fter the chalk dust had settled at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, thE'f United States had earned its largest medal total since the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The medal tally of 10 - two gold, six silver and two bronze - is an outstanding accomplishmentl by our athletes and coaches. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games are being touted as the most wa tched Olympics in history. NBC did a fantastic job of providing extensive coverage from beginning to end through the variety of broadcast and internet channels available. The feedback we have been receiving from around the country has been heartwarming, as America certainly became attached to both the men and women who represented USA Gymnastics.

A

In addition to the overall medal count, milestones and highlights included: f • It is the firs t time the USA has won two team medals at two consecutive Olympic Games. The women earned their second straight silver medal, and the men were repeat medalists, this time taking home the bronze. • The U.S. women won eight total medals (two gold, five silver and one bronze), topping China's six (two gold and four bronze). Romania was third with two (one gold and one bronze). The eight medals earned by the U.S. women ties the number of medals earned in 1984. • The women's all-around established two USA firsts: Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson became the first U.S. women to go one-two in the allaround; and it was the first time the USA has won the all-around title for two consecutive Games. • Liukin joins Mary Lou Retton (1984) and Carly Patterson (2004) as the only U.S. women to win an Olympic all-around title. • Liukin tied the USA Gymnastics record of five Olympic medals at one Olympics set by Mary Lou Retton, who earned one gold, two silver and two bronze, at the 1984 Olympic Games; and, matched by Shannon Miller, who claimed two silver and three bronze at the 1992 Olympic Games. Liukin's Olympic medals include one gold (all-around); three silver (team, balance beam and uneven bars); and one bronze (floor exercise). • Johnson is only the second U.S. gymnast to win an Olympic gold medal on the balance beam (Miller, 1996). Liukin finished second, making this the first ' time the USA has won two medals in this event at the same Games . • Johnson earned four medals at the 2008 Olympic Games: gold on the balance beam, and silver in the team competition, all-around and floor exercise. • Liukin garnered the most medals of any female gymnast at the 2008 Olympics with five. Johnson was second with four medals, followed by China's Cheng Fei and Yang Yilin at three (one gold, two bronze). • Jonathan Horton of Houston captured the silver medal on the horizontal bar. • The USA competed in Men's Trampoline for the first time in an Olympic Games. I know you join me in congratulating all of the hard work and efforts from the athletes, coaches, judges and administrators that were involved with thE 2008 Olympic Games. It was a phenomenal effort and hopefully the success w ill be a springboard for building an even bigger base in our wonderful sport oj gymnastics. The bar has been set very high, as a gymnastics community let's continue til work hard to keep up and even exceed this level of excellence! Have a great fall!

In the second rotation, Artemev jumped to 12th after scoring a 15.975 on his Yurchenko 2.5 vault. Horton jumped five spots to 14th with 45.350 points after earning a 16.100 on his handspring double front vault. After four rotations, Horton was 12th with a 60.625 after scoring a 15.275 on parallel bars. Artemev stuck his stretched double double dismount on horizontal bar and scored a 15.075 to move into 14th place at 60.525. In the fifth rotation, Horton earned a 15.350 on high bar for a score of 75.975, and Artemev posted a 14.625 on floor for a score of 75.150. Horton ended the competition on floor, scoring a 15.600. Artemev's crowd-pleasing pommel horse routine that includes a full Kehr to flair sequence earned a 15.525.

H

Individual events orton won the silver medal on high bar. Artemev competed in the pommel horse finals, and Tan was the first reserve athlete for the rings finals, with Hagerty the third reserve gymnast for high bar.

H

During high bar finals, Horton took a chance and performed a new, more difficult routine that he had never completed, even in practice. His routine had a 6.9 start value, up five-tenths of a point from his routine in the team finals. He earned a score of 16.175, just 0.025 points behind the 16.200 of gold-medal-winner Zou Kai of China. Germany's Fabian Hambuechen, the 2007 horizontal bar world champion, finished third with a score of 15.875. "That's the first time I've ever done that routine," said Horton. ''I'm not going to sit here and say it's luck because I've done everyone of those skills millions of times. But it was maybe a little bit of luck to put it together in the same routine at once and do it as well as I did. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, right? I hit the floor and looked at Mark (Williams) and said, 'Can you believe that just happened?' Instantly, I knew I was going to medal with that routine. I kind of wish I had stuck my landing because I'd be gold." On pommel horse, Artemev scored a 14.975 after falling toward the end of his routine. China's )(jao Qin won the gold medal with a 15.875. Croatia's Filip Ude and Great Britain's Louis Smith both posted scores of 15.725, but Ude claimed the silver medal through a tiebreaker, giving Smith the bronze. ta

HeaCi Over Heels for

Gymnast Cassie Whitcomb balances school and athletics beautifully.

Fifteen-year-old Cassie Whitcomb dashes over the mat and leaps high into the air. Twisting her body to arc backwards, she somersaults head over heels, not once, not twice, but three times, finally landing on her feet with perfect poise and a sweet smile.

What's more, each K12 high school course is taught by an experienced teacher who is qualified in his or her particular subject area. Cassie and her fellow students attend online classes, participate in teacher-led discussions, and can always contact their teachers with questions or for extra help.

Just watching Cassie can take your breath away. So can listening to this young teen describe her daily routine. Up at 5:30 am, Casssie's days don't end until around 9 pm, the hours almost evenly divided between gymnastics and school. You won't hear Cassie complain though; she loves both .

In fact, K12'Steachers are one of the best parts ofthe program as far as Cassie is concerned. "I love my K12 teachers:' she says.

