As announced earlier this year, USA Gymnastics' goal is to raise more than $1 million for Children's Miracle Network by the end of 2008. The total amount raised will be announced in the January/ February issue of USA Gymnastics magazine, along with the names of the winning clubs that will receive equipment and the top individuals who will win and trips to various USA Gymnastics events. Nastia was born October 30, 1989, making her 19 years old. She' s an only child who lives with her parents in Parker, Texas. She trains at WOGA in Plano, Texas, and is coached by her dad, Valeri. Nastia competed in her first junior national championships in 2002 and has been a dominant force in the world of gymnastics ever since. This veteran of the sport has competed in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 World Championships and has won a total of nine World Medals including four gold and five silver. She recently earned the all-around gold at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and silver medals in the team, bars and beam, and the bronze on floor. That's a total of 14 World


and Olympic medals. Not only is Nastia a phenomenal gymnast but she's also a really great person as well. Although she's focused and intense at competitions, she knows how to have fun and enjoy life outside of the gym. Some of her favorite things include shopping, eating sushi, and hanging out with friends! We caught up to Nastia in October to learn what she had been up to since the Games and to reflect back on her successful competition in Beijing. Here's what she had to say! What have yo u been up to since the OlympiC Games?

Life has been so busy since the Olympics! I have had so much fun traveling all over the country, meeting different people and participating in very special events. I was in NYC for Fashion Week and got to sit front row in the Peter Som, BCBG Max Azria, and Badgley Mischka shows. I was on Oprah, Leno, The View, and Conan. While I was in NYC I got to see a huge billboard in Times Square with me promoting Vanilla Star Jeans. I was able to get to know Maria Sharapova and she came to our Anaheim tour stop. I have only been home for a few days, so I am looking forward to spending some time with my friends and family. But I am also REALLY enjoying tour! USA GYMNASTICS NOVEMBER 路 DECEMBER 2008

What was it like winning the team silver medal? It was a great accomplishment for Team USA. We went in with really high hopes, especially coming in as the reigning World Champions. So winning the silver medal may have been a little bit of a let down to some people, but I was very proud of the whole team and an Olympic Silver medal! What was it like winning the all-around title? Nothing can describe the emotions and feelings I had when I was standing on the award podium with the gold medal around my neck listening to our national anthem. Hearing my name next to "2008 ALL-AROUND OLYMPIC CHAMPION" gave me the chills. As soon as the med,al was placed on my neck, I spotted my dad in the crowd and he had his arms up in the air. It was a moment I will NEVER forget.

What was it like in the athletes' village? It was a lot of fun getting to meet so many athletes from all over the world. The food was really good--pretty American. We had a big variety. By the end of the three weeks, we were ready to come home and eat home cooked meals. I saw your photo on the Wheaties box, which must have been pretty exciting. What did you think when you first saw the cereal box? I couldn't believe I was chosen to be on the Wheaties box. So many legendary athletes have been on it, so to be included as one of those athletes is a huge honor! How is the tour going? What do you like and dislike about being on the road? The tour is so much fun! I truly get the meaning of "living out of your suitcase." I haven't been home in quite a long time s9 I really miss my family and my own bed. But we have been able to see so many different cities around the country. We've gone to a lot of malls and we just hang out with the whole cast. KSM & Jordan Pruitt are traveling with us as well. Jordan and I have gotten really close, and it's funny how we have only known each other for a few weeks, but we have found so many similarities. It's pretty cool!

How long were you home between the Olympic Games and the tour starting? Did you get to celebrate with your family and friends at home? I was only home for about three days! I had a welcome home celebration and a parade which was amazing! They custom made a pink Saab convertible for me to ride in! After the toU1~ do you plan to go back to training or what are your gymnastics plans? I do plan on continuing training after tour. I will be in France and Moscow for Thanksgiving and I have a show, The Gymnastics & Figure Skating show, on Christmas Eve. I am really excited about that one because I have done it a few times and it's a lot of fun! What are your plans as it relates to school? I am hoping to start school at Southern Methodist University in January! If things are still pretty busy, I can take another semester off. I have always thought that you can't do gymnastics for the rest of your life, but you can ALWAYS go to school no matter what age you are.

