Congratulations to the Class of 2013 Last week, we had 250 nurses graduate from the University of South Carolina with either a Baccalaureate, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in Nursing. These new alumni will join approximately 8000 other USC College of Nursing alumni who are scattered around the world. While some of our most recent Dean Andrews and Frances Ashe-Goins (BSN ‘75, MPH ‘80), Deputy Director, Health Science Administrator U.S. DHHS Office on Women’s Health
graduates will return to their home states of California, New York, Illinois, North Carolina, Florida, and others, the majority will remain in South Carolina to promote health and well-being of our state’s citizens. Congratulations to the class of 2013.

Students’ Corner USC Lancaster based student, Brandon Wilkins, has been selected to participate in the Summer Public Health Scholars Program at Columbia University. The program, funded by the CDC, is designed for undergraduate junior or senior students to increase their interest and knowledge in public health and biomedical science careers. BSN graduating twins, Katie and Tara Grantham are from Charleston, SC. Their mother is a nurse and their older sister is a nurse practitioner.
Carrie Wolf’s proposal “Barriers to International Health and Social Service Provision in the Dominican Republic” has been awarded funding through the Magellan Scholar Program in the amount of $2500. Lauren Yarberough Capstone Scholar Lauren is participating in undergraduate research with the Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) research team at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. The CAUTI research team, which is led by Dr. Elizabeth Mack, MD, focuses on identifying the number of pediatric patients who experience catheter-associated urinary tract infections in an attempt to reduce that number by implementing programs to increase the hospital staff’s awareness of catheter use. The CAUTI research team concentrates on analyzing information about the number of patients contracting an infection, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, and the total number of indwelling urinary catheter days during a specific time. Although CAUTI has always been a focus at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, it is now part of a larger collaborative with Ohio Children’s Hospitals’ Solutions for Patient Safety (OCHSPS). According to OCHSPS, since the fifth largest harm caused across its national network is CAUTI, it formed a team to create strategies consistent with high reliability concepts to significantly reduce harm caused by catheter-associated urinary tract infections. As part of the national children’s hospital network, Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital’s goal is to reduce its CAUTI harm rate for 2013 by 20 percent. To accomplish its goals, the CAUTI team holds informational meetings, conducts learning webinars, provides training tools, and shares the best practice processes with the hospital’s staff. Her participation in the research project includes meeting with CAUTI staff members to plan, discuss, and implement the research activities. She also works to help prepare the materials necessary for the teaching and training activities.
Gamecock Donation Station On April 26th, as a part of OneColumbia CityServe, USC hosted Gamecock Donation Station. Students and student athletes collected new books for Cocky’s Reading Express and nonperishable food items for Harvest Hope food bank at Williams-Brice Stadium parking lot. CON Students took blood pressure for volunteers and participants at the event.

