Wow!!! What a great week it was in Saint Paul, Minnesota – once again, the perfect host for the Visa Championships and USA Gymnastics National Congress. From the minute we arrived in the city, it was clear that the 2011 Visa Championships were going to be a big event. Everyone contributed to a fantastic undertaking, from delivering on our efforts to make these championships the “greenest” ever, to the more than 25,000 spectators who witnessed the event live. The city embraced our athletes and fan activities outside in nearby Rice Park were a big success. Whether it was «Painting in the Park» with Art of the Olympians or the 14 restaurants participating in the «Taste of Visa Championships,» everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. We want to thank all of the volunteers from the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area who helped make the event so successful, along with our partners from the Xcel Energy Center and Visit Saint Paul. A special thank you to Mayor Chris Coleman for his commitment to the event, and the other city officials who assisted throughout the weekend. The Visa Championships received terrific exposure from the media, especially our partners at NBC and Universal Sports, which televised three nights of competition live, along with a delayed broadcast of the men’s competition on Sunday. The ratings from Saturday night of the senior women’s competition were 17% higher than last year’s Visa Championships. The level of gymnastics displayed at the Visa Championships was truly amazing and is a reflection of the incredible amount of work and effort put in by our athletes and coaches. Every athlete showed the grit and determination it takes to compete among the best in our country. I want to especially congratulate the three senior national champions, Jordyn Wieber, Danell Leyva and Shelby Kisiel, for their Visa Championships all-around success, but USA Gymnastics also takes great pride in the performance of every single athlete who competed in Saint Paul. Please join me in wishing these athletes and coaches the very best as they represent our country at the highest level of our sport in the next few months. Keep an eye on Team USA as they compete at the World Championships and Pan American Games. The Rhythmic World Championships are Sept. 13–26 in Montpellier, France; the Men’s and Women’s Artistic World Championships are in Tokyo, Japan, Oct. 7–16; and the Trampoline and Tumbling World Championships are in Birmingham, England, Nov. 16–19. Competition at the Pan American Games for all four Olympic disciplines runs Oct. 14– 30 in Guadalajara, Mexico. As this issue goes to print we are gearing up for National Gymnastics Day on Sept. 17, and hope to break a world record for most handstands held simultaneously at one time. ixteen-year-old Jordyn Wieber of Gedderts’ Twistars USA, won the U.S. senior women’s title at the 2011 Visa Championships at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn., Aug. 17-20. McKayla Maroney, 15, of All Olympia, and Alexandra Raisman, 17, of Brestyan’s American Gymnastics, finished second and third, respectively. Wieber, the leader after the first night of competition, sealed the victory in the final rotation when she nailed a jam-packed balance beam routine that included a standing back full twist. Her score, a 15.300, was the highest on the event of the evening. She posted a two-day all-around score of 121.300. “I just wanted to come out here and have fun, that’s the most important thing,” the newly-crowned national champion said. “I tried to be really aggressive and confident.” JORDYN

Wieber also won two event titles; bars and floor. On bars, she earned a 29.750 for her routine, which included a huge Tkatchev and double twisting double back dismount. On floor, her routine included a double twisting double back mount and a triple full, winning the title with a score of 29.900. She also scored a 15.800 and a 15.950 on vault each day for her Yurchenko 2.5 and earned a 29.900 two-day score on beam, which was the third highest score on that event.

All-around silver-medalist Maroney claimed the gold medal on the vault with a combined twoday average of 30.700. Maroney launched her first vault, a ALEXANDRA Yurchenko 2.5, RAISMAN high in the air to earn a 16.000 score, the highest on any apparatus in women’s competition. Her second vault was a Yurchenko half on front layout half off. She also competed a 3.5 twist on floor and finished fifth on that event. Maroney’s all-around score was 115.150. “I’m so happy that I did my best and improved on my performance from the first day of competition,” Maroney said. Raisman finished third in the all-around with a score of 114.600. Raisman closed out her Visa Championships with an energetic floor routine, which got the crowd clapping along. She placed third on floor with her impressive and powerful tumbling including a 1.5 to double Arabian, punch front; a piked double Arabian; a triple full; and a double pike dismount. “I’m really happy that I did well,” Raisman said. “I’m especially happy that I was able to hit my uneven bars routine two days in a row.”