Q: Looking back at the Games, how do you sum up the experience? A: As the most perfect experience eve r. It was the best time of my life. As a team and as an individual I had a great time. Now we're on tour and getting to celebrate our success and it has been so much fun. Q: Tell me about winning t he team silver medal? A: It was great. I mean we gave ou r best. We had a few mistakes and China had the better meet. They had the gold in their hands. If we would have hit I'm sure we would have won but we deserved the silve r and we took it and we're proud of it. To have any Olympic medal at all is a great honor. Q: What have you been doing since the Games? A: I've been on Letterman, Leno, Op rah and Ellen shows. Those were all amazing. I got to be a guest in the show the Secret Life of an American Teenager Finale. That was hard to do. Q: Why was that hard? A: It was awkward and embarrassing. I've never had to do that before, but it was cool. Q: How long did you

have to rehearse for that appearance?

A: I was in and out within an hour and a half so it was pretty quick. Q: Who did you meet and who was cool? A: I got to meet all of the characters like Ricky, Grace and Taylor. They were all my age and they we re very welcoming to me. They invited me to come back to be on the show. Q: Anything else that stands out to you? A: I also did the Democratic National Convention and the Frosted Pink with a Twist that aired on ABC in October. Q: What are you doing about school while on the t our? A: I'm taking this semester off because the tour is so long and hectic. We don't have time for homework and stuff. I'll go back in December or January.

Q: Are you going to continue training after the tour? A: Definitely. Right now my plan is to go for another one . I mean I'm taking it one day at a time. Q: Do you have more goals in the sport of gymnastics? A: It's hard to say right now after just finishing . I hope to just stay happy in the sport and if I go for another Olympics it will be to get more medals.

SAMANTIIA PESZEK Q: What has life been like since the Olympics? A: Life has been very different than what I'm used to. I've gone on the Oprah show, been recognized at the Fever and Colts game, and gone to a reception at the governor's office. I also did the Frosted Pink with a Twist show, visited the White House, doing some tour stops and I'm going to school full time!

gnELLSIE MEMMEL Q: This Olympics was probably a little disappointing to you because of your ankle injury, can you talk about that? A: Yes, it was not the Olympics that I had dreamed of but I was still there and able to compete and help the U.S. team to bring home the silver medal.

dreamed of since you injured your ankle. How do you sum it up? A: Of course, I was devastated, but at the same time I had to be strong for the rest of my team. I wish I could have competed all-around in prelims but I'm glad I was able to at least compete bars. I couldn't be more proud of every girl on the team for sticking together and ove rcoming all of the obstacles that were thrown in our direction.

Q: What you have been doing since the Olympics?

A: I've been trying to take it easy, but mostly catching up in school and with friends. I've also made mUltiple appearances in my community.

ALICIA SACRAMONE Q: What has life been like since the Olympic Games?

Q: How was the Oprah experience for you? A: The Oprah experience was a lot of fun . It was so great to see the rest of the team and the other U.S. athletes.

Q: What was it like being a member of the Olympic Team?

A: My life has been pretty crazy since the Olympics. I've been doing a bunch of traveling and appearances. I got to throw the first pitch out at a Red Sox Game which was a blast. By far my favorite thing was going to Fashion Week in NYC.

A: Being a member of the Olympic team was really special. I set the 2008 Olympics as my goal when I was in third grade. It was an incredible opportunity to represent the United States. Winning the silver medal was one of the best moments of my Olympic experience. I felt so proud standing on the podium .

Q: What was it like winning the team silver medal?

Q: What's next for you in gymnastics?

A: It's a huge honor just to compete in the Olympic Games, and to come home with a silver medal makes the experience even more memorable.

A: Next for me is training and improving the strength in my knee.

Q: You chose to only do a few stops on the

tour, what is keeping you busy these days? Q: I know you participated in the Frosted Pink with a Twist show. How was this experience?

