February 2013

Welcome to our first College of Nursing e-newsletter, the Gamecock CONnection. When I came to the campus to interview for the Dean’s position in 2012, I heard incredible stories about the College’s people, products, and passion that I was previously unaware. Indeed, these stories needed to be shared not only within the College’s and University’s corridors, but to our alumni groups and partners. Hence, we are launching this monthly newsletter to share the CON news and “happenings” with all of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners. Our College of Nursing has the largest student body among nursing schools in the state, is nationally recognized, and is getting even better. In 2012, we achieved 96% NCLEX pass rates and 100% nurse practitioner certification exam pass rates. We established the first nurse-managed medical home in the state, and designated and further actualized two College of Nursing “Research Centers”: the Cancer Survivorship Center and the Healthcare Process Redesign Center. These accomplishments enhance our existing resources, such as the Center for Nursing Leadership, Children and Family Health Care Center, and our state-of-the-art Simulation Laboratory. Yes, the University of South Carolina’s College of Nursing is on a mission to transform and positively impact the health care of the citizens of South Carolina and beyond. I am thrilled to be a part of this team and to join this momentous journey. Two of my major priorities over the next year will be to facilitate additional growth in our research agendas and to expand the PhD program. This month I launched several new fellowship and scholarship opportunities for new PhD students. Click here to read more about this. Our College will add full-time faculty positions, including an Endowed Professor, additional tenure-track research faculty, and DNP clinical faculty. Additional faculty are needed to meet the demands from our growing student population, as well as to generate meaningful and scholarly contributions to improve health care delivery and patient outcomes. In the months ahead, I will further articulate these and other priorities as the College continues to position itself as a nationally prominent leader that is making a difference in our local/regional communities. I am honored to return to my alumnus school and to serve as the seventh Dean of the College of Nursing. I invite you to join me in both sharing and shaping the College’s contributions and impact. I hope you enjoy our first newsletter and stay tuned……… there are more great stories to come. Jeannette O. Andrews PhD, RN, FNP, FAAN Dean & Professor j.andrews@sc.edu
