2 63 rd USC ARCHITECTURAL GUILD ANNUAL AWARDS

Iam delighted to celebrate the 63rd Annual Architectural Guild Awards with you. This year’s theme, Celebrating the Creatives, commemorates the artists, architects, and design leaders who embrace the complexities of social, environmental, and political challenges in the built environment.

It’s a privilege to acknowledge tonight’s honorees for their passion, dedication, and tireless efforts towards creating unique and impactful solutions for some of our world’s most pressing societal issues. They—along with builders, planners, and investors—create and make spaces in the world for dynamic, diverse communities to thrive.

As you know, USC School of Architecture is a premier global design school on the forefront of the intersection of media, technology, design, and culture. Our location in the vibrant and diverse city of Los Angeles provides a fertile ground for limitless creativity and inspirational leadership.

Our 2023 USC Architectural Guild honorees follow in the footsteps of a storied legacy of faculty and alumni who have pushed beyond the prescribed boundaries of architecture to pioneer new practices. They innovate across their fields and disciplines and truly inspire us.

We begin with our Citizen Architect Award. Issa Rae, whose work transcends traditional artistic boundaries, embodies the true spirit of the Citizen Architect. We honor her efforts to accelerate creative change in communities by developing local businesses and talent, and expanding the entertainment industry’s footprint in South Los Angeles.

WELCOME DEAN WILLOW BAY

It is our great pleasure to welcome you this evening on behalf of the USC School of Architecture’s Board of Councilors.

As we await the appointment of the school’s 16th Dean, we warmly acknowledge Interim Dean Willow Bay’s deft and energetic leadership in the interim role at the helm of the school. Dean Willow Bay has guided us through this transitional year focusing on the fundamentals: students, faculty, and facilities.

Additionally, we applaud and commend the USC Architectural Guild Board of Directors and President, Jenna Knudsen ’97, for unparalleled volunteer leadership in service to our students and in shattering all previous records with the fundraising and attendance success of this event. It has demonstrated unfaltering support to the academic progress and career-readiness of our students. We thank the Guild for immeasurable hours of volunteerism, professional networking, and successful fundraising on behalf of the school.

In creating the CITIZEN ARCHITECT AWARD category, the School sought to highlight and celebrate the contributions of architects and design leaders who, in multidimensional capacities, embrace the complexities of social, environmental, and political concerns. By broadening the definition of the architect, it compels us to view their contributive roles to society more broadly—whether it be in climate and the environment, housing and homelessness, transportation and mobility, public infrastructure, social justice, or art and culture.

With her own unique flare and infectious sense of humor, Rae first received attention for her award-winning web series and the accompanying New York Times best-seller, “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.” She created and starred in the Peabody-award-winning HBO series “Insecure” which garnered her multiple Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominations. Rae has also made her mark on the big screen, starring in “The Photograph” and “The Lovebirds.”

In 2020 Rae formed HOORAE, a multi-faceted media company that develops content across mediums in an effort to continue to break boundaries in storytelling and representation. HOORAE is comprised of HOORAE Media for film, tv and digital; Raedio, the music label, music supervision company, and “audio everywhere” company; and ColorCreative, its management division. Via HOORAE’s WarnerMedia deal, Issa has also expanded her Executive Producer slate with the Emmy-award nominated “A Black

Lady Sketch Show”, the fan-favorite docuseries “Sweet Life”, and the upcoming HBOMax series, “Rap Sh*t”. Rae’s commitment to South LA is evident in both her personal and professional pursuits.

After planting roots near her childhood home, Issa decided to set up the HOORAE headquarters in the heart of South LA. Her participation in the non-profit organization Destination Crenshaw furthers her mission of celebrating Black Angelenos and her ownership in Hilltop Cafe + Kitchen provides much-needed jobs and opportunities for local residents as well as a space for creatives to unlock their potential. Additionally, as co-owner of the Black owned and operated hair care line, Sienna Naturals, Rae intends to continue to reimagine Black wellness and beauty. Sienna Naturals is a performance-driven vegan hair care line rooted in sustainability and intentionality and was awarded Cosmopolitan’s “Holy Grail Beauty Award” in 2021.

Michael Hackman is the chief executive officer of Hackman Capital Partners, which he founded in 1986. Under his leadership, the company has become a global real estate investor, operator, and developer.

As the world’s largest owner of independent studios, the company has managed over 500 tenants worldwide, including Amazon Studios, Apple, HBO, CBS, ABC, Columbia Pictures, and Warner Brothers. With its affiliate, The MBS Group, it is the industry’s premier studio operator and provider of production services, supporting more than 500 active sound stages and 450 productions a year from its network of more than 100 locations in seven countries.

Before entering the studio and media arena in 2014, Hackman Capital Partners concentrated on the industrial marketplace, where it amassed more than 400 buildings

nationwide. As the demand in urban-infill markets increased, Hackman Capital Partners expanded its focus and became an early pioneer of transforming vintage industrial warehouses into creative office space for media and high-tech tenants.

Michael is committed to many philanthropic causes. In 2020, he was pivotal in the development of the Changing Lenses initiative, which promotes diversity and inclusion in the film industry through job training, mentorships, and financial assistance. The program is now being individually tailored for each of the company’s studios across the globe.

