Starting as early as March, the bone numbing cold and freezing temperatures of winter will begin to subside. It will probably still be quite cool, but it will eventually fade—something I know the great people in our great community are looking forward to! The Raymond M. Santiago return of warmer weather will bring beautiful tree CRD / Acting DFMWR blossoms and flowers, followed by exuberant outdoor activities, new life and precious time spent with loved ones as the Easter holiday rounds out the month of March. Needless to say, your Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (FMWR) Team is gearing up with some exciting activities and events that will encourage you to enjoy all that spring has to offer! • Armed Forces Entertainment (AFE) and FMWR is hosting the ‘Black Widow,’ Jeanette Lee on Monday, March 14 / 7 p.m. at the Casey CAC. • Join us in an overnight tour from March 19-21 to Jeju Island, also known as the ‘Island of the Gods’ to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, beach walks and more! • A Spring Simulation Golf Tournament at Camp Casey Indianhead Golf Course will begin in March all the way to April 2016; and for those of you who just want to whack a golf ball as hard as you can, they’re hosting a Simulation Long-Drive Competition as well. Call 730-4884 for more info. All of these exciting events and activities are just a part of what FMWR offers this month! And don’t forget our routine programming such as Family Time Bowling at Stanley Lanes, Saturdays from 12 noon to 5 p.m., or our Framing/ Matting Class at Casey Arts and Crafts Center, Saturdays from 2-4 p.m., and many others you’ll see as you read the ITZ! Your FMWR Team is honored to provide these opportunities to our Area I community and we hope each of you will get a chance to come out and enjoy all that the springtime and FMWR has to offer! Happy Spring!

The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a strip of land established at the end of the Korean War to serve as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. It is a barrier that essentially cuts the Korean Peninsula roughly in half, and is regarded as one of the most heavily militarized borders in the world. Although the two Koreas have agreed to a ceasefire, no peace agreement or treaty was signed; and therefore, the two sides are still technically at war today. Good Morning
Vietnam! A TRIP BACK IN TIME WITH FAMILY AND MWR FEBRUARY 12-16, 2016
Story & Photos by: Paul Henevich, Recreation Specialist
For some, the tour was a way to reconnect with their loved ones’ experiences. “My dad and uncle came over here during the Vietnam War, and I heard so much about the country from them. I wanted to follow in their footsteps and learn more about Vietnam,” said Sergeant Christal Crawford. As much as we wanted to learn more from each other, we still had to get up early so the group slowly made their way back to their rooms for a few hours of rest. In a short while, our guide Mr. Nguyen Le Quan, gathered the crew to board the bus for the 2-hour trip to Hue. Along the way, Mr. Quan regaled us with tidbits on Vietnamese life, one I remembered from him was how Vietnamese men only wanted six things in life:
1. Have One Wife 2. Have Two Kids 3. Have a 3-Level House 4. Have 4-Wheeled Car 5. Travel to 5 Continents 6. Have a 6-Sided box at the End
Wow, if ever there was an Asia trip you should have been on this year, this was it. On February 12, 2016 the Family and FMWR Team took 18 members of the Area I community on a President’s Day trip to central Vietnam to experience history, shopping, great food, fun atmosphere; accompanied by an awesome tour guide who helped make this tour as memorable as possible. It’s not every day you get to visit a foreign country, so when the opportunity came for me, I packed my bags quickly and prepared for an adventure I won’t soon forget!
That last part was in reference to a coffin, which may not mean much to us; but a lot of family members lost their dead in the war, with a large number of them still unrecovered. To the Vietnamese, being able to visit the grave and honor their dead means a lot to their families.
We started the trip flying in late at midnight and checked into the Diamond Sea, a 4-Star hotel in Danang. Although it was late at night, the crew appeared to be amped up, with the excitement building so we grabbed a couple beverages at the hotel and bonded over stories of past duty stations and expectations during this tour.
We pulled in to Hue eventually for lunch, and I’d like to point out that the food WAS INCLUDED during this trip, and we only had to pay for our own drinks! The food was great, and just kept on coming; and in case you wanted to know more about the beverages, well, the place had their own variety of beers—so a number of us sampled a good portion of them!