Convocation College of Nursing Convocation was held Thursday, May 9th at the Koger Center for the Arts. Faculty and staff gathered with family of friends to honor the 250 graduates. Speakers included Dean Jeannette Andrews, Katelyn Andrews, Beth-Ann Bowers, Jessica Vinesett, and Lydia Helmick Palmer. Special guests Walt Collins, Dean USC Lancaster, Jean Cavanaugh, President CON Partnership Board, Frances Ashe-Goins, Deputy Director, Health Science Administrator US DHHS Office of Women’s Health, were also in attendance. Dr. Laura Hein, Chairman of the College of Nursing Student Affairs Committee, acknowledged the following awards (presented at the University Awards Ceremony in April): 2013 Outstanding Traditional Undergraduate Student Award recipient – Alesia McFarlin; Academic Excellence Award recipients – Christine Zeitler and Erin McAboy. Dr. Kathy Scharer, who chaired both students committees, presented the graduate award to Laura Szadek (Best DNP Capstone Project) and Pamela Phillips (Best PHD Dissertation). Graduates received their University of South Carolina Nursing pins, Emmanuel Taylor (BSN ‘93) sang the USC Alma Mater, and a slideshow and reception concluded the event. Research Spotlight Swann Arp Adams, Ph.D., MS Swann Adams has been conducting research in SC for over 15 years. Committed to serving her community, Dr. Adams’ research has focused largely on determining why African American women in South Carolina, and the nation as a whole, are less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer and yet more likely to die from their disease than Caucasian women. “I believe that cancer health disparities are a complicated and multifaceted issue affecting all stages of disease progression. I have, therefore, conducted research across the “cancer continuum” including prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and survivorship,” she says. Her specific research projects have focused on how mammography, neighborhood geography, and healthy living impact breast cancer risk and prognosis for African American women. Her innovative work has appeared in prestigious journals including Cancer, Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention, and the American Journal of Epidemiology. Currently, Dr. Adams is Research Core Director on a multimillion dollar South Carolina Cancer Disparities Community Network II Grant funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute. The goals of the program are to understand the underlying causes of cancer-related health disparities; to discover and develop effective innovations to lower cancer incidence, improve survival, and reduce suffering; to deliver these innovations to high-risk populations; and finally, to move them to widespread dissemination. Within this core, Dr. Adams is the PI of the Sistas Inspiring Sistas Through Activity and Support (SISTAS) study. It is an R01-level research study to implement a dietary and physical activity intervention among African American women for breast cancer prevention. The study aims to follow chronic inflammation in the body and hopes to see significant reductions in this cancer-causing risk factor. Dr. Adams also serves as Co-Principal Investigator for the South Carolina Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (SCCPCRN) funded by the Centers for Disease Control. Dr. James Hebert in the Arnold School of Public Health is the Principal Investigator. Dr. Adams leads the local “Data Acquisition and Analysis” arm which aims to partner with federally qualified health centers (FQHC’s) in South Carolina to create a data repository from which academics and health care providers can partner to answer questions related to cancer prevention and control care. “With a total of 10 participating sites, I currently chair the FQHC Data Sub-committee which is working on the analysis of data from FQHC’s at the national level,” she says. “We recently presented work from this national group at the NIH 5th Annual Conference on the Science of Dissemination and Implementation Research.” Dr. Adams’ research focuses on African American individuals because that is where she sees the greatest need in South Carolina, but she believes that the findings and insights gained from the research will benefit all people, regardless of race.

Craig Smith shares his experience as a travel nurse with the USC Times For more than 15 years, Craig Smith cared for the sickest people in each hospital he worked in. And he worked in a lot of hospitals. The critical care nurse, now a clinical professor in the College of Nuring, didn’t hop from job to job. Instead he worked as a traveling nurse, spending weeks at various hospitals and filling in where he was needed. Click here to read more
STAFF SPOTLIGHT Gail Vereen Gail has worked at the College of Nursing for 13 years and at the University for 21 years. She received her 20 year service award on April 15th.
Job Title and duties. What exactly do you do? Student Services Manager in the Office of Student Affairs. I conduct academic advisement and counseling for undergraduate students. I participate in undergraduate recruitment activities. I plan and conduct new student and upper division orientations and supply information for various surveys. Tell us about your most rewarding or satisfying experience or proudest moment at the CON. My most satisfying and proudest moments are hearing from students that have successfully graduated and moved on to thriving careers. It is such a good feeling to hear words of thanks and appreciation from them as they acknowledge the productive and positive experiences that they encountered while enrolled as a BSN student. It’s a good feeling to know that you play a part in that. It’s the same for current students. Knowing that you make a difference – a positive difference – in their Carolina experience, is a great feeling. What is the strangest request you’ve ever had? Believe it or not, the Office of Student Affairs hears many interesting requests. One that comes to mind is the request from a parent to ask if they could sit in classes with their student. What do you do when you’re not working? I enjoy spending time with my husband and sons. Tell us something people may not know about you. I participated in my first 10K walk at the Cooper River Bridge Run/Walk on April 6, 2013 in Charleston, SC.