Mackenzie Caquatto, 19, of Legacy Elite Gymnastics, finished fourth in the all-around with a score of 112.500 and took second on bars with a 29.700, while teammate Anna Li tied for third on bars (29.450) with Gabrielle Douglas of Chow’s Gymnastics. 2010 World Championships vault gold medalist Alicia Sacramone, 23, of Brestyan’s American Gymnastics, won the balance beam national title, showing an impressive repertoire of skills including a piked front flip mount and double pike dismount. Sacramone’s two-day total on the event was 30.100. The nine-time U.S. national championships participant also placed second on the vault, showing her trademark front handspring Rudi vault and double twisting Yurchenko for a 30.600. Brandie Jay of GK Gym took third on vault with a 27.825. 2008 Olympic team silver medalist Chellsie Memmel of M and M Gymnastics, who was unable to finish her uneven bars routine, finished eighth in the allaround competition. balance beam, scoring a 30.000 for her routine, which included a barani to back handspring and a standing Arabian. Shawn Johnson of Chow’s Gymnastics, recorded scores of 29.200 (vault), 28.600 (bars) and 29.400 (balance beam). Johnson, the 2008 Olympic balance beam champion, finished fourth on beam. Sabrina Vega of Dynamic finished fifth in the all-around with a score of 112.050. Vega, 16, was fourth on floor and fifth on beam. Defending champion and world medalist Rebecca Bross of WOGA, was unable to finish the competition due to injury. Bross, 18, finished second on floor with a 29.500 and eighth on the balance beam with a 27.600.

OHASHI WINS JUNIOR TITLE Katelyn Ohashi of WOGA, led the junior women’s all-around rankings for all eight rotations of the two-day competition, winning her first U.S. junior all-around title at the 2011 Visa Championships. Her all-around total of 120.950 put her ahead of defending champion Kyla Ross of GymMax Gymnastics and Sarah Finnegan of Great American Gymnastics Express in third. “Winning the national title was my goal coming in for a couple of years now. This is so exciting,” Ohashi said. “I have never been this confident in competition before.”

Ohashi, 14, worked with precision on uneven bars, showing a unique L-grip Endo to straddled Jaeger to earn a 30.150 and win the event. On beam, she flawlessly executed a layout back flip with a full twist on the first day of competition to score a 16.100, the highest score of the competition for junior or senior women. Despite a fall on her sheep jump during day two, she posted a 14.950, the second highest score on the event for the day. Combining both days of competition, she won the beam title with a score of 31.050. On floor, Ohashi displayed grace and beauty combined with power as she tumbled a nearly perfect full-twisting double pike. Her score, a 30.050, secured the floor title and the all-around gold medal. Ohashi took fourth on vault with her Yurchenko double twist (29.700).

“My goal was to get top three, so I was pretty happy that I accomplished that,” Ross said. “I was happy that I hit all my routines today (finals day of competition) and that I went out there and did what I know I can do.” GAGE’s Sarah Finnegan, 14, finished third in the all-around with a score of 115.300. She also took third on beam with a score of 29.050 for her difficult routine, which included a standing Arabian and third on floor with a 29.100 performing a stylish, upbeat routine with a tucked full-in, a double Arabian and dismounted with a 1.5 to 2.5. Lexie Priessman, 14, of Cincinnati Gymnastics was loaded with difficulty and finished fourth overall with a score of 115.100. Priessman performed a Yurchenko 2.5, earning the national vault title with a two-day total of 31.550 on the event. She also took second on floor with her mega tumbling including a double twisting double back mount, a 1.5 to 2.5 to stag jump, punch layout front to double twisting front and dismounted with a full-in. Two other standout gymnasts were Mykayla Skinner of Desert Lights who took second on vault with her Yurchenko 2.5 scoring 30.450 and Texas Dream’s Kennedy Baker who performed a layout Gienger and full-in dismount to finish third on bars with a 28.950.

anell Leyva of Team Hilton HHonors, captured his first senior men’s allaround title at the 2011 Visa Championships inside the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. Leyva, 19, wowed the crowd to claim the title with a two-day combined all-around total of 183.800. Leyva, who is from Homestead, Fla., and trains at Universal Gymnastics with stepfather and coach Yin Alvarez, led the entire second night of competition and secured the title on his best event, the high bar. After nearly sticking his double twisting double layout dismount, Leyva embraced Alvarez, lifting him off the ground in celebration.

