Remembering Our Friend

Dean Jeannette Andrews

On Sunday, March 1, 2015, the College of Nursing lost a member of our family--Mary Androne. Mary had been at the University since 1986 and in the College of Nursing for the past eight years. She was our Business Manager, but in reality, managed more than the financial business of the College. She was our nurturer, confidante, caregiver, and our friend. Mary had an infectious laugh that lit up a room, and a caring heart inclusive of everyone. She provided dĂŠcor for our offices, food for our souls, and a spirit that kept us uplifted. Mary will be missed by all of us in the weeks, months and years ahead, yet her memories and legacy will remain.

Students Corner Student Spotlight: Elizabeth Eggebrecht What brought you to the College of Nursing and what do you want to do with your degree?

I was drawn to the College of Nursing to pursue a career as a nurse with the intention of providing care to those in need.

I have always been fascinated by the human body, a degree in nursing was the best way to learn more about such a dynamic subject and serve others. I plan to utilize my nursing degree to care for inpatient psychiatric patients in crisis and arm them with the necessary coping skills to assimilate back into society.

Tell us about your summer externship at SCDMH. This past summer I was fortunate enough to be chosen as a Student Nurse Extern at the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, I worked with chronic involuntarily-committed women. I provided nursing care to patients and performed technical nursing skills, procedures and competencies under the supervision of a Charge Nurse Preceptor. I was also selected to continue my experience at SCDMH as a Therapeutic Intern. Currently, I conduct daily therapeutic interaction with patients by communicating effectively with patients by leading groups to reinforce patient teaching. Every shift I strive to connect and work with patients to let their voice be heard, no matter how small the issue. Allowing patients greater autonomy in decision making leads to patients taking greater responsibility and pride in their actions. Thus leading to independence, which is necessary for the transition from inpatient care to group homes.

DNP Student, Dee Minor, will receive the 2015 Palmetto Gold Award.

What is one quality you believe every nurse should possess?

I believe that every nurse must be nonjudgmental. As a nurse the most therapeutic tool you have is yourself. In order for a person to heal and improve you must address and nurture the whole person.

It is important to see each patient as a person and not to let their illness define them.

Tell us about your extracurricular activities and/or hobbies.

I enjoy spending my free time, which I rarely have, in the kitchen.

I do my best to bake from scratch weekly, my specialties are cheesecakes and chocolate mousse.

What are your plans after graduation?

I hope to participate in the College of Nursing’s newly opened Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Master’s program. I am passionate about expanding the availability of psychiatric care within the state of South Carolina. I plan to reach out and educate the public to combat the stigma surrounding mental illness, to advocate for acceptance and support as patients work to rebuild.

My hope is to work towards standardizing the quality of care for psychiatric patients and assure that patient dignity and rights are maintained. This patient population in particular needs an advocate and I hope to work as a voice for these patients.

Where do you work now?

I am at the USC CON as the Dunn-Shealy Professor of Nursing and the Co-Director of the Cancer Survivorship Center.

What is the most interesting thing you have seen or done as a nurse?

After 30 years, I still find oncology nursing the most interesting thing I have done. Each patient is unique and unforgettable in his or her on way. But, as an oncology nurse, I have had many wonderful experiences, lunch in the White House, worked on a movie set for Queen, traveled to many foreign countries.

What are you hobbies, interests, passions?

Hiking, English shepherds, Outsider art, Upcountry SC especially crafts (split oak baskets) Tell us about your family.

My husband is graduate of College of Pharmacy, now retired from Bryan Psychiatric Hospital, both my daughters are USC graduates (Elizabeth - Psychology, Amanda - Fine Arts).

Elizabeth is a psychologist and manager of Providence House for Children. Amanda is the owner of DiPietro Portraits and mom to my grandsons, the light of my life.

What does it mean to be a College of Nursing Alumnus?

Were there any faculty and/or campus experiences that helped you with your career choices and where you are now?

I am proud to be an alumna of such a highly respected College of Nursing. I had two fantastic mentors, Dr. Carol Collison (now deceased from breast cancer) and Dr. Sally Weinrich, who still consults with me. They were the most influential USC nursing faculty in my career.
