USA Gymnastics hosted its second World Cup competition in trampoline and tumbling in Lake Placid, N.Y., at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Kalon Ludvigson and Susannah Jolmson both won their first World Cup medals when they claimed bronze medals in men's and women's tumbling, respectively.

gymnastics Gel Ready for a Big Summer!!!!

Summer is just around the corner, and what a tremendous season it's shaping up to be with lots of gymnastics, gymnastics, and more gymnastics. The Junior Olympic National Championships take place in spring and summer for Men, Women, Rhythmic, Trampoline and Tumbling and Acrobatic Gymnastics. Good luck to all of the athletes and coaches involved with the JO National Championships, which is the culmination for your hard work and dedication in the sport. One year out from the Olympic Games is always an exciting time for USA Gymnastics. All of the athletes and coaches are keenly aware of the need to be in tip-top shape and position themselves at their very highest level. This year is no different as USA Gymnastics prepares for a busy and exciting summer season. Athletes in all disciplines will have a chance to prove themselves at the national and international levels. The Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro will be the first test as the gymnasts in men, women, rhythmic, and trampoline compete against the best from North and South America. Wildcard positions in the Olympic Games are often on the line with victories at the Pan American Games. The Visa Championships in August will serve as a tremendous proving ground for the convergence of both up-and-coming and veterans when many age-eligible juniors step onto the senior stage for the very first time to compete for the title of national champion. We are expecting big crowds in San Jose because ticket sales and Congress registrations are already ahead of pace. The World Championships for artistic, rhythmic, and trampoline and tumbling are not far behind, and athletes in all disciplines compete to qualify our country for the Olympic Games in 2008 . This summer is about more than competitions. We hope you will join with us in our drive to reach $1,000,000 on behalf of the Children's Miracle Network by August 2008. The Tyson Fitness Challenge is the program through which we encourage you and your club to support this valuable cause while also increasing the awareness of fitness among America's youth. All of the po erhouses in the sport were present and accounted for, with tfie exception of 2004 Olympic Champion Anna Dogonadze from Germany, who is injured. Senior Trampoline Program Director Ann Sims said, "The athletes made this event outstanding due to their high level of competition. I was very pleased that the u .S. athletes won two medals and finished high in other diSCiplines as well. 1'd also like to thank the Olympic Regional Development Authority and the U.S. Olympic Training Center for helping with the organization of this outstanding competition." 2006 U.s. tumbling champion Kalan Ludvigson of Cedar Lake, Ind., and 2007 Winter Classic tumbling champion Susannah Johnson of Roanoke, Va., both won their first World Cup medals when they claimed bronze medals in men's and women's tumbling, respectively. "I definitely did a lot better in finals than I did in prelims," said Ludvigson, who finished behind China's Wang Jiexu, who won the gold medal, and Tagir Murtazaev of Russia. "In the finals, I did everything I planned to do. I was a lot more confident and training went a lot better." "It's definitely exciting," said Johnson, who placed behind Russians Anna Korobenikova and Alina Yarullova. "It's terrifying being with all of these girls who have done it for so long because they're so good. I did not expect to place at all, so I'm really excited." Ludvigson, who qualified to finals in fourth place, earned a score of 74.40 to earn the bronze medal, while Wang and 10

