The Visa Championships for men and women were held in St. Louis, Mo. John Orozco won the senior title for men while Jordyn Wieber won her second consecutive title for the women. The junior and senior national teams were also selected and the top athletes earned the right to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials-Gymnastics.

The Trampoline National Championships for seniors was the third and final competition to determine the men’s and women’s Olympic slots. Savannah Vinsant and Steven Gluckstein will represent the USA in trampoline at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Rebecca Sereda won the senior all-around title at the 2012 Rhythmic National Championships and Ronit Shamuilov earned the junior title. The junior and senior national teams were named.

Wow – we have the Olympic Team! Thank you, San Jose, or should I say Gymnastics City USA, for an incredible Olympic Trials-Gymnastics. The city rolled out the red carpet and the crowds were fabulous. From morning fitness to National Congress & Trade Show to the Visa Fan Fest and AT&T Block Party, the event was a huge success. Most significantly, the HP Pavilion was filled to capacity during the final night of women’s competition. The arena was bursting with noise and celebration for all the gymnasts and our Olympic Teams. The streamers, the confetti, the music and the tears of joy -- it was all amazing. After the competition, Kenny Loggins gave a free concert to all of the fans with a ceremonial candle lighting to send our team to London in style. Congratulations to all of the athletes who competed and especially those who made the U.S. Olympic Team. The women include Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Alexandra Raisman, Kyla Ross, Jordyn Wieber and replacement athletes Sarah Finnegan, Anna Li and Elizabeth Price. The men’s team includes Jake Dalton, Jonathan Horton, Danell Leyva, Sam Mikulak, John Orozco and replacement athletes Chris Brooks, Steven Legendre and Alex Naddour. Julie Zetlin will represent the USA in rhythmic gymnastics, and Steven Gluckstein and Savannah Vinsant will represent our country in trampoline. Our athletes have worked hard to achieve this goal of becoming Olympians, and we applaud their commitment and determination. Also, congratulations to their coaches and families on the success they all share. This is America’s Team – your team. These athletes are making their final preparations for the Olympic Games before heading over to London. Based on their performances, we are very optimistic about the Olympic Games. USA WOMEN’S TEAM POISED FOR LONDON

abrielle Douglas of Virginia Beach, Va./Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance, earned an automatic berth to the 2012 Olympic Games in London after posting the highest two-day total in the all-around, 123.450, at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The women’s U.S. Olympic team was announced a audi few minutes later to the audience in the arena, and in addition to Douglas, the team includes: McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif./AOGC; Alexandra Raisman of Needham, Mass./Brestyan’s American Gymnastics; Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max; and Jordyn Wieber of DeWitt, Mich./ Gedderts’ Twistars replace USA. Three replacement athletes were also announced: Sarah Finnegan of St. Louis, Mo./ Great American Gymnastics Jordyn Express; Anna Li of Aurora, WIEBER Ill./Legacy Elite Gymnastics;

and Elizabeth Price of Coopersburg, Pa./Parkettes. Douglas, Wieber (123.350), and Raisman (120.950) took the top three spots in the all-around standings. “All of this hard work has definitely paid off,” Douglas said. “I just can’t wait to wear those red, white and blue stripes down my back. It felt like a dream come true.” “It feels amazing to be an Olympian,” Wieber said. “This is definitely the best day of my life and knowing that all of my hard work has paid off is amazing. I’m just so proud of each and every girl who competed here today.” Douglas and Wieber came down to the wire on the last event. Wieber performed first in the final rotation, performing a solid Amanar vault to score 15.800. Douglas took to the floor exercise needing to post better than 15.200 to win the Olympic Trials and secure the automatic Olympic berth. She delivered a 15.300 after executing a one-and-a-half through to triple full mount. In the first rotation, Douglas wasted no time as the night’s first competitor, performing a nearly flawless Amanar to score a 16.000. On the uneven bars, Douglas kept calm as her hand slipped on her Pak salto, but she didn’t miss a beat,

Wieber started competition on the uneven bars with a 15.350, sticking her full-twisting double-layout dismount. Wieber executed a front aerial to one-arm back handspring to layout stepout on the balance beam in the second Elizabeth rotation, PRICE posting a 14.900. Wieber’s energetic floor routine brought the house down and scored her highest score ever on floor with a 15.600. Kyla Steady throughout every routine, Raisman ROSS received her highest score on the floor exercise, 15.500, where she performed her signature opening pass, a one-and-a-half through to Arabian double, punch layout. “I don’t even know what to say – I’m so speechless right now,” Raisman said. “I feel so honored and so excited. I didn’t think I would get this emotional about it, but I’m Sarah thinking about all of the hard FINNEGAN work it has taken to get to this.” re Raisman also received scores of 14.450, uneven bars; 15.400, balance beam; and 15.300, vault. Completing the American squad for the London Olympics, Ross and Maroney posted combined all-around totals of 120.000 and 117.650, respectively. “This is the most surreal feeling,” said an emotional Ross.