A perfect 10 on-and off-the mat A rising high school sophomore who attends school online using the award-winning K12 curriculum, Cassie appreciates both the quality of the lessons and the flexibility that learning online with K12 allows her. A dedicated athlete, Cassie is ranked third in the Junior Division of the International Ladies Gymnastics, and is preparing to tryout for the 2012 Olympics. In addition to practicing 36-40 hours every week, Cassie also travels from her home in Ohio to Texas five days a month for extra training . Every two months, this talented 15 year old attends international competitions in far flung countries such as Belgium and EI Salvador.

K12-Scheduling flexibility plus educational quality When Cassie was ready to start high school, her parents realized that, with this kind of schedule, traditional schooling would be virtually impossible. So they enrolled her in the Ohio Virtual Academy, an online, tuition-free public school that uses the exceptional, engaging K12 curriculum and learn ing program.

liMy Spanish teacher lives nearby and we had a Spanish class outing at a restaurant:' No doubt this is part of the reason why Spanish is Cassie's favorite subject next to science.

Traveling the world and discovering the sea In addition to allowing Cassie the freedom to develop her athletic talent, online learning with K12 allows Cassie to pursue a lifestyle that broadens her horizons. Being able to take school with her when traveling has expanded Cassie's world to include interesting new people, places, and cultures. It's even introduced her to the ocean. Trips to Florida and the West Coast have ignited a passion for the sea in this native of landlocked Ohio-a passion she'd like to pursue as a career. An excellent student, Cassie is hoping to get a college scholarship to study marine biology or oceanography. In the meantime, she continues to leap, fly, flip-and get ready for the 2012 Olympics.

~ ~~~~ ----~~ ~~ id you catch the insert in USA Today on August 15 that promoted the grassroots of our sport? The insert was seen by 3.6 million people. USA Gymnastics, in a joint effort with the National Gymnastics Foundation, has created the sport's first-ever national marketing initiative that targets growing the sport's grassroots base. "This is an important, landmark initiative for USA Gymnastics,"said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. "Gymnastics is a great activity for all youngsters, whether they have Olympic dreams or not, and this effort not only provides national exposure for our sport but also helps parents easily locate a gymnastics club near them. This national marketing effort goes far beyond the impactful advertising insert. To supportthis,USA Gymnastics is launching a targeted Web site, beginheregoanywhere. com, where parents can learn the benefits of gymnastics, find answers to common questions, read success stories and easily locate a USA Gymnastics member club in their community. USA Gymnastics member clubs will receive posters, radio spots and newspaper ads that may be tailored to their local community. Clubs nationwide may strategically place posters and run ads and PSAs in their communities in conjunction with the USA Today insert to create national and local impact. The national exposure, coupled with the local efforts of member clubs, will provide gymnastics with its broadest public outreach effort in our history. This unprecedented campaign is funded through the National Gymnastics Foundation, and the insert is supported by some of USA Gymnastics' sponsors, AT&T, CoverGirl and

Tyson. This nationwide outreach effort is the mingling of recommendations by club owners and an overall marketing initiative that has been discussed over the last several years. One of the individuals spotlighted on the beginheregoanywhere.com website is former collegiate gymnast, fitness champion and current Gladiator, Beth Horn. Beth embodies the tagline, "Begin Here, Go Anywhere." Here is Beth's story! Beth is "Venom" on NBC's American Gladiators. After competing at Ball State University, she began fitness competitions where she continued with her gymnastics abilities. After years of perseverance, she became the National Fitness Champion of 2000. This led her into a professional fitness career, where she became a Weider contracted athlete with the fitness magazines for five years in addition to her personal training career. She wrote a fitness and nutrition book entitled, "The Natural Way-The Holistic Guide To Total Mind-Body, Health & Fitness." We asked Beth a few questions and here's what she had to say: Q: Where did you do gymnastics and what level did you achieve? A: I went to Northwest Turners Gymnastics in Chicago from the age of 7 through high school. I competed in Class III, back when they had Classes I-V & Elite level!

orty-two of the nation's top Gymnastics for AlI,TeamGym squads gathered for the 2008 Group Gymnastics TeamGym Nationals and Gym Fest, June 13-14, at Go For It USA in North Las Vegas, Nev. With more than 400 registered participants, this set a record for the largest ever Gymnastics for All Nationals. To qualify for the TeamGym Nationals, the squads of gymnasts had to earn qualifying scores in state and regional competitions. Local Host, Go For It USA, dominated the competition earning team gold in three divisions (Level B female/mixed, Level C female/mixed, Level C male). Go For It USA also took the silver in Level B female/mixed and Level D. In Level D -- the highest competitive difficulty level -- team Gold was earned by Biron Gymnastics from Houston, Texas with their clean and consistent performance and a wonderful group floor routine. Taking team Silver, the Go For It USA Level D squad set a new standard of difficulty with the mUltiple high level skills demonstrated in the TeamGym Jump event. In view of great advancements in both artistry and difficulty seen in this year's D Level National competition, the Rules Committee will certainly take this 'Look to the Future' into consideration when they meet later this year to update the TeamGym Regulations for the 2009 season. Earning team Silver were the Go For It USA "Power squad" (Level B female/mixed); Biron Gymnastics, (Level C female); Tricks Granite Bay (Level C male); and Go For It USA (Level D). The team Bronze went to Biron Gymnastics (Level B female/ mixed) and Bay State Gymnastics from North Dartmouth, Mass.
