30 National Gymnastics Day 2004 National Gymnastics Day brings together millions of young gymnasts to celebrate the sport and promote physical fitness. Many gymnasts across the country celebrated the sixth annual National Gymnastics Day on August 7, just a week before the kick off of the Olympic Games. For the second year in a row Gymnastics World of Broadview Heights, Ohio, raised the most among the clubs. In addition, Gymnastics World's Meghan Sweeney was the single largest fundraiser.

The end of the calendar year brings with it a time to reflect on this season's accomplishments and an opportunity to make resolutions regarding the next steps to be taken as we move forward into the next quadrennium.

The final resolution by the Court of Arbitration for Sport recently dismissing the case of gymnast Yang Tae Young, and upholding the results of the men's all-around final from the 2004 Olympic Games reaffirmed Paul Hamm as the Olympic champion. USA Gymnastics, in attending and presenting at the hearing, supported Paul's case that he did absolutely nothing wrong in winning the gold medal, fair and square, on the field of play. The CAS not only agreed, but in dismissing Yang's case, the CAS also stressed that Paul's conduct after the controversy arose was exemplary. Paul put it best when he stated that he now feels as if he has won the gold medal three times - in Athens, in the media, and now in the courts.

I recently attended the 75th a.Jmual FIG General Assembly in Antalya, Turkey, Oct. 22-24, along with several representatives of USA Gymnastics. This meeting occurs once every four years after the Olympic Games and is the hub for influencing change in our organization. It was announced at the FIG meetings that the Judges Course planned for late 2004 will be postponed while the committees review the new Code of Points. The judging courses are rescheduled for late 2005 with the new Code of Points going into effect in January 2006. In other gymnastics news from the General Assembly, we should all be thankful to USA Gymnastics' members Jay Ashmore, George Beckstead, Pat Henderson a.J1d Jackie Fie, who recently completed their terms on various volunteer committees with the FIG. A special thank you is extended to Jackie Fie, who is re tiring from volunteer work after 28 years with the FIG, the last 12 of h er term as president of the WTC. All of them served our sport in a true selfless manner and we a re all indebted to them for their accomplishments during their tenure. I'm also pleased to almOW1Ce that both Ron Froehlich, USA Gynmastics Chairman of the Board, and I were elected by our international peers to FIG governance committees. Ron will continue as the auditor for the FIG and I have been elected as a new member of the Executive Committee. In addition, our own Tonya Case was elected to the Sports Acro committee. In related news, Sports Acro will change its name to Acrobatic Gynmastics a t the start of the year to keep in line with the FIG. I know Ron and I as well as Tonya look forward to our work with the FIG during the upcoming quad. Once the chaLk dust had settled and the medaLs were distributed at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, it was time for the ceLebration to begin with the T.J. Maxx Tour of Gymnastics Champions. The tour wiLL visit 42 cities in aLL and wiLL showcase the phenomenaL gymnasts from the 2004 OLympic Games.

What better way to showcase the u.s. athLetes, who won a totaL of nine Olympic medaLs, then to tour the country and perform to Live audiences. Appreciative fans are Lining up at venues across the country for a gLimpse of their favorite OLympic hero. T.J. Maxx is sponsoring a program called Behind the Scenes at each tour stop where spectators can ask questions and hear what the OLympians have to say. This program is a big hit as 1996 OLympian John Macready moderates the question and answer session. The most popuLar questions peopLe are asking are aLso the simpLest ones:

When and how did you get started it aired in September and showed highin gymnastics? Are you ever scared lights from the Games as well as the tour of a trick or routine? What is your production. The tour is very well received favorite event? How did it feeL to and is keeping our gymnasts and the sport win an Olympic medaL? of gymnastics in the headlines months past The Olympians are enjoying the attention they're receiving while on the tour-with kids screaming their names and asking for autographs. It's so nice to see these elite athletes relaxed, smiling, having fun and enjoying the results of years of hard work and dedication! The first three shows were set to kick off in Florida, but the hurricane weather concerns prompted the shows to be postponed until the end of the tour in November. If you didn't get the chance to watch the show in person, perhaps you caught it on NBC when

the Olympic Games. The tour allows the fans to get to know the athletes a little better and see them up close and personal. These athletes on tour all started off in the sport of gymnastics just like you -- moving up the ranks of the sport. Who knows, maybe the next Olympic Champion is sitting in the stands watching the T.J. Maxx Tour of Gymnastics Champions and is dreaming of winning the gold! Here are a few shots from the road and what our athletes have to say about the tour ...

Performing on tour is so much fun . I love getting out there in front of the crowd and just having fun with gymnastics. And it's nice to have group dances and get to perform in that aspect as well. The best part of the tour is getting the crowd into it and the excitement you get from them.