“It feels great – amazing,” Leyva said after claiming the U.S. national title. “To fulfill one of the goals you put on paper, to be able to scratch one of those off the list, it is an amazing feeling.” JOHN Leyva executed an extremely intricate parallel OROZCO bars routine, performing a peach to Diamidov to earn the title on this event with a score of 32.150. He also won the title on high bar with his exciting high-flying high bar routine complete with a full twisting layout Tkatchev, layout Kovacs and layout double-twisting double-back dismount to score a 33.150 for his two-day total.

Two-time defending champion Jonathan Horton of Team Hilton HHonors, pushed Leyva the entire competition. However, a fall in the fifth rotation of day two on his strongest event, the high bar, made it impossible to catch Leyva, who suffered no major mistakes during either night’s competition. “I made mistakes,” Horton admitted. “It’s hard to beat someone who didn’t make mistakes. I think Danell and I make a great

Horton, who is from Houston, Texas, and trains at Cypress, scored 181.050 points for his two-day all-around effort. He finished third on floor (30.650), rings (30.500) and vault (32.750). He competed a handspring double front half out on vault for just the first time in his career. Competing in his first Visa Championships as

a senior, John Orozco of the U.S. Olympic Training Center, claimed the bronze medal in the all-around competition with a 180.500 total. The 18-year-old Orozco took second on parallel bars with a combined score of 31.450, performing a giant Suarez and Stutz to double pike dismount. The stylish comcom petitor whose hometown is Bronx, N.Y.,

also took third on pommel horse with a 29.100 and tied for third on high bar with Paul Ruggeri of the University of Illinois, both scoring 30.500. Chris Brooks of Hilton HHonors, Cypress Gymnastics finished fourth in the all-around with a score of 178.600. Brooks, 24, from Houston, took third on parallel bars with a score of 31.200 and second on high bar with a score of 31.300.

On the pommel horse, Alexander Naddour, 20, of Norman, Okla./University of Oklahoma, swung smoothly through a tricky single pommel Russian, for the top score of 31.100 on the event. Naddour also finished seventh in the all-around with a score of 175.850.

Rounding out the top 10 in the all-around were C.J. Adrian de los Angeles of Long Beach, Calif. (16-18), and Sean Melton of Orlando, Fla. (14-15), won the junior men’s all-around titles with a two-day score of 166.600 and 167.250, respectively, at the 2011 Visa Championships.

“It’s why we do the sport everyday, why we push ourselves so hard – it’s just awesome,” de los Angeles said of his win. Finishing in a close second was Jonathan Deaton of Longmeadow, Mass., coached by Olympic gold medalist Tim Daggett at Tim Daggett’s Gold Medal Gymnastics and Lorenzo Macaluso, with a score of 166.500. The bronze medalist in the all-around was Jesse Glenn of Northridge, Calif./SCATS Gymnastics, scoring a 166.350.

