Camp Stanley Library Finds New Home at Community Activity Center

Story & Photos by SSG Matthew C Ritter

Renovations to government buildings seem to be a common theme in Area I in recent years. The Camp Stanley Library is no exception. One year ago, the library had four staff members that kept it open and running 70 hours a week, but today it’s down to one staff member working the desk only 40 hours a week. The Area I Command group and the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) Library Director Gordon Imrie, decided that Area I Soldiers and Family members deserve better. After carefully considering all available options, the decision was made to combine the library with the Camp Stanley Community Activity Center (CAC) allowing the library to remain open 7 days a week. Together with the CAC, Camp Stanley Soldiers and Family members now have access to all their favorite FMWR

Gordon Imrie activities in one convenient building. Any member of the DOD community can shoot pool, play video games, and check out newly released movies without stepping outside. The library will still maintain a wide variety of books and other reading materials to include popular best sellers, educational materials and a variety of magazines. The library also has over 4,000 DVDs available and 15 computers patrons can use to browse the web. “With us consolidating, we now have more space in the computer room for all 15 computers that will run on a civilian internet. The only thing that we will be losing by consolidating is book space,” says United States Army Garrison (USAG) Area One Command Sergeant Major Michael Hatfield. Fear not book lovers, one of the great benefits of FMWR libraries in Korea is the “inter-library loan.” CSM Hatfield and Imrie have those customers covered. “For Example, if there is any material that the Camp Stanley Library does not have, and the Yougsan library does, a customer can put a request in for that item and it will generally be delivered to the Camp Stanley Library within 24 hours,” says Imrie. 22

“If it can be ordered through Amazon, then we can get it within 2 weeks. We do our best to get what we think everyone wants but we would much rather take personal requests,” Imrie says. “When an item arrives at the library, the customer that requested it will receive a call to come pick it up. It does not get put on the shelf immediately,” Imrie concluded. If you visit any of the Area I libraries and check out a book or DVD you can drop it off at any of the Area I libraries. CSM Michael Hatfield One of the new items that the Camp Stanley Library offers for check out is the popular E-reader Amazon Kindle. If a library patron doesn’t want to carry around a handful of heavy books, they can ask the friendly staff to download their favorite reads onto a Kindle which they can take with them and read at their leisure. The new E-reading devices are available for a maximum 2-week period on a first come first served basis. Anyone interested in checking out one of the new E-readers should contact their local library. Owners of an Apple I-pad can go to the library and the staff will download the book(s) on to it,” CSM Hatfield stated. “You can simply go in and get 5 books on your I-pad, no questions asked.” Imrie says the library will continue to serve customers as best they can. He and his library staff welcomes, and greatly appreciates, patron feedback regarding all library services. The “new” Camp Stanley Library is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 7 days a week. The Camp Stanley CAC and library are now conveniently located adjacent to the bus stop and next to the Commissary. For more information about the Camp Stanley Library please call 732-5366 or 732-6723. IN THE ZONE

ETIQUETTE & ESPIONAGE by Gail Carriger

Reviewed by Ealish Waddell Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is bold, adventurous and, in her mother’s own words, a “cracking great bother.” It’s not really much of a surprise that she’d find herself sent to finishing school. It’s the school itself that defies expectation. To begin with, Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality is an airship, suspended under giant balloons above the foggy moors. Its staff includes a vampire and werewolf. The schedule includes classes on not just dancing and deportment, but also deception, poison-making and knife-throwing. It turns out that the students won’t be

the only ones being finished around here. Sophronia loves it. She makes friends all over the ship, including a resourceful sootie from the engine room called Soap, and Vieve, a junior mechanical genius. But she makes enemies as well, like the vicious and cagey Monique, who seems to know something about the mysterious missing “prototype” that teachers, pirates and shadowy government agents alike are after. A semester of schemes and secrets culminates in a covert battle at Sophronia’s first fancy ball, in which all her newfound skills of fanwaving, eyelash-fluttering and villain-vanquishing will be put to the test. “Etiquette & Espionage” shares the same setting as Carriger’s earlier “Parasol Protectorate” series: a pseudo-Victorian steampunky England where the supernatural coexists with the mundane. It’s an inventive and whimsical place, populated by people with names like Mrs. Barnaclegoose and Lord Dingleproops, and peppered with marvels like clockwork butlers, tiny steam-powered pet dachshunds and exploding wicker chickens. With relatable characters, daring escapades and a hint of young romance, this is the first book of a new series that promises to be a lot of fun.

Take Steps to Dispute Credit-Report Errors —There is a specific process for getting misinformation corrected, but you need to take the first step. Contact the reporting agency by phone, mail or online. —Expect a response within the required 30 to 45 days. The credit agency has to send the disputed information to the originating source and give it time to investigate. If the information is wrong, that source must make a correction and immediately notify all three credit reporting agencies.

by David Uffington If you determine that there are errors on your credit report, it’s your responsibility to take the steps to have them corrected. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling offers a list of ways to dispute credit errors: —Take advantage of the free annual report that all consumers can send for. (Some states allow two free reports per year.) Get one from all three of the big agencies (TransUnion, Equifax and Experian), and check them carefully. —If you plan to take a big financial step, such as applying home loan or buying a car, send for your credit reports at least three months in advance. If errors are found, you’ll have time to get them corrected.

48

USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

—Each item on a credit report has a different value in determining your credit score. Note especially any information that isn’t about you, inaccurate credit limits, and any negative information that should have scrolled off your report at the end of the allowed period. If negative information is true, it won’t be removed immediately. For example, information about an unpaid judgment can stay for seven years, a bankruptcy for 10 years. After that, it must be removed. —Don’t pay someone to fix your credit. You can do it for free, and will likely do a better job because of your own interest in making your credit report correct. If you do hire a creditrepair company, it is not allowed to ask for a fee in advance. Especially avoid companies that promise a quick fix. They’re in no position to promise a fix of any kind, much less a quick one. —Take advantage of the Statement of Dispute, your 100 words of explanation that gets attached to your credit file. That statement will be shown to anyone who pulls your credit report, or who has done so recently, if you request it.

Newton Center, a main observatory center of Songsam Observatory has a 600mm RitcheyChretien reflecting telescope allowing for clear and convenient observation of the stars. Galilei Center, a sub-observatory facility has 7 telescopes including reflecting, catadioptric and refracting telescopes, as well as a CCD camera, digital camera, intermediate telescope and other observation aid devices. Facilities at the observatory include the Challenger Learning Center, a Digital Planetarium, and Star House, a four-story accommodation/training facility.