Russia went 1-2 in women's tumbling with Korobenikova, the reigning tumbling world champion, in first with a score of 69.80, followed by Yarullova at 67.90. Johnson scored a 64.80 to place third in women's tumbling. After prelims, Johnson said, "I was very excited for my second pass because I'm one of only two people in the world throwing that big of a skill in the middle of my pass-a full-in tuck-and so my adrenalin was pumping like crazy." Other event champions were: 2000 Olympic trampoline champion Irina Karavaeva of Russia, women's trampoline; 2004 Olympic trampoline champion Yuriy Nikitin of the Ukraine, men's trampoline; Tetsuya Sotomura and Yasuhiro Ueyama ofJapan, men's synchronized trampoline; and Karen Cockburn and Rosannagh MacLennan of Canada, women's synchronized trampoline. Karavaeva won the women' s trampoline gold medal with her 38.60. Cockburn was second with a 37.90, followed by Zhong Xinping of China in third at 37.60. USA National Trampoline Champion Erin Blanchard of Lafayette, La., who qualified in fifth place going into finals, placed seventh with a score of 35.60. Sims said, "We were very happy that Erin made trampoline finals. This was a tough field of competition and it shows she's on the right track." A U.S. women's team of eight gymnasts and their coaches traveled to Lisburn, Northern Ireland, for a Friendly Dual competition with Great Britain, March 17-18.The U.s. women earned 15 of the possible 16 medals at the competition, including the team title by scoring 238.50 to Great Britain's 218.10. USA Gymnastics Vice President of Programs Kathy Kelly said, 'The purpose of th is trip was to provide the first year seniors with a full team competition, including the rigors of international travel, and-to prepare them for important upceming eveflts, includingthe Pan American Championships and the World Championships. The girls did an excellent job and competed at a very high level and showed consistency throughout the competition ." Shawn Johnson won the all-around with a score of 60.150, followed by Shayla Worley with a 59.650 and Samantha Peszek with a 58.650. In the all-around, the USA swept the top seven spots! During event finals, Peszek grabbed two gold medals on vault (14.900) and floor (14.900), and a silver medal on beam (15.35). Worley won her favorite event, bars (15.450),

and Johnson took top honors on beam (16:050) and earned a silver medal on vault (14.750) . Peszek led the u.s.Team's medal haul at five, with three gold, one silver and-one bronze. Johnson was-a close-secona-with- fO "'u-'-'r- - - I (three gold and one silver) to her credit. Worley garnered three total medals (two gold and one silver). All eight of the USA team members earned a medal, showing the depth of the strong USA squad. 2006 World Championships team silver-medalist Natasha Kelley earned a silver medal on bars (15.200), while Bianca Flohr grabbed the bronze (14.650). Ivana Hong won the bronze medal on beam (14.850), while on floor, Hilary Mauro won the silver (14.850) and Bridget Sloan claimed the bronze (14.650).

Bridget· Floor. The first day of competition was better than the second day, but it was still good. Ivana· Beam. The first day of competition was the best because it was the most solid. Natasha • Bars.We've made some changes to my bar routine that Ireally like. Ithought Idid well on it both days. Shayla • Bars. It was my best routine because Ihit all of my elements and won both days. Sam· Beam. Ishowed Icould hit beam under pressure both days and Igained a lot of confidence from the experience. Shawn· Beam. Ihad been working really hard all week so Icould perform as well as Iwanted, and Iwent out there and just had a blast.

Hilary· Floor. It was my best routine. I won the silver medal in finals. Q:What did you learn from this trip that you hope to be able to use at a later team competition? TE ASSISTANT COACH AND U.S. MEN'S onal Team member Kevin Tan, 25, of Fremont, . ., won the still rings title at tl1e French International World p - Bercy-Paris in Paris, France, March 18. Teammate Sean send of Houston won the silver medal on high bar. Tan, who trains with the Penn State team and is a member of Team Chevron, entered the finals as the favorite after finishing at the top of the pack in the qualification round with a 16.250. In the finals, he posted a 16.475 to clinch the World Cup event title. Venezuela's Regulo Carmona was second with a 16.225, followed by France's Danny Rodrigues at 16.200. Also in the field was 2004 Olympic silver-medalist Jordan J ovtchev, who finished fifth. Tan said, "It was great winning the gold medal. I took third in the World Cup in Stuttgart last fall and this was the first World Cup of the season this year. It's good to know I'm right in the thick of things on rings." He added, "I changed my rings routine completely from last year. I restructured and added more difficulty. Last year I was at a 16.9 start value and now I'm at a 17.3 start value. In the high bar finals, Townsend, 28, scored a 15.150 to finish behind 2004 Olympic champion Igor Cassina of Italy, who won witl1 his 15.400. China's Teng Haibin was tlilld at 15.050. Townsend, who trains at Houston Gymnastics Academy, improved on his qualification performance, where he was fiftl1. Townsend said, "The competition was great. It was my fifth time competing in the French International. I'm happy witl1 taking a silver medal. The best part of the trip was seeing Kevin Tan win a gold on rings against such a strong rings final." In the qualification round, Joey Hagerty of Albuquerque, N.M., who trains at tl1e U.S. Olympic Training Center and is a member of Team Chevron, finished in 11 th place on the floor exercise witl1 a 15.175 and 15th in the horizontal bar with a 14.500. Other men's champions at the event include: Marian Dragulescu, Romania, floor exercise and vault; Teng, pommel horse; and Feng Zhe, China, parallel bars. t3