Leading after the first day in the14–15 yearold competition, Melton, who was the defending champion and trains at Orlando Metro, recorded his highest score of the competition on the vault performing a double twisting Yurchenko for a 30.700. Melton scored a 27.850 on floor, a 26.500 on pommel horse, a 27.000 on still rings, 28.850 on parallel bars, and a 26.350 on the high bar. “Today felt pretty good,” Melton said at the conclusion of the final day. “The first day, I struggled a lot, but I ended up pulling it together and pulling off a performance I am very happy with.” Receiving the 14-15 all-around silver medal was Timothy Wang of Riverside, Calif./South Coast Gymnastics, with a score of 164.850. In the junior division, Sereda added the all-around title to her two individual event titles (ball and clubs). SEREDA WIN RHYTHMIC TITLES Pa./Philadelphia Rhythmic Academy, took first in ribbon (25.175). Sereda and Jazzy Kerber of Highland Park, Ill./North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics, split the four U.S. junior rhythmic gymnastics individual event titles. Sereda, who is the defending junior allaround champion, won the gold medals for both ball (24.900) and clubs (25.900). Kerber, who recently won the JAZZY junior all-around at the KERBER 2011 U.S. Rhythmic Classic, took top honors for both hoop and ribbon, earning scores of 24.980 and 24.700, respectively. The Rhythmic Group from North Shore Rhythmics in Deerfield, Ill., performed with 5 Balls and 3 ribbons/2 hoops in exhibition routines at Visa Championships in U.S. RHYTHMIC preparation for the GROUP TEAM upcoming Rhythmic World Championships and Pan American Games. RAISMAN, ROSS WIN 2011 COVERGIRL CLASSIC ALL-AROUND TITLES

lexandra Raisman of Brestyan’s, and Kyla Ross of Gym Max, won the senior and junior all-around titles, respectively, at the 2011 CoverGirl Classic, held in Chicago, Ill., July 23. Raisman won the title with her 57.250 total. 2008 Olympic team silvermedalist Chellsie Memmel of M&M Gymnastics made a solid return to competition earning a total 56.950 to finish in second place. Sabrina Vega of Dynamic Gymnastics was third at 56.850. 2010 World vault champion Alicia Sacramone of Brestyan’s, competed on three events for the first time since her comeback. She won the vault scoring a 15.100 and also tied for first with Jordyn Wieber of Geddert’s Twistars on balance beam with a 15.200. Wieber, the 2011 AT&T American Cup champion, was first on bars with a score of 15.200, followed by Gabrielle Douglas of Chow’s Gymnastics, at 14.950. Raisman had the top score for the floor exercise at 14.700. Raisman’s first pass was a 1.5 twist to double Arabian, punch front. Vega was second (14.250).

In the junior division, Ross, who trains at Gym Max, scored a 58.850 to win the title. Lexie Priessman of Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy, took second in the all-around with a score of 58.050. Katelyn Ohashi of WOGA was third with a 57.950. On vault, both Priessman and Ross competed a Yurchenko 2.5, scoring a 15.450 and 15.250, respectively, for first and second place. Ross tied with Ohashi on bars with a score of 15.000. Texas Dreams Veronica Hults won beam with a score of 15.050. On floor, Sarah Finnegan of GAGE won the floor title with her 14.500. Finnegan did a nice piked full twisting double back.

LUDVIGSON WINS SILVER MEDAL AT WORLD CUP IN CHINA Kalon Ludvigson of Pocatello, Idaho, earned the silver medal in men’s tumbling at the World Cup in Wuxi City, China, July 3, making this his 15th world medal. Yuliya Brown of Idaho Falls, Idaho, finished sixth among the women. Ludvigson scored a 76.000 to earn second place while China’s Song Yang won the gold scoring 78.700. Russia’s Timofey Podust finished third with a 75.600. In the women’s tumbling event, China’s Fangfang Jia won the gold with a score of 71.20 followed by Russia’s Anna Korobeynikova in second with 69.200 and Lingxi Chen of China in third with a 66.800.

assandra Lim and Brian Kincher of West Coast Training Center began the final night of competition of the 2011 National Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships, the combined routine, a little more than half a point behind Melissa Gong and Ryan Ward of Realis Gymnastics Academy at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, Calif. on July 25. Though Gong and Ward had claimed both the dynamic and balance national titles in the first two days of competition, a slight stumble toward the end of their combined performance opened the door for Lim and Kincher, the hometown favorites.

Lim and Kincher did not let the opportunity pass them by. The pair, competing in their first season together, executed dramatic balance holds that found Lim in a perfect 180 degree split supported by just the right arm of Kincher and daring acrobatics on their way to a 28.524 combined score. The pair compiled a total all-around score of 84.575, edging Gong and Ward’s 83.930 total.

