WELCOME

TO THE RESIDENTS OF

WEST RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE

WELCOME! We are incredibly excited to welcome you onto campus as an official member of the Trojan Family! Living in a Residential College is a unique experience where students get to meet people from all across the United States and the world. Together, they learn to live, interact, and socialize together and create memories that soon prove that this is more than just a place to sleep—it is their new home for the year. Welcome to USC Residential Education! We hope you are looking forward to your transition and excited about meeting and living among 650 of your peers. We know you’ll love the vibrant, prideful and scholarly living-learning community Fluor and Webb Tower residents have fostered over the years. Through offering you diverse programming opportunities and faculty and staff support, we’re confident that you’ll feel at home in no time! RESIDENTIAL CURRICULUM A residential curriculum is a particular approach to designing and delivering intentional learning opportunities for college and university students. USC Residential Education, guided by our Educational Priority, has set out to focus on the following Learning Goals throughout the upcoming academic year. Educational Priority: As a result of living on campus at USC, students will meaningfully contribute to global communities.

LEARNING GOALS

SELF-AWARENESS Self-awareness is an integral component of the residential experience at USC. We believe that our students should have an understanding of their personal identities and values. By developing a sense of self, students can then practice effective communication skills. We seek to prepare students with transferable life skills that demonstrate practical competence. WELL-BEING Informed by Be Well SC’s definition of well-being, Residential Education is committed to being proactive in providing students with strategies to foster self-care. We strive to help students practice learning from failure and overcome challenges they encounter within their residential communities. In thriving communities, residents care for others and share resources, making it important to create a commitment to healthy relationships. Through strategies that students learn, they will be able to contribute to the well-being of their residential communities.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Living in residential housing provides students the opportunity to connect with others and foster a sense of belonging and purpose. By being part of this community, residents are challenged to manage conflict and skillfully engage in discourse with their peers. As an ambassador of the Trojan Family, residents are challenged to practice social responsibility, demonstrate an accountability to self and others, and develop as engaged citizens. EQUITY & INCLUSION As a commitment to creating an inclusive residential community that values the diversity of all its members, Residential Education seeks to encourage an appreciation for learning about one’s social group identity affiliation. By collaborating with campus partners, we will support, educate, and challenge individual understanding of social justice, equity, and inclusion in order to communicate across difference. We will empower all residents to participate in discourse and learn about systems of privilege and oppression. To that end, residents will be equipped with the tools to move beyond tolerance and commit to creating and maintaining equitable and inclusive communities for all.