The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens was a great success. The men's and women's gymnastics teams earned an amazing nine Olympic medals. The athletes have gained much attention since they've returned from the Games. Perhaps you've seen them on a television talk show, in national publications, on a cereal box, in the newspaper, or in person at a tour stop. We caught up to the gymnasts and asked them about their Olympic experiences. Here's what they had to say.

Q: A:

Tell us about your top three moments at the Games? It was one of the best experiences of my life. I'll

remember it forever! My top three moments were 1) winning the all-around gold 2) winning the silver medals in team and on beam and 3) staying in the Olympic village.

What has been the biggest thrill for you since you returned from the Games?

Being a presenter on the MTV Video Music Awards. I got a gift bag for being a presenter and it included a ton of cool stuff! Another thrill was being on the cover of the Wheaties box. There were so many great athletes at the Games and they only chose three. I also got to go on several television talk shows.

How does it feel to be the Olympic Champion?

What are your gymnastics plans for 2005?

To go to the World Championships. I'm just going to see how things are going after the tour.

I have a few classes left to earn my

h t are your future goals/plans?

I haven't really talked about that yet. I'm a junior in high school. I want to go back to public school next year, but we'll see how it goes. I heard that you would like to get into singing. Can you fill us in?

I've sung ever since I was little. My dad is a singer. I've always loved singing. I want that to be my next career. I haven't had any formal training but I would like to take some classes. My agent told me that I'm scheduled to record a song in December - they want to see how I sound and we'll go from there.

I'lL return to Ohio State in January to finish my college education. I'll also continue training, in addition to all of the eve ts an appearances tha are on my plate. What advice do you have for all the kids who say they want to be the next Paul Hamm? Never give up!

Tell us about your top three moments at the Games?

Winning the silver medal in the team competition was very special because it was my fi rst Olympic medal. My come back in the allaround and the medal ceremony was something I'll never fo rget. I'm also proud of my silver medal on high bar especially under such difficult circumstances. It was the dream of a lifetime made real.

Regarding the all-around controversy and after the CAS hearing announcement that found you would keep the all-around gold medaL, how did you feel? I'm proud to be the men's allaround gold medalist. This process has been difficult but it's something I had to deal with and I'm glad it's over. I think this medal will be more special because of all the things I had to go through. USA GYMNASTICS

The T.J. Maxx Tour of Gymnastics Champions is a blast. It's nice closure after the Games to actually perform under less stressful situations. What are your future plans?

What are your school plans fo r 2005?

What has been the biggest thrill for you since you returned from the Games?

My top moments in Athens were 1) winning the silver team medal and being up on the podium and 2) fini shing my beam routine in team finals and making it. What has been the biggest th rill fo r you since you returned fro m the Games?

The Leno Show because I watched it all through college and it was fun to actually be on it.

How did it feel to win the silver medal in the team competition?

A medal in general ali he Olympic Games is just life fulfilling . It definitely makes it allt orthwhile.

What are your gymnastics plans for 2005? Will you contin I e competing in the sport?

Depending on if my body lets me, I'm planning on doing the 2005 World Championships.

My experience was great. We got the opportunity to be a part of something very few people get to experience. First, just being able to say I was at the Olympics. Second, competing for the best country in the world and third, meeting all the different athletes and learning about their sports. What are your gymnastics plans for 2005? I will be attending and competing for the University of Alabama. I will leave for Alabama the day after Christmas because our first meet is January 7. As far as elite gymnastics, I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. What will you study in college? Right now I want to study psychology and private investigation studies. I have so much pride representing our team and bringing home a medal for the first time in 20 years. 1) Standing on the podium after winning the silver medal. 2) Competing in the all-around and getting in the top three after five events.3) The feeling when I was done competing!

Standing on the podium receiving an Olympic medal was my number one moment. Number two waS being able to meet all the othel " athletes in the Olympic Village. Number three was being alille t finish the competition even though I had an injury.

We left for Athens on my 30th birthday. The best part for me was first just making the team, since things didn't look so good at the beginning f the year. It was also great 0 sh re the moment with my dad ho has been to almost every mee of mine for the last 10 years.

What has been the biggest thrill for you since you returned from the Games?

A: I'm going to get back into the gym after the tour and hopefully compete at Winter Cup and maybe American Cup if I'm invited. The ultimate goal is the 2005 World Championships.

What are your gymnastics plans for 2005? How is your injury?

A: For now, all I'm thinking about is the tour and finishing that up first, but I would love to have one more year of world competition before going to college and doing gymnastics there. My injury in my hip joint was just weird. Now that I've given it some rest and used crutches for about three weeks it feels great!

What are your school plans for 2005 and beyond?

A: My school plans are to go back to my high school second semester to finish off my senior year. I would like to go to the University of Georgia and be a part of their gymnastics team with my sister, Ashley.