Maybe it's the little brother or sister of a competitive gymnast, or friends of your family with a child who is not involved in gymnastics. Or maybe it's a young soccer or basketball star looking for additional training to keep him or her in top form.

so What eHaetlY is the TYSOn FitneSS Challenge? The Tyson Fitness Challenge has two goals: helping today's youth get more physically fit and helping kids who are fighting illnesses by raising money for the Children's Miracle Network (CMN). The Tyson Fitness Challenge is an eight-session fitness initiative designed to fit into gymnastics clubs' existing classes.The program encourages physical fitness through fun activities that emphasize four fundamentals of fitness: cardiovascular exercise, strength training, flexibility and nutrition. The program is not about teaching gymnastics skills; it is about using gymnastics to help kid s increase their flexibility, strength and endurance, as well as learn about the importance of a wellbalanced diet.The Tyson Fitness Challenge has beginning, intermediate and advanced exercises, as well as a preschool component.The great thing about this program is that it can be adapted to fit the needs of each club or participant, ensuring that each child reaches his or her goals and has fun while learning the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The culmination of the program is voluntary participation in raising funds for Children's Miracle Network. Since 2001, the USA Gymnastics family has raised a total of more than $645,000, and the goal is to raise that number to $1 million by 2008. ~

AT GYMNIX INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT he USA claimed a total of 12 medals, including three gold, at the Gymnix International tournament, March 17-18, in Montreal, Que. The team included Sarah DeMeo, Corrie Lothrop, Randi Stageberg and Amber Trani. The foursome garnered 171.025 points, finishing second to Russia's 176.425. Stageberg took the senior all-around bronze medal with her 56.725, and Lothrop claimed the junior all-around bronze medal at 56.625. Stageberg won a gold medal on floor and bronze medals on bars and beam during event finals. For the juniors, Lothrop won vault and was third on bars and floor. DeMeo earned medals of each color: the gold on floor; the silver on beam; and the bronze on vault with a 14.625. Stageberg and Lothrop had the USA's highest medal count with five each, both collecting one gold, one silver and three bronze. Next was DeMeo with four {one gold, two silver and one bronze} and Trani with one silver medal. mm~

Without a World Championships in 2007, the World Cup Final is considered the most prestigious international event for Acrobatic Gymnastics this year. In the mixed pair, Solodar and Wee, who are members of the Acrobatic Gymnastics Senior National Team, finished third at 28.320, behind gold-medalist Revaz . Gurgenidze and Tatiana Okuloava and silver-medalist Anton Glazkov and Maria Kovtun, both from Russia. Belarus' women's group of Maria Girut, Tatiana Motuz and Alina Starevich won the women's group title with Russia's Tatiana Alexeeva, Natalia Fedorova and Elena Kirilova finishing second. AVA GEHRINGER WINS MEDAL AT THE FRANCE OPAL CUP

hythmic senior national team member J.U va Gehringer from North Shore Rhythmics in Glenview, Ill., along with teammates Savannah Reynolds from California Rhythms in Los Angeles and Marina Moskalenko from Aviator Sports in New York, traveled to Calais, France, March 31-April1 for the Opal Cup. Gehringer, 17, won the bronze medal in the clubs event finals, competing against top athletes from the powerhouse countries in rhythmic gymnastics including Russia, Belarus, and Israel. Gehringer said, "It was a really nice surprise to win a medal. It was kind of surreal to be honest. I wasn't expecting it at all. I was just going to the meet to get more experience because I'm new to the international scene." The top three in the all-around competition included: Russia's Natalia Pichuzhkina in first with a 68.317, France's Delphine Ledoux in second with a 62.867 and Belarus' Nastya Ivankova in third with a 62.659. Israel's Daniel Falah was fourth with 60.752 followed by Gehringer in fifth with a score of 59.134. Moskalenko finished 13th all-around in the seniors while Reynolds finished ninth all-around in the junior division. i3 34

