INSIDE INSIDE INSIDE USA Gymnastics will “Turn the World Upside Down” in celebration of National Gymnastics Day U on Saturday, Sept. 22. At 1 p.m. ET, gymnasts, families, friends and enthusiasts nationwide will turn upside down, snap a photo and share it on the USA Gymnastics Facebook page. National Gymnastics Day activities can also be used to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This year we’ve teamed up First Lady Michelle Obama in the Let’s Move! initiative to raise a healthier generation of kids. The First Lady announced a nationwide commitment to get more than 1.7 million American children active as part of her Let’s Move! initiative to solve the problem of childhood obesity in a generation. USA Gymnastics hopes to get more kids than ever involved with this year’s National Gymnastics Day celebration and to benefit the Let’s Move! campaign. USA Gymnastics “Turned the World Upside Down” in London, winning six medals including the Fierce Five’s historic team gold medal, the all-around gold medal from Gabby Douglas of Virginia Beach, Va./Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance, and the first-ever women’s floor exercise gold medal from Alexandra Raisman of Needham, Mass./Brestyan’s American Gymnastics. Now, it’s time to celebrate their history-making Olympics with National Gymnastics Day! Each year, USA Gymnastics celebrates National Gymnastics Day to build awareness of the sport and support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Money raised will benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in each club’s local community. Since 2001, gymnastics clubs across the country have raised more than $1.7 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. For more information on National Gymnastics Day and the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, go to www.usagym.org/upsidedown. The Kellogg’s® Tour of Gymnastics Champions is coming to 40 cities across the country from Sept. 8 through Nov. 18. We are thrilled to feature some of our country’s top athletes from the London Olympic Games, as well as other gymnastics notables from recent Olympic and World Championship teams. Help celebrate with the U.S. Gymnastics Team! For more info, visit www.KelloggsTour.com. See you in the gym,

prepared? Start a special needs program! Plan, prepare, and accommodate this growing poputlation.
S
TNT Kid’s Fitness was designed in 2006, to include programming for all children and all abilities! As the saying goes “children make up one-third of our population but are 100% of our future.” By recognizing this need and planning for the future of children, TNT planned and trained staff to to accommodate children with all abilities. The return? Your enrollment increases and you are fulfilling the need for all children to be physically active.
tarting a Special Needs program takes commitment, trust, hiring the right staff, and marketing with the right audience to get it off the ground. Chances are, your gym has children with special needs in your recreational classes and you are not even aware of it. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 88 children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network. ASDs are almost five times more common among boys (one in 54) than among girls (one in 252). How is a gym owner to understand the growing diagnodiagnosis and all the other children with a special need and help their staff be
In an effort to set up staff and children for success of this progran, hire the right staff. A physical education teacher with an adaptive degree is a good choice. As I see it, most gym owners would not put a recreationrecreational gymnastics coach with a year of experience in a position to work with Level 10 athletes. So why would you expect the same staff to work with children of all different abilities? How do you sustain this salary? There are several ways: enhance your recreational/fitness program to include children with special needs, build partnerships for contractual space, and partner with organizations for class time to name a few ways to increase your budget

to sustain this salary. Physical education teachers are very versatile and it’s important you utilize their maximum potential for your gym programs. Ensure your staff knows the resources they have available to help them with their classes, educate, and inform all staff how to market this program in your gym. Inside every child is a gift waiting to be opened! If you want to start, grow, and sustain a successful program, hire the right staff, train the existing staff, make impactful partnerships, and market, market, market! Market Market-ing helps raise the awareness needed to increase your enrollment in all of your programs and training your staff to cross-market relates to zero budgeting dollars needed. Parents who have children with special needs are franctifranctically looking for anything their child can be a part of. All children love to run, jump, roll, and bounce. Children in a wheelchair, who have Down’s Syndrome or who use a walker, just to name a few, have the same desires as all other children – to play! Most families have two or three children. If you can accommodate all of them in your programs, your enrollment just went up!
It’s a known fact that movement regulates children’s emotional, cognitive, social, and physical needs. Althougth children with special needs may do gymnastics or fitness in a more modified approach, they have the same aspiraaspiration as children with no special needs! Incorporate children with special needs into your gym programs? Absolutely, YES!