A: The Frosted Pink with a Twist show was amazing! It was for such a great cause and to be able to perform with live musical artists was a blast! Q: After the tour, do you plan to go back to training or what are your gymnastics plans?

A: As of now, I'm thinking I won't be training anymore after tour, my body was just too battered after these Games and I don't think it would hold out much longer. Q: What about school, what are your plans as it relates to school?

A: I plan on starting up classes again at Brown University in the spring and after I graduate I would love to go to design school.

A: I'm only doing a few stops on tour. Since I'm a sophomore in high school my parents and I decided it would be better for me to only do a few stops so I wouldn't miss that much school. I really want to work Drivers Ed into my schedule, too, so that I can get my license.

Q: What have you been doing since the Olympic Games? A: Life has been hectic with a lot of interviews and travel. So far I really haven't had too much time to myself. I've had two days at home since the Olympics have been over. I made it down to Houston to see my parents and they had like 300 people in my front yard when I got home. Everything has been pretty crazy, now I'm on the tour. Q: Are you still at Oklahoma?

A: I have one semester of school left (to finish degree in Business Management) so I plan to go back in January to finish. Q: What do you hope to do?

A: Well long-term I hope to open up a gymnastics facility. My sister has been a dancer for 20 something years and she wants to open up a dance studio so I think we could feed off each other. So that's the plan after gymnastics. Right now I have my mind set on 2012 and maybe 2016 so that's more longterm stuff.

Q: So tell me about your team and winning the bronze medal, how was that? A: Oh, that was a dream come true. I know it sounds cliche but it really was, to be a true underdog story where people didn't even think we'd make finals and then we won a medal. To finally get up there on the podium was an emotional moment for all of us. We were just like wow, I can't believe it.

Q: Tell me about your high bar routine during finals. A: I had to change my routine to even be a contender during finals. To get into finals I used my easier routine that I'm used to and I did a really good set in prelims and made it to finals. I knew I had to do something more to medal. During event finals when I won the silver medal, that was actually the first time I'd ever made the new routine in competition. I just wish I had stuck the dismount instead of taking the step because I would have won . It was exciting to walk away with another medal.

A: I went home for about a week then I left for the tour. I'm having a great time performing with no pressure. It's kind of a vacation for me and I love it.

Q: You were an alternate going into the Games and ended up on the team can you tell us about that? A: Ron Brant told us that Morgan Hamm may not be ready and that one of us alternates was going to have to step in. It was pretty hectic moving from alternate to team member - it was very emotional. I can't imagine what Dave (Durante) went through . It was pretty hard stuff.

Q: Tell me about winning a bronze medal? A: For me it was a dream come true and for my dad, too. For everyone who has supported me all this time! Q:How was the food in the Athlete's Village? A: It was good. The food was really great. They even had a

Q: What have you been doing since the Olympics? A: I'm on the Gymnastics Tour of Superstars. The first show was on my birthday in Reno. Q: How old were you?

A: I'm officially old, 28! It's been nonstop since the Games which is good because it means that gymnastics and our team is getting a lot of media exposure. Q: When did you find out you were no longer an alternate to the Olympic Team (when Paul Hamm withdrew his position). A: The day before we were ready to leave for San Jose for processing. I found out from my brother who heard about it. I had mixed emotions. I felt bad for Paul and the team but I also knew that I was right in there and next in line. Q: To have all that adversity leading up to the Games and then to win the bronze medal, how did that feel? A: I think it makes the story that much sweeter. It's not like we just went to the Olympics and won a medal and were expected to do that. We went through a lot of changes and took a difficult situation and molded it into a fabulous message. Q: Will you continue with gymnastics? A: I haven't decided but I may stick around for another year at least. I still have a couple small goals that I'd like to accomplish like getting a couple of skills named after me. 24

Q: What have you been up to since the Olympic Games?

A: I've been travelling a lot! I got a key to my hometown city, Rio Rancho, and got to see all of my family and friends. Now I'm travelling on the tour.