WILLIAM AND MARY, ARIZONA STATE WIN TEAM TITLES AT 2007 USA GYMNASTICS MEN'S COLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIPS illiam and Mary earned its seventh straight varsity title with a score of 199.85 in the team competition at the USA Gymnastics Men's Collegiate Championships, March 24-25, in Williamsburg, Va. The U.s, Naval Academy finished in second with 198.00 and the u.s. Air Force Academy in third with 191.30. In the collegiate team competition, Arizona State University won the title with a score of 175,60. The U.S . Air Force Academy's Greg Stine won the floor exercise (9.30) and still rings (9.30) titles, as well as the varsity division's all-around crown with a score of 49.55. Navy's Chris Tam placed second all-around with 48.85 points and William and Mary's Derek Gygax finished third with 47.10. University of Washington's Sean Liner won the collegiate all-around title with a

score of 43.85, followed by Arizona State teammates Anthony Naddour and Matt Williams, who placed second at 43.30 and third at 43.10, respectively. The varsity and collegiate divisions were combined for the individual event finals. William and Mary's Andrew Hunt earned his second straight parallel bars title with a score of 8.70. Other individual event champions were: Joe Atzenbeck, Navy, pommel horse (8.50); Dave Locke, William and Mary, vault (8.40); and Isaac Olsen, Navy, horizontal bar (8.95). The varsity competition is for Division I, II, or III, four-year institutions with gymnastics as a varsity sport, while the collegiate team category is for two-y ear or fouryear degree-granting schools with gymnastics as a club sport. i j

TOWSON WINS TEAM TITLE AT 2007 USA GYMNASTICS WOMEN'S COLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIPS owson University claimed its first-ever team title at the 2007 USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate Championships at Seattle Pacific University's Royal Brougham Pavilion in Seattle, April 21. With its score of 195.625, Towson became the 10th school in 13 years to earn the team crown. Tournament host Seattle Pacific finished second with a score of 193.150, while Centenary College was third at 191.675 and 2006 team champion Texas Woman's University was fourth at 191.650. Towson's Christina Ghani won the all-around title with a score of 39.025. Debra Huss and Brianna Schwartz, both from Seattle Pacific, finished second and third all-around with scores of 38.950 and 38.825, respectively. Ghani added two more titles to her all-around and team crowns by winning

vault and tying for first on floor exercise during the individual event finals. Ghani finished with four gold and one silver medal for a total of five medals. Ghani earned a score of 9.8500 on vault and tied with Cornell University's Kari Kucera on floor with a 9.8750. Courtney Arno of Texas Woman's University won the uneven bars with a 9.8250, while TWU's Rachel Zimmerman won the balance beam with a 9.8750. Centenary College's Meredith Smith and Towson's Decelia Willacy were second and third, respectively, on vault. Ghani, Seattle Pacific's Ashley Domres and Temple University's Sarah Liebowitz finished in a three-way tie for second on uneven bars, while Towson teammates Jackie Schweitzer and Christine Logan were second and third, respectively, on beam. Seattle Pacific's Sarah Sullivan was third on floor. ~

Seven-year-old gymnast Morgan Imberman had a vision. She collected 51 gently used leotards from her teammates at World Cup Gymnastics in Chappaqua, NY, and donated them to Jireh Sports, a mentoring ministry in Indianapolis that brings non-traditional sports to youth in underserved communities. The director of Jireh Sports, Vicki Wright, was very touched by Morgan's idea and shared a photo of the Jireh sports gymnasts with thei r new leos. Never underestimate the power of a vision. All of us, no matter how small, can make a big difference!

We talked to Morgan about her great idea and here's what she had to say. Q: How did you get the idea? A: I was trying to think of a good deed and because I love gymnastics sooo much, I decided to collect leotards for those who could use them so that they could see how fun gymnastics is. Q: How did you collect leotards? A: I decorated a box and put it out where I take

gymnastics. I also hung signs up all over the gym and locker room. Q: How did it make you feel to know that you helped others? A: I knew it would make me feel good to give our leotards to other girls who need them, but it made me feel really good when I saw the pictures of them smi ling and

wearing the leotards. Q: How old are you and what grade are you in? A: I just turned 7 and I'm in the first grade. Q: What gym do you train at and what is your level? A: I have been taking gymnastics at World Cup Gymnastics in Chappaqua, NY, for a long time. I am a future Level 4. io'i
