Although the two Koreas have agreed to a ceasefire, no peace agreement or treaty was signed; and therefore, the two sides are still technically at war today.

You’re in Korea, most likely stationed in one of four Army garrisons in the peninsula. You live in-country, experienced the culture, enjoyed the food, interacted with the Korean community—you’ve been here for a while, but have you ever wondered about events and circumstances that brought us here? How do you explain to family members, the significance of a 65-year alliance ‘forged in blood’ with South Korea? Where do you see our place in history, from the onset until present, or perhaps even the future? On the 10th of June 2016, USAG Red Cloud Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation is extending an offer to 20 participants, to take part in a historical tour that will answer these questions and more. We’ll take you back in time to Chinhae, the Pusan Perimeter, the Nakdong Victory Memorial Hall, the Battle of Osan, MacArthur’s Incheon Landing, the Park of Freedom, a visit to the DMZ Tunnels/OP-Dora and a sumptuous dinner at Camp Casey on the final leg of this memorable journey. You’ve received the standard briefing on the Korean Armistice Agreement….but it is not enough. We guarantee, you’ll grasp the full significance of our presence, once you visit the places that connect us to history. Join our Family and MWR team on June 10-14 as we trace the path of heroes before us, and provide you with better insight and a much clearer understanding of WHY we are here today.

Jeju Island
Story and Photos By Terrie Elmer
It has been a cold and dreary few months here in Area 1 South Korea, so what better way to prepare for Spring than a trip to beautiful Jeju Island. With a more temperate climate, Jeju is known as the Hawaii of Korea. Though not as warm year round as Hawaii, due to warm ocean currents around Jeju, the temperatures rarely fall below freezing in winter. This makes for an early Spring arrival and made for an amazing trip to bring everyone out of the doldrums of winter. Upon arrival we were met by our tour guide, Ms. O, or Janice, as she used a more Americanized name to make it easier for everyone to use than her Korean name. She made us all feel welcome and she was quite informative as we went to each destination. She was also very impressed that many on the tour seemed to know a bit of Korean, as we chimed in with Nay (yes), kamsah hamneedah (thank you) or Ahn-nyong ha-say-yo (good morning, afternoon, evening). Our first stop was Sangumburi Crater, which was formed out of a now extinct volcano. The crater has a 2 km circumference with a walking path to the top. At the entrance is where we first saw the Grandfather Guardian or Dol hareubang statues that were

and fertility. The placement of the hands on the statues tell if the statue is a warrior or scholar. Janice also explained that it is believed if you rub the nose of the statue you are more likely to have a boy, whereas. if you touch the ear you will have a girl. There were also burial mounds at the site. We were told that in Korean culture, because many are Buddhist, that returning to the earth was very important. The mounds are shaped like a pregnant woman’s stomach to represent re-birth. After leaving Sangumburi Crater, we then headed to a traditional Korean restaurant for lunch. The Black Pork of Jeju is a traditional dish and is quite tasty. The meal was served in large pans simmering on gas burners in the center of the table. There were many side dishes, also known as boncheon and steamed white rice. It was a great time to gather together and enjoy the company of others on the

tour and make new friends. After lunch, and for some a brief nap on the bus, we arrived at our next location, Jeju Folk Village. The homes here are traditional thatch roofed cottages with walls made from lava stone and clay. Each home had a gate with three wooden poles placed in different ways to let people know if the person in the home was accepting visitors. If all poles are up then no one is home, one pole up means the person will be returning soon and all poles down means they are home and they are accepting visitors. We were able to go into the courtyard of the model homes so we could see inside the buildings. There was also a much more palatial building built in the traditional Korean temple style which housed the local government offices. The village itself still has residents living there and it was

odd to see, but there were satellite dishes on the edge of the thatched roofs of some homes as well as cars parked out front. A strange blend of traditional and modern society. Our last stop on the tour for the day was Seongsan Ilchulbong, Sunrise Peak. Like Sangumburi, this is a plateau-like basin formed
from a volcano rising high above the ocean, it is quite an impressive sight. There is a walkway going up to the top and though it is said you can make the walk in 20 minutes, you might want to give yourself a bit more time so that you can stop, rest and take pictures along the way. going down to the Jeju Women Divers, where if your timing is right, you can see a demonstration of the women diving. The women divers can hold their breath for two minutes or more as they collect abalone, octopus and other sea creatures. Janice told us that the youngest diver was in her 40’s and the oldest was in her 90’s. With our first day complete, we headed to the Ocean Palace Hotel in Seogwipo. The hotel is a boutique style hotel with beautifully decorated, comfortable rooms. Our room had an amazing view of the ocean and some little islands just offshore. There is a convenience store, gift shop and restaurant off the hotel lobby. There was a plethora of restaurants in the surrounding area to choose from for