Q: What was your overall experience at the Games? A: It was pretty overwhelming. I'd never been to a World Championships so my biggest competition prior to the Games was the Pan American Games and the Olympics were eight times as big. Q: How was the food in the athlete's village? A: The food was really good. I ate cereal and the Asian food bar and had dumplings everyday. I also liked the Italian station with pizza, pasta and stuff.

Q: What was it like getting that bronze

medal hung around your neck? A: I had such mixed emotions going through my head -- like this can't be us. It was just a lot of joy and excitement. Q: Will you go back to training center when you return? A: Yes, I'm going back to train for Winter Cup. I'm going for another four years!

Q: Are you done with school now?

A: I went to UNM but dropped out to go train at the training center. I need to get back to school and finish. I could probably be done in about two semesters.

Q: What was it like winning the bronze medal? A: It capped off the most up and down two years of my life. I had a good 2005 but a rough 2006 and 2007. I didn't think I was going to make it. My major goal was to make the team. People doubted us. We were the underdogs but we just kept going and thinking positive. A couple guys dropped out and we had a bunch of changes but we didn't let anything affect us. Q: Are you continuing to train after the tour and will you go for the 2009 World Championships?

A: Yes, of course I plan to continue training. I don't know about Worlds . This tour is taking a lot of time out of my training and I want to make sure I'm good and healthy before continuing. Q: Did you meet any athletes while in Beijing?

A: I talked to Daron Williams, he's another University of Illinois grad and we were both freshman at the same time. He went on to the NBA and is a big success . I know our college is happy about having two Olympic medalists.

Q: Tell me about Chevron and how their sponsorship has helped you? A: Chevron has made it possible for athletes to continue training. Injuries are tough in th is sport and national team selection is done every six months. Chevron is there to support us even during the tough times.

Q: What was it like to win the bronze medal? A: I don't know if you saw the footage of the Games or not, but when they put that medal around my neck, it was so overwhelming. All of that hard work that I've put in and all of those troubles I've gone through, to come out with the medal is just amazing.

Q: What have you been doing since the Olympics?

A: I spent a couple of extra days in China with my family. I got to sightsee a little bit and see the Summer Palace. Then I started on the tour.

Q: What are your plans after the tour?

A: I'm still involved with Penn State as the assistant coach. It was great that they let me do the tour and they were able to work things out. I have that obligation when I go back as we go into gymnastics season. I'm still deciding if I' ll train or not. Although as it stands now I'm not really ready to give up the sport so I'm leaning towards training and continuing. It's so of strange because you have this goal and you don't think about anything but the goal and now the goal has been achieved so I have a lot of thinking to do. I have a lot to figure out. ~

ristin Allen and Michael Rodrigues, both of Livermore, Calif., and West Coast Training Center, won the silver medal in mixed pair at the 2008 Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships, held at Kelvin Hall in Glasgow, Scotland, Oct. 12. This is the USA's fourth straight world medal in mixed pair. Allen and Rodrigues posted a score of 28.801 for their combined routine to tie for the silver medal with the Russian mixed pair of Anastasia Gorbatyuk and Alexander Barleben. Russia's Olga Sviridova and Stanislav Babarykin won the gold medal with a score of 28.812. "We were very excited to win the silver medal and represent the United States of America well," Allen said."Competition was tough and intense, but we didn't let our nerves affect our performance." "Due to television coverage, we had to wait until the next routine was completed before the scores were posted," said Rodrigues, who won a world bronze medal in 2006 with then-partner Clare Brunson. "During that two-and-a-half minutes, Kristin and I were on an emotional rollercoaster. We have to admit that waiting was the hardest part. Once the scores were posted, we were excited to see that we had won the silver medal for the USA." USA Gymnastics Aero Program Director Tom Housley said, "Michael and Kristin are new to the international scene, with the World Championships being their first major international meet. Based on their final standings, Michael and Kristin qualified to compete at the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, Twain. The pair has a very bright future together." ~

"It was really amazing just being at the World CuP Final." alon Ludvigson, 20, of Pocatello, Idaho, earned the silver medal in men's tumbling at the 200B World Cup Final in Togliatti, Russia, Sept. 20, 200B . The 2007 world tumbling champion Andrey Krylov of Russia won the gold medal and Poland's JozefWadecki claimed the bronze. Ludvigson, coached by Justen Millerbernd, posted scores of 37.BO and 35.30 on his passes for a total of 73.10, four tenths of a point behind Krylov's 73.50. Wadecki scored a 72.BO. We caught up to Ludvigson and asked him about the competition. Here's what he had to say.

