PACIFIC ALLIANCE The U.S. earned a total of 48 medals at the Pacific Alliance Championships in men's, women's and rhythmic gymnastics. All three disciplines won both the junior and senior team titles. Plus Tasha Schwikert and Paul Hamm grabbed the allaround titles for the seniors and Hollie Vise and Lisa Wang earned the junior all-around titles.

JUNIOR OLYMPIC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS WOMEN The Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships took place in Landover, Md., May 3-5.

JUNIOR OLYMPIC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS MEN San Diego 2002 was an exceptional experience for the Junior Olympic Men's National Championships.

WOMEN'S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS The 2002 NCAA National Championships was held April 1820 at the University of Alabama. The host Crimson TIde took full advantage of the home arena to secure its fourth NCAA team title. Olympian and UCLA gymnast Jamie Dantzscher became the 2002 NCAA all-around champion followed by Alabama's Andree' Pickens and Utah's Theresa Kulikowski.

LISA WANG WINS AT PACIFIC ALLIANCE Lisa Wang began rhythmic gymnastics just four years ago and she's already earned the all-around title at the 2001 Rhythmic Championships in the junior division and recently took first all-around and first in every event at the Pacific Alliance Championships!

USA Gymnastics continues to work diligently in preparation for upcoming events on the road to the 2004 Olympic Games. The following report highlights the many activities happening at the national office and ways that you can get involved.

International Success 1 am very proud of our recent success in the international arena throughout all five disciplines. First of all, congratulations to the men's, women's and rhythmic teams that represented the United States at the 2002 Senior Pacific Alliance Championships. We won a total of 48 medals including six of six possible team gold medals and four of six all-around medals. Additionally, the U.S. women's team earned seven medals, including the team and all-around gold, at the Puerto Rico Cup in San Juan. These are incredible accomplishments that make a strong international statement as to the current status of our programs.

I'm pleased to report that the U.S. group earned the silver medal in the ribbon competition at the Tournament of I1iana in Sofia, Bulgaria, in their first international competition as a group. The team also finished fifth all-around and fourth in Rope & Ball against such countries as Bulgaria, Greece, Japan, Brazil, Spain and Canada. As you receive this issue, they will be competing in New Orleans at the Rhythmic World Championships, the fust time the event has ever been hosted on U.S. soil. The group trains at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center and I commend them for their work ethic over the past several months. If you are unable to attend the event, make sure to catch it live on HDNet, which is Channel 199 if you have DIRECTY.

2002 U.S. Championships and Congress By now your plans should be set to attend the 2002 U.S. Championships and Congress next month in Cleveland. Few lower bowl seats remain at the Gund Arena for artistic competition, so call Ticketmaster at 216-241-2121 or log on to ticketmaster.com to reserve your seats. Competition will be exciting across the board as all disciplines will be represented.

2003 World Gymnastics Championships The kickoff for the 2003 World Gymnastics Championships is taking place August 22 at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. 2002 Trampoline and Tumbling World Cup USA Gymnastics is proud to be hosting a Trampoline and Tumbling World Cup, August 24-25, in Greensboro, N.C. This prestigious event is the last of six qualifiers to the World Cup Final in November in Germany. Almost 125 athletes are expected to compete including Olympic champions Irina Karavaeva of Russia and Dmitri Poliaroush of Belarus and 2000 U.S. Olympian Jennifer Parilla and 2000 Olympic Alternate Ryan Weston. National Gymnastics Day August 24 should be marked on your calendar for the fourth annual National Gymnastics Day! It is the source for the latest National Gymnastics Day information including how to get involved with the Children's Miracle Network, a great way to promote your gym in the community while taking part in a good cause. oturday morning is the best time to find Tasha and Jordan Schwikert at home - it's their one day away from the gym and school. On this Saturday, the sisters are preparing a birthday lunch for their mother, Joy and her twin sister, Jill. They have three hours to prepare. Jordon is getting impatient with Tasha and wonts her older sister off the phone and focused on the details. Tasha figures they have plenty of time to whip up the refried beans, rice, guacamole and tostados. Tasha takes a minute to tell her little sister to chill out. Jordan's main concern is the preparation; she wants time to get it right. But, Tasha gets a thrill from the pressure of performing when it matters. Tasha tells Jordan not to worry. The tale of the tostados tells their story-they may share clothes and friends but Tasha and Jordan Schwikert do not approach life or gymnastics in the same fashion . Their coach at Gymcats in Las Vegas, Cassie Rice says, "Tasha has never had a lack of confidence in her entire life. Jordan is better at the day-to-day grind at the gym ." Tasha knows her confidence at performance time is her greatest strength, "Every time I compete, a little light bulb goes on in my head. I could have the worst warm up but then I get this adrenaline rush and I feel confident. I don 't hear anyone when I'm competing ." Well, she did hear that one person, who yelled "I love you Tasha" just before her beam dismount at the Visa American Cup, but Tasha kept her cool, performed a clean dismount and became the 2002 Champion . Fittingly, 17-year-old Tasha entered the international gymnastics scene with dramatic flair at the 2000 Olympics when she replaced the injured Morgan White . She was in the unenviable position of starting for the team but her confidence never faltered at her first world-class event. Her scores helped Team USA finish fourth. In just two years, Tasha has gone from the alternate to Olympic veteran, the National Champion and a World Team Bronze Medallist. And yes, she likes it.