Dr. Julia Ball has been selected as a featured scholar for May 2013. CON Professor participates in mass casualty drill On April 16th and 17th, CON Faculty member Joan Culley participated in a state-wide mass casualty drill orchestrated by FEMA. The Columbia response took place at the airport, where she served as one of the drill section leaders. Corporal Vinny Bocchino, Emergency Management from the Division of Law Enforcement and Safety also participated in the drill. The drill was designed to allow for maximum participation from federal, state and local response agencies while providing an opportunity to practice and prepare for the 2013 hurricane season and exercise specialized training under the Incident Command System. Their focused objectives included patient reception, triage and tracking, command and control target capabilities, communications and security.

What is up in Practice & Politics? NP Lobby Day a SUCCESS Over 60 Nurse Practitioners from around the state were honored at the State House on April 18 for their service and contributions to healthcare in SC. Nurse Practitioners lobbied State Senators and House Members on House Bill 3372, which has now passed the House and moved to the Senate for consideration and vote. House Bill 3372 would authorize NPs to sign the forms for patients to apply for a Handicapped Placard.

Meet Diane Scott
The College of Nursing held its’ annual Recognition Luncheon (formerly The Scholar/Donor Luncheon) on April 15th at the Frank McGuire Club at the Colonial Life Arena. Scholarship donors and recipients were able to meet and share experiences over lunch and a brief program. The luncheon highlighted the Clinical Simulation Lab at the College of Nursing with the theme “As Gamecocks, our Innovation has No Limits.” Program speakers included Dean Jeannette Andrews, Dr. Michael Amiridis, Mrs. Patricia Moore-Pastides, Amanda Langford, Jessica Grimes, and Brandy Dickson. Mrs. Jean Blount received the Ruth and Rallie Seigler Spirit of Giving Award, the Bobbi Rossi Family received the Legacy of Caring Award, and the South Carolina Nurses Foundation received the Excellence in Corporate Philanthropy Award.
Diane grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and has been in Columbia since 1982. She was a stay at home mom for many years and home schooled for ten years. She will celebrate 45 years of marriage to her husband, Dave, in June and is the mother of three children and five grandchildren. Her oldest daughter lives in Azerbaijan with her husband and three children. Diane and her husband had the opportunity to visit there in 2009 and hope to travel there again. Diane grew up wanting to be a nurse but didn’t pursue it so is excited to have a connection now. She has been at USC since August 2006, and is the administrative assistant to Monica Cromer, the Director of Development. Diane’s duties include communicating with alumni, the College of Nursing Partnership Board and event planning. In her leisure time, she enjoys walking, reading, and going to yard sales with her 5 year old grandson.

