DEAN CURRY
Our 2019 USC Architectural Guild Annual Dinner marks multiple milestones for the USC School of Architecture. This year we celebrate the 100th year of the School’s founding and the legacy of our graduates and faculty within this centennial, and the 60th anniversary of the USC Architectural Guild. As an academic cultural institution—an advocate, partner and resource for urban design and development, architectural innovation, technology and conservation infrastructures —USC Architecture is becoming a leader in transforming architectural education from a singular domain of influence to a collaborative resource. With a legacy of design excellence and innovation, the School is dedicated to producing ‘citizen architects,’ the next generation of architects and design leaders making direct contributions to the improvement of their communities.
60th Architectural Guild Dinner
This year, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the USC Architectural Guild. The Guild serves as the nexus that links diverse leaders in the architecture, design, finance, construction and real estate industries with our students and our graduates, contributing unique mentoring and professional development to the overall student experience. Guild members and volunteers dedicate their time and resources to support hundreds of students through workshops, mentoring sessions, internships and scholarships. We sincerely thank the Guild for the invaluable support they provide the School. This year, we celebrate the 100th year of the School of Architecture’s founding and three deserving honorees at this year’s Annual Dinner. Distinguished alumnus Corinne Verdery will receive this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award; renowned alumnus Gin D. Wong will posthumously receive the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award; and Victor MacFarlane of MacFarlane Partners will receive the second annual Distinguished Business Leadership Award. All three award recipients have created a lasting legacy in Southern California and beyond and share the School’s vision for innovative urban design/development and city-making. Gin D. Wong had a prolific impact on the Los Angeles landscape. His works with Gin Wong Associates and William Pereira included the LAX theme building, ARCO Building, and the Union 76 gas station in Beverly Hills. His contributions to USC were vast and included his tenure as Architectural Guild president and USC Life Trustee, and the donation of his namesake auditorium at the School of Architecture, the Gin D. Wong, FAIA Conference Center. He epitomized the drive, creativity and dedication of a USC Trojan architect. Corinne Verdery’s many accomplishments demonstrate the various paths one can take with a USC Architecture education. As executive vice president of development

at Caruso, she has been instrumental in expanding the company’s world-class real estate portfolio, including the recent addition of the five-star Rosewood Miramar Beach hotel in Montecito. Her previous tenure with NBCUniversal included significant commitment to the upgrade of Hollywood’s Universal Studios, bringing an entirely new experience to guests of the theme park as well as generating jobs and stimulating economic activity. With 40 years of real estate experience, Victor MacFarlane’s work intersects development, business, social equity and urbanism, making him a unique and deserving recipient of this year’s Distinguished Business Leadership Award. His firm, MacFarlane Partners, pioneered the urban investment concept among international real estate managers. Today, MacFarlane Partners is an industry leader in principled and thoughtful urban development. MacFarlane Partners is codeveloping the Park Fifth complex in Los Angeles’ Pershing Square and served as development partner on the Hotel & Residences at L.A. LIVE. We also acknowledge the support of our students, faculty and staff in making USC Architecture a fantastic place to study, research and learn. We thank all of our Architectural Guild members, USC Architecture Board of Councilors, and the legions of supporters who contribute to the ongoing efforts to make our School a place of access and opportunity.
Very sincerely,
Milton S. F. Curry, Dean and Della & Harry MacDonald Dean’s Chair in Architecture

LETTER— BOARD OF
COUNCILORS CO-CHAIRS
60th Architectural Guild Dinner
Welcome to the 60th Anniversary USC Architectural Guild Annual Dinner! We’re delighted to be honoring the extraordinary leadership of three individuals whose legacies carry on in the Trojan Spirit. On behalf of the Board of Councilors, we salute our honorees, Dean Milton Curry’s leadership at the School’s helm, and the strong partnership with the Architectural Guild. As we reflect upon the School’s design, urbanism and architectural contributions over the past 100 years, we also acknowledge 60 years of incredible work from the Guild. The Guild has supported hundreds of students, contributing thousands of volunteer hours and millions of dollars. While these numbers tell a powerful story of volunteerism and philanthropy, they also speak to the commitment of individual Guild members in their support of our students. Through scholarships, mentoring, career development programming, global studies support and more, Guild members go the extra mile.

PRESIDENT
60th Architectural Guild Dinner

AL Hello and welcome! On behalf of the USC Architectural Guild, thank you for joining us this evening as we celebrate six decades of dedication to enriching student programming and funding scholarships at the USC School of Architecture. Serving as president to an auxiliary so vital to the growth and prosperity of the School and its thriving students is a great honor. The Guild provides guidance and insight into real-world experiences for students beyond the classroom, influencing a new generation of design thinkers. We collaborate with one another and work toward building and strengthening relationships for the School with the industry through networking opportunities and knowledge exchange for professionals in the Los Angeles community. We strive to encourage our peers—leaders in architecture, design, construction, engineering, finance, and real estate development—to give back and support programming, complementary to an exceptional USC education, that help architectural students find purpose, meaning, and fulfillment in their pursuits.
The countless hours and funds that have positively impacted student experiences would not be possible without your contributions. Thank you to the event’s generous sponsors, to the Guild Board, Architectural Guild Members, and Architectural Guild Life Members of the past, present, and future for your incredible efforts. With your continued support, the Guild looks forward to advancing the mission of the School for the next 60 years and beyond, evolving, progressing, and adapting to new student needs, and making a lasting impact on the design community. We hope you enjoy the program and are inspired, as I am, by tonight’s distinguished honorees. Chuck Whitaker Principal, John Labib + Associates President, USC Architectural Guild