“Hearing my name called, I couldn’t even believe it.” Ross dazzled on the uneven bars where her opening combination, a toe-on McKayla Shaposhnikova to Pak salto, helped her MARONEY earn her highest score of the night, a 15.650. She also earned scores of 15.150, vault; 15.050, balance beam; and 14.750, floor. Maroney’s incredible height on her Amanar vault captivated the crowd and scored a 16.150. Nearly sticking her second vault, a Mustafina, she earned a 15.750 and a 15.950 two-vault average. Maroney also scored 13.700, uneven bars; 15.000, balance beam; and 14.500, floor. “This is the best feeling – it’s just so amazing,” said Maroney. “I’m in shock right now. I think this will be the happiest I’ll ever be in my life.” The top three on each event at the Olympic Trials included Maroney’s first place finish on vault. Alicia Sacramone of Winchester, Mass./Brestyan’s took second with her twovault average. On bars, Douglas and Ross tied for first and Li was third. Raisman led the standings on two events – balance beam and floor exercise. Sacramone took second on beam and Wieber and Ross tied for third. Wieber and Douglas went 2–3 on floor. anell Leyva of Miami/ Team Hilton HHonors (Universal Gymnastics), and John Orozco of the Bronx, N.Y./Team Hilton HHonors (U.S. Olympic Training Center), each Danell earned a LEYVA ticket to the 2012 Olympic Games in London on the final night at the U.S. Olympic Trials. The duo automatically earned Olympic berths by finishing first and second in the all-around and recording three or more top three finishes in the individual event standings. “It’s surreal, super unbelievable,” Leyva said. “It’s crazy to say that I just finished my first Olympic Trials. I’m so glad to be here. The crowd was amazing, all of the guys were amazing.” “I can’t really believe that I am here right now,” said a tearful Orozco. “I just want to thank my parents and coaches – we did it!” Leyva posted a fourday combined score of 368.350, followed by Orozco, 367.400, and Jonathan Horton of Houston/Team Hilton HHonors (Cypress), 361.500.

Jake Dalton of Reno, Nev./University of Oklahoma, and Chris Brooks of Houston/ Team Hilton HHonors (Cypress), tied in the fourday standings with matching 358.350 scores. Dalton had the top scores on both floor exercise and vault. The remaining three members of the Jonathan U.S. men’s Olympic HORTON team were named the following day and included Horton, Dalton, Sam Mikulak of Newport Coast, Calif./University of Michigan, and rere placement athletes Brooks, Steven Legendre, Legendre Port Jefferson, N.Y./Team Hilton HHonors (University of Oklahoma) and Alexander Naddour,, Gilbert, Ariz./Team Naddour Hilton HHonors (USA Youth Fitness Center). During the final days of Olympic Trials, Leyva and Orozco were locked in a tight back and forth competition with each leading the compecompe tition throughout the day, but Leyva’s spectacular parallel bars routine in the final rotation, which earned a 15.850, moved him to the top of the standings. Mikulak, who had been third in the overall standings after three days of competition, only competed on the pommel horse in day two of Olympic Trials competition due to a sprained left ankle suffered in the first day of competition. He scored a 14.400 on pommel horse. Legendre finished second on floor and third on vault, while Naddour finished first on pommel horse. Other top competitors at Olympic Trials were Paul Ruggeri of Manlius, N.Y./ University of Illinois, who placed sixth in the all-around with a score of 352.80 and third place on floor and high bar; C.J. Maestas of Corrales, N.M./University of Illinois, with a seventh Steven place finish (351.750); and LEGENDRE Brandon Wynn of Columbus, Ohio/Team Hilton HHonors (Ohio State University) who was second on still rings.

