Although all pool lifeguard jobs require different skill sets, there are four basic characteristics that all lifeguards must have: 1) Physical Fitness 2) Focus and diligence in a distracting and fatiguing environment. 3) Calm under stress and pressure 4) People Skills


Physical Fitness Physical fitness could be a cornerstone of an efficient and effective pool lifeguard jobs. although by no means does one need to be an Olympic Swimmer, you want to be ready to swim at a moderate pace at extended periods of times. together with solid swimming skills, you need to be very comfortable within the water and be ready to tread water for extended periods of your time. you need to also have enough strength to rescue, tow, and support victims for short to moderate periods of your time.


Focus and diligence in a distracting and fatiguing environment The sun heats the beach to a slumber-inducing temperature of 90F and there is a steady breeze within the air. In an surroundings like this, it is simple to let your eyes relax and be a part of the lots that are without aim 'people watching' at the beach. Not for lifeguards. Despite of these distractions, it's important that lifeguards stay focused and diligent in their duties.


Calm under stress and pressure The most important skill every lifeguard certifications includes in their training is working in clamly under stress and pressure. The ability to remain calm and confident in a stressful environment is a MUST for lifeguards.


People Skills As a lifeguard, the public expects lots from you. whether or not somebody desires to understand the water temperature or somebody is complaining about a kid kicking sand in their face, you've got to act with the general public in a skilled and friendly manner. As your expertise as a lifeguard will increase, your ability to resolve the public's inquiries and conflicts can improve.