your dining pleasure. Breakfast at the hotel was included in our tour package, presented buffet style with scrambled eggs, fried rice, many Korean traditional foods, fruit, cereal and beverages of your choice. Day two was at our leisure. Many in our group rented taxis for the day for approximately W120,000 per taxi. This allowed them to go to different shopping venues, museums, zip lining and other various sites and attractions. We personally chose to go to the
Seonim-gyo(bridge)
Yeomiji Botanical Gardens. It is one of the largest botanical gardens in Asia and has approximately 2,000 tropical and sub-tropical plants. We also visited the Cheonjeyon Falls and Seonimgyo Bridge. The falls were beautiful, but the bridge was absolutely stunning. Seven nymph carvings adorn the structure on either side. Each nymph has their own musical instrument. There is also a Buddhist temple as you enter the area and a fountain symbolizing the five blessings of longevity,

major agricultural product from Jeju. I can tell you from personal experience that the O’Sulloc green tea with tangerine is amazing, as are all of the other teas that they carry. The museum gives great information on the tea industry. You can also stop by the InnisFree skincare shop while here or go to the café’ for some green tea ice cream, or one of the many other green tea based beverages or desserts. wealth, honor, love and sons, with a different animal representing each blessing. Our last day was filled with many attractions, starting with Oedolgae. This stone pillar stands alone by itself in the sea. The story behind it is that there was once a married couple, and one day the man went to sea to go on a fishing trip. The woman stood waiting for her husband to return, however he was swept away at sea by a typhoon. The woman stood, waiting and waiting and waiting…. Until one day, she turned to stone. Oedolgae in the Korean language means lonely rock. Next was Jeongbang waterfall, which attracted a large crowd admiring the water falling from the cliff into the ocean. We found out that by taking stairs down the cliffside to the rocks below, you can
Temple Sangbansan
Seashore to view a huge lava dome with a cave overlooking the ocean. There are also three Buddhist temples, two lower temples outside and one within the cave about half way up the dome. Then it was on to lunch at another Korean traditional style restaurant. After lunch we went to the O’Sulloc Tea House and Museum. Since Jeju is on an Island, industrial and manufacturing industries were not feasible, so Jeju became an agricultural area. Something I have failed to mention to this point is that the aromas in Jeju are wonderful. The air is scented with tangerine and magnolia everywhere you go. Tangerines are grown year-round, inside and outside of greenhouses. Green tea is another
the airport was the Tropical Hallim Park. Comprised of several different botanical gardens, three caves and a folk village, this park gives you a tremendous overall feel for Jeju Island. There is a bonsai garden with hundreds of bonsai trees and rock sculptures. The caves run right in a row, with wonderful descriptors of the formations inside each one. We spent an hour and a half here, but honestly, I could have spent an entire day. So, that pretty well sums up this trip and I am so glad that I got to go and have this experience. These are memories that will last a lifetime and I look forward to taking advantage of the many other MWR sponsored trips offered through Area 1 FMWR. Everyone should try and take at least one trip while here, as these are experiences that could help complete your bucket list. Until next time, Ahn-nyong-hee kah-say-yo.

HANSON POOL GRAND RE-OPENING PARTY ‘Beat the Summer Heat, Take a Splash at Hanson Pool’