When you have a teammate with confidence and credentials it can be a blessing . But how does that work when that teammate is your big sister? Fifteen-year-old Jordan explains, "Some people ask me a lot of questions about her and I don't mind , but if she wasn't an Olympian, would they still come up to me? I don't think of her any differently than I did before. I'm not rude to her but I don't bow down to her because she's an Olympian ." While she respects her sister's gymnastics, Jordan knows she will not be a clone of Tasha, "I love the competitions, I love the challenge but I'm opposite of Tasha . I don't naturally do well. I have to train well first or I'll fall allover the place and not compete welL" Tasha and Jordan competed together as seniors for the first time this past March at the American Classic. They cheered for one another during their routines but there wasn't much pre-meet talking or connecting, "We act more like teammates than sisters at meets,' says Tasha, 'because it wouldn 't be a great atmosphere, it would be too personal. . .too soft, we've got to be ready to compete ." Jordan agrees, "We wish each other luck but I get sort of nervous. I don't want to talk and don't want anyone to talk to me. I keep focused. " Whatever their formula, it worked . Tasha won the American Classic and Jordan placed third. The one-three Schwikert placement was attention getting but Jordan didn't think it was quite up to her standard , "I was happy with my performance but I could have done better. " Now, some little sisters might have been content with that placement but not Jordan . In August, Jordan will compete in her first Nationals as senior and Tasha will have the opportunity to defend her title-it's a chance for both gymnasts to make a statement. "Tasha hates losing and Jordan is very competitive." Cassie Rice says, "They are both used to being on top," But the sisters don't think it will ever be very competitive between the two of them . "I'm happy that Jordan and I both picked gymnastics because it brings us

closer when we are having bad days, but I don't think we'll ever be THAT competitive," Tasha says. ·We understand it's you against the equipment. You do yours and I'll do mine: If the Schwikerts both make a World Championships or Olympic Games team, they will be the first set of sisters on a U.S. team since Doris and Ingeborg Fuchs in 1956.

home between school and gym. "We don't discuss gymnastics at home. There's no special treatment for #1 in the nation here," Joy says. And maybe that is what keeps the sisters so level headed because at the gym Cassie Rice treats them the same way, "they are regular teenagers who realize they are making a sacrifice giving up their weekend time .. .. but we keep them grounded here. I still expect them to take out the trash ." •