Spending time with family. I've spent the last eight months away from my wife and daughter (age 2) so it's great to spend time with them. We'll be moving to Hermosa, Calif., in December, where I plan to open a gym with my friend Jim Foody. What are your gymnastics plans for 2005? I'm planning to have another surgery on my left shoulder. My shoulder has just progressively gotten worse so I'm going to have surgery to get it fixed. I'll go through rehab and continue training. To win the silver medal has been more than a dream come true. I always wa nted to go to the Olympics, but to win a medal is something I never dreamed of.

I have to get a second MRI on my right wrist. Then hopefully train diligently for American Cup, Championships, and World Championships.

Right now I'm focusing on the tour and making each show as good as I can possible make it. I have not ruled out competing next year; time will tell.

What advice do you have for all the kids who say they want to be the next Courtney McCool?

Girls who say they want to be like me, I suggest setting realistic goals, then--dream it, believe it, do it!

How often do you get to see your wife and son while on the tour? How olm is your son now? Will he follow in his dad's footsteps of being a gymnast?

What plans do you have for the holidays?

My plans for the holidays are spending time with my mom, sister, and brother. Then for Christmas my mom, sister, and I are planning to go somewhere warm in the U.S. and relax for a few days.

The first leg of the tour was the hardest. I was away from Alisha and Tyler for over 25 days. My son Tyler is 20 months old. He's already a little gymnast, but I will support him on how far he wants to go in gymnastics. I love gymnastics, and believe it defines character.

Frustration can arise when your child struggles to achieve a balance between academics and innate talent development. If you've reached this point, you're searching for educational options. Your concerns are understandable.

You may be considering homeschooling. If so, here are answers to questions you might have: How does homeschooling work? Methods and programs vary greatly, from purchasing curricula and working independently to enrolling in a program with full teacher support (online or text). Choose what feels right for you. If working independently, you should create a portfolio of completed work with outlines for each course. Working within a program, this process should be facilitated for you. Is there a specific plan? There is no best plan. Schools offering individualized learning style profiles, skills assessment, and placement will guide you in choosing the course of study best suited to your child. An internet search using the words "homeschooling," "distance learning K-12," or "independent study" garners thousands of links. Shayla said, "1 decided to homeschool because gymnastics of my schedule. 1 tried going to middle school for a little while, but it was tough coming in late and leaving early, and 1 had no time to make up the work 1 was always missing. Jana said, "When I arrived in Florida from Germany 1 started at a private school in first grade and left after ~ fifth grade. Carly Janiga, 16, finished ninth all-around at the 2004 Olympic Trials. She's a junior at Saguaro High School which is a public school. She said, "1 don't take as many classes as other students. You're supposed to take six and 1 take four so that 1 can get out at 12:00 and come right to gym. 1 get Charter School credit for doing dance and weight lifting plus 1 also have to take a correspondence course which gives me the credits I need. I train 30-35 hours per week. I home schooled last year when we were pushing for the Olympics but it just didn't work out for our family so I decided to go back to public school.

Junior National Champion Nastia Liukin, 15, goes to a private school in Texas called Spring Creek Academy and she's in the 10th grade. "This school really helps me with my gymnastics and the heavy travel schedule that I have," said Nastia. "My schedule is gymnastics from 8-12, then school from 12:30-3. After school 1 go home and do my homework until it's time for gymnastics from 5-8. After gym I finish all of my homework that I didn't have time to do in the afternoon."

ational Gymnastics Day brings together millions of young gymnasts to celebrate the sport and promote physical fitness. Many gymnasts across the country celebrated the sixth annual National Gymnastics Dayan August 7, just a week before the kick off of the Olympic Games. USA Gymnastics Clubs raised more than $129,000, this year alone, for the Children's Miracle Network. USA Gymnastics is celebrating its fourth year of partnership with the Children's Miracle Network and, in that short time, has raised more than $350,000 to benefit local children's hospitals.

"Meghan is very dedicated and just a wonderful kid," said Ron. He added, "She lives a little over an hour from the gym and has nearly perfect attendance at gymnastics practice. She went door to door in her neighborhood, went to businesses in the community and contacted family and friends. Everyone who donated to Meghan received a hand written thank you note from her. She made time in her busy schedule to do something nice for others." Gymnastics World, as well as Meghan Sweeney will be featured on the 2005 ational Gymnastics Day poster. For the second year in a row Gymnastics World of Broadview Heights, Ohio, raised the most among the clubs with a total donation of $16,100. Ron and Joan Ganim are the owners of Gymnastics World. We asked Ron how he's able to motivate his gymnasts to earn money for the Children's Miracle Network and he said, "Each week we have a sports psychology class for about 30 minutes with small groups of team gymnasts. We cover many issues during these sessions from fear, to nutrition, to time management, as well as other topics. We also talk about being a good person. We ask our team gymnasts to take a little time out of their life to help others less fortunate than themselves. We have 196 kids on team and we ask them to go out and obtain a minimum of $50 to benefit the Children's Miracle Network. Our gymnasts go door to door in their neighborhoods, call family and friends and do a great job raising money for this worthy cause." Meghan Sweeney a Level 8 from Gymnastics World in Broadview Heights, Ohio, is the single largest fundraise!; having collected $3,097.47 for the Children's Miracle Network. Sweeney, 13, said, "My family and I asked a ton of our friends to donate for the Children's Miracle Network. We told them about all the kids and how the money would go towards their surgery and care. One of my mom's really good friends donated $500 and I also received donations of $200 and $100."

