Seventy years ago in the fall of 1944, Viana McCown was appointed the acting director of the newly established Department of Nursing at the University of South Carolina. During this time, a nursing student received two years of general education in conjunction with a three-year diploma program. Students worked 12 hour shifts (sound familiar?) and trained at Columbia Hospital (which later evolved as Richland Memorial Hospital in 1972). Ms. McCown served as the director of USC’s program until 1957, during which time the Department of Nursing became the School of Nursing and initiated the 4-year BSN program. Fifty years ago, in 1964, Ms. McCown endowed an annual lectureship, to allow students, alumni, and faculty, and the community to hear outstanding speakers deliver the annual Viana McCown Lecture. On October 17, 2014 at the 50th annual Viana McCown Lectureship, we will honor and celebrate our history and envision our future. The planning committee, led by Ruth Seigler, has been working for months to host an exciting day for all to enjoy. Leading our day will be a keynote presentation by a South Carolina “adoptee”, Dr. Phyllis Kritek, who is an internationally renowned nurse scholar, writer, educator, and leader. Her humor and insight will engage and stimulate all. Following, several alumni groups will lead us through the past seven decades of the history of the College of Nursing, sharing stories, fond memories, and the impact of the College of Nursing on our state and beyond. During lunch, our junior and senior nursing students will provide a fashion show of nursing “attire” through the decades, while being internally thankful they do not have to wear caps to clinical every day in this era. The afternoon will be highlighted with a panel of the five “living deans”, including Drs. Betty Johnson, Connie Baker, Mary Ann Parsons, and Peggy Hewlett. I am so very excited to connect with the prestigious leaders of the College who have laid the path for me as the seventh dean of the USC College of Nursing. Later in the afternoon, we will congregate in the College to see the newly renovated student area and socialize with our nursing colleagues and friends who are coming back to Columbia from all over the country. Several classes are hosting reunions for the event and entire homecoming weekend. We salute you, Viana McCown, our founding Director. Your vision, leadership, and commitment to USC will carry forth. We will honor this very special 50th anniversary in a way that will make you proud. I look forward to seeing all of our College of Nursing friends and alumni at this very special event. Jeannette O. Students Corner SNA helps raise money for Sir Big Spur’s New Ride
Sir Big Spur’s new ride - The Roost Roller 2 - was launched at the USC-GA game September 13th. The CON Student Nurses Association raised some of the funds that helped to build the ride. Sir Big Spur’s owner, Mary Snelling, is a CON alumna. Thank you to everyone involved! Go Gamecocks! Read More Here.
Student Q&A: Michael Pallon, Class of 2016
What brought you to the CON and what do you want to do with your degree? I wanted to go to school away from home, but also attend a school that is well-known for producing quality graduates. After graduation I plan to pursue a career in emergency medicine and would eventually like to take on the role of a nursing administrator within a large hospital system. What is one skill you believe every nurse should possess? The ability to advocate. I firmly believe that it is the duty of the nurse to treat patients no differently than they would treat their own family. What is/was your favorite class? My favorite class so far has been Pathology with Dr. Smith; for me this class provided an opportunity to apply everything that we spent time learning in lower division.
Alpha Xi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau held it’s induc-
tion at the College of Nursing on September 28th. Ninety-five students were inducted into nursing’s International Honor Society.

What is your proudest accomplishment? Representing my class at the Commitment to Caring Ceremony on September 26, 2014. I was very excited to be speaking on behalf of the entire Junior class. Tell us about your extracurricular activities. I am a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council, undergraduate member of the Partnership Board, member of SNA, and president of South Carolina Rooster Nurses. I am involved with Relay For Life and Be the Match on Campus. My hobbies include kayaking, sailing, camping, hiking, and playing golf. What advice would you give to future nursing students? Always to get to know your professors. It’s a great way to stand out as a student, but it’s also a really good way to build connections.
Shelby Jones, a 19 year old sophomore
nursing student, passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2014 from complications of lupus. According to her mother, Tonya Jones, Shelby always had a dream of attending the University of South Carolina and becoming a nurse. She was an outstanding student with a caring spirit and love for life. She enjoyed sports, especially USC football games, and had a long history of volunteering to help others, including being a “candy striper” at MUSC and volunteer for the United Way. On behalf of the College of Nursing community, we extend our sincerest condolences to the Jones family. College of Nursing Simulation Lab featured in the Daily Gamecock: New machines