like most siblings, the Schwikerts don't always have twentyfour hour patience with one another. A long day in the gym, difficulty with a new skill and one wrong look from your sister and that's it. Cassie Rice has coached both athletes for 10 years and knows all their behaviors-Tasha calls Rice her "second mother." Cassie describes them with a laugh, "They both can get into moods and the funny part is when one of them is doing some 'undesirable behavior' the other one will be the first to notice, 'why is she acting like that? Sometimes they have to be separated." Even when delegated to their separate corners, the sisters respect one another a great deal. Tasha is proud of her sister and really likes Jordan's beam, "Her mount is the coolest thing. I like her aggression and the way she attacks the skills." Jordan faced a bit of a challenge working on her floor routine. According to Rice, "Jordan wants to be the opposite of her sister. Jordan didn't want to show off her floor as much as Tasha." Jordan explains, "1 have a different personality than Tasha. Her floor is really cool, the first pass is amazing and everybody gets into it. But I have a different personality, she's outgoing and I'm focused on my tumbling pass, sometimes I forget to show off the dance. I'm working on it." Their mother Joy enjoys the fact that both her daughters are doing so well. "Jordan knows how good Tasha is and will give her credit but Jordan's work ethics are better than Tasha's so Tasha better watch out! Tasha doesn't want Jordan beating her." It is a very real possibility that one day; the sisters could be in a battle for the National title. But as Mom points out, "Everyone can't be number one." Tasha and Jordan like spending their free time at the mall shopping. Clothes are a big item-Jordan says she picks them out and then Tasha wants them too, they recently saw "Spiderman" together, but neither one of them reads much, "we both hate books," Jordan says. They don't share a bedroom but Jordan hangs in Tasha 's room where they'll discuss all the little details about competitions . Tasha drives them around in her navy blue Sebring, "Tasha wanted a Jetta but fully loaded it was too expensive. I found the Sebring on the internet, " Jordan says and adds the best part of having an older sister is getting driven around . They both attend Centennial High school, Tasha is a junior and Jordan a sophomore. They tried home schooling but missed the social life and being in class. like most gymnasts, they have a long day-waking at 5:00 a.m ., attending classes for five hours and training six hours. Their parents work the night shift as dealers at Caesar's Palace so they see Joy and Warren when they stop " • A

The Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships took place in Landover, Md. at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex, May 3-5. Many thanks to the host club, Rebounders Gymnastics Center, for hosting such a fabulous competition. Congratulations to Region 1 and Region 8, who tied as overall team champions! Also, congratulations to the top four in the all-around in each age division who qualified to the 2002 Junior Olympic National Team and are invited to attend a training camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in August!

Co-meet Directors Steve Butcher and Tim Klempnauer and the local hosts from Mission Valley YMCA and US Gymnastics Training Center ran a first class event! The Opening Ceremonies were emceed by "1 984 Golden Boy" Peter Vidmar with a special guest performance by 1996 Olympian and San Diego native John Macready and World Sports Acro Medalists Arthur Davis and Shenea Booth. Jen Yev Coleman, 7, is the levelS Alaska State Champ in on~ her fourth meet. She placed first on bars, beam and floor and took second on vault. In January she hod the honor of going to Juneau, Alaska to watch her coaches, who are also her parents, Dan and Jana, participate as Torch Bearers in the 2002 Salt lake Crty Olympic Gomes. The 2002 NCAA National Championships were held April 18-20 at the University of Alabama's Coleman Coliseum . As host team, the Crimson Tide took full advantage of the home arena, boisterous fans, and consistent gymnastics to secure its fourth NCAA team title. Last year, the Alabama squad competed at the national meet minus their top allarounder, Andree Pickens, who was lost to a season-ending Achilles tendon i nj ury just five days prior to the competition. The result was a fourthplace finish. This season, with Pickens back in the lineup and the championships being held on their home floor, it looked promisi ng for the Alabama squad-but disaster struck again . In the warm-ups prior to the preliminary session, Alabama senior all-

arounder Reagan Tomasek suffered ankle injuries while vaulting and had to be scratched from the lineup. For the second year in a row, the Tide would compete short-handed at nationals. But this time, it would not be enough to keep 'Bama from securing the coveted title. Despite the loss of a top allarounder and a tough field of competitors, the Tide started strong and remained that way, hitting 48 of 48 routines in the two sessions to bag the title. Defending national champion UCLA came to this year's final touted by many as the favorite, but perhaps a little suspect, as the Bruins had lost two of last year's top all-arounde rs-Mohini Bhardwaj to graduation and Kristin Maloney to injury. Last season's second-place team,

Georgia, also sported significant losses of key personnel from last yea r's lineup and labo red under significant injury problems during the regular season . While last year's No. 1 and No . 2 teams appeared to have weaker lineups, Alabama, Utah, Nebraska, and Michigan all looked to be bringing stronger squads. And to boot, the improving programs at LSU, Florida, Stanford, and Oregon State, along with the surprisingly strong emergence this season of Arizona and Minnesota, this year's nationals had all the ear-markings of a "Battle Royale."

PRELIMINARY SESSIONS In the first of two preliminary sessions, Utah (196.775), Georgia (196.650) and Nebraska (196 .575) advanced to the Super Six final over Michigan (196.175), LSU (195.850) and Arizona (195 .850). Michigan had to count a fall on bars in rotation one, and this miscue proved costly as the Wolverines failed to make it into the Super Six final for only the second time in the last nine seasons. In the second preliminary session Alabama (197.300), UCLA (197.100), and Stanford (196.050) qualified to the final round over Minnesota (195.700), Florida (195.675) and Oregon State (192.925). The Stanford Cardinal qualified to the NCAA Super Six session for the first time ever.