Get those swim trunks and bathing suits ready, THE ONE AND ONLY outdoor pool in Area I is re-opening on May 27, 2016!
MAY 27, 1100
The Family and MWR, Area I Sports, Fitness and Aquatics team is concluding an 8-month repair and maintenance project at Camp Casey, Hanson Field House Outdoor Pool. “The repairs were initiated as a result of deteriorating pipes, ripped pool liners, flaws on the wooden deck and pool deck surfaces, replacement of both high/low diving boards and substantial pump room upgrades” said Larry Butler, Area I Director of Sports, Fitness and Aquatics. “We wanted to present a fun, and most importantly, safe pool venue for the community, and the only way we can ensure this is by undertaking these repairs.” The pool project which began in September 15, 2015 is drawing to a close. Along with these much-needed repairs, you’ll notice a very visible (most definitely welcome) additions to the pool—two large cabanas for private parties, 14 small cabanas for sunbeds, and a large, 20-person outdoor Jacuzzi! If you’ve ever wondered about having a pool party venue for units or family members, well; Area I Sports, Fitness & Aquatics now has you covered, figuratively and literally. “During the designing phase with the Directorate of Public Works (DPW), customer input from last year’s end of the season surveys played a big role in identifying that Soldiers wanted a place to have poolside parties. Now we have two permanent cabanas that offer shade from the summer heat, while providing some privacy for unit functions,” Larry pointed out with a smile. During the weekends, expect a Family & MWR food booth offering BBQ food items, snacks, and non-alcoholic drinks. If you wish to reserve one of the two, or both cabanas, stop by and see Ms. Sin, Hanson Pool Facility Manager; she’ll make the reservation, and get you in touch with the FMWR Catering Branch for all of your food and beverage needs. Speaking of a party, Area I Sports, Fitness and Aquatics in collaboration with Area I BOSS is planning a huge Grand Re-Opening event at Hanson Outdoor Pool on Friday, May 27. The event will commence with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m., followed by live entertainment, games, a BBQ cookout (sponsored by the Gary Sinise Foundation), FMWR giveaways and much more, all the way until 6 p.m. If you haven’t noticed already, its summertime—time to beat the heat, and take a splash at our Hanson Outdoor Pool party on May 27! We’ll see you there!

PHOTOGRAPHERS SHARE VISIONS IN 2015 ARMY DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST Feature Article
By Tim Hipps U.S. Army Installation Management Command
FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas (March 29, 2016) – A Soldier and two family members won 10 awards between the three of them in the 2015 Army Digital Photography Contest. The contest, hosted annually by the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation division of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, received 2,509 entries, from which 14 first, second and third-place winners were selected, along with 23 honorable mentions. Photographs were judged in seven categories – animals, design elements, digital darkroom, military life, nature and landscapes, people, still life – in two divisions: active duty and other eligible patrons, which include military retirees and family members. Family member Mylan Dawson, of Fort Shafter, Hawaii, won design elements with “Blue and Gold Virgin River,” took second in digital darkroom with “Early Morning in Prague,” and was third in design elements with “Death Valley Curves.” She also received an honorable mention in nature and landscape with “Punchbowl Falls.” Family member Kimberly Kendall, of Wiesbaden, Germany, took first places in nature and landscape with “Karakul Lake” and people with “Uyghur Shepherds.” Her “Man with a Story” also earned an honorable mention in the people category. Chief Warrant Officer 2 Matthew Mizner, of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, took second place in the design elements category of the active duty division with “Old Glory.” He also earned honorable mentions with “The Swing” in the people category and “Interstellar Apple” in still life. “Old Glory came from a similar process I had seen a while ago,” Mizner said. “It involved a 24-inch tall glass filled with water, olive oil and dish soap. I placed a small flag under the glass, and the design was magnified through the water and oil.” “The Swing,” Mizner said was simply a matter of being at the right place at the right time – and ready to shoot – during a family outing at Cheekwood [Botanical Garden and Museum of Art] in Nashville, Tennessee.

COMMUNITY OLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
LTC ALLEN T. THIESSEN
2ID/RUCD DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF
Story by Patrick Schoolfield, ACS Program Manager
This month our Community Volunteer Spotlight shines upon LTC Allen T. Thiessen, the 2ID/RUCD Deputy Chief of Staff. It is a rare but special treat to feature one of our own Senior Officers, in light of the fact that their accomplishments and contributions as a volunteer can be overshadowed by the position they hold, and/or their rank. However, Volunteerism is an innate quality of a Good Leader. Likewise, it is a core characteristic of a Good Volunteer. They are interwoven together, as if they are one entity. Needless to say, there are some excellent military leaders within the U.S. Army’s Volunteer Corp (AVC) who demonstrates such qualities and maintain these characteristics, leaders such as LTC Thiessen, who still believes in making a positive difference and “Setting the Example” in the community. LTC Thiessen joined the Area I community during the

