REIMAGINE, EXECUTE, TRANSFORM When our faculty and staff undertook the process of restructuring our mission, vision and strategic plan in May 2013, we anticipated a bold and exciting journey ahead. Interestingly, this process facilitated a “reimagination” of how a Flagship College of Nursing could best “shape health and healthcare delivery ……to facilitate optimal health outcomes for individuals, families, and communities” in South Carolina and beyond (i.e., our mission).

Our innovative and bold “reimagination” has led to precise and intentional execution of many important initiatives. Our quality of education and student learning opportunities continue to excel with #1 US News & World Report ranking in THE NATION, high NCLEX and NP Certification pass rates, preferred employability of our graduates across the country, and so much more. We are key players in addressing access to health care for marginalized communities, especially in primary and mental health care. Our research has flourished, and has moved into the top #29 of NIH ranking among all US Colleges of Nursing. Our research and new discoveries in cancer survivorship, health promotion/risk reduction, palliative care and emergency preparedness are directly impacting patient and family outcomes. Our service and community engagement initiatives lend thousands of hours of direct service to multiple regions in South Carolina. Our leadership with statewide nursing workforce analyses and the action coalition continue to influence regional, and statewide policy and legislation. Our global initiatives have expanded and now touch every continent around the globe. And these are just the tip of the iceberg.

The College’s partnerships have been critical with our execution and the resulting transformation that is occurring. By “reimagining” our own vision, our clinical partners have responded and are revisioning the College’s vital role in key health initiatives around the state. Secondly, the commitment of our team has facilitated a precise execution and has been critical for the rapid transformation. When asked how our College of Nursing is different from others, I answer — it is our people — our alumni, faculty, staff, students, volunteers, parents, and donors — whose commitment is unrelenting and steadfast.

Again, I wish to recognize our entire village for the successes we are realizing in the College. Stay tuned, there is much more ahead. Please review the entire newsletter and follow us on our social media to see how you may plug-in and take part in our transformation.

The University of South Carolina College of Nursing has been awarded a new grant of $30,000 from the Jonas Center for Nursing and Veterans Healthcare. Matched by $30,000 of its own monies, it will fund the scholarship of three doctoral nursing students in 2016. As a recipient of the Jonas Center grant, USC College of Nursing is part of a national effort to stem the faculty shortage and prepare the next generation of nurses – critical as a clinical nurse shortage is anticipated just as an aging population requires care.

Rivers connects students, faculty for research and leadership opportunitiess

Students in the College of Nursing now have a new resource to take advantage of that will ensure they get the most out of the undergraduate experience. Joynelle Rivers, EdD, MSN, RNC, was named director of undergraduate scholar engagement and research this year, and has been tasked with helping students achieve their research and leadership goals.

Welcome to the CON

Sue Heiney has devoted her life to helping families that have been stricken with cancer to cope. She began her career as a clinician, witnessing firsthand the ravaging effects of a disease that was considered a death sentence at the time. She took particular notice of the children of cancer patients and the effect the process was having on them. Inspired by this, she applied for and received funding throughout the years to study the anxiety and psychosocial needs of these children. Eventually, this led her to develop CLIMB, Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery, a support program for children whose parents have cancer. Originally offered in the U.S. and attended by Japanese nurses, social workers, and child life specialists, Dr. Heiney was then invited to Japan by Hope Tree, a volunteer organization founded to support children of cancer patients. She conducted workshops there to teach pediatricians, oncologists, nurses, social workers, and child life specialists how to implement CLIMB. Heiney later developed the Butterfly Program, specifically for Japanese oncology professionals, to teach them strategies for explaining impending death to children of parents in hospice and palliative care.
