Partners in Mission: Bound Together in Love by Erica Johnson “The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.” (1 Cor. 12:12, 27) To be honest, I doubted that this truth could be lived out amongst a group of such diverse individuals. We came from different backgrounds, were all different ages, lived in different cities, and were heading to a place where only one of us had traveled before. In August, the Western Division sent a group of 13 people to work alongside the officers and soldiers of Moldova, a Partner in Mission country of the Central Territory. Of course, my doubts were proven wrong as I witnessed God’s love dissipate language barriers and truly unite the global body of Christ.

The Salvation Army (or Armata Salvarii in Romanian) is a relatively young presence in Moldova, but certainly thriving and impacting the lives of hundreds of people. This is evident in the joyful soldiers and officers who are dedicated to their work and full of love for God’s children. Our team was witness to feeding programs, mobile medical clinics, day camps, services for displaced families, and vibrant church services. We also were able to help with minor remodeling projects in the Divisional Headquarters building and a corps in the
capital city, Chisinau. We traveled to several areas surrounding Chisinau and were warmly welcomed as brothers and sisters in Christ everywhere we went. I became a witness to the fact that as one body of Christ, we are able to accomplish much for the kingdom. Our fellow comrades in Moldova are examples of unity (it is no wonder that Moldavians are known for their hospitality). Our language differences and the distance between us aside, let us imitate their example and strive to live as one body bound together in love.

Share Your Christmas Joy / Micah Challenge - Page 2
Will you Share your Christmas Joy? Share Your Christmas Joy is a unique opportunity to give a little extra and a little early to those in need overseas for the Christmas celebration. Last year donors helped exceed the goal of $11,100.00 to send $100.00 to over 110 children’s homes overseas to help them celebrate Christmas by raising $12,336.51!!! This year the NEW goal is to raise $12,000.00 to send $100.00 to over 120 locations. Giving further during this time of year will allow the administrators and staff of the homes and schools a chance to give to the children in a way the children have never received. The following statement is from the Zambia Territory – a report on celebrating Christmas with the Share Your Christmas Joy donations, “During Christmas celebrations,
every pupil received a present as a way of showing love and care from the Share Your Christmas Joy donors. It used to look Children in Zambia receive selective Christmas gifts made possible to them by Share Your Christmas Joy because donations they did not understand what was happening when other pupils would receive pre-
sents in previous years from their sponsors and they did not. All pupils received personal presents during the Christmas celebration as a result of Share Your Christmas Joy.” Recipients may enjoy their first Christmas gift, first Christmas meal, and the joy the holiday season can bring to a young child. And for you, there is the joy of giving. Please consider Sharing Your Christmas Joy this year by sending donations in before October 31, 2010. Send check donations to: The Salvation Army, Sponsorship Office 10 W. Algonquin Rd., Des Plaines, IL 60016. You may also visit our website www.makeapayment.centralmissions.org

Micah Challenge: 10.10.10 Day of Prayer In our world there are 1.2 billion people who live on less than US$1.25 a day. These people live in extreme poverty. In 2000, world leaders agreed that this could be reduced by 50% within 15 years, if eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were met. All 189 United Nations state governments adopted these goals, giving a unique window of opportunity to change our world! Micah Challenge is a global coalition of Christians holding governments to account for their promise to halve extreme poverty by 2015. They invite us, as church members and fellow Believers, to join with them and 100 million Christians around the world in the 2010 Lend A Hand campaign. Lend a Hand is a chance for us to join with the
global church by promising to live justly, pray passionately, and advocate for the poor in this crucial time. As part of this campaign, on 10.10.10 (October 10th, 2010) churches and individuals around the world will be committing to the following: • Praying: praying faithfully and intentionally for those who live in abject poverty. • Promise: personally promising to live justly, as we are called to in Micah 6:8, and asking our leaders to honor their promises. • Advocating to our leaders, by sending handprints with our names on them, providing a visible message that we care about global poverty and will hold them accountable to maintaining the MDGs, relating to ending poverty. Following 10.10.10, these hand-
prints will be presented to our political leaders urging them to meet the MDGs, and more specifically take bold action on child and maternal health as these goals are furthest behind the 2015 deadline. 10.10.10 is an opportunity to show that wherever we may be in the world, we are all standing together as Christians, recommitting ourselves to the pursuit of justice and encouraging action from our leaders. Will you commit to joining in prayer for those who live in poverty on 10.10.10? For more information visit www.micahchallenge.org. “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” - Micah 6:8