K

How did it feel to win a silver medal at World Cup Final? It was really amazing just being at the World Cup Final. Only the top eight gymnasts in the world are invited to the meet and I've been trying to get there for the past two years. I qua lified in seventh position, which meant I had to compete second up. I just did the best passes I could and had to sit and wait to see what the results were. I was in first place after the first pass and had a transition error on my second pass. So we just sat and waited for everyone else to compete. When it was all done I ended up with the silver medal. I was really happy because my goal was just to qualify to the event. It is pretty much the equivalent to the Olympic Games for tumbling, so it felt pretty awesome! What was your winning routine? In tumbling you have to perform two passes, kind of like the vault finals. In my first pass I performed: Round off - full in straight - whip - flic - full in straight - whip - flic - full in full out straight which carries a degree of difficulty of 12.B. For my second pass I performed: Round off - full in full out straight - whip - flic - double layout - whip - flic - full in pike which is an 11.6 degree of difficulty.

What is your next goal? My next goal is to compete at the 2009 World Games wh ich are in Kaohsiung, Taipei, and in more World Cup competitions. I'm also pursuing some specialist work for artistic gymnastics. In the near future, the French National Team will be doing a training camp here in the USA at our gym. I'm really excited about it. It's going to take place in November, during Thanksgiving break!

Are you going to school now? If so, where, what year are you and what is you major? Yes, I currently go to Idaho State University. I'm a freshman and in the Pre-Pharmacy program. Do you have a job as well as train? I'm an assistant team coach. I help out with my teammates and I also judge at competitions. I hold a Category 1 rating as a judge, which is the highest national level. I hope to take the FIG Brevet test next spring to judge internationally. Ii'i

The 2008 Future Stars Camp took place September 25-30 at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY. The 40-member team (10 more than last year) was led by Brooke Bushnell Toohey, Future Stars Coordinator. A new ballet instructor Michela Boschetto, who trained in Italy and is currently the Director of the Olympic Center School of Ballet in Lake Placid, NY., did an amazing job with the gymnasts and had them loving ballet by the end of the four days! Mila Harty, Iryna Zhurenko and Valentina Kevlian were the rhythmic experts who taught everything from basic equipment handling, body skills, group, conditioning and lots more! Most of the gymnasts' personal coaches attended the camp to not only learn new ideas for training their athletes but also to work together and share their expertise and knowledge of the sport. The camp was a huge success this year and the program continues to grow. ent results Stars and Stripes Cup Trampoline Competition he 2008 Stars and Stripes Cup,a Level 10 and Elite trampoline event, took place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., Oct. 12. Three athletes won two titles each. Alaina Williams of Amarillo, Texas/USOTC Trampoline Team, M.ackenzie Kulka of Tulsa, Okla./Oklahoma Extreme, and Phillip Gifford of Colorado Springs, Colo./Artsports, won trampoline and synchronized trampoline in their respective divisions. Williams placed first in the senior women's division, with Kulka and Gifford placing first in the Levell 0 women 's and men's divisions, respectively. Williams won senior women's trampoline with a score of 97.30, and paired with Nani Vercruyssen of Honolulu, HawaiilUSOTC Trampoline Team, to win synchronized trampoline with a 122.80. Kulka posted a score of 85.10 to win Level 10 women's trampoline, and earned a score of 107.50 with Alicia Powder of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.!Worid Elite Gymnastics, to finish first in synchronized trampoline. Gifford scored an 83.70 in Level 10 men's trampoline and teamed with Cameron Heimerdinger of Colorado Springs, Colo./Artsports, to win synchronized trampoline with a 94.60.