“The variety of dishes available allowed everyone to taste so many different kinds of traditional food. What I also found impressive was how they accommodated two people who didn’t eat pork, and one person who was a vegetarian. The restaurant staff went out of their way to make the meal into a positive culinary experience,” said Mr. Raymond Griffith, Area I DES Training Chief. Once we’ve had our fill, we headed off to the Century Riverside Hotel, a 4-Star Hotel in Hue City before heading off to the Imperial Citadel. The complex we visited was huge, with three rings of walls: the outer wall was used as a local market, the second wall was for high-court officials, and the third innermost ring was for the king, his concubines and close members of the royal family. It was a humbling experience, to be transported back in time and walk the sacred ground of past Vietnamese kings and other royalty. Because of the Tet offensive of January 31, 1968 you can still see bullet holes all over the place with numerous gateways pockmarked by signs of battle. Some of the buildings were pointed out to be recreations since original structures were destroyed during the Vietnam War. One in particular was the King’s Meeting Hall which was destroyed and rebuilt,
with the exception of the king’s throne which was untouched by war, believed to be because of the king’s spirit who protected it during the conflict. We were instructed by the palace staff not to take pictures of the throne, so as not to disturb the spirit of the king. Our next stopover was Thien Mu Pagoda built in 1601, considered one of the oldest religious temples in Vietnam. Now I know some might say “you’ve seen one Buddhist temple, you’ve seen them all,” which does apply to some temples, but this one had historical significance. This was the temple where the Mahayana Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc resided, the same monk who immolated himself in protest of Buddhist persecution by the South Vietnamese; an act which led to the overthrow of the Diem government, inadvertently helping set the stage for American involvement in the Vietnam War. As the sun was setting, we were rounded up for a scenic, leisurely boat ride back to the hotel where we were dressed up literally, as Vietnamese Royalty for dinner. We had numerous photo ops in our Vietnamese attire as we headed to dinner. As for dinner, the food to say the least, was fit for royalty—and it was included in the tour cost! Enhancing the experience was a Vietnamese live band who serenaded us with traditional music as we ate to our hearts content…it was a fine ending to a very pleasant day. The next morning we loaded up and drove off to Hai Van Pass, a twisty-turning road that at one point was the only way to get from Hue to Danang. One thing we noticed aside from the great ocean view, were the shrines lining the roads. Mr. Quan later explained that the Vietnamese create shrines for the spirit of their dead, highlighting how much the country honors their departed. On the way, we visited a stone cutter’s village where we saw many fine carvings and local craftworks, which a few among the group happily purchased as souvenirs.

appreciated the detail the ancient Vietnamese people put into their structures. This site in particular, was very rich in history,” said First Lieutenant Alvin Yasay We spent a good full day at My Son Holy Land, and it was back to Danang for a farewell dinner at a fine Italian Restaurant where everyone appeared to be talking about the great experience they’ve had, and how time flew by so fast in the past couple of days. Perhaps the observation of Mr. Jack Ferguson, ACS Director summarizes it best. “I signed up for a tour and got an experience that will be with me for a long time. The trip was fantastic, there was no animosity from local people; we were in the company of warm, welcoming and helpful people. The central highlands were beautiful, the meals were great, the trip was wellplanned and executed on every level. There is much more that I could say, but it is difficult to express… am definitely returning and planning my next trip to Vietnam,” he added with a smile.
Our next stop was a World Heritage Site, the ancient town of Hoi An where we checked-in at the Hoi An Glory Hotel & Spa, yup you guessed it—a 4-Star Hotel! We had another enjoyable lunch, and the rest of the day was spent shopping and visiting local markets, Chinese assembly halls and a Japanese Covered Bridge. One of the highlights of the day was a visit to a local silk factory which had unbelievable great prices for fine silk products. Needless to say, a number of us bought plenty of souvenirs to take back home to our families. We were given some free time upon our return to the hotel, an opportunity some of the group quickly turned into swim time at our hotel pool. After a relaxing dip, we headed back to Hoi An for a fine dinner by the riverside. For those of you who’ve been fortunate to experience something similar, the evening was so sublime; the warm lights, serene flow of the river, the fine breeze, as we were enjoying a dinner under the stars…I was falling in love with Vietnam. On the final day of our Vietnam tour we traveled to My Son Holy Land, recognized as a World Cultural Heritage site; once the religious and intellectual center of the Champa Kingdom which flourished from the 4th to the 13th century. Even now, and throughout the centuries, the structures that remained were impressive; one could just imagine the inspiration and awe felt the very first visitors, when these intricately carved temples were completed by Cham craftsmen. “This was the biggest highlight for me, taking a tour around the ruins of the My Son Temple. Some of us came to Vietnam to learn its history, some to feel closer to family members that once served here, and others were here for a good time and fond memories. For me, this trip fulfilled all that and then some. This was certainly one trip I won’t soon forget. Maybe next time you can come. *Don’t miss out on the next Local or Overseas Tour. Area I Family & MWR is hosting another trip to Jeju Island from March 19-21, visit or contact your local Area I Community Activity Center for more information.

