H3 - Scapes Thesis Project Masters of Architecture Year 5 Given the state of present-day geo-political affairs, attempts at restoring normalcy within a pandemic, coping with rising costs of living and caring for family members on top of other daily stresses, it comes as no surprise that mental and physical health had plummeted across the board. THESIS : H3-Scapes

THESIS : H3-Scapes

Recent surveys and interviews conducted by Channel News Asia (CNA) have revealed that 38% of the population had indicated a decline in mental health due to the onset of the pandemic and that more individuals are facing burnout and feelings of apathy. In the past few years, the discussion of mental health and its associated topics of wellness, happiness and condition management have inadvertently become a hot topic for discussion. Apart from focusing on physical ailments, such discussions have also opened up the topic of health and psychological considerations in a spatial sense, making the shortcomings in our urban provisions and lack of consideration for wellness aspects glaringly obvious. The thesis asserts that architecture and urban designs have a significant role and influence in alleviating our urban issues of poor health, mental wellness and stress. The thesis reimagines the development process of Singapore which is informed by psychological theories instead of being entirely motivated by social, political and pragmatic drivers. Such landscapes showcase the plugging of “gaps” within the urban fabric, the introduction of “urban sanctuaries” (a typology aimed at promoting different aspects of wellness in urban living) and highlight the pursuit of health through holistic (both eudaimonic and hedonistic) design considerations. Through such interventions, a townscape which facilitates the production of happiness, efficiency and rest would be able to exist alongside the traditional live-work-play model. Keywords: Happiness, health, mental wellness, urban interventions, architecture

Research I According to a study conducted by the Institute of mental health (IMH), approximately 13% of over 1000 participants have reported exhibiting symptoms of anxiety and depression during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

THESIS : H3-Scapes

THESIS : H3-Scapes

Another study in 2021 has also revealed that Singapore has been ranked as the “unhappiest workforce in the world” with 48% of respondents indicating that they were dissatisfied with work. With reference to such statistics, it is evident that declining overall wellness is an issue that is prominent amongst all demographics, potentially contributing to decreased productivity and increased healthcare expenditure. Although it is overly idealistic to assume that revamping the built environment alone is capable of bringing about enhanced wellness for the population, this thesis adopts an optimistic stance towards architecture and urban planning’s role in the “production of positive outcomes” through addressing the ever-changing physical and social landscape. By considering psychological theories and salutogenic design principles, the wellness journey towards attaining overall well-being becomes less elusive.

Being bombarded with a slew of black swan events combined with the onset of COVID-19 has forced us to adapt quickly to new living and working conditions. Encountering burnout and declining overall wellness is becoming a widespread public health concern. 6

Looking past the built environment, social interactions and individual’s psyche, we see another version of ourselves, from a purely biological standpoint. When we take a step back to consider the biopsychosocial model, it becomes evident that the environment affects our health, interactions and perceptions of space and vice versa.

THESIS : H3-Scapes

THESIS : H3-Scapes

+

In land-scarce Singapore, space designed for well-being are limited and targeted largely at hedonia (experiences of pleasure and enjoyment) and not eudaimonia (experiences of meaning and purpose). While hedonia is associated with relaxing or fun activities eudaimonia is related to activities of challenge, that require more exertion and purpose.

8

The continual renewal of masterplans and urban regeneration projects is a testament to the following looking planning parameters stipulated by the government. Consequently, the challenges of urban living have also taken root; such challenges are pressing and would require the provision of quality spaces to effectively offset them.

Green and blue spaces are commonly associated with the creation of salutogenic and restful environments. Wellness restoration and levels of happiness are factors which are directly impacted by the environmental ambience.

Psychological theories THESIS : H3-Scapes

THESIS : H3-Scapes

The biopsychosocial model and salutogenesis Architecture and psychology are closely related domains of study, and the impact that the environment has on humans and vice versa have been widely studied. Although psychological studies are mostly pertaining to stress, wellness and medical care, these same finding can also be mapped to architecture and spatial design. This model ties in with salutogenesis which acknowledges that the environment engages humans on both the cognitive and emotional levels, affecting the individual’s thoughts and actions. Mapping of spaces and integration of psychological theories results in different profiling and categorization of different spaces, it can be observed how eudaimonic happiness usually exists as a bi-product of “hedonic activities”.

Site Studies Analysis and documentation

THESIS : H3-Scapes

THESIS : H3-Scapes

The plot selected is flanked by Biopolis and the nearby residential HDBs, and also sandwiched between Commonwealth and Buona Vista MRT, next to the “rail corridor”. Potential user groups include students from Institutes of higher learning, staff from R&D establishments, residents and potential visitors who are highly stressed and/or bored and require curated and consolidated spaces and programs for hedonia and eudemonia (H&E).

Observations and sensory mapping was conducted to ascertain the different environments and spatial experiences throughout and around the site. 12

Design Ideation Early design concepts and inspiration

THESIS : H3-Scapes

THESIS : H3-Scapes

Inspiration for the design concept was derived from the rail corridor, an existing recreational area used primarily for exercise. By modifying the original straight route into a meandering one, which directs visitors to the various activity zones, allows the rail corridor to be better integrated into the on-site experience. The parallel walls that mimic the railway track of the past, provide a stark contrast to the dense vegetation and seemingly sporadic layout of the build ings and hardscapes. Lastly, waterways and a pond, which were onsite in the 1940s, were traced and reinstated. Therefore, indicating how the project is a tribute to the past and a celebration of the present.

Deliverables “Card Decks”

THESIS : H3-Scapes

THESIS : H3-Scapes

To develop guiding principles for informing design and program decisions, three card decks were generated. The first deck presents the “wish list” of potential user group, things which frequenters most desire and value. Common responses from in person interviews with residents and works were that they would like to be in closer proximity to water bodies and outdoor break out spaces. The second deck indicates the hedonistic and eudaimonistic goals which were distilled from the foundational principles from research findings. The desires of the users were evaluated in conjunction with different tennets of wellness and happiness, resulting in a possible pool of programs which were later integrated into the final design.

Co-Play! @ The Grandstand Year 5, Semester 1 In Collaboration with Wendy Hau

Co - Play!

Co - Play!

By the end of 2023, the Singapore Land Authority is set to repossess the plot of land housing the Grandstand and its surrounding areas. In response to this imminent transition, the primary objective of our studio was to devise compelling value propositions for the Grandstand, while maintaining a delicate balance the community’s needs and ecological considerations. Extensive site studies and background research led us to conclude that an adaptive re-use strategy would be most ideal for future developments. The significant proportion of tenants existing in the Grandstand includes enrichment lesson centers, recreational activity spaces, eateries and a children’s therapy center. The existing programs were leveraged upon and formed the basis for the creation of a playful, stigma-free facility that would offer a one -stop solution for therapy and enrichment services. The additional features and minor alterations to structural components would not only allow for cost savings but would also promote knowledge sharing and economies of scale, in a curated environment which embraces and celebrates natural elements on-site. Keywords: therapy, biophilia, urban redevelopment, architecture

Co - Play!

Creating a one-stop play therapy facility for sharing @ Grandstand

Our design approach aimed to incorporate biophilic elements to foster comfortable and conducive learning atmospheres while safeguarding the habitats of the diverse critters residing in the lush vegetation surrounding the Grandstand. This dual focus as the core of the redevelopment vision would therefore offer a relevant and fresh proposition for stakeholders to navigate the Grandstands future in its evolving urban context.
