BREAKFAST

NUTRITION FOR PERFORMANCE

Wake-up: Your body has been fasting for up to nine hours. The origin of the word breakfast stands for "breaking the fast." Start your morning off with a good breakfast that includes a good source of carbohydrates. Cereal, juice, toast, fruit, milk and rice (yes, rice), are all good choices to start the day. You should also include a protein source like eggs, but d on't completely forget the carbohydrates. Your brain carmot use protein or fat for energy, and it's important to feed those brain cells when you first wake up! Don't forget, too, that your body needs WATER. Drink at least 8-12 oz of water before you head out the door.

This is important to know because the kinds of carbohydrates you eat can affect your energy level. Foods with carbohydrates can be rated or judged by what is called Glycemic Index (Gil. It is not important to remember what GI stands for, but it is important to understand what it does. Foods that make your blood sugar rise very quickly are rated as having a high glycemic index or GI. If your blood sugar rises quickly, this will cause a hormone called insulin to be released, and this hormone will lower your blood sugar levels very quickly. For some people they may end up feeling tired and sluggish. There are good and bad times to eat high GI foods. It is good to eat high GI foods after practice. This is because high GI foods will quickly restore the carbohydrate that you've used during practice. It is bad to eat these types of foods right before practice. Doing so may make you feel tired and sluggish. Below is a list of high, medium and low glycemic index foods . Try to eat high GI foods right after practice, and medium GI foods right before practice.

SNACK

If you have afternoon practice, what you eat is critical to how you'll

Your body's blood sugar levds are probably starting to drop a little, and you might be hungry. This is a great time for a snack.lf you're in school, try and pack something that is portable and easy to eat when you have a break. Fruit is nature's fast food! It is also packed with nutrients and fiber. For variety, always eat a snack that includes two foods from two different food groups. Remember, the more variety you have in your diet the more nutrients you'll eat (and the less boring your diet will be!)

feel once you hit the gym. Because you demand so much of your body, you have to pamper yourself with good healthy foods. Be selfish with your food choices. Picking fresh foods and staying away from foods that are processed are your best bet. Fresh foods come packed with the good stuff like vitamins, minerals and fiber. Processed foods usually have tons of preservatives, a lot of salt, very few vitamins and minerals, and they're usually loaded with saturated fats, which are not healthy for your heart.

Below are some better alternatives for some favorite processed foods:

The 2001 Trampoline and Tumbling National Championships crowned national champions in trampoline, synchronized trampoline, power tumbling and double-mini at the Freeman Coliseum in San June 7-9. 2000 Olympic altern earned his fifth n;l~inna

The J.O. National Championships for Trampoline and Tumbling included more than 1600 athletes representing 170 clubs in levels 5-10, all age-groups. The competition took place in San Antonio, Texas, in conjunction with the 2001 Trampoline and Tumbling National Championships. The future looks very promising for the trampoline and tumbling program. Please visit the USA Gymnastics web site at www.usagymnastics.org for complete results. The Trampoline and Tumbling Program Committee voted to keep levels 510 at National Championships through 2004. An interesting feature of Nationals 2002 is the addition of a competition for the level 10 regional teams. The regional champion in each age-group will face its counterparts from other regions to name the regional team champions. SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER

WID,

It's a

WID, TEN.D CLASSIC

501 BLUES

Just imagine grips that fit with the comfort of your oldest, most faded jeans-from the first swing. Consider baby suede padding , NEW SOFT SWING blue foam insert for those who need a little extra softness , a distinctive wrist strap and you have a 501 BLUES. Most gymnasts want a grip that's soft and easy to break in . They also want them to be durable. The 50 I does this better than any other grip on the market AND they do it with style and good pricing.

The TEN. 0 CLASSIC is the most durable grip on the market. We know - our customers talk . Of course, it takes longer to break-in The CLASSIC grips because of the low stretch factor of the heavy duty leather. In fact, in recent independent laboratory tests the TEN.O classic leather was compared to the leather_in other popular grips and was-found-to withstand 18% greater pulling stress. If you are a hard training, big trick gymnast who doesn't like her grips to stretch or doesn't like to buy grips frequently we recommend using THE CLASSIC. Literally thousands of gymnasts do! You will love the baby suede padding, the custom designed webbing for a fresh new look, and the new soft swing insert .

Designed and manufactured with assistance from National Team Coaches, the Just Right by Gibson is the newest idea in Ladies Uneven Bar Grips. The Just Right is cut slightly narrower for great contact with the bar and reduces side to side rolling of the grip for athletes with smaller hands The single buckle design assures a firm, tight fit at the wrist, and eliminates the constant adjustment necessary with velcro strap grips.