The Power of Caring Back in 2000 when Dr. Marilyn Chassie, Associate Dean of the College of Nursing was considering retirement, little did she know how much life could change in a few short years. She met and married a wonderful man named Charles “Chuck” Sonnenberg, a widower who had spent his professional career in financial and information services. Both were lifetime Lutherans and were employed by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina struck, changing their lives forever. Marilyn says, “it was as if my whole lifetime led up to Katrina, being in the right place, at the right time, with the right resources. I loved the excitement, the challenges, the stories, and the difference volunteers could make.” Her role: coordinating community volunteers responding to the disaster from across the country. Drawing upon her history with the University of South Carolina, she helped USC psychology and nursing students come and care for survivors of the disaster. With the merger of their families and their lives, Chuck and Marilyn have embarked on many new adventures---building a home in Newfoundland, welcoming new grandchildren, settling into the Charleston and finding their place in community service. Always an activist for positive change and making a difference, from starting the Amy V. Cockcroft Executive Leadership program, to development of nursing care models that demonstrated effectiveness of nurses practicing in expanded roles, Marilyn was looking for new challenges and Chuck was right there with her supporting and encouraging her endeavors. This exploration led Marilyn, honored as a faculty emeritus, back to her deep roots at USC and the College of Nursing. (This lady has a collection of Gamecock Pins that would rival many.) “Although I am not an alumna of the college,” she says, “it was at USC that I spent most of my nursing career, and here that I learned so much about generosity and giving to others. I believe in the future of the state’s flagship university and flagship College of Nursing.” In reconnecting, Marilyn found the College of Nursing Partnership Board the perfect place for her enthusiasm and energy. The Sonnenberg’s skills, interests, and commitment to the future of the College of Nursing led to their appointment as the USC College of Nursing’s representatives to the President’s Capital Campaign Committee. The College of Nursing Partnership Board leadership and Dean Andrews are delighted to be the beneficiary of their gifts and talents. Recently Marilyn and Chuck have completed their circle of caring and given a planned gift to benefit the College of Nursing through estate Planning. “I learned first about planned giving when I was here at USC during our first major capital campaign. It just seemed logical, especially when I was making a regular annual gift. My annual gift could become much more, by using the same funds to pay the insurance premium on a policy given to the University.” Marilyn gave a gift of life insurance by making the University the owner and beneficiary of a new policy. Because life insurance costs “pennies per dollar,” Marilyn was able to make an extraordinary gift at modest cost. This year, Chuck took advantage of a renewed provision in the tax law that allows donors age 70 ½ to transfer up to $100,000 from their IRA to charity. That transfer counts toward Chuck’s minimum required distribution. The money from his IRA will sustain Marilyn’s life insurance policy for several years, freeing them of the tax-deductible premium obligation to fund current needs at the College of Nursing. This wonderful couple truly demonstrates the power of caring through the gift of their time, talents and resources. Thank you, Dr. Marilyn Chassie Sonnenberg and Mr. Charles “Chuck” Sonnenberg, for serving as great role models for us all.

Center for Nursing Leadership Hosts Nurse Messenger Training The SC One Voice One Plan (OVOP) Action Coalition (AC) Executive Steering Committee and Action Team leaders crafted a highly specific strategic plan utilizing the 2010 IOM Future of Nursing Report as the template, and modifying it to support the needs of South Carolina’s nursing education and healthcare delivery system needs. To assist our team leaders as they prepare to convene their groups and move from planning into action, the Center for Nursing Leadership hosted a nationally recognized team of media-training experts to help them learn how to frame important message. Diana Mason, PhD, RN, FAAN and Barbara Glickstein, RN, MPH, MS – consultants and co-directors from Center for Health, Media & Policy for a Nurse Messenger Training – have many years of media training and over 25 years of broadcast experience. Participants included Stephanie Burgess from USC, Christy Cimineri from Horry Georgetown Technical College, Nancy Duffy from MUSC, Carly Eklund from USC’s DNP program (and a Jonas Leadership Scholar), Vicki Green from the SC Nurses Association, Elizabeth White-Hurst and Peggy Hewlett from the SC Center for Nursing Leadership, and Susan Outen from the SC Hospital Association. The all-day session provided colleagues with the necessary tools, skills, and confidence to participate in the media’s coverage of health issues, and reach the public with key messages. Attendees were given the opportunity to host a mock press conference, participate in an on-camera interview, and practice visually outlining an article for publication by a media source. In addition, they were informed on the potential role of social media in spreading the message of the IOM report. Participants left the Nurse Messenger training feeling excited and better-equipped to communicate to the public about the IOM report’s key messages of scope of practice, higher education levels for all nurses, more nurses in leadership positions and the importance of collecting up-to-date data on nursing issues. Special thanks go to the Center to Champion Nursing in America at AARP for funding the visit of this highly respected team of colleagues who shared their time and talents with our SC nurse leaders. As a result, one participant said, “We are ready to go!”