Commitment To Caring Ceremony
This special ceremony, held at the CON on September 26th, honors the Junior class as they prepare to enter healthcare centers for their first off-campus clinical rotation. Featured speakers included Savannah Turner, Elyssa Easterling, Michael Pallon, Deb McQuilken, Dr. Kathleen Lasala, Carol Truslow, and Dean Andrews. Students recited the Code of Ethics for Nurses and the Nightingale Pledge. A reception and tours of the Clincal Simlation Lab followed for their students and friends/family.
This summer, CON student, David Wolfer, lived with a Ugandan family and worked for six weeks at Mulago Hospital, the National Referral Hospital in Kampala, Uganda. While at Mulago, he worked as a nurse in the Infectious Disease, Emergency Triage and Pediatric Units. Uganda is a country with incredibly easy access to healthcare but with very poor conditions with a 50:1 patient to nurse ratio. David says, “My experiences were shocking. One night shift from 6pm-6am, five patients died; one because his oxygen tank ran out. But within all of this sickness and death, I was amazed by the resiliency of the patients and the care provided by several of the doctors.” His primary personal take away was his need to pursue further education and certification to better address the healthcare issues that the people of Uganda face. He is now more than ever thankful for the US healthcare system and excited to go back to Uganda after he graduates to study at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda for a year taking graduate nursing and public health classes as a part of the Rotary Global Grant. David will be speaking at the USC SNA meeting on October 16th at 7pm in NURS 231. He will share more about his Ugandan experiences and funding options available to USC students.

Fall Semester Wellness Activities Submitted by the wellness Task Force: Sue Heiney, Erin McKinney, Kathy Mercer, Robin Traufler, De Onna Greenwood, and Sydney Elmore (student representative) The College of Nursing is continuing to focus on wellness this academic year. The Wellness Task Force planned and presented three Wellness Breaks for faculty and staff at the Back-to-School in-service, including deskercise, Tai Chi, and a nutrition challenge. A Wellness Interest Survey was sent to faculty and staff and this information was used to plan two Healthy Covered Dish Luncheons. The first one was held on September 8, prior to the Dean’s Dialogue. We had good participation and collected lots of delicious, healthy recipes we will be sharing. The second luncheon is scheduled for November 14, the day prior to the Florida game, and will challenge faculty and staff to modify their favorite tailgating recipe and wear their garnet and black. The Wellness Task Force is also leading Weekly Lunchtime Walks at noon on Fridays this semester, using Campus Wellness Fitwalk Paths. Later this semester, Fun Food Days will be offered for everyone (including students) and a stress management activity for finals week is being planned.
Dr. Amber Williams, Director of Nursing Outreach and Karen Worthy, MSN MPH,
RN were selected for a podium presentation of their work, Effective leadership for BSN recruitment in rural communities, at Sigma Theta Tau’s leadership connection in Indianapolis on September 25th. Dr. Robin Matutina presented a poster of her
work, Educational interventions for middle school students to improve the perception of nursing as a future career choice.
Research Spotlight: Katherine K. Chappell, MSN, APRN, PNP-BC
As a Clinical Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing, Kate Chappell, has seen her share of parenting protectiveness behaviors and risk factors regarding child abuse. A USC nursing Ph.D. candidate, Professor Chappell has also served as a pediatric nurse practitioner at two of the college’s faculty practice plan sites, the Child Advocacy Center of Aiken and the Dickerson Child Advocacy Center. In this role, Professor Chappell has conducted numerous forensic medical exams for children involved in child abuse allegations. Her work in this area led her to partner with both practice sites and senior BSN student, Senna Desjardins, to conduct the Caregiver ACE study. The Caregiver ACE study examines relationships between past adverse childhood experiences of caregivers and current child abuse or neglect allegations involving the children in their family. Caregivers of children who come to the clinics complete a demographic form and a well-validated, 10-question Yes/No tool, the Adverse Childhood Experiences Survey (ACE Survey). Desjardins submitted a proposal for USC’s Magellan Scholar undergraduate funding to facilitate participation in research with faculty mentors and, once funded, helped organize materials and processes with the recruitment sites for the study. The study team, which includes Dr. Abbas Tavakoli as data manager, is currently collecting data which should be completed by January 2015. The team plans to complete data analysis and prepare for dissemination in the spring. One presentation abstract has already been accepted at the statewide Sara Schuh Child Abuse Conference which is slated for April 2015. The possible impact of this study is a better understanding of how parents’ and other caregivers’ experiences may relate to a family’s current risk for maltreatment. This is valuable information for building understanding toward more effective prevention and intervention planning with the goal of reducing and addressing child abuse.