WOMEN'S U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS continued from page 2S

MEN'S U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS continued from page 28

Although originally disappointed she couldn't compete with the seniors, Kristal was thrilled with winning her third junior all-around title. coach Donna Strauss from Parkettes said, "I'm ecstatic that Kristal rocked . It's been a rocky road since she injured her knee at the 2001 Pontiac American Team Cup in March. She was rough going into the U.S. Classic and she really put 100% into every workout going into this meet in order to be prepared." Kristal, who trains in Allentown, Pa., and is also coached by Bill Strauss, Robin Netwall, and Joe Stallone, also won the beam title scoring a 9.525. Kristal said, "It feels great, exciting, amazing to have done so well. This was a tough competition for me because I wanted to do my best. Training has been very intense and we tried to hit every set leading up to this event." World Olympic Gymnastics Academy in plano, Texas grabbed second through fourth place in the all-around. Hollie Vise, 13, maintained a consistent showing throughout the two days of competition finishing second all-around with a 72.525. Coached by a team of Evgeny Marchenko, Natasha Boyarskaya and Tatyana Schegolkova, Hollie said, "It feels really goad to be second. My goal was to be in the top three. The first day I fell on beam so I came back strong during the second day." Carly Patterson, 13, finished third all-around despite a rough day one of competition where she was in 12th place all-around . "I did well today," said Carly after the final day of competition. "I went back to the gym on Friday and tried to hit everything. I think I had a little bit of nerves on Thursday." Carly finished second on beam complete with her round off, back handspring, Arabian double front dismount! Kaitlin White, 14, had to skip last year's National Championships due to injuries but made up for lost time this year finishing fourth all-around and second on vault and Aoar. "Kaitlin wi ll be a very strong competitor," said her coach Marchenko. She had elbow surgery last year, then won the WOGA Classic, then had knee surgery in February." Brown's Gymnastics Susan Jackson, 14, toak fifth all-around, improving her 19th place finish from last year by 14 spots. Susan is from Houston, Texas, and coached by Debbie Kaitchuck. Coach Kaitchuck was pleased with Jackson's performance, especially since she was recuperating from a leg pull. "She pulled it off," said Kaitchuck. Parkettes Tia Orlando, 13, finished sixth all-around in her first U.S. Championships appearance. Coach Strauss said, "I' m so impressed by the job she did. She's definitely got a shot at 2004 a nd she's just going to get better!" Tia, from Souderton, Pa., also won Aoar with a 9.350 and some very powerful tumbling and strong dance. "I thought about winning Aoar," said Tia. "That was my goal. I was so happy when I hit." Jordan 5chwikert, sister of 2000 Olympian and 2001 Senior National Champion Tasha, finished seventh all-around in her fi rst U.S. Championships appearance. "My goal was to make the National Team and I accomplished what I wanted to accomplish . I' ll go back and continue to work hard." Jordan trains with her sister at GymCats and is coached by Cassie Rice. Sarah Curtis, who turns 14 on Sept.19, from American Elite in Corvallis, Ore., won vault with a score of 9.475. Houston Gymnastics Academy's Jamie Henderson took second all-around and said, "This is my first time at Championships and it was a great experience. I' m training for the 2004 Olympic Games." Zach Roberts, who tried to qualify as a senior but finished 20th all-around, toak third in the junior competition. lach is from Mission Valley YMCA and coached by Steve Bucher. Rounding out the 16-18 year old team included: USOTC's Charlie Jones, Tim Daggett's Steven Gaudette, Mission Valley YMCP:.s Michael McNamara and Colorado Training Center's Gerry Signorelli. Davis, who started tumbling at age 5, will begin college at Northern Illinois University in the fall but still plans to train at her gym, Gymnastics Academy of Rockford . "It's only about 45 minutes away so I plan to continue training," said Davis. Other medals for the U.S. came in the Team events. Moving up from fourth place in prelims, the Men's Tumbling Team took the bronze medal in the team final , with a combined score of 108.3. Gold went to Russia with a score of 113.5, while South Africa took silver with a 110. Members of the U.S. Men's Tumbling Team are Brad Davis, Frankie Hartman, Chris Helton and Jared Olsen. The Men's Double Mini Team also took bronze in the team event. The team stood in third place after preliminary action and held on to that spot with a score of 93.9. Other team medals went to Portugal, who scored a 95.2 to win gold and Spain, scoring 94.2 for silver. Members of the U.S. team are Derrick Aldrich, Keith Douglas, David Ford and Josh Vance. In other tumbling action, Frankie Hartman, 18, of New Orleans, Louisiana took fifth in the Men's division . This was Frankie's first experience at the World Championships, where he scored a 71 .1 in the final round . Medalists in Men's Tumbling were Denis Serdioukov, Russia, 77.3, gold; Nicolas Fournials, France, 74.8, silver; Levon Petrosian, Russia, 72.8, bronze. USA's Keith Douglas, 24, of Grand Rapids, Michigan scored 62.9 in Men's Double Mini to narrowly miss a medal in fourth place. Competitors from Portugal took gold and silver, while a Brazilian took the bronze medal. In Women's Double Mini , Dede Mogavero, Lubbock, Texas, took fifth place with a score of 59.6, while Tara Sewell, Shallowater, Texas, took seventh, scoring 42.1. The Women's Double Mini Team made a good showing, taking fourth place in the team final with a score of 92.3. Medals went to Russia, 93.8, gold, Portugal, 92.9, silver, and Australia, 92.7, bronze. In addition to Dede and Tara, Erin Smith competed on the U.S. team. Ryan Weston of Chubbuck, Idaho and Jennifer Parilla of Lake Forest, California represented the USA in trampoline. It was a disappointing day for Weston, who began with a good compulsory routine (18th after compulsorie_s), but ran into trouble on the optional, completing only three skills. Parilla stood 19th after the compulsory round . She had a chance at making up some ground with her optional, but landed the last skill on the pad. She still finished 19th in a field of 51. Rounding out the eight member Senior National Team were