summer month of July 2015, after completing a tour with USPACOM, located in Honolulu, Hawaii. True to his beliefs— that one should enjoy their time here in this beautiful country, meeting the people, and learning the culture. What better way to do so than as a Volunteer! LTC Thiessen wasted no time in getting involved and helping with community related activities and events. Nothing close to a Novice Volunteer anymore, LTC Thiessen has been volunteering for quite some time. It goes as far back as 1989, to when he was a “Big Brother” Volunteer with the West Point (NY) Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program and the Hudson Valley Special Olympics. Volunteering as a “Big Brother” made such a positive impact on the kids who participated in this program. Additionally, such support put the Corp of Cadets in a very positive light to the local community and national organization. With such positive reflection and feedback, LTC Thiessen continued to volunteer during his various duty assignments and military tours around the world, including CYS Sports, Education Center (ASVAB, College Proctor, and Tutor), and local community marathons and Humane Society. As an Area I volunteer, LTC Thiessen volunteered in a variety of events including “Adopt-an-Orphan” Christmas Party Sponsor (Camp Casey); a Red Cross Volunteer for Christmas Stocking Distribution, First Aid Class, Brochure Development and Distribution, Super Bowl 50 Booth and Raffle, Valentine’s Day Cupcakes (Area I and Camp Red Cloud/ Stanley); “Christmas at CRC” Rehearsal and Presentation (Camp Red Cloud); ASVAB GT Score Improvement Tutoring (Camp Red Cloud); English Conversation Class (City of Uijeongbu); Breakfast for HSC Soldiers (Camp Red Cloud); Book Club/Professional Reading to Support Commander’s Cup Efforts (Camp Red Cloud); and Community Relations Event-- Kun-Brothers/ Sisters (Camp Red Cloud). When asked, why does he volunteer, LTC Thiessen’s response was candid and right on point, “Because unfortunately there are and always will be
Army Community Service
those who are less fortunate and never enough people to help them either because they don’t know how to help or are “too busy” with other things. I am in Korea, by myself, I have the free time, and I want to set an example for others, especially my children. Maybe it’s a bit selfish but at the end of the day of volunteering, I feel good about myself, especially if I was able to lift the burden off of someone’s shoulders even for a little while.” It is likely a safe bet that LTC Thiessen has already demonstrated having strong, broad, and well-developed shoulders from carrying the added weight of responsibilities that comes with becoming a Senior Military Officer. However, serving as a volunteer, “this is not about a single-person or trying to stand out.” points out LTC Thiessen. “The volunteer activities I have been blessed to take part in are a team effort; a group of caring, compassionate people striving to make a situation better for others who may not be as fortunate. If there is a reason to “take charge” or play a key role, I would like to think that I, or someone else who is just as or more capable, can and will take the lead as necessary to make things happen.” Spoken like a true leader! LTC Thiessen continues to make a positive and lasting impact on the lives of those around him in and out of uniform. His time and commitment to volunteering exemplifies the Army’s Volunteer Corp invaluable service to his organization and the Area I community. For this we are grateful, and say ‘Thank you’ and Congratulations LTC Allen Thiessen, for being in the “Community Volunteer Spotlight” for the month of May 2016.

Energy Drinks: Are they worth the hidden cost?
By 2nd Lt. Kira Heartwick Energy drinks promise to “give you wings,” “unleash the beast,” and help you “party like a rockstar.” They promise to increase endurance, metabolism, and concentration as well as improve reaction, speed and performance. However, there are also reports of caffeine-related adverse events. Because of this, the safety of energy drinks is under review. Caffeine and other stimulants are credited with the stimulating properties of energy drinks. Caffeine occurs naturally in foods like coffee beans, tea leaves, and cocoa beans. In small doses— 100 to 200 milligrams— caffeine can spur feelings of wakefulness and improve mood. Effects can be felt within one hour and last four to six hours. More than 200 to 300 milligrams can cause insomnia, increased heart rates, and anxiety. In general, less than 500 milligrams per day is considered safe. However, intakes greater than 500 milligrams can lead to severe adverse reactions. People may experience increased blood pressure, heart palpitations, and even death, particularly if taken with alcohol or in a dehydrated state. To put this into perspective, a 20-ounce soda contains 58 milligrams of caffeine, a 16-ounce coffee has 100 milligrams of caffeine, and a 16-ounce energy drink contains 260 milligrams of caffeine. Energy drinks also come in 24-ounce containers that contain 240 milligrams of caffeine. According to one study, individuals who normally consume energy drinks have at least two per day. By drinking two 24-ounce cans, you would be at risk of
60
USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
exceeding the limit. Additionally, energy drinks contain other ingredients, such as panax ginseng, guarana, and green tea extract that are reported to have stimulating effects similar to caffeine. However, there is little to no research showing that these ingredients have beneficial effects on either cognitive or physical performance. Remember, energy drinks do not replace sleep but only relieves symptoms temporarily. So, if you enjoy energy drinks, look for ones with fewer ingredients and keep the overall caffeine dose under 400 mg a day. Improvements in speed and performance only come from a good training plan and fatigue is best relieved with adequate sleep! Aim for 7-9 hours a night.