science, while encouraging kids to do well in school. Volunteering started very early on for Ms. Richarme. The Girl Scouts was one of her earliest commitments to volunteering. As a volunteer, she managed cookie sales for over 30 troops for six years, while serving as a troop leader and day camp leader. Through the years she has continued to serve her community, volunteering with various organizations, and in different capacities. Ms. Richarme continued as a volunteer supporting Chapel functions at Fort Huachuca before coming to South Korea. The experience gained there allowed her to transition and become an essential volunteer leader at the CRC Warriors Chapel, where she teaches and assists with the children’s Protestant Sunday School classes. In addition to volunteering with the CRC Chapel Protestant Services, one can also find her volunteering at the CRC Thrift Shop, and the American Red Cross. However, it is with the Red Cross that she has given the most of her time. The American Red Cross has truly benefitted from her servant’s heart, especially at Camp Red Cloud, where she has accumulated more than 600 hours with the organization alone. “Her excellent organization skills and

volunteer too,” expresses Ms. Brenda Dean, CRC’s Regional
Ms. Amy Richarme has the heart of a servant. Therefore, her response came as no surprise to her family, when they called her up and asked, “Mom, can you take some time off from teaching high school science and help the family while we are in South Korea?” According to Ms. Richarme, when a request for help comes from one of her own, the answer is always “yes.” Over the years, and since arriving to Korea in March 2014, Ms. Richarme has volunteered many hours to supporting organizations and local events within the Area I community. In all, Ms. Richarme has given over 720 certified hours of her time to various organizations in Area 1. “Volunteering is both fun and productive,” Ms. Richarme says. “It’s a great way to meet people and give something to the community.” Today, the community is like her extended family; and just like family when called upon for help and support from one of her own, her answer has always been “yes”. Ms. Richarme hails from Dallas, Texas, by way of Fort Huachuca, Arizona. It was in the Dallas area near Southlake, where she donated much of her time to volunteering. Ms. Richarme took time off from her teaching position with the public schools system, to serve and assist over 100 boys and girls at a West Dallas community center. Despite the community center’s location in one of Dallas’ low-income areas, Ms. Richarme brought fun science activities to the center’s summer and after school programs. She soon became known there as “the science lady” because of the fun and exciting methods she used to teach

Program Specialist. Ms. Richarme credits the Red Cross staff as the one who makes volunteering there so much fun. One of her primary volunteer roles there is as a Health and Safety Instructor, providing certification training and courses in First Aid, CPR, AED and Babysitting. “When Ms. Dean found out that I am a teacher, she arranged for me to become certified to teach the Red Cross Health and Safety courses,” Ms. Richarme explained. “I was so happy to use my teaching skills and bring this important information to the Area 1 community.” In the past year, Ms. Richarme has taught twelve classes thus far. She has held the training on Camp Casey, Camp Stanley, as well as Camp Red Cloud. “We would love to have 10% of the population learning this valuable information,” stated Ms. Dean. Ms. Richarme loves teaching, and the American Red Cross has provided her that outlet to keep teaching while living here, in South Korea. She urges more people to volunteer, understanding that volunteering is a fun way to support your community. Ms. Richarme embodies the Spirit of Volunteerism and exemplifies the Army’s Volunteer Corp Tradition of Service to the Community. For this, we are grateful, and say thank you, Ms. Amy Richarme! Congratulations! You are in the Community Volunteer Spotlight for the month of March 2016.

“The Meaning Behind Our Area I Family & MWR Logo” Korea not only has a rich history, but geographically it is surrounded on the east and west with beautiful mountainous terrain, and to the south with open seas. The AREA I FAMILY & MWR logo was designed with this in mind. The three main features of the logo are the ‘rising sun,’ the ‘two magpies in flight’ and the Chinese symbol for the word ‘human.’ The rising sun expresses the beauty of Korea as well as hope for the future. The magpie is a common symbol of Korea, adopted as the national bird in 1964—two of these birds seen together is considered as a harbinger of good luck or joy. The symbol for ‘human’ or ‘people,’ not only speaks of the Korean population but also represents Korean, Japanese and Chinese culture. The human symbol also mirrors many of the large and small mountains found throughout the country, as well as traditional Korean residential roof tops. Because of the familiarity of the Chinese symbol for ‘human,’ so widely embraced in Korea, it was fitting to include it in the AREA I FAMILY & MWR logo, representing service to Soldiers, their families and others who live and work in the AREA I community.

It's not by accident that we want to express Christ's love to you with genuine, heartfelt warmth. We're excited to share with you the marvelous ways God is working and moving in our church. It won't take you long to discover that this is truly a church family, rich in the relationship that matter most. Growing together, we worship, serve, laugh, cry, learn, and we reach out to the community and the world with life-transforming truth. We extend our hand and heart out to you , as well. Our doors are open to invite you and your Family to worship with us. If you've been thinking, praying, searching for a church and hoping for a place to belong, you've found us. We say again, Welcome! His Anointing Christian Church International is located in Uijeongbu, South Korea, Just 5 Minutes from Gate#2 Camp Red Cloud. Bishop Melvin & Vernice Green are the Pastors.