SUPER SIX In the first rotation, UCLA opened with an earLy lead (49 .375) on bars, featuring scores of 9.90 from Jamie Dantzscher and Yvonne Tousek. Georgia foLLowed closely with a 49.250 team total on vauLt. Utah finished with a 49.125 on floor, and the Nebraska Corn huskers hit six for six on beam but posted onLy a 48.750 for their effort as the judges on all events seemed to start the Super Six session cautiously. ~ University of Alabama secured its fourth NCAA team

In rotation two, Alabama made its first appearance. When the Tide's first competitor received a score of 9.75, the partisan Alabama crowd roa red its disapproval. What followed were big floor scores as the Crimson Tide gave the judges little to be critical of and were well rewarded for their performances. At the end of the session the Tide had racked up 49.425 and an early edge on the field. The UCLA Bruins managed a 49.150 on the beam which would ultimately stand as its lowest total on any event. Utah vaulted to a 49.175, and Stanford recorded a 48.925 on bars. In rotation III Alabama senior Andree Pickens nailed a dazzling Yurchenko layout full, and sophomore teammate Jeana Rice also landed a Yurchenko layout full for a 9.90. Alabama kept the pressure on with a 49.325 team vault score. Georgia answered with a 49.325 of its own on bars with 9.90s from Chelsa Byrd, and Cory Fritzinger. Paced by an exquisite floor exe rcise (9.90) from sophomore Richelle Simpson (beautiful layout double back, front full-front lay, and ending with a front half through to a piked double back), Nebraska managed a respectable 49.175. Meanwhile,

Stanford went six for six on the rail, featuring a 9.925 performance from sophomore Lise Leveille (front on to an immediate cat leap, back handspring, layout, layout, wolf 3/4 and a double back dismount) for a team beam score of 49.00. At the mid-point in the meet Alabama had opened a slim lead over a very tight field : Alabama-98.750, Georgia-98.575, UCLA-98.525, Utah98.300, with Nebraska and Stanford tied at 97 .925 each. Georgia was the top producing team in Rotation IV, achieving 49.375 points for solid beam work, capped by Cory Fritzinger (back handspring, back handspring, two-foot layout/front handspring-back gainer layout, and a double-full dismount) fo r a 9.95 . UCLA's remarkable floor performances, featuring a stunning 9.95 effort from eventual floor co-champion Jamie Dantzscher, only rated a 49.3 from the judging corps. Utah's bars set (49.300) was highlighted by a 9.95 from junior Theresa Kulikowski (beautiful uprise to handstand with a half, giant full to piked Jaeger, uprise to handstand full, Tkatchev, giant half to toe-on flyaway half off) and 9.9s from senior Shannon Bowles (uprise to handstand with a full turn , giant full to Tkatchev, giant full to tucked double back off) and sophomore Veronique Leclerc (hop full, Tkatchev, nailed layout double back dismount). Neb raska stayed close to the pack with a 49.075 vault effort. As the fifth rotation began, the Crimson Tide held a slight lead. The Tide responded to the pressure admi rably with a 49.45 on the bars, highlighted by a 9.95 performance from Pickens (Hindorf, high Tkatchev and a nailed full in dismount) and a score of 9.90 from Tiffany Byrd. Utah closed the gap on the Bruins with a 49.35 on the beam, behind a pair of 9.95s from both Shannon Bowles (front on, back handspring, layout, back handspring, pike jump full, double full dismount) and Kulikowski (press to handstand mount, back handspring, back handspring , layout, front aerial, switch leg leap-stag ring leap, cartwheel-layout gainer full off the side dismount). The Utes, however, ended the competition two tenths behind the Bruins at 196.950. As the final rotation began , Alabama was still in the driver's seat. To win the NCAA 2002 title the Crimson Tide needed two things: a minimum of 48.975 to overtake the Bruins, and to not be outscored by Georgia (by .25). Their prospects appeared promising , but they were finishing on beam, and the scenario of closing out the national championship on beam has been the undoing of many contenders in years past. The Tide proved up to the challenge, however, hitting six for six routines without so much as a wobble. In fact, by the time continued on page 43

The Level 9 Eastern National Championships (Regions 5-8) took place in Kissimmee, Fla., April 27-28 and was hosted by Orlando Metro Gymnastics and EGO Booster Club. The Western National Championships (Regions 1-4) took place in Rapid City, South Dakota the same weekend and was hosted by Just Jymnastics and Gym Stars Booster Club. The events were a great success!

