DEAN’S NOTE

B LU E P R I N T S P. 2 1

USC Architecture is a dynamic platform for educating and inspiring citizen architects to analyze problems and create design solutions that both respond to the challenges of our time and embrace the promise of a better built environment. This past year has tightened the focus on architecture’s role in calibrating its responses to climate precarity and social and racial justice. Our School is committed to utilizing the powerful agency of architecture thinking to make transformative change. USC Architecture is future-focused, with academic programs in architecture, landscape architecture and urbanism, building systems and technologies, and conservation, with joint degrees and certificates with other schools at USC. Active faculty research occurs in areas of broad interest including housing, landscape justice, performative technologies, city design, density and segregation, gentrification and urban conservation. USC Architecture is a place of experimentation, risk-taking and leadership. From innovative post-war housing programs and the advent of California Modernism to some of the 20th and 21st century’s most influential works, this vibrant tradition of ambitious and creative thinking is the driving force that propels USC Architecture, encouraging students and faculty to defy constraints and reimagine the possibilities of the field. Situated in Los Angeles, the School embraces the dynamic urban realm that is enriched by the nation’s most diverse populous and a constellation of cutting-edge arts and cultural institutions. Our academic and research initiatives are global - with active projects in Asia, Latin America and California’s Central Valley and Border regions. At USC Architecture, we value the diversity of our students, faculty, staff and alumni. Your individual perspective and the collective culture of our students propels new questions and the production of new knowledge. We hope that you will choose to join this beloved community, becoming the newest cohort of citizen architects, designers and scholars! Milton S. F. alvinhua@usc.edu A USC Architecture alumnus and the founder and design principal of Synthesis Design + Architecture, Huang joined the USC Architecture faculty in 2011. He is an award-winning architect, designer, and educator specializing in the integrated application of material performance, emergent design technologies, and digital fabrication in contemporary architectural practice. His work spans all scales ranging from high-rise towers and mixed-used developments to temporary pavilions and bespoke furnishings. Alison B. Hirsch, FAAR, is a landscape theorist, designer, and historian. Her design and written work focus on how understanding cultural practices, social histories and memories can contribute to the design of meaningful places. She has recently immersed herself in work on the production landscapes of California’s Great Central Valley, focused most particularly on the San Joaquin Valley as a landscape of extremes that embodies the most pressing (socio) environmental questions of our day, particularly as they pertain to global food production. She was awarded a Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts Research and Development Grant in 2019 and the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) Fellowship for Innovation and Leadership (2020-2021). Hirsch is also currently working on a book, The Performative Landscape, which emphasizes sociocultural dynamics as catalysts of physical design.