Dynamic Warm-up for EXPLOSIVE Performance By Jeff Richter CSCS, USAW

arming up prior to practices and meets is not only widely accepted among gymnasts but is also considered an integral part of a gymnast’s overall daily routine; therefore, the purpose of this article isn’t to convince the reader of the merit of warming up but to discuss what strategies are optimal and most likely to allow a gymnast to perform at his/her best. A commonly used strategy to prepare a gymnast for activity is static stretching. Static stretching is a method in which the athlete puts a muscle group into a stretched position and holds that stretch for a specific time period, which is generally at least 30 seconds. This article will propose (through the support of research literature) that static stretching is not an ideal method to prepare the body for gymnastics and will go so far as to say that static stretching prior to activity can cause a decrement in performance. For many, this will be tough to accept because A sample stretch from the a plethora of coaches and Dynamic Warm-up videos. athletes have implemented these kinds of warm-ups for years. The paradigm shift that has diminished the value of static stretching in favor of a dynamic warm-up routine will undoubtedly cause many to be hesitant to incorporate a change
in their programming. Hopefully, the following rationale will at least cause coaches and athletes to consider and weigh each method in hopes of finding the best possible strategy. During static stretching, the body is still and does not move; consequently, the body temperature does not elevate. This is significant because it is advantageous for the body to experience an elevation in body temperature to accentuate the speed and efficiency at which metabolic reactions take place. Perhaps even more concerning is that static stretching essentially “shuts-down” the efficiency of the nervous system in producing explosive movements. Allow me to explain: When we hold a stretch on a muscle we evoke what is referred to as the myotatic reflex. This means that our muscle spindles, which detect length changes in the muscles, cause a reflex contraction to take place when they notice lengthening of the muscle fibers. However, prolonged stretching may inhibit myotatic reflex activity,1 allowing the muscle-tendon unit to lengthen with minimal resistance from the muscle and connective tissues.2 This is not a good thing when it comes to performance because, as one researcher

proposes, the “inability to generate forces after (static) stretching results from a lack of neural activation.”3 In addition, other researchers point to the well-supported theory that explosive athletic movements are compromised from static stretching because of a loss of elastic energy in the muscle.4 In laymen terms, this is similar to a rubber band being stretched for a prolonged period of time and thus losing its elastic “springy” properties. Other studies also illustrate this theory by proving that static stretching before a vertical jump decreases maximal height achieved5 and force production.6 If gymnasts lose their abilities to use the elastic properties of the muscle, they are not able to be as explosive as they can be. Of course, this is an obvious problem considering gymnasts have to produce extremely high levels of power regardless of what event they are engaged in. The sport-specific demands of gymnastics dictates that a warm-up must “crank-up” the nervous system instead of shutting it down. In conclusion, based on the above information we know that optimal warm-up strategies should include components that raise body temperature and take the muscles through a healthy range of motion without negating the advantages of having a nervous system that is sensitive and ready to promote explosive movement. Dynamic mobility work performed before a practice or meet accomplishes this
requirement. Greater neural activity that can generate greater muscle stiffness may explain the enhanced force production and speed performance following dynamic stretching.7 The dynamic warm-up can be used to its greatest potential by ensuring the athlete is always moving the joints through a healthy range of motion to elicit not only joint mobility where necessary but also to give the body proprioceptive awareness by forcing certain joints to fulfill their roles as stabilizers of the body. It should be noted that these should be non-fatiguing dynamic movements that do not exhaust a gymnast before the meet or practice session starts. Also, a dynamic warm-up should utilize movements that occur in different vectors and planes of motion. After a practice or meet, it is very appropriate to utilize the benefits of static stretching and/ neuromusor PNF (proprioceptive neuromus cular facilitation) stretching. Flexibility and mobility are without a doubt among the paramount utilizrequirements of the sport and utiliz ing these methods of stretching after you do gymnastics is in the best interest of these athletes. Please take time to view our videos sent to USA Gymnastics on dynamic warm-up strategies. These videos will give you ideas on how you can take your warm-ups to the next level to put yourself in a position to succeed.

CLUBS CARE CA
AWARENESS + ACTION = T here’s no doubt about it … clubs care. About the safety of the athletes in their gyms. About having top-notch instructors who teach gymnastics effectively using up-to-date techniques. About the success and longevity of their business. That’s why it was easy for USA Gymnastics to title its new educational campaign designed just for clubs, the “Clubs Care Campaign.” Every day, by demonstrating the passion and enthusiasm they have for our great sport, gymnastics clubs contribute to the mission of USA Gymnastics by encouraging participation and the pursuit of excellence in the sport. AMPAIGN = PREVENTION This will not be a campaign that inundates you with information you don’t have time to digest, let
alone implement. We are tapping into the expertise and resources of our education partners to produce a campaign that can greatly benefit your club and the gymnasts you serve. • The Clubs Care Campaign is uniquely tailored for clubs. Whether you have 100 or 1000 members, and whether you’ve been proactive in policy development or are still refining your procedures, the Clubs Care Campaign has something beneficial for your club. • The Clubs Care Campaign will both raise awareness and prompt action. Learn what child sexual abuse is, its prevalence, predators’ “grooming behaviors” and signs of abuse. Be empowered to take specific actions in your club to eliminate the opportunity for inappropriate behavior or sexual misconduct to occur and be ready to respond in case an allegation of misconduct arises. • The Clubs Care Campaign takes into account the many demands a club owner has on his/her time. USA Gymnastics and its education partners have compiled and will provide information, strategies, templates, toolkits, checklists, action steps, posters and more through various media, including emails, Technique, the web site and even the good old mail, over the course of next year. All of these resources will be delivered right to you. USA Gymnastics is proud to launch the Clubs Care Campaign -- a campaign that truly has the potential to help you prevent inappropriate behavior or sexual misconduct. We hope you’ll join us and your fellow clubs in showing gymnasts and their parents how much gymnastics clubs care about them and their safety. Visit usagym.org/ClubsCare to learn more.

