TOWNSHIP OF UPPER ST. CLAIR RECREATION & LEISURE SERVICES

Message from the Recreation and Leisure Services Team Our Vision Enhance the quality of life by providing the best possible public recreational facilities, open natural spaces and programs for our citizens and surrounding communities. Greetings! The goal of the Township of Upper St. Clair’s Department of Recreation is to offer the residents of Upper St. Clair and surrounding community residents worthwhile activities that will enhance their quality of life. Regardless of age or fitness level, we provide an abundance of program offerings along with top notch facilities. At the Boyce Mayview Community & Recreation Center, we often hear from our members, “I can join any facility but I feel like I belong at the C&RC”. This is where you belong. A multitude of opportunities for all residents and surrounding communities to enjoy are provided in this 2013 Fall/2014 Winter Recreational Brochure. You do not have to be a member or a resident to participate. Whether your interest is recreation, fitness, swimming, arts, sports or special events we have something for everyone. Speaking of special events, don’t forget we have the Bounty at Boyce Mayview Park (November 9th) and Holidays at the C&RC (December 7th). These are truly special events that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Last year, we had participants from more than 20 different zip codes, so be sure to bring your friends and family! Please read the brochure, keep it handy, and if you have not already done so, come join the large number of residents and surrounding community residents who have participated in the past. Enjoy, as the benefits are endless! Sincerely, Paul Besterman Director of Recreation and Leisure Services Township of Upper St. Clair

MLK Day of Service: Grades 1-6_________

In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, addresses social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.” Do you have a favorite project you’d like us to work on? Contact Amy Kerman, Community Programs Department, at 412.221.1099, ext. 603 or at Kerman@twpusc.org. We will spend part of the “day on” doing various Community Service Projects that benefit our greater community. (Yes, the time spent working can count toward required Community Service hours needed at various schools.) Then we’ll take a little bit of the “day off” to enjoy some treats and play together in the C&RC. Please pack a lunch. Days/Dates: Monday, January 20, 2014 Time: 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Age Requirement: Grade 1 through Grade 6 Students in Grade 7 and older may register to be a group leader or assistant. Be sure to DRINK YOUR WATER before, during and after exercise. Older adults are at greater risk of becoming dehydrated because of the following factors: • Decrease in sensation of thirst. • Medications such as diuretics, laxatives or even sedatives can cause the loss of fluids. • Diseases such as diabetes, draining wounds or even depression which causes decrease in appetite. • Reduction of muscle (which is 80% water) and decrease in physical activity can result in increase of fat (which is almost completely free of water).