Additionally, Leslie Munoz, Aimee Bruns and Tayler Harris of Realis Gymnastics Academy won the senior elite women’s group title, while Beth Landeche and Nicole Barrilleaux of Crescent City Gymnastics captured the senior elite women’s pair all-around crown. In the junior division, West Coast Training Center once again produced the all-around mixed pair champions with Eirian Smith and Jake Kanavel, who posted the highest single routine score, 28.850, of the entire elite competition with their daring dynamic routine. Smith and Kanavel’s three routine total was 86.600. In addition to Smith and Kanavel, Ginger Burrows and Kerrie and Erica Prestipino of Xtreme Acro & Cheer won the junior elite women’s group title; Bryan Allen and Kyle Bloom of Aerial Tumbling & AcroGymnastics secured the junior Eirian Smith and Jake Kanavel

NCHER CAPTURE XED PAIRS TITLE IONAL ACROBATIC S CHAMPIONSHIPS elite men’s pair title; and Mariah Cockshell and Kennedy Swanson of Acro Explosion took home the junior elite women’s pair title. The 2011 National Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships also brought together more than 500 athletes in Levels 5-10, competing for national all-around titles. In Level 10 competition, Nicholas Jackson, Skye Robinson, Ryan Green and Alexander Ruth of Emilia’s Acro Gymnastics Club claimed the men’s group title, while Olivia Bunton, Abigail Warden and Kyli Pruitt of Mid-American Acro & Tumbling Team won the women’s group championships. Jarrett Darrah and Josh Tucker of All Star Gymnastics and Cheer placed first in the men’s pairs competition and Lillian Robertson and Jessica Renteria of Acrobatic Gymnastics of San Antonio won the gold medal for the women. record number of more than 2,000 athletes competed in the 2011 Trampoline and Tumbling Junior Olympic National Championships, July 10–15, in San Antonio, Texas. In addition to a record number of participants, there was also a record number of spectators filling the 6,500 seats in the Freeman Coliseum. Competition wrapped up for Levels 5–10 in trampoline, double mini-trampoline, synchronized trampoline and tumbling for both men and women. Congratulations to Region 3 who won the Regional All Stars!

he U.S. sent a delegation of 26 members of the senior, junior, and Olympic Development team to the Canada Cup held in Alberta, Canada, July 30, 2011, and won a total of 15 medals in trampoline, double mini, synchro and tumbling competition. Austin White of Newport Coast, Calif./World Elite won the men’s gold medal with his 147.600 and unofficially set a world record for degree of difficulty at 11.600 with a triple front half out into a triple back flip with a full twist. Other U.S. athletes winning gold medals were: Kaylah Whaley of Knoxville, Tenn./Premier Athletics Knoxville North, senior women’s tumbling; Harley Merritt of Auburndale, Fla./Reflex, the novice tumbling title for

women 11-14; Jordan Webb of Tulsa, Okla./Oklahoma Extreme Tumbling, the novice tumbling title for women 15+; and James Lichtenstein of Buffalo Grove, Ill./5 Star Tumbling and Trampoline, junior men’s double mini in novice tumbling. USA WINS TEAM SILVER AT JAPAN CUP

n July 2 the U.S. men’s team won the silver medal at the 2011 Japan Cup at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium’s Main Arena, the site of the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships later this year, finishing just 0.9 points behind Japan. Great Britain was third. Japan posted a 268.150 to win the team title, followed by the USA at 267.250. Great Britain tallied a 263.500 to round out the top three. The U.S. men had the highest team score for pommel horse (45.150) and horizontal bar (44.050), as well as tied for the highest team vault score at 47.050. The team competition format was three gymnasts on each apparatus and all three scores count. The members of the U.S. squad were: Jonathan Horton, Team Hilton HHonors; Steven Legendre of Flower Mound, Texas/Team Hilton HHonors; Danell Leyva, Team Hilton HHonors; Alexander Naddour of Gilbert, Ariz./University 42
