DEAN’S
NOTE
USC Architecture is a dynamic platform for educating and inspiring citizen architects to analyze problems and create design solutions that both respond to the challenges of our time and embrace the promise of a better built environment. For 100 years, USC Architecture faculty and graduates have pushed beyond the traditional boundaries of the field to pioneer many paradigm-shifting new practices of architecture. Deeply rooted in the city of Los Angeles and also intensely connected to global concerns, USC architects and scholars work shoulder to shoulder with our surrounding communities to develop, empower, and leverage local insight that enables them to become intelligent and intrepid practitioners, and forge creative solutions. For 100 years, USC Architecture faculty and graduates have pushed beyond the traditional boundaries of the field to pioneer many paradigm-shifting new practices of architecture. From innovative post-war housing programs and the advent of California Modernism to some of the 20th and 21st century’s most influential works, this vibrant tradition of ambitious and creative thinking is the driving force that propels USC Architecture, encouraging students and faculty to defy constraints and reimagine the possibilities of the field. USC Architecture is future-focused, with academic programs in architecture, landscape architecture and urbanism, building systems and technologies and conservation, with joint degrees and certificates with other schools at USC. The school has global programs in Asia and Europe and will be expanding to Latin America. The school’s faculty execute research and creative work in Southern California, California’s Central Valley, and other global locations. Recent symposia and topics of emphasis for the school include architecture, democracy and capitalism; technology in the public sphere; and design and justice. This is an exciting time to be in the discipline of architecture, and it is an exciting time to be at the USC School of Architecture located in Los Angeles!

Wes Jones is a partner in Jones, Partners: Architecture, a California-based architectural practice founded in 1993. While Design Partner at HHPJ, his technologically inspired designs for completed buildings and theoretical projects received acclaim for their critical engagement with the contemporary cultural scene and their disciplinary sophistication. His eight Progressive Architecture Design Awards include recognition for the Astronauts’ Memorial at Kennedy Space Center and the $180M South Campus Chiller Plant for UCLA. The work of Jones and J,P:A has been featured in countless publications and exhibitions, and can be found in the permanent collections of most leading design museums, including SFMoMA, CCA, and FrAC. He received an AB with Highest Honors from the University of California, Berkeley and an M.Arch with Distinction from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design.
A USC Architecture alumnus and the founder and design principal of Synthesis Design + Architecture, Huang joined the USC Architecture faculty in 2011. He is an award-winning architect, designer, and educator specializing in the integrated application of material performance, emergent design technologies, and digital fabrication in contemporary architectural practice. His work spans all scales ranging from high-rise towers and mixed-used developments to temporary pavilions and bespoke furnishings. He received his M.Arch from the Architectural Association and his B.Arch from USC.
Alison B. Hirsch, FAAR, is a landscape theorist, designer, and historian. Her design and written work focus on how understanding cultural practices, social histories and memories can contribute to the design of meaningful places. She has recently immersed herself in work on the production landscapes of California’s Great Central Valley, focused most particularly on the San Joaquin Valley as a landscape of extremes that embodies the most pressing (socio)environmental questions of our day, particularly as they pertain to global food production. She was awarded a Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts Research and Development Grant in 2019 and the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) Fellowship for Innovation and Leadership (2020-2021). Hirsch is also currently working on a book, The Performative Landscape, which emphasizes sociocultural dynamics as catalysts of physical design.
Doug Noble is a co-founder of the Facade Tectonics Institute, established in 2007 as a university-based research and education organization hosting conferences and publishing research focusing on building facade technology. He also founded the CLIPPER Lab at USC with Karen Kensek in 1991 to support research about computers in architecture and design. With Kensek, he conducted early computer-based architecture design studio experiments. Noble is passionate about supporting emerging professionals and academics and created, with Kensek, the “NotLY: Not Licensed Yet” support system for individuals preparing for the Architect Registration Exam (ARE). He is a graduate of the doctoral program in Design Theories and Methods (DTM) in the Department of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley.
From 2000-2011, Trudi Sandmeier worked for the Los Angeles Conservancy, the largest local historic preservation nonprofit in the U.S., holding the titles of Preservation Advocate, Broadway Initiative Coordinator and Director of Education. She co-founded and currently serves as president of the nonprofit Will Rogers Ranch Foundation, an organization dedicated to the ongoing resto-ration, rehabilitation, and preservation of Will Rogers State Historic Park. In addition, she serves as secretary of the Docomomo Southern California chapter, a board member of the Historic Preservation Education Foundation, a member of the re:code LA – Zoning Advisory Committee - Historic Preservation Working Group (Planning, City of Los Angeles), and as part of the Education Committee of the California Preservation Foun-dation. Sandmeier holds a B.A. in History from the University of California, Los Angeles and an M.A. in Historic Preservation Planning from Cornell University.

The AIAS organization serves as a resource arm for the students of USC at the School of Architecture. The American Institute of Architecture students is the national coalition of students and is based on campuses nationwide. This organization provides the support and resources for the integration of students with their professional counterparts through events planned by the board. USC ASLA is the USC student chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. The organization hosts a series of workshops and professional networking events throughout the year and encourages collaboration across disciplines. The student leaders are dedicated to fostering communication and advancing student development and opportunities within the School of Architecture and reaching our networks across the greater Los Angeles region. We hope to be a strong resource for students entering the program and are available to answer any questions on being new to the city and/or being an advocate for landscape architecture practice. The Graduate Architecture Student Association is an organization comprised and representative of the USC School of Architecture graduate student body. The purpose of this organization is to explore and promote academic and career issues related to the field of architecture. We represent the concerns and needs of all of the graduate student body by providing interdisciplinary exchanges, and provide insight of special interests to its students. Our goal is also to help create memories and connections that will make your time here at USC memorable by working to improve all aspects of the graduate student experience. The National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS) Chapter at the University of Southern California strives to enhance the USC Architecture community by promoting the cultural backgrounds and experiences of our minority students. We do this through events and activities that benefit all students and faculty members as well as the community that we live in. The Student Association of Women Architects is dedicated to the advancement and support of women in the field of architecture. SAWA-USC encourages and fosters high levels of women’s achievement in design through conversation, networking, mentorship, scholarship, and more. SAWA-USC cultivates awareness of the value of equality in the workplace. SAWA-USC fosters an empowering environment for women and provides students the opportunity to learn from women faculty, alumni, and professionals practicing in the field of architecture.