Project 24/29: Pakistan This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.” 1 John 3:16-20. Sometimes it’s not easy putting our love and our words into action. It

Summer Mission Team - Page 4
My Summer Mission Team Experience: Bolivia by Tina Lirovas, 2010 SMT Member to Bolivia Ejército de Salvación (The Salvation Army) is doing a great job and I saw the power of God at work in Bolivia. We were able to work with the Army officers, youth leaders and kids in various activities. What I noticed in them was the joy of the Lord in their faces seen through all they did. I thought that I would have a difficult time in Bolivia since I could neither speak nor understand their language (Spanish) .The kids took me for who I was and they even talked and interacted with me though I could not verbally respond to them. They accepted me for who I am.
Bolivia is ranked one of the poorest nations in South America, but the Bolivians’ hearts are full of riches from God. Regardless of their lack of resources, they use whatever they have to praise and magnify the Lord. This was evident in Aguas Claras, a small outpost in Viacha. This outpost meets in a very small room, but the sweet sound of praise rises from the people who gather there. We also visited a girls’ home in Cochabamba and were moved by the love the girls had for one another and even us. Though we were strangers, they showered us with their love and
lake looks as big as an ocean and its waters are blue and cool. The lake is surrounded by hills and is very beautiful. As we sailed on it, I asked myself “Why can’t some people believe that there is God?” Surely man did not create any of the beautiful rivers, lakes and mountains!

this was evidence of Christ’s love for all. Most of the girls have gone through traumatizing episodes in their very young lives but have managed to overcome it all through Christ, who gives us victory. We were able to attend a youth camp and see how the young people use their time and talents to glorify God. Apart from the people, I saw God in the beautiful scenic views on our way to various ministries and the short visit to Lake Titicaca. This
I went to this wonderful country as a mission team member hoping to bless some souls through Jesus Christ, but I was blessed more than I anticipated. Bolivia was like home to me and I thank the Lord and the Salvation Army for giving me the opportunity to meet this wonderful part of God’s Kingdom. I am looking forward to another chance to be a blessing and to be blessed by God’s people.

Kiss the Pig Missions Fundraiser Shared by Lt. Kristina Sjogren The Family Outreach Committee of the Cedar Rapids, Iowa Corps organized a fun competition that challenged the congregation to get more involved in supporting The Salvation Army’s world missions. The corps took a silent survey to nominate three corps members who they would like to see kiss a pig. For six weeks, three counter kettles labeled with those individuals’ pictures were on display. The congregation voted for the individual they would like to see kiss the pig by depositing money
into the kettle displaying that person’s picture. The kettle containing the most money at the end of the six weeks determined which person would have to kiss the pig! At a family picnic after the Sunday Holi-
ness meeting on September 26, the pig was revealed and since Lt. Michael Sjogren’s kettle had the most money in it, he had to kiss the pig. Through this fun and memorable fundraiser, the corps raised $275.00 for World Services! Are you looking for an original missions fundraising idea? Visit resources.centralmissions.org and click on “Resources” for some unique fundraising ideas. Have you or a group at your corps held a unique or creative fundraiser for missions? If you have an idea to share for possible inclusion in the newsletter, please email your idea to Missions@usc.salvationarmy.org. Please also include a photo from the fundraiser, if available.
Sacrificial Giving in Kenya West Reprinted from a newsletter submitted by Commissioners William & Nancy Roberts Earlier this year, the Kenya West Territory conducted its annual selfdenial ingathering. The donations given in this way are remitted to The Salvation Army’s International Head-
quarters, and used to fund Salvation Army ministry and service around the world, in those countries which require external support. Kenya West is one such territory which receives this kind of funding. In 2008, shortly after the Kenya West Territory was created, Kenya West soldiers contributed 1.9 million shil-
Kenya West soldiers worship God through dance
lings. In 2009, contributions totaling 3.1 million shillings were given in self denial. In April 2010, the selfdenial ingathering reported 5.3 million shillings, a 70% increase over 2009 giving. What is remarkable is that when translated into US dollars, Kenya West Salvationists contributed about $71,000.00 in one year of self-denial giving. Given that many of these soldiers live on 1 dollar a day or less, the amount contributed to support Salvation Army ministry in other parts of the world equals 71,000 days of living for a Kenya Westerner. Remarkable, indeed! And humbling as well. We are proud and honored to be associated with Salvationists like this. Kenya West is both grateful recipient and generous giver.

