautiful goods. Of course there will be plenty of scrumptious Christmas delicacies as well! Admission is 1 Euro pp (which will get you a coupon worth 50 cents that you can use at the stalls). Kids are free.

Windischeschenbach 26 & 27 Nov: at the Schafferhof, 92670 Windischeschenbach / Neuhaus, Burgstrasse 6, 21 km / 13 miles north of Weiden. Everything at this arts and crafts market is unique, even the Zoigl (beer brewed by the local community) and the Schnapps. The market is held at the Schafferhof (the former farmyard) and at the castle which will pose the perfect surrounding for the subtle ilumination and the gospel choir. Admission is: 2.- Euros pp (includes access to the museum), children are free. In case of bad weather, the concerts will be held in the Hl.-Geist-Kirche (church) in Neuhaus. The market is open Sat. 2 - 11:59 p.m., Sun. 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.

Wolframs-Eschenbach 10 &11 Dec: in 91639 Wolframs-Eschenbach, 18 km / 11 miles SE of Ansbach. The "Sternlesmarkt", as it's known, is held at the churchyard, at the "Bürgersaal" (community hall), at the gallery of the "Deutschordensschloss" (palace), and at the "Museum Wolfram von Eschenbach". Opening hours: Sat. 1 - 7 p.m., Sun. 3 - 8 p.m.