KASSIDY STAUDER Palmerton, Pennsylvania Kassidy is a member of the Parkette Notional Gymnastics' team. During the 20032004 season, Kassidy competed as a Level 8 winning 5 out of 8 all-around titles and 11 individual event titles. She was named the Pennsylvania State All-Around champion in the 8-11 year old age group with on overall score of 37.675.

The 2004 Women's Jr. Olympic National Team and their coaches were invited by USA Gymnastics to a training c~p August 19-23 ~t the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Spnngs. Thanks agam to Tom Forster and Gary Gonzalez of Colorado Aerials for inviting the team to train for three days at their facility. National Jr. Olympic Committee Chairman Tom Koll was the Camp Director, assisted by Connie Maloney, USAG Women's Jr. OlympIc Program Manager. This year's staff of experts provided a wealth of knowledge and new drills for the athletes and their coaches. Medals to Kick路off Fall Competitive Season

World Cup Competition La Serena, Chile, Sept. 9-11. Carly Janiga, Marcia Newby and Liz Tricase started the fall competitive season with a World Cup competition in La Serena, Chile, Sept. 9-11. The athletes, all of whom participated at the Olympic Team selection camp, competed in the Copa La Serena event, which was an event finals competition only. Quali fication rounds began on Sept. 9, the top 8 performed on each event Sept. 10, and the top three competed on Sept. 11, where the fina l results were determined.

The National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/ Women (NACGC/ W) sends you greetings and hopes that this issue of the USA Gymnastics magazine finds you all getting back into the fall swing of things after the excitement of a historic Summer Olympics! This is one of the most exciting times of the year for prospective student-athletes (PSAs) in both their junior and senior years of high school. As of September 1, high school juniors are allowed to communicate with college coaches in writing-both email and letter writing. If you have an interest in college gymnastics this is the time of your career when you should be making the list of schools that interest you, sending them letters letting them know of your interest and passing along pertinent information about you (address, birth date, email, telephone, fields of interest, academic record, gym experience, etc). It is also a good time to send a preliminary video that should include one or two competitive routines on each event from last season and some footage showing what skills you're working on in the gym and reasonably close to competing.

If you're a senior, this can be a very exciting and confusing time of year. The early signing period (the first time PSAs can sign a National Letter of Intent) is in early November but some gymnasts have already made decisions and commitments. If you do "sign early" for a full athletic grant-in-aid, you have a one year com mitment from that university to pay for your tuition, school fees, room, board, and gymnastics-related expenses. It is a one-year contract renewable at the discretion of the

head coach-there is no such thing as a four-year scholarship commitment according to NCAA rules!

If you're a senior looking for a scholarship and don't find yourself with the scholarship offer you'd hoped for yet, don't despair! The late sign ing period starts in early April, which means you could have an amazing senior season and attract lots of attention in the spring from schools that still have scholarships available (many schools decide to hold a scholarship or two for the late signing period for a variety of reasons). If you're a senior and not a potential scholarship athlete, we really hope you'll still consider participating in gymnastics during your college career. There are hundreds of gymnasts who have amazing and life-changing experiences as non-scholarship athletes at Division I, II and III schools. Remember that participating in college athletics is one of the best ways to develop your potential as a leader and make a difference in the world after graduation.

The U.S . Junior Women went up against the juniors from Canada in a dual meet Oct. 11, in Houston, Texas, at the U.S. women's National Trai ni ng Center. USA easily won the dual meet with a team score of 113.5 to Canada's 104.6. Shayla Worley of Orlando Metro took first all-around and won bars, beam and floor; while Bianca Flohr of Flytz finished second respectively in the same events. Natasha Kelley of Brown's finished third and Kassi Price of Orlando Metro took first place on vault and fourth all-around. Morgan Evans (Excalibur) and Samantha Peszek (DeVeau's) competed exhibition for the USA and tied in the all-around. The USA named its Pan American Championships Team: Shayla Worley and Kassi Price (Orlando Metro), Bianca Flohr (FLYTZ USA), and Natasha Kelley (Brown's Houston). Worley was replaced by Evans at the Pan American Championships due to an injury. Also, Jana Bieger attended the camp but was injured prior to the competition .