Michael is a past trustee for the Winward School in Los Angeles and Willows School in Culver City. He serves as co-board member of St. John’s Hospital, and a member of the executive board of the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles.

Jim House, FAIA has focused his career on the technical development of projects in ambitious architectural collaborations, working with over a hundred different design firms. His ability to direct complex teams, and his development of innovative project management and delivery strategies, have led to long-term relationships with many dynamic entertainment, institutional and development clients.

Hailing from the farming community of Brawley in southeastern California, Jim obtained a B.Arch. degree from the USC School of Architecture in 1981. Initially a student intern, he later was a Project Architect in the office of USC alumnus Gin Wong, and subsequently in the Los Angeles office of Trojan-led firm Langdon Wilson Mumper, where he initially began leading projects in collaborations with well-known design firms. Launched with partner Doug Robertson in 1996, House & Robertson Architects has remained focused exclusively on collaborations with noteworthy design firms and has grown to encompass over sixty architects in three offices.

Jim maintains strong connections to USC, serving on the School of Architecture’s Board of Councilors, a former Architectural Guild board member, and as a visiting lecturer in the Master of Real Estate Development program. As part of his commitment to growing the strength and diversity of the next generation of Architects, Jim has provided ongoing support to the school’s A-Lab Architecture Development program for high school students, and he sponsors the Jim House, FAIA Building Performance Scholarship, awarded annually to students with a strong interest in building systems and materials.

Formally trained in architecture and landscape architecture, Mark Rios has long viewed the two disciplines as inseparable. Mark founded Rios Associates in 1985, and under his leadership, the firm developed an international reputation for its groundbreaking multidisciplinary approach. In 2020, the firm was renamed RIOS to acknowledge its focus on collaboration across design disciplines, including architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture, experience design, environmental graphics, and product design.

Mark practices with a singular vision: to imagine, design, and build complete environments. His eclectic interests, innate curiosity, and ability to see things from multiple perspectives propel the firm beyond the borders of architecture and landscape architecture to incorporate the creative alchemy of this multidisciplinary approach to design.

The firm’s client list is as diverse as the services it provides, including entertainment studios, commercial developers, cultural and educational institutions, city agencies, hotels and restaurants, and private individuals. Every project that bears the firm’s stamp traces its lineage to Mark’s vision for a transdisciplinary practice. Commissions

range from the design of public parks to plazas and streets, to city-shaping districts, as well as private gardens, furniture, and products. In 2021, Mark established the cafe ware company notNeutral. Today these thoughtfully designed products can be spotted in specialty coffee shops, hotels, restaurants, and homes around the globe.

His projects have been widely published in over 1,000 national and international books and periodicals. RIOS has received nearly 100 professional design awards, including a 2022 ASLA Award of Excellence for Palm Springs Downtown Park, a 2020 AIA Los Angeles’ “Best of Millennium” recognition for Grand Park, Fast Company’s 2017 Innovation by Design Award recognizing Timeless Public Space for Grand Park and the 2007 Firm Award by the American Institute of Architects California Council.

Mark was Chairman of Landscape Architecture at USC from 2001 to 2007 and has been on the faculty at UCLA. He was elevated to AIA Fellow in 1999 and to ASLA Fellow in 2006. Mark received his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from USC, and both Master of Architecture and Master of Landscape Architecture degrees from Harvard University.

USC Architecture is a dynamic platform for educating and inspiring citizen architects to analyze problems and create design solutions that both respond to the challenges of our time and embrace the promise of a better built environment. For more than 100 years, USC Architecture faculty and graduates have pushed beyond the traditional boundaries of the field to pioneer many paradigm shifting new practices of architecture. Deeply rooted in the City of Los Angeles and also intensely connected to global concerns, USC architects and scholars work shoulder to shoulder with our surrounding communities to develop, empower, and leverage local insight that enables them to become intelligent and intrepid practitioners and forge creative solutions.

The school’s legacy is defined by the value its faculty and graduates contribute to the future of the profession—and to our world. We synthesize learnings from research, the classroom, and the field to create a holistic and informed view on the discipline. We believe that great architecture, landscapes, and cities find their most powerful expression through their impact on the persons who inhabit them and experience them, now and into the future.

ABOUT USC ARCHITECTURE

69 USC ARCHITECTURE

ABOUT USC ARCHITECTURAL GUILD

Founded in 1958, the USC Architectural Guild provides guidance and insight into real-world experiences for students beyond the classroom. The Guild encourages its alumni and non-alumni members and peers—leaders in architecture, design, construction, engineering, finance, and real estate development—to give back and lead the way in career development and mentorship, scholarship and global fellowship support, and technology and material resources. Through knowledge, networking, and real-world experience, the Architectural Guild enriches and amplifies the USC education, inspiring architectural students to find purpose, meaning, and fulfillment in their pursuits.

Annually, the Guild raises significant funds for student scholarship aid and global studies and provides professional development through activities such as the mentorship program, the Design Charrette, and Career Week. The latter offers professional development workshops and culminates in a Firm Fair, where students network and explore opportunities for internships and jobs with top local and national firms.