he senior men’s all-around title came down to the wire at the 2012 Visa Championships, with the final event determining the 2012 U.S. champion. John Orozco of the Bronx, N.Y./Team Hilton HHonors (U.S. Olympic Training Center), and Danell Leyva of Miami/Team Hilton HHonors (Universal Gymnastics), began the second day of competition in a virtual tie, separated by just .050. edged Leyva to take the title, 184.850 to 184.800. Sam Mikulak of Ann Arbor, Mich./ University of Michigan, won the all-around bronze medal, posting a 182.850. Orozco’s all-around total for the second day of competition was 93.050, while Leyva and Mikulak posted 92.950 and 92.300, respectively. Orozco’s last event was the floor exercise, where he dismounted with a nearly stuck two-and-ahalf twist and earned a 15.500. Orozco cupped his hands over his mouth in disbelief as the score flashed – confirming his come-from-behind victory. “I can’t even describe what I’m feeling right now.” Orozco said after taking his first U.S. senior all-around title. “Danell gave me such a great fight – it was so exciting and so amazing. The level of gymnastics tonight was incredible. Orozco started the event on pommel horse, posting an impressive 15.000 after performing intricate single-pommel work and a handstand dismount. On the rings, Orozco performed two variations of the Maltese before sticking his one-and-a-half twisting, double back dismount (15.350). In rotation three, Orozco’s front handspring layout double twist vault earned him a 15.900. Moving to the parallel bars,

Orozco continued on a roll, scoring 15.450 for his routine that included a peach half to peach combination. Orozco dazzled the crowd with his high-flying horizontal bar routine, showing a nearly flawless full-twisting layout Tkatchev release move to earn 15.850, before moving to his final routine on the floor. Leyva, the defending champion, started off the second day of competition performing a Kasumatsu one-and-a-half vault (15.900). On the parallel bars, where he is the current World champion, Leyva put on a clinic, earning a 16.000. Showing his trademark flair on the high bar, Leyva soared on his layout Kovacs to earn a 16.350. A nearly sold-out arena watched as Wieber cemented her second senior U.S. all-around title with her vault, her signature Amanar. Her score, a 15.900, put her out of reach for the rest of the competition. “It’s so exciting to come out and win the Visa Championships in an Olympic year,” Wieber said. “This is the last competition before the Olympic Trials, so to go eightfor-eight is amazing.” Earlier, Wieber began competition on the uneven bars, posting a 15.050

with a stuck double layout. On the balance beam, Wieber earned another 15.050, executing a front handspring to standing full to back handspring sequence and two back handsprings to a twoand-a-half twist dismount. Wieber mounted floor with a tucked double double and scored 15.250, before heading to the vault. Douglas shook off an early mistake on the balance beam, where she scored 14.100, in the second rotation with a nearly perfect floor routine. Her upbeat routine included a one-anda-half through to triple full mount and double back dismount and earned a 15.300 final score. Rotation three moved Douglas to the vault, where she performed an Amanar to score 15.800. In the final rotation, Douglas took to her best KYLA event, the uneven ROSS

bars. Showing her trademark amplitude and flair, Douglas earned a 15.850. Smiling ear-to-ear as she stuck her double layout dismount, Douglas gave a fist pump to the crowd as she came off the podium into the arms of coach Liang Chow. Douglas won the uneven bars title with a combined score of 31.300. Raisman won her third consecutive all-around bronze medal at the Visa Championships. Raisman started her competition with an Amanar of her own on vault to earn 15.300. Next, Raisman posted a 14.200 on the uneven bars, before moving to the beam where her showed through confidence in her steadiness. Performing a pike front to standing layout step out and Patterson dismount, she posted a 15.450 on the event. The final rotation took Raisman to the floor, where she is the reigning World bronze medalist, and she put on a show. She tumbled a triple full and double pike to split leap for a 15.800. Raisman won the U.S. title for both the balance beam (30.650) and floor (31.250). Three first-year seniors finished fourth through sixth in the all-around. Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./GymMax, finished a strong fourth, with bars being her best event (30.850), which was second in the rankings. Elizabeth Price of Coopersburg, Pa./Parkettes, finished fifth in the all-around, scoring a 15.800 and a 15.600 on her Amanar vaults. Sarah Finnegan of St. Louis, Mo./GAGE finished sixth overall and her best event was balance beam with a twoday total of 30.400, which was second at the Visa Championships. Alicia Sacramone, a 2008 Olympic team silver medalist, won her sixth U.S.

vault title with a 30.025 two-day average, just eight months after injuring her Achilles tendon. She vaulted a front handspring layout Rudi and a Yurchenko double full. She holds the U.S. women’s record for most titles for this event.