Stefanie Croyle from RhythmAex in Maryland; Danielle Lord from Westside Gymnastics in Oregon; Jacquelyn Jampolsky from MRGTC in California; Masha Krakovskaya from Los Angeles School of Gymnastics in California; and Traycie Dohzen, also from Los Angeles School of Gymnastics. In the junior competition, Lisa Wang took first all-around with a score of 85.850. Wang, who turns 13 on Sept. 24, is cooched by Lana Lashoff at Rhythmic Gems in Glenview, III. During event finals, Lisa won the ball and ribbon events and was second in clubs and third in hoop. Cooch Lashoff said, "Lisa came to our gym two years ago and had never done rhythmic gymnastics. Her family moved from Wisconsin where she was taking beginner artistic gymnastics classes. We showed her what rhythmic gymnastics was all about and she began competing as a Level 6. She won every meet that she entered. From Level 6, I took a huge risk and went straight to Level 9. Lisa took second at Level 9 Championships and proceeded-to Level 10. She qualified to-Nationals last year where she took lOth. This year she won the East and West qualifiers and the Junior National All-Around tiHe." An amazing story how Wang fell into rhythmic gymnastics and in two short years became Junior National Champion. When asked what makes Lisa so special, Lana said, "She's very focused and hard working. She's only 12 but she's very mature for her age. She's also a very strong competitor-the harder it gets the more she rises to the occasion. I've had champions before but she is unbelievable. She works 5-6 hours per day, five days a week. When she's in the gym she works at 100% effort and doesn't waste any time." The gool for Wang this year was to finish in the top three. Lashoff said, "She went above and beyond our expectations. I'm on cloud nine. She's a pleasure to cooch and I'm very proud of her." Brenann Stacker from Illinois Rhythmics was second all-around with a score of 84.900. Stacker, 14, is cooched by Irina Vdovets, Natalia Klimouk and Caroline Hunt. Stacker's best score of the allaround competition was for her ball routine, where she scored a 21 .275. During event finals, Stacker won the clubs event and was second in ball and third for her ribbon routine. Aline Bakchaiian, 12, finished in third all-around with a score of 84.250. Aline trains at California Academy of Rhythmic Gymnastics in Los Angeles and is cooched by Olga Morozova. Just behind Aline was Kristin Kaye, 13, from Illinois Rhythmics, who finished fourth all-around and won the hoop event. Rounding out the eight member Junior National Team were Caitlin Trainor from Illinois Rhythmics; Veronica Khrustalev from Isadora Rhythmics; Rebecca Miller from Illinois Rhythmics, and Julia Ilkina from California Rhythmics. BODY BALANCE continued from page 11 Don't forget yom fluids. Yom body, by weight, is about 65-70% water. Yom muscles by weight are almost 75% water. If you are thirsty, you are probably already dehydrated. Most gyrrmasts do not drink enough water dming practice. You should try to drink 8 oz of water at least for every hom of practice. The best way to measme is to fill yom water bottle before practice with the amount of water you'll need.

t

How much you need depends on how long you practice. For example, if your practice is 3 ~ hours long ... 8 oz x 3.5 hours

= 28 oz of water

So make sme you drink yom entire 28 oz water bottle by the end of practice.

DINNER Remember, this is a good time to include foods out of that high glycemic index list. Your body is craving to replace the carbohydrates you just burned at practice. These high GI foods will replace that energy most effectively. Make sme you try and eat dinner as soon after practice as possible. Try to eat within 30 minutes of finishing practice, and no longer than 2 homs after practice-any longer and yom body will have a harder time replacing that burned carbohydrate. Don't forget foods with protein, like chicken, fish, beef, milk, and eggs. A hard workout causes muscle tissue to break down, and a diet without enough protein will keep muscles from being properly rebuilt.

It is important to make good nutrition choices. But part of making good choices and taking a healthy approach to eating is to treat nutrition like a marathon, not a sprint. Let's face it.. .we all have cravings for things that might be salty, sweet, and downright fattening. Many athletes mistakenly make what they think are "perfect" food choices. These choices, which tend to be no-fat, no sugar, lowcalorie and not-much-of-anything-else, actually rob you of two things: foods that are packed with essential nutrients and foods that satisfy the cravings that we all have. If you make good, smart food choices 90% of the time, allow yourself during that other 10% of the time to indulge a little. This approach will take you much farther and create a healthier, long-term ou~ook to a balanced diet.