ow that the Olympics
are over and your classes are bursting at the seams, it’s time to learn all of the names of students in your fall classes. We’ve put together a few fun activities to help in this endeavor. We encourage you to work hard at this task and make it a top priority. Children and parents want their teacher to know their name! Try designing some activities around learning their names. Here are a few good ways to start.
3. Ask and Mix Up
1. Name Tags
Start out class with your roll call sheet and say their name. During warm up say each child’s name. When you line up to go to another area, say their names. You will have their names down in no time!
Hand out blank nametags and have students write and design their own nametags. (This is for older students - have a box of markers when they come in and pick one to write their first name). For preschoolers, have them already prepared, ask them their name and see if they can pick it out from your stack of nametags. Help them out by telling them the first letter of their name. NOTE: You may want to have preschoolers put a nametag on their backs as well, especially if they are going to be moving. You will have a better chance at seeing them from there. Many 2- and 3-year-olds will just play with the nametag or not want to wear it, so the back is a good spot.
2. Hoopin’ the Names
After checking the roll and seeing all the students faces, tell them that you are going to give yourself a test. Put out several different colored hoops. Call out three letters of the alphabet and tell the kids whose first letter of their first name begins with one of those letters to go in the first hoop. Example: everyone whose first name begins with a, b, or c goes in a blue hoop, everyone whose name begins with e, f, or g goes in a green hoop, etc. Once you start getting names down, you can use the same activity to learn a little about your students. Example: everyone who likes soccer go in a blue hoop, everyone who is a twin go in a red hoop, etc. The teacher then has to identify each student in each hoop by name again.

TECHNIQUE • SEP T E MBER/O C TOBER 2012
Stand all the children in a line. Recite each child’s name as you walk along the line. Then, shuffle the kids into another order and recite their names again. See if you can do it several times and name them. You will be more aware of what they look like - really look at them when you do this.
4. Say Their Name Multiple Times
5. As They Leave
As students leave, see if you can say their names as they leave the gym. If you get it wrong or you can’t remember, then have them tell you their name and give you a high five.
6. Exercising Your Name
Have all students stand in a circle, including the teacher. The first student to the right of the teacher says his/her first name, and then does an exercise or a stretch. The next student must say the first person’s name, do that person’s exercise, then say his/her own name and do his/her own exercise. The third person must say both of the first two persons’ names, do their exercises then his/her own, etc. Then the last person is the teacher who must go around the circle, starting with the first person, and say each student’s name, plus do his or her exercise. Remember, the students want to know who their classmates are as well. This is great for finding new friends.

7. Let’s Do It, Too
Have students stand in a circle. Have the first student in the circle (your choice as to who that would be) begin by saying their name. After they say their name, they are to put a movement for every syllable in their name. For example, if the students name is Jessica, the movement could be clap, stomp, clap. The first clap is for “Jess”, the stomp is for “i”, and the third clap is for “ca”. Then, have all of the students repeat the movement while saying that person’s name. The same procedure would be done for the next student in line. After the students have all said the next one, they would then comeback and do the one before that. By the time the entire group is done, you will have said and done the movements for every person in the group. This is a fun school age activity. For preschool, everyone could clap the syllables for each child’s name.
8. Rhyme their Name
Find a word to rhyme with their names or a phrase. “Kevin is now eleven.”
9. Characteristics of Students
In your roll call book or class roster, try to write something next to their name to help you remember who they are. For example, Jessie Smith - red hair; Josh Brown - glasses; Sally Lane - pony tail; Jordan Ford - shoe laces on sneakers different color, etc. This is also a good idea when you need to be reminded of a shy child or one with some other issues.
10. Greet Them at the Door
Make it a point to greet each class at the door with a smile and try to say as many names as possible. Example: “Good morning, Ashley. How are you? What did you do over the weekend?” Even if you get them incorrect, students and parents will appreciate that you are trying because it shows that you care. If all else fails, make up new silly names for everyone in class that day, they will go home laughing at their new name. (Be sure to give yourself a silly name too!)