TEAM SILVER MEDAL AT 2012 JUNIOR PAN AMERICAN GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

kash Modi of Morganville, N.J./Monmouth Gymnastics Academy, led the U.S. junior men to team silver with an all-around score of 84.500, which earned the individual all-around bronze at the 2012 Junior Pan American Championships in Medellin, Colombia. Colombia placed first with a 254.600, the U.S. earned second with a 252.450 and Puerto Rico took third with a 245.450. All four U.S. men finished in the top 11 for individual allaround. During event finals, the U.S. men won four more medals. Modi and Timothy Wang of Riverside, Calif./South Coast Gymnastics, won the silver and bronze medals on parallel bars, respectively; Modi was also second on the pommel horse; and Marvin Kimble of Milwaukee, Wis./Swiss Turners Gymnastics Academy, was the still rings bronze medalist. With the parallel bars silver, Modi led Team USA in individual medals at the competition, finishing with two silvers and one bronze. In addition to his all-around bronze and parallel bars silver (14.150), he placed second on pommel horse with a 13.825. Kimble scored a 13.975 on still rings for the bronze medal. Wang scored 13.850 to win the bronze medal on parallel bars. In the other event finals, Kimble placed a fourth on vault with a 15.125; Joey Peters of Orefield, Pa./Parkettes National Gymnastics Center, was eighth on high bar with an 11.925, fifth on rings with a 13.725 and sixth on pommel horse with a 13.200; and Modi scored a 13.775 on floor exercise for sixth. he Trampoline National Championships was the third and final competition to determine the men’s and women’s Olympic slots. Savannah Vinsant of Newton, Texas/Trampoline and Tumbling Express, and Steven Gluckstein of Atlantic Heights, N.J./ETA Gymnastics, will represent the United States in trampoline at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Both won their respective U.S. trampoline titles at the 2012 USA Gymnastics Trampoline Championships at the San Jose Convention Center. “I’m speechless – I have no words for it,” said Vinsant, who won all three selection events. “I’m filled with joy and I’m at peace that it’s over. I had a big group of girls out there with me this year who were awesome, and they definitely kept me on my toes all year. I’m honored to

be representing Team USA.” “It’s surreal right now,” said Gluckstein, who also took top honors at all three selection events. “The greatest thing right now is the relief. I’m the kind of person who puts a lot of stress and a lot of pressure on myself, and it’s just been building since we qualified (for the Games) in January.” “We have such an amazing team with all the finalists here,” said Gluckstein, “and I knew it was going to be tough, but my dream is coming true and right now I’m ecstatic.”

Vinsant won the U.S. title after scoring a 53.140 for her routine in the finals and posting a 153.195 total, which clinched her ticket to London. Shanelle Landry of Lafayette, La./ETA Gymnastics, was second at 149.655, followed by Dakota Earnest of Plains, Texas/ Acrospirits with a 148.880. Gluckstein won the men’s title with his 56.355, sealing his Olympic berth. During event finals, Sereda earned gold on ball with a 27.280, Kerber took silver with a 27.200 and Lu earned bronze with a 25.980. In the clubs,

Sereda earned her second gold of the competi competition with a 27.230, followed by Zetlin with a 27.150 and Kerber with a 26.300. Kozitskiy won hoop with a 26.020, followed by Kerber with a 25.900 and Sereda with a 25.750. Zetlin won ribbon with a 27.530, followed by Sereda with a 26.900 and Kerber with a 26.230. Ronit Shamuilov of Brooklyn, N.Y/Isadora, earned the junior all-around national title with a two-day score of 206.275. Shamuilov, who led the all-around standings after the first day with a 102.300, won three of four events in the final en route to a 103.975. “I couldn’t have asked for better. To know that I set a goal and finally accomplished it, I feel so happy.” said Shamuilov, who won four event medals including two gold and two silver on the first day of competition. Trailing Shamuilov was Laura Zeng of Libertyville, Ill./North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center, second with a 205.650 followed by Julia Garbuz of Eden Prairie, Minn./NorthWest Rhythmic LLC, in third at 198.300. The top eight competitors earned spots on the Junior National Team: Jennifer Rokhman of Northbrook, Ill./North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center; Kristen Shaldybin of Allston, Mass./Isadora; Brigita Budginas of Agoura Hills, Calif./Platinum Laura ZENG Gymnastics; Garbuz; Lu; Monica Rokhman; Shamuilov; and Zeng. Shamuilov earned gold on ball with a 26.125, trailed by Zeng with a 25.600 and Garbuz with a 25.425. Zeng won hoop with a 25.500, followed by Serena Lu of Staten Island, N.Y./Isadora, Rokhman and Shamuilov tied for second with a 24.900. The same three took to the podium in ribbon after Shamuilov won with a 25.700, followed by Zeng with a 25.300 and Garbuz with a 24.550. early 450 of the USA’s best Level 10 gymnasts were in Hampton, Va., for the 2012 Women’s Junior Olympic National Championships held at the Hampton Roads Convention Center. Region 3 won the Super Team award with 53 points, followed by a tie for second between Region 1 and Region 5 with 47 points.

