or selection of the men's Olympic Team, the men's program committee weighted the two days of Visa Championships competition as 20% each and the two days of U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Gymnastics as 30% each to determine the final results. Team Chevron's Jonathan Horton, who is from Houston, finished first in the weighted, combined all-around rankings from the Visa Championships and U.s. Olympic Team Trials - Gymnastics, using the formula mentioned above. Joseph Hagerty finished second in the overall rankings followed by Raj Bhavsar in third and David Durante in fourth. Horton also had the highest all-around score during day two of Olympic Trials competition with a 91.650, followed by Durante with a 90.95 and Bhavsar with a 90.20. Alexander Artemev had the highest all-around score during day one of Olympic Trials with a 90.650, followed by Horton with a 90.55 and Bhavsar with a 90.500. The five-man men's selection committee named both Horton
P
and Paul Hamm to the Olympic Team after no athlete met the minimum requirements for automatic qualification, as outlined in the selection procedures. To be automatically named to the team, an athlete needed to finish in the top two in the combined, weighted all-around rankings from the two selection events, as well as place in the top three of six events using the combined results. 'Tve worked my whole life for this, to make the Olympic Team," said Horton, who competes for Team Chevron. "All of these athletes have pushed me to where I'm at today. I was just having fun out there today. I'm more confident with my gymnastics then I've ever been before." 2004 Olympic all-around champion Hamm broke the fourth metacarpal in his right hand on the first day of competition at the 2008 Visa Championships, May 22-24 in Houston, and filed a petition to the Olympic Team, which was accepted. "I have a lot of work to do to get healthy and show the committee I'm ready," said Hamm, who competes for Team Chevron. USA GYMNASTICS JULY • AUGUST 2008

he 2008 Visa Championships was a dramatic demonstration of the depth and talent that resides across the spectrum of rhythmic gymnastics in the United States. Nineteen year old Lisa Wang of Buffalo Grove, III., won her third straight all-around national title with a score of 131.950. After convincingly winning every event gold medal during preliminary competition, she called on her experience and consistency during finals to lock in the all-around gold. Wang, who will enroll full time at Yale University this year, said "I loved being out there .... It was great doing the sport I love. It's an amazing part of my life." After 13 U.s. Senior titles, winning the Pan American Games gold, and representing the United States at three World Championships, Wang announced her retirement upon

the conclusion of the competition. Rachel Marmer of Los Angeles, Calif., earned the silver medal and confirmed her matchless ability to manipulate apparatus and perform the riskiest routines. Ava Gehringer of Evanston, III., shook up the rankings by taking the bronze. She elegantly fought for every element and demonstrated her determination throughout each event. Julie Zetlin of Bethesda, Md., came in fourth after drops overshadowed her beautiful execution and emotional presence on the floor. Rebecca Wallenstein of Jacksonville, Fla., performed intricate routines with extreme flexibility, securing a fifth place finish . Sofya Roytbu rg, Sarah Kudishevitz, and Joanna Arnold ranked 6-8 respectively in a very tightly contested fight to make the National Team. The potential of the Junior National Team proved to all at the Visa
Championships that the United States sits poised and ready to become a force on the world scene in the coming years. Marlee Shape of Buffalo Grove, III., used her consistency and maturity to win her second straight junior all-around title with a score of 122.100. Gabriella Magid of Brooklyn, N.Y. took the silver medal thanks to her clean, perfectly completed difficulties. Eleven year old Rebecca Sereda of Las Vegas, Nev., shocked everyone with the ease and amplitude with which she performed in her first Nationals, and solidified herself as one of the top emerging young athletes. Anastasia Torba, with her physical strength and apparatus technique, and Victoria Syatkina with her infectious expression, came in fourth and fifth respectively. Com ing in at number six was Michelle Milstein, who was arguably the most artistically mesmerizing athlete of the entire compet it ion. Rounding out the National Team was the long and lithe Katherine Scarnechia coming in seventh, and securing the eighth and final spot was eleven year old powe~ house Polina Kozitsky-. i2

The people of Chevron know about being first. Chevron was the first to be designated TOPTIER gasoline by BMW, GM, Honda and Toyota. So it makes sense that Chevron has been, and will continue to be, a proud sponsor of U.s.A. Gymnastics, a team that tirelessly strives for top tier performance. Their success is inspirational and we wish them all the best.