SUCCESS IN BELGIUM! The USA Gymnastics Sports Acrobatics program sent a delegation of 2 1 athletes, four coaches, and two officials to Puurs, Belgium to attend the Intemational Acro Cup, Puurs. The competition , which took place Apri l 12 -1 3, included more than 300 athletes from 10 countries. In the senior women 's pairs competition the U.S. showed its strength by bringing home the gold and the silver medals! Clare Brunson and Olivia Solo from Empire Sports Acrobatics in Riverside, Calif , earned the gold medal whi le Brittany Horrell and Marie Annonson from California Acrosports Team in Sacrarnento, Calif. , earned the silver medal. In the senior women 's trios Samantha Schabow. Holli Morris. and Danielle Heider (Empire) eamed the bronze medal wh ile Heather Downs, Tami Annonson, and Sabina Knight-Yuponce (CAT) finished sixth . Unfortunately the women's trio of Aimee D'Hondt, Amanda Harris, and Megan Nickerson from Aerial Tumbling and Acrobatics in San Jose, Calif. had to w ithdraw from t~ competition due to an injury in training .

Kassi Price, 12, from American Twisters captured the allaround title in the 12th annual Puerto Rico Cup scoring a 36.684 and defeating Caroline Molinar of Brazil. USA teammate, Katie Kivisto, 16, also from American Twisters finished third in the all-around with a score of 36.266. The competition that was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico and included athletes from 15 countries. The gymnasts are coached by Tim and Toni Rand . The third member of the USA team, Brittney Koncak from Harris Unlimited Gymnastics, was forced to withdraw from the competition due to an injury she incurred during training.

In their first intemational competition the senior mixed pair of Laura Fitzsimmons and Jeffry Lee (ATA) finished in fourth place missing the bronze medal by only 0.17 points. In the junior women's trios, Holly Middag, Mackenzie Prewitt, and Natalie Miller (Empire) finished in eighth place while Kelly Patton, Robin Stevens, and Candace Bedell (ATA) finished 13th.

ust four years ago Lisa Wang probably had no idea what rhythmic gymnastics was all about or what to do with rope, hoop, ball, clubs and a ribbon . That has all changed!

my teammates on the trip and we were able to support each other and have fun together. I was surprised to win everything. I just wanted to go in and be consistent."

Amazingly, Lisa began rhythmic gymnastics at age 9, just four years ago. In this short time, Lisa has moved up the ladder quickly. In fact, she was crowned Junior National Champion in 2001 and also won titles in two events, ball and ribbon.

When asked what's unique about Lisa, coach Lashoff said, "She's a great competitor. She amazes me. At the Pacific Alliance Championships there was a lot of hard work, it was a tough trip and she just nailed her routines. She was very calm and collected. She's very goal oriented and focused. It's a wonderful ability to have at a young age."

When asked how she got started in rhythmic gymnastics, Lisa's mother Cindy said, "I was working during the summer and needed to find a sitter for Lisa during the day. Lisa didn't want a sitter so we looked for something she could do instead. We heard about a rhythmic camp, which took place from 9-3 daily. I didn't know anything about the sport but I enrolled Lisa and she loved it!" Lisa, now 13, is a rhythmic gymnast from Buffalo Grove, Ill. where she trains at Rhythmic Gems and is coached by Lana Lashoff. Lana speaks highly of her gymnast. "Lisa's very focused and hard working . She's also very mature for her age. It seems the harder things get the more she rises to the occasion ." Lisa recently took first all-around and won every event at the 2002 Pacific Alliance Championships held in Canada. Competing in only her third international competition, Lisa said, "It was really fun . There were so many of

This is Lisa's last year as a junior and she would like to keep her title at the 2002 Rhythmic National Championships. Coach Lashoff said, "Lisa works very hard from the time she steps into the gym until the time she leaves. Most kids you have to push but this one we have to slow down from time to time." This seventh-grade student works out five days a week for 5-6 hours each practice. She has about a 40 minute commute each way from her home to the gym but she makes good use of her time by doing homework. Lisa is t he daughter of Ping and Cindy Wang. She has one brother Jordan, who is 6 years old. Lisa's favorite subjects in school are reading and math . She may be interested in journalism and/or media in the future. Her goal in rhythmic gymnastics is to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games.