Overseas Personnel Updates Haiti: Our New Home Submitted by Majors Robert and Rae Doliber With some 40 corps and schools, and over 10,000 soldiers, junior soldiers, or adherents, the Haiti Division is the largest in the Caribbean Territory and one of the strongest in the Western Hemisphere. Though its people were rattled and its buildings destroyed or damaged by the devastating earthquake on January 12, they have resolved, with the help of God and the support of people around the world, to rebuild stronger than ever. We are part of the new Haiti Reconstruction and Development Office, created September 1, 2010, to transition from the initial emergency response to the rebuilding of schools, the clinic, corps, and lives. To joyful singing of “To God be the Glory,” the new team was welcomed at the Port-au-Prince Corps September 19, where we witnessed renewed signs of hope and confidence in God for the future of Haiti. A number of projects are being designed to strengthen the existing mission of the Haiti Division, both inside and outside of Port-au-Prince, through the support of current evangelical and social programs. These include youth and family support, physical and emotional health care, school infrastructure, and other community development projects. We give praise to God for the safe arrival of the new team, the resilience and joyful spirit of the Haitian people in general and the Salvationists in particular, and the tremen-
dous outpouring of financial and prayer support of people around the world. We would ask for prayer for divine wisdom and guidance as we prioritize the new projects, God’s help in adapting to the heat and new culture, and steadfastness in learning Creole. To God be the glory! Returning to the USA: Commissioners William and Nancy Roberts Having served on three different continents over the last nine years, Commissioners William and Nancy Roberts are preparing to return home to the United States. Commissioners Roberts began their overseas service in 2001 when they were appointed as Territorial Leaders in the South America East Territory. In February 2005, the Roberts received a change of appointment and moved to London, England where they served at The Salva-
tion Army’s International Headquarters as the International Secretary for Business Administration and Secretary for IHQ Staff Development. In 2008, Commissioners Roberts again found themselves moving to a new country as they were assigned as the first Territorial Leaders of the newly opened Kenya West Territory. November 1, 2010 will bring about a new assignment for Commissioners Roberts as they return to the USA and assume appointments at The Salvation Army’s National Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. Commissioner William Roberts is appointed as the National Commander and Commissioner Nancy will serve as the National President of Women’s Ministries. Commissioners Roberts have provided remarkable leadership to the Kenya West Territory and are well-loved by the Kenyan people. As Commissioners Roberts wrote in a recent newsletter, “Two and one-half years have gone by all too quickly, but not so quickly to not leave indelible marks on our lives. We have been marked for life, and will never be the same. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time here, and come to love the place and the people. We shall miss them when we finally leave.” Please be in prayer for Commissioners Roberts and the people of the Kenya West Territory during this time of transition.
