KILLS TRAMPOLINE

Trampoline is the only event the United States has contributed to the sport of gymnastics. This event is now rapidly gaining popularity in many foreign countries. There has been trampoline competition on an international level for the past few years and this past year saw the formation of the International Trampoline Federation.

....

This event will no longer be contested in collegiate competition. This recent action was taken by the N.C .A .A. Governing Council without even consul ting the N.C. A.A o Gymnastics Rules Committee.

SUBSCRIBE NOW!

As I have yet to hear the entire reasoning behind this move I am at best second guessing when I say the N .C .A .A. made this decision in the hopes of future safety in the sport of gymnastics due to several serious accidents which have occured on the trampoline. If this is the case then is football the next to go? The sport of gymnastics, even considering all even ts , cannot come anywhere near football in the number of serious injuries and even deaths which occur each year on the football field. This , of course, will not happen (eliminate football) because football pays the bills.

Trampoline went through a period with the "Trampoline Centers" when a great .number of injuries occured due to the lack of proper supervision.

GYMNASTICS Report by Terry Sendgraff

On April 13-15, 1967 the U .S.G.F. Organiza.tional Conference for Women 1 s Gymnastics convened at the Flamingo Motor Hotel in Tucson, Ariz. The following people were in attendance: Shirley Bryon, Kerstin Edgar, Judy Hall, Sharon Pirkl, Mildred Prchal, Terry Sendgraff, Jackie Uphues, and Sharon Wilch. At the first session, Frank Bare, Executive Director of the USGF, was present to review the development of the USGF. At present, gymnastics is a small sport in this country and if it is to progress and grow, a national program has to be developed. Over the past few years, gymnastics has received a great deal of publicity and people are more aware of gymnastics as a sport. The U .S .G .F. operates under a constitution and the elected officers are a Pres . ' Vice-Pres. for Men, Vice-Pres. for Women, a Secretary-Treasurer, and two members at large. These people make the administrative decisions and establish the governing policies of the Federation. The U.S.G.F. also has a Governing Council which has representatives from the following; NCAA, AAHPER, National High School Federation, N"'ational Junior College Athletic Association, The American Turners, National High School Coaches Association, and the Nat 1 1. College Coaches Association. The following sessions were conducted by Jackie Uphues and assisted by Mildred Prchal, who jointly handled the background work for the conference. Jackie Uphues, Vice President for Wo~en, explained what things have been done in w:omen' s gymnastics to date; i.e., publications of the U .S .G.F. rules and policies for women's gymnastics, the co-operative effortbythe U.S.G.F. and the D.G.W.S. in

composing compulsory competitive routines, the staging of Annual Gymnastics Competitions for Women, and the conducting of several judging and instructional clinics for teachers, mainly in the Midwest area. She then presented the ideas for the establishment and organization of the U.S. G.F. Women's Committee. At present, there is a great need for a broad program for the development of women 1 s competitive gymnastics, which would be administered by gymnastically qualified women physi cal educators. The D.G.W.S. and the U.S.G.F. together have developed a national compulsory competative program for three ability levels. TheU.S.G.F.has also formulated a broad program consisting of six major plans to inc re as e the quantity and quality of competitive gymnastics in all parts of the country. Therefore, the purpose of the Women 1 s Committee at this point will be to bring to the attention of phys ical educators in the country, the national competitive program. The U. S .G .F. has divided the nation into eight regions. Letters were sent to known interested women in each of these regions . From this mailing has bee n es tablished a list of women who are interested in helping i:o promoi:e 1:he na i:ional program. The U.S .G .F. Women 1 s Committee will consist of three executive positions, six standing committee chairmen and eight regional chairmen who will serve for a two year term. The following U.S.G.F. Women's Committee executive positions were established and women appointed: Chairman - Shirley Bryan Vice Chairman - Judy Hall The following national stand~g committees were established and chairmen appointed: Committee for Judges Training Clinics: Sharon Wilch Competitive Compulsory Committee: Sharon Pirkl

It is our desire and intention to increase the quani ty and quality of gymnastics for girls in the United States. Due to the fact that our country is very large, the problem of communication is a large one and a real draw back in trying to meet our objectives. We would like to know where programs in girls gymnastics are now being conducted and to what extent. READERS ••• PLEASE RESPOND! GIVE US A REPORT ON ANY PROGRAM NO MATTER HOW SMALL AND UNKNOWN OR LARGE AND WELL KNOWN.
