May – A Month of Celebration and New Beginnings

May is one of the busiest months in the College of Nursing. Final examinations, course completions and closeouts, research proposal submissions, clinic visits, Nurses Week celebrations, and of course -- graduation. This May, we will launch 230 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral prepared nurses into the workforce in South Carolina and beyond. Our graduates have demonstrated basic competencies and knowledge expected of a novice nurse, nurse practitioner, and/or nurse scientist. However we recognize that their journey as a life-long learner, a thought leader, an advocate, and a pioneer in this era of health reform is just beginning. Their character, integrity, ethics, honor, and passion will be a shining light on the incredible journey ahead. Our Gamecock Nursing “Village” expects great things from all of our students and alumni and, together, will support each other in every possible way. My challenge to our graduates: Go forth, set audacious goals, and then make them happen -- for yourself, your patients and populations you serve, and your noble profession of nursing. We hope to see all of our alumni at the 50th Annual Viana McCown Alumni Event on October 17, 2014 .