Congratulations to the top four all-around gymnasts in each division who earned a spot on the Junior Olympic National Team. The National Invitational Tournament (NIT) was held in conjunction with the JO National Championships. The NIT was developed to allow an additional 192 athletes an opportunity to compete at the national level and features gymnasts who ranked eighth, ninth and 10th in the allaround in each of the eight age divisions at the Regional Championships.

Donnell WHITTENBURG ore than 700 of the USA’s top Level 9 and 10 gymnasts competed in the 2012 P&G U.S. Men’s Junior Olympic National Championships, May 10–13, at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is the 38th year for the Men’s Junior Olympic Nationals and this year’s event was hosted by Queen City Gymnastics. The meet co-directors were Keith Pettit and Marilouise Beeman. Congratulations to the three all-around champions: Donnell Whittenburg of Baltimore, Md./Ultimate Gymnastics, won the Level 10 16–18 allaround title; Marvin Kimble of Milwaukee, Wis./Swiss Turners, won the Level 10 14–15

Region 7 won the 16–18 Regional Team competition with a score of 438.800, Region 5 finished second with 434.250, and third was Region 1 with 432.650. Region 3 won the 14–15 Regional Team competition with a total score of 427.850, followed by Region 5 with 423.200 and Region 4 with 419.300. In the Level 9 12–13, Region 3 won the Regional Team competition with a 406.800, Region 1 was second with 401.200 and Region 5 was third with 397.550. Swiss Turners won the Club Team division for Level 10’s with a score of 265.350, followed by Cypress Academy with 258.200 and SCATS with 256.550. Cypress Academy won the Club Team division for Level 9’s 12–13 with a score of 241.900. There was a tie for second between U.S. Gymnastics and Championships-TX with a 238.600. VINSANT WINS BRONZE AT WORLD CUP

Vinsant won a bronze medal at the 2012 Taiyuan World Cup in China, scoring a 53.125. China’s Dan Li and Wenna He took first and second, respectively, with scores of 56.190 and 55.975.

egion 8 captured the first ever Level 8 National Team Challenge at the USA Gymnastics Open Championships, a nationwide invitational for women’s gymnastics Levels 4–8 and Xcel, at the Jostens Center at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. More than 500 gymnasts competed in the second annual event that took place May 31–June 3. The competition featured a Level 8 National Team Challenge; both individual and club team champions for Xcel and Levels 4–8 competition; and crowned an overall club team champion. At the event, Region 8 captured the first ever Level 8 National Team Challenge. Teams were comprised of eight all-star

athletes from their respective regions. Region 8 scored 189.075, followed by Region 3 with 188.575 and Region 2 with 188.300. Team Ohio won the overall club championship with 31 points. Points were awarded based on team placement per session for Levels 4–8 and Xcel where five points were given for each session winner, two points for second place and one point for third. lexandra Raisman of Needham, Mass./Brestyan’s American Gymnastics, and Simone Biles of Spring, Texas/Bannon’s Gymnastics, won the senior and junior all-around titles, respectively, at the 2012 Secret U.S. Classic, held at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Ill. Raisman, who entered the competition as the defending champion, posted a 60.350 all-around total. First year senior Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym Max, took second in the all-around with a 59.800 total. Kennedy Baker of Flower Mound, Texas, another first year senior competitor, took the all-around bronze medal with a solid 56.800 total. In the junior division, Biles scored a 58.150 to win the title with Madison Desch of Lenexa, Kan./Great American Gymnastics Express, in second with a score of 57.350 and Amelia Hundley of Hamilton, Ohio/Cincinnati Gymnastics, in third with a 57.250. Whitfield Classic

he 2012 Whitfield Classic was held at the University of Michigan, March 17-18, 2012. The Foundation awarded four $3,000 scholarships to the following gymnasts: Alex Buscaglia, Chris Cameron, Brandon Wynn and Kevin Baker (Region 5).
