How Lifeguards Make a Significant Contribution to the Society

It is said that drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death in the world. According to the report, around 1 million people around the globe get drowned in a year. This is the main reason why lifeguard jobs have gained so much importance. Lifeguards play an important role in monitoring the activities of swimmers in and around pools, beaches and water parks. Lifeguards prevent accidents by identifying threats early and responding to emergencies quickly. Understandably, lifeguards need to be excellent swimmers and successfully complete Red Cross training or other lifeguard certifications. The role of lifeguards Drowning can happen at any time. Apart from kids and children, the strongest swimmers could be swept out by a RIP current. So, it is important for lifeguards to monitor cautiously to ensure the safety of swimmers. They usually sit on tall chairs in order to see further and identify threats more efficiently. If they find someone is engaged in dangerous activities, they blow a whistle to alert them. Moreover, if someone goes down under water or gets injured, they conduct rescue operations to save the swimmer. Lifeguards are trained to perform emergency rescue procedures. To perform this, they need to have a knowledge about CPR. If a swimmer feels fatigued or at risk for other reasons, a lifeguard dives into the water and helps return the swimmer to safety. Swimming pool lifeguards should provide on-site emergency response in spite of waiting for paramedics to arrive.


Lifeguards also educate people about water safety rules. Their experience and expertise come especially handy in teaching water safety measures to children. Apart from fulfilling these responsibilities, they are supposed to:           

Maintain a professional attitude, as they are representative of lifeguard companies and commercial swimming pool owners. Arrange or be present in all scheduled staff meetings Communicate and enforce all UREC regulations and pool rules Take part in staff training or extend help in facilitating such activities Perform patron surveillance with a rescue tube Use all senses to remain alert while guarding Provide support and co-ordinate with a team during special events Keep a record of daily participation numbers and also maintain daily activity reports Check the chemical level in water and record results Set up the pool for various activities such as laps, classes, etc. Perform other duties as assigned