Alabama had won its fourth NCAA national title by chalking up a 49.375 on beam in the final rotation . Georgia's 49.300 on the floor was enough to secure second place, an admirable accomplishment for a battle-scarred Gym Dog squad. UCLA held onto third place (197 .150). Utah settled into fourth (196.95). Nebraska's remarkable 49.45 on bars put the Huskers in fifth, while Stanford ended its first-ever trip to the Super Six with a 49 .075 on vault for 196.025 points and a sixth-place finish. The remarkable Super Six session ended with no team being forced to count a single fall.

Olympian Elise Ray succeeded in capturing the first national championship on beam for the University of Michigan gymnastics program. "I had no expectations coming into tonight," stated Ray. "Our team was pretty disappointed that we weren't on the floor yesterday, and sitting in the stands was something that put it into perspective for all of us." Nicki Arnstad fulfilled a goal of hers by claiming a share of the NCAA floor championship for LSU after a 9.95 performance. Arnstad, a four-time AllAmerican, performed a triple full at the end of her first pass, added a front handspring, front full, front pike in her middle pass, and put an exclamation point on her efforts with a pike double back in the last pass of her highly charged routine. UCLA's Dantzscher added a share of the floor championship to her vault crown for the evening. Dantzscher's exube rant routine that opened with a double layout and ended with a double tuck drew a standing ovation from parts of the crowd. "Tonight was really exciting. This is my first time competing all-around three nights in a row, and my body is really tired. I'm half dead right now, but I made it through ." Dantzscher's three individual titles this year are the most by a gymnast in a single year since Jenny Hansen of Kentucky won four in 1995.

The United States Air Force Academy won its second-consecutive national women's team title with a championship-record score 194.150 at the USA Gymnastics Championships hosted by Springfield College. Texas Women's University finished second with 192.950, followed by the University of California-Davis (192.80) and Seattle-Pacific University (192.20) as .650 separated second through fourth place. Juniors Jennifer Dougherty and Kim Broughton of the U.S. Air Force Academy shared the individual all-around championship with a score of 38.875. On the men's side, defending national champion William & Mary repeated as champion. The Tribe, which scored 208.575, held off second-place Cal-Santa Barbara (207.875) and third-place Navy (207.825). Host Springfield College recorded a season-best 202.000 to finish fifth for the second consecutive season. Navy senior Dan Finnegan won the all-around competition, compiling a score of 57.875.

It was HOT, HOT, HOT in Houston. Rhythmic J.O. National Championships took place May 3-5 in Houston, Texas. More than 126 athletes competed in three days of competition which included Group and Individual. A team of six Level 7 and six Level 8 athletes from each Region competed in this team competition. The top four scores of each apparatus from each level composes the team score. Region 1 placed first for the third year in a row with Region 4 in second place. Region 5 was very surprised and excited to find themselves as the third place team. Thirteen groups competed in the Intermediate and Advanced divisions. U.S. Rhythmic Group Team Earns Silver Medal in Bulgaria The u.s. rhythmic group team eamed the silver medal in the ribbon competition at the Toumament of Iliana in Sofia, Bulgaria, May 25-26, their first-ever intemational competition . The meet served as preparation for the 2002 Rhythmic World Championships, July 1214, in New Orleans. The team finished fifth all-around and fourth in Rope & Ball. Competitors included Bulgaria, who swept the competition in all divisions, Greece, Japan, Brazil, United States, Poland, Canada, Spain and South Africa, who finished 1-9, respectively.

Memmel Wins All-Around Title The USN8elgium Friendship Training Camp and Competition was held May 11 at the Karolyi Gymnastics Camp in Texas. The competition was the culmination of a week-long training camp exchange with USA and Belgium . Chellsie Memmel, who tumed 14 on June 23, led the USA team with an impressive all-around total of 37.375 as the USA captured the Team title over Belgium. Memmel trains at Salto Gymnastics in Waukesha, Wis., and is coached by Jim Chudy. Seventeen-year-old Brittany Koncak and 14-year-old Allyse Ishino were second and third in the all-around with scores of 36.700 and 36.425 respectively. Koncak trains at Harris Unlimited Gymnastics in San Antonio and is coached by Michael Harris and Ishino trains at Charter Oak Gliders in Covina, Calif., and is coached by Steve and Beth Rybacki.