Gin D. Wong, FAIA (1922–2017) was a prolific architect credited with shaping the postwar landscape of Los Angeles. As founder and chairman of Gin Wong Associates, Wong designed many Southern California landmarks, including the 33-story skyscraper at 1055 W. 7th St. (formerly known as the ARCO Tower) and the Automobile Club of Southern California headquarters campus in Orange County. His first professional design was the famous Union 76 gas station in Beverly Hills, which recently received landmark status. After graduating from USC Architecture in 1950, Wong joined William L. Pereira’s firm, Pereira & Luckman. When that partnership disbanded in 1958, he helped found William L. Pereira & Associates, the architectural firm responsible for the 1961 master plan for the USC University Park Campus and USC buildings such as the Olin Hall of Engineering and Stauffer Hall of Science. As director of design for Pereira, he was responsible for designing the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CBS Television City, and the 32-story USC
Tower at South Park Center at 1150 S. Olive St. (formerly known as the AT&T Center). He was president of the firm during the design of such landmark buildings as the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco and Union Oil Center (now Los Angeles Center Studios). Wong founded his own firm in 1973 and worked on projects such as the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills and the Korean Air Hyatt Hotel in Seoul, South Korea. Gin Wong Associates was also responsible for a significant restoration of USC’s original building, which was rededicated as the Widney Alumni House following completion of the work in 1977. A USC Life Trustee, Wong’s service to the university included a term as president of the USC Architectural Guild and the donation of his namesake auditorium at the School of Architecture, the Gin D. Wong, FAIA Conference Center.

Architecture is such a complex business. Neither an art or science, and we can’t do it alone—we need builders, we need engineers, money; you need a client. I happen to believe in simplicity. Certain things call for certain materials; we stick to that and don’t add any more to it. We don’t embellish it; I don’t believe in embellishment. — Gin D. Wong, FAIA Interview

VERDERY Corinne Verdery is executive vice president of development at Caruso, the Los Angeles-based real estate company. Caruso’s world-class portfolio consists of nearly 20 properties, including awardwinning retail, residential and mixed-use developments. The portfolio has recently added the 5-star Rosewood Miramar Beach Resort in Montecito. In her role, Corinne oversees acquisitions, property entitlements and project development, and her focus is on doubling the collection of Caruso properties in California. Prior to joining Caruso, Verdery served as chief real estate development officer at NBCUniversal. In that position, she was responsible for overseeing the 25-year $1.6 billion NBCUniversal Evolution Plan, a vital component to the company’s overall long-term success. Verdery was also SVP of Oasis West Realty, where she successfully led the development and entitlement process of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and Residences in Beverly Hills, which included the passage of a citywide vote.
Verdery graduated cum laude from USC School of Architecture and magna cum laude from Pepperdine University Graziadio School of Business. She is married to Tyler Verdery, a media executive with AEG Global Partnerships. They have 14-year-old twin daughters, Emma and Isabelle, who attend The Archer School for Girls and are active in Archer’s drama and music theater programs.

MACFARLANE Victor MacFarlane is chairman and chief executive officer of MacFarlane Partners, a real estate investment management and development firm he founded in 1987 that acquires, develops and manages properties on behalf of institutional investors and its own account. Victor has 40 years of experience working in property development, acquisitions, asset management and portfolio management on behalf of some of the world’s largest institutions. Under Victor’s leadership, MacFarlane Partners pioneered the urban investment concept among institutional real estate managers in the 1990s and today is an industry leader in urban/smart-growth development, having invested $13 billion in properties in major urban markets nationwide. Victor began his career with Aetna Life & Casualty Company and later developed and managed, for his own account, an award-winning apartment community in Denver. In 1996, he sold the core separate account investment management business of MacFarlane Partners to GE Capital and then served for three years as chief executive officer of GE Capital Investment Advisors. At the end of his contractual commitment with GE Capital in 1999, he began rebuilding MacFarlane Partners as an investment manager focusing on urban properties and other high-yielding investments that, at its peak, managed $20 billion in real estate assets.
The firm in recent years has refocused itself as a real estate operating and development company, while maintaining its urban investment management business. Victor is a past recipient of the National Inner City Economic Leadership Award from the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City, the 2008 Executive of the Year Award and a Lifetime Achievement in Urban Real Estate Investment and Development Award from the Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce, and a Distinguished Alumni Award from the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh. He also holds an honorary doctor of law degree from the University of the District of Columbia. Victor serves on the boards of directors of Site Centers Corp. and the Real Estate Executive Council; the advisory board of the Robert Toigo Foundation; the board of advisors for UCLA School of Law; and the board facilities committee of Stanford Hospital & Clinics. He also is a member and former director of the Pension Real Estate Association and a member and former trustee of the Urban Land Institute. Victor holds a juris doctor degree from UCLA, an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor’s degree in university studies from the University of New Mexico.
